P A G E 2 Tourism in Mexico R ecap; In the past issues we have travelled all the way from the San Diego–Tijuana border down to Mulege which is a travel of 1014 kilometers from a total of nearly 1800 to the tip of the Peninsula. Bay of Concepcion Leaving Mulege and continuing going south, you will find some of the most beautiful beaches of the Peninsula, since these beaches are not only in the Sea of Cortes, but also protected by an outside mini-peninsula which makes it a wonderful scenery, the Bay of Concepcion, which harbors beaches such as the Santispac, Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach), El Burro, El Coyote, Buenaventura, El Requeson, etc. All natural beauties which you can enjoy, going into the Ocean specially in the period of May-October which is when the tide rises. There are very few places to stay, the best bet is to stay in Mulege, where there are pretty modest but clean hotels (Mulege, by the way just suffered a real bad fire that destroyed lots of palm trees and few houses and small bushes, because of the drought). There are, nice little restaurants in most of these beaches and you can always find a way to rent a panga for as low as a couple of hundred bucks that would take you fishing for fascinating catch that you can cook there or take with you in your ice chest. When you are done with this, keep south until you get to Loreto, one of the largest communities in the state of Southern Baja, with a major airport, that receives flights from “Alaska Airlines” and “Aerocalafia“ mainly from Los Angeles and Tijuana. In the town where you will find excellent five stars hotels such as the “ Mission Inn “ or the “Mision de las Flores “ or the In this Issue: Going down the Peninsula of Baja California (continues) “Lor e to Inn” where they have all services including a g o o d Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto menu and spa facilities. Also however you can find cabins and small modest hotels and restaurants, which usually have excellent fresh sea food. Loreto also houses the oldest of all Missions, Nuestra Senora de Loreto founded in 1697. Another very interesting mission is that of San Javier up in the mountains, a 45 minute ride from the downtown area. This downtown area is very charming with cobbled stones and pedestrian streets, full of restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, etc. A boat trip from Loreto is a must, to go to the Island of Coronado. The ride is about an hour from the little port, the boat goes around the island so you look lots of wildlife, such as Sea Lions, Eagles, and some species that are endemic to the Region as you know the Sea of Cortes is considered a protected area “Patrimony of Humanity” till you arrive to a wonderful white sand beach where you can swim and snorkel and see many fish, right in the low tides. For some reason, there are no sting rays there. We believe they like to hide in gray type of sand. In Loreto, you will discover lots of activities but you have to be careful in the Ocean as there are a lot of sting rays, right on the beach, as they like the warm waters, so drag your feet to chase them away. Teacher: Why are you late? Student: There was a man who lost a hundred dollar bill. Teacher: That's nice. Were you helping him look for it? Student: No. I was standing on it. P A G E 3
