Red River Valley Honkers PO Box 144, Paris, Texas 75461-0144 October 2015 The Horn Volume 6 Issue 10 Message from the President Well, September started with a successful day selling hot dogs at the remodeled and expanded Atwood’s store. Many of you were on hand doing your best and it looked like having fun doing it. Hot dogs were being consumed as well as all of the additional items you all brought. The cars looked good parked down one of the rows. I hope it went as well for Atwood’s. Our October meeting will have the top three and maybe we can vote for our “new” award just in time for us to vote on a person to receive it. If you have not seen your copy of the AACA magazine it is that time of year again when we vote in new people and pay our dues. Please vote. Eva and I went to the car show in Mena, Arkansas. It was a nice drive and we had fun as well as some good food on our ride back in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. The Travelers held their car show at the fair grounds and it was a nice. Some of what we saw in Mena traveled to Paris for us to see again. The last work night involved a reconstruction of 2 bucket seats for a Mercedes-Benz. Neither Lionel, Hayden nor I had taken them apart, so it was a huge (4 hour) challenge to get them assembled and mounted in the car. October 1st was when the Light It Pink campaign for breast cancer happened at the Civic Center (one car in attendance). Along with all of that the military convoy came through on the southern route established in 1920. Many of us were there to see the vehicles parked at the Civic Center on Friday and off on route on Saturday morning at O dark 30. The MA & PA tour was also held and from what I’ve heard it was GREAT! I hope someone will report more on that. CONGRATULATIONS!! AUGUST DOOR PRIZE WINNER: Pat Stemen Kay Spraggins won the name tag drawing Red River Valley Honkers Page 2 This is what the “Mean Green Machine” looks like, wicked and loud. After an entire tree is processed, you get the best-looking firewood, cut to fit your fireplace and stacked neatly, Not only was it exciting to see, but the machine master, Delma Gibbs, tested us on the different kinds of wood and other things. Shirley Carroll and Jan Weiberg guessed the most kinds of wood, Jerry McFadden predicted the amount of time to cut and stack a full cord of wood and Dan McClessky guessed closest to the number of pieces of wood in a cord. Each won a gift card for a local restaurant. After we trekked back from Red River County, we enjoyed a tasty lunch at the Kountry Kitchen In Blossom. October 2—3, the Military Convoy on the Bankhead Highway tour rolled into Paris and spent the night. It was a spectacular sight to see. Several of the Honkers were out to see them at the Love Civic Center. Red River Valley Honkers Page 4 Annual Ma Pa Tour 2015 Friday, October 2nd we left Paris for Emory to meet the Greenville AACA club for lunch. If you are ever in Emory, the Circle W barbeque on US Hwy 69 received a lot of kudos from our group. Getting back on the highway after lunch was fun, a small “auto social” brought out a firetruck and ambulance, but we got on the road anyway. Saturday, we met for breakfast and decided where we would visit first. The Texas Ranger Museum (not the baseball rangers) proved to be a surprisingly large collection of information about the original Rangers and how they became established. We then visited the suspension bridge over the Brazos. The bridge was originally used to drive cattle and wagon trains over the river, but is being refurbished as a tourist attraction. After lunch there was a choice of the Homestead working farm or a visit to the Mammoth Waco Dig. Both were worth a visit. The closing banquet was held at “The Elite” restaurant, where the food and service was excellent. Everyone was invited to participate in a contest of Family Feud for lots of fun and laughs.
