In 2009, we installed our award-winning biomass gasification system. This is the first of its kind in Canada and the entire pulp and paper industry. It uses locally-sourced wood waste, thereby diverting it from landfill, and heats it into a syngas, which replaces natural gas. This process is lowering the facility’s GHG emissions by 50% annually which is equivalent to removing 5,500 cars from roads or planting three million trees. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Corporately, we support a host of community-building and philanthropic endeavors, particularly in the areas of cancer research, conservation, women’s athletics and children’s health with major organizations including the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Earth Day Canada and Nature Canada. At our New Westminster facility, we support organizations on a more local level including: Supporting the Adopt-A-Room program and provide donations in-kind to the Ronald McDonald House Vancouver, to help provide a temporary home for the families of sick children; Employee-led annual fundraising campaign for United Way; Fundraising support for our local hospital through the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation; Supporting the New Westminster Fire Fighters through the annual Hyack Festival; Douglas College endowment to help students with their academic careers; and Passionate contributor of the Easter Seals Vancouver 24 hour relay to help send children with disabilities to camps across the province.
