was originally developed at The University of British
Columbia to serve this purpose. This test is used by The
University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University,

and colleges in British Columbia to assess the English

CIC AND THE CELPIP-GENERAL TEST
Applicants for immigration to Canada under the Federal
Skilled Workers and Professionals Class (FSW) and the
Canadian Experience Class (CEC) are required to provide
the results of a language proficiency test in either English
or French. Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC)
has designated the CELPIP-General Test as evidence of
English language proficiency. Immigration applicants can
fulfill their language requirements and obtain up to 16
immigration points by taking the CELPIP-General Test
and submitting the results to CIC.

The CELPIP-General Test provides Citizenship and
Immigration Canada and other users with an accurate
measurement of English language proficiency in common
usage situations.
The CELPIP-General Test is a complete English
language testing program that assesses general levels
of functional competency. The test consists of four

• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

The CELPIP-Academic Test provides universities and
colleges with an accurate measurement of English language
proficiency in academic settings. The CELPIP-Academic
Test is a complete English language testing program that
assesses higher levels of functional competency. The test
consists of four components:
• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing
All four CELPIP-Academic Test components are
completely computer-delivered in just one sitting, offering
a unique test-taking experience that requires no additional
appointments.

completely computer-delivered in just one sitting,
offering a unique test-taking experience that requires no
additional appointments. The computer-delivered
Speaking component allows candidates to demonstrate
their English proficiency without the possible confounding
effects associated with human interaction as used in other
