Thanking Our Volunteers!
Each fall the Collierville Literacy
Council (CLC) Board invites tutors,
students and volunteers for dinner
and a celebration of the good progress made in the past year with
our three programs, ELL, GED and
basic Literacy. For the 4th year,
The Church of the Incarnation provided a beautiful setting, as well as
an invocation and a warm welcome
by Father Parham . A delicious
dinner was prepared and served by
the Incarnation’s Knights of Columbus. The CLC Board coordinated
and conducted the evening’s festivities
during that time. She also coordinated and presided over the
monthly Coffee & Conversation
for our ELL students in 2009-10.
The staff is still indebted to her for
making the beautiful valances that
grace the windows at the council
office!

Held on the beautiful campus of St. George’s Independent School in Collierville, the 2010 CLC Scrabble
FUNdraiser was a tremendous success! Sunday, November 14 found 26 teams of three competing in a series of three matches. ―Scrabble Experts‖ were on hand to lend their expertise...for a price. (This was a fundraiser, after all!)
Door prizes, delicious snacks, a silent auction and great camaraderie added to the excitement of the afternoon of focus and fun. The big winners are, of course, the students of the Collierville Literacy Council, whose
lives are impacted by the services they receive.

December Tutor Support Gathering
The most recent TSG was held at the
Literacy Council December 9th, with a festive
brunch, lots of time for tutors to visit and compare
notes of tutoring and a creative introduction to
teaching PUNCTUATION with a student, led by
Kelly Thieme.
Ann Miller and Barbara Bailey were winners of
the Left/Right Christmas game. All the tutors got
an “A” for knowing their left and right directions!
Sharing the Good ~
We applaud ALL of our tutors and students for their hard work!!
We share some of what we learn from your Monthly Tutor Reports…
Vikki’s student, Alex is thrilled to now be reading to his 5-year-old grandson, who brings books over
for Grandpa to read. If there is a word he does not know, the little guy runs to grandma to ask her.
In the past, Alex would say he was too busy or would distract him with something else. Bruce and
James are enjoying the Literacy Kit tools. Sungeun told her tutor, Tusa, that she took her daughter
to the doctor by herself, and then to the drugstore to fill out a Rx. She was very proud of this accomplishment! Monica also visited her doctor by herself and shared with tutor, Marti, that she was
able to speak and be understood. ―Busy‖ worked with Jessica just a few times, but it was enough to
help her pass her GED math. Jacquie and Wen Yan went to the movies together and saw ―Blind
Side.‖ It was a first for Wen Yan! Mike and Jose practice vocabulary and grammar from the newspaper and road signs they find on the internet. Fran and Fana started emailing so Fana can practice writing her English in grammatically correct sentences. Nancy thinks MiEun is a ―wonderful
student and we are learning from each other every time we meet.‖ We were delighted to hear
MiEun had the courage to apply and will be volunteering at Page Robbins to play the piano. Sonji
and Lydia started using the phonics phones with good success. Linda H. and her class took a few
―field trips‖...to a bank, the post office and Starbucks! Ben and David worked on essay writing and it
sure paid off! David was one of the recent GED graduates. Several of our students are working on
their citizenships with the help of their tutors, among them are Teresa and Nancy, and Debi and
Yaneth. Congrats to Emilia for passing the Citizenship test, and to Donna for her help! Oh, and
Patti taught Kayoko how to play Scrabble. Maybe next year she will play in our tournament!

More Certified Tutors!
In September, 2010, we changed our Tutor Training format. It is still a
Friday night orientation, but Saturday is a shorter training with a focus
on a specific program that the tutor selects to start with. Thus, we
now have GED 101, ELL 101 and Literacy 101 trained tutors, who will
be certified upon completion of two other steps. Much better!
