“Look at the
wonderful
things God
made!”
Job 37:14
W
e have had an unusual winter
thus far – unseasonably
warm weather followed by
the monsoon season. It has
been confusing to plants. Do
we grow or go dormant? Plants are
especially susceptible to cold when
it is warm and then quickly turns
cold. If you know that a sudden
cold is coming, remember that your
outdoor plants are in better shape
to survive cold if they are well
hydrated. We have a good supply of
frost cloths, both bags and sheets, to
protect tender growth on your plants.
But Spring is around the corner!
Soon it will be time to begin
pruning trees and shrubs. This
can encourage rejuvenation of
aging and weakened plants. Most trees and shrubs can be pruned at the end of
February or the first of March, but it is very important to note that there are
some exceptions. Plants that bloom on old wood or plants that bloom in Spring
should not be pruned now or you will be cutting off the blooms. If you could use
a short course on pruning, join us at Green Thumb on Saturday, February 27th
at 10:00 am. Charles will entertain and enlighten with a live, hands-on pruning
demonstration. You will learn when to prune, what to prune and why to prune.
Your correct pruning can revitalize your plants and encourage more blooms.
After pruning, you’ll want to fertilize your plants with ferti-lome Tree and
Shrub Food. ❧
ROSES ARE READY AND
WAITING!

GET A JUMP-START ON SPRING WITH SEEDS!
W
e are happy to carry flower and vegetable seeds from a high quality seed company called
Botanical Interests. They package many varieties of seeds including certified organics,
heirloom seeds, untreated seeds, and no GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) seed.
Their packaging is wonderful! Did you know that all of their seed packets teach organic
gardening methods? Open a packet to enjoy all of the information inside!
Visit us on Facebook to download FREE Botanical Interest coloring pages!
Plan now for your Spring garden! Give a child or a friend the gift of wonder. Give a young
child a package of radish seeds and a small plot of soil. Use a trowel to dig the shape of the first
letter of the child’s name. How fun to watch your initial gradually emerge from the soil!
We also have Seed Starting Soil and small greenhouse type kits to get an early start growing
seeds indoors. If you don’t have the time or patience to grow from seed, we will have a great supply
of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Want your plants to thrive? We have an array of soils including
Foxfarm’s Happy Frog and Ocean Forest, and soil amendments such as worm castings, mushroom
compost, and manures. ❧
ARE CRITTERS ATTACKING YOUR
LANDSCAPE?
“
“
One of the most delightful things about a garden
is the anticipation it provides.
DISEASE AND INSECT CONTROL
L
et us help you win the
battle against critters
in your landscape.
Sometimes it escalates to
all out war! Are moles or
voles digging tunnels in
your yard? Do you see
deer and armadillo tracks
and see their destruction?
There are repellants that
deter these warriors.
There are traps where you
can catch the varmints and
remove them from your
yard.
Sometimes it is a
matter of outsmarting the
critters. Are they coming
to your yard to eat grub
worms? The best solution
is to get rid of the grubs
and then the critters will
migrate to someone else’s yard.
Artificial snakes, owls, hawks, gazing balls, and
windchimes can help deter some critters. Come let us help
you outfox the critters that are munching and digging your
landscape. Deer, armadillo, mole, vole, possum, snakes,
cats, dogs… whatever the problem, we can help. ❧
R
emember to protect your apple and pear trees when
they are in bloom by spraying with ferti-lome FIRE
BLIGHT SPRAY.
We have a great product that will control almost all
sucking insects on trees, shrubs, and flowers that is EASY
to apply. Ferti-lome Systemic Insecticide Drench applied
once a year is all you need for most insect problems.
Spider mites, also a big pest here, are a different animal.
They’re actually in the arachnid family, like spiders, and
the best way to handle them is with a horticultural oil
spray. Oil sprays are a non-toxic remedy that puts a
coating on both the mites and their eggs and suffocates
them. ❧
