KOBEY’S SWAP MEET AT THE SPORTS ARENA
BASIC INFORMATION FOR NON-PROFIT GROUPS
_____________________________________________________________________________
This is not a complete list of Kobey’s Rules & Regulations. A complete packet of Kobey’s
Requirements/Rules & Regulations may be picked up at the Corporate Office or at the
Seller’s Reservation Trailer at the main entrance of the Swap Meet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Kobey’s Swap Meet operates every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 AM. to 3 PM. Kobey’s
draws approximately 20,000 shoppers each week.
REQUIREMENTS. Most non-profit groups sell “garage sale” items. A State Board of
Equalization Seller’s Permit is not required, unless selling more than two (2) times in a twelve
(12) month period, nor is a Business Tax Certificate from the City of San Diego. Information
booths do not require any permits as long as merchandise is not being sold. If selling new, handcrafted or promotional items, the organization must have a State Board of Equalization Seller’s
Permit.
NO CONCESSION ITEMS ARE PERMITTED. Food items such as produce or bread require a
Health Permit issued to you with the Sports Arena address on it. A Health Permit is required by
law for anyone selling a product that is designated to be consumed by humans. All food items
must have prior management approval. Organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Camp Fire
Boys & Girls must go through their District manager working with Kobey’s to arrange selling
cookies/candy at the Swap Meet. Groups may not sell individual candy bars at Kobey’s for their
fund raising efforts. If food is permitted to be sold, an overhead canopy is required.
PROHIBITED MERCHANDISE. Ammunition, bombs, counterfeit merchandise, cross bows,
drug paraphernalia, fireworks, grenades, guns, knives (permitted only at the sole discretion
of Kobey’s Management), mace, mace-like products, martial art weaponry, pepper spray,
pornography, rifles, stun guns, swords, tear gas, tobacco products and other such products which
Kobey’s deems unacceptable are prohibited from sale or display at Kobey’s
ENTERING THE SWAP MEET. Your group may enter as early as 5 AM. Vehicles must be in their
space or unloaded and out of the swap meet by 6:45 AM. If you arrive later than 6:45, you may
cart or carry items to your space. Vehicles parked inside the swap meet are not permitted to exit
until 3:30 PM or when management makes the end of day announcement. Each vehicle must show
proof of insurance and the driver’s current valid driver’s license. You must have your Seller’s
License (ticket for each space you will occupy) and the completed Seller’s Information Report.
SPACE SIZE. Each space is 18’ x 16’ - equivalent to two parking spaces. You may leave a
vehicle in the space as long as it does not exceed the space size.
SPACES ARE ONLY HELD UNTIL 8 A.M. If you arrive after 8 AM., another vendor may be
in your space. Vehicles may not enter the swap meet after 6:45 AM. If you arrive later than 6:45
AM, you may cart or carry items to your space. If you have any questions while at the Swap
Meet, please have a representative contact a Kobey manager.
EQUIPMENT RENTAL. If your organization has requested the use of
equipment, it is your responsibility to pick up the items in the morning and
return them before leaving. You will be asked to leave a Driver’s License as
security. The Equipment rental facility (located at the front entrance and the
back gate) will have a copy of your contract. Please identify yourself and they
will give you the items requested. You may rent additional items at the posted
price.
YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR POSSESSION AS
YOU ENTER THE SWAP MEET:
1. Your Seller's License (space ticket) for each space.
2. A current valid Driver's License.
3. A current and valid automobile insurance policy or proof of insurance.

separately.
5. If required, a State Board of Equalization Seller's Permit, City of San Diego
Business Tax Certificate and/or Health Permit.

PSA AND PRESS RELEASE INFORMATION
The following information will assist you to successfully publicize your fundraising event. The key to exposure is the timely distribution of information.
Two sample press releases are attached. The PUBLIC SERVICE
ANNOUNCEMENT is a short announcement that is sent to radio or TV stations.
These are read on air as a community service. The GENERIC PRESS RELEASE
provides all the general information regarding your event. This is sent to
newspapers. Use the attached forms as your guides. These should be submitted
on your organization's letterhead or good quality white paper. Be sure your
organization’s name, address and phone number of a representative is included
on all information sent.
PSA's should arrive at the radio and/or TV station at least three (3) weeks before
your event Generic Releases should arrive two (2) weeks before your event for
daily or weekly publications. For monthly publications, verify with the
publisher. Allow 2 - 3 days for mailing.
It is very important to localize a release going to your community newspaper.
Print "NEWS OF LOCAL INTEREST" on the top of the release and on the outside
of the envelope. If you have a photograph for your event, i.e. photos of key
personnel or merchandise to be sold, send it with the Generic Release to your
neighborhood newspaper. Always identify who and what the picture is by
writing the information on an adhesive label and attach the label to the back of
the photo. Never write directly on the back of the, photograph. The best
photographs are 8 x 10, black and white glossy.
One of your best resources for spreading the word is the people in your
organization. Don't overlook getting information to them and getting them
involved with bringing others to your event. If your organization has a
newsletter, make sure the event is prominently featured - in several issues if
possible. Repeating announcements at meetings, socials, games and other
events is crucial.
It is important that you deliver the goods! You should be sure that you indeed
do what you have publicized on the day of the event. Sending out information
stating you are selling crystal ornaments to raise money for your soccer team’s
uniforms and actually offer rummage to finance a team trip is bad public
relations and bad business practice.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR EVENT!

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL EVENT AT KOBEY’S SWAP MEET
• Arrive early - gates open at 5 AM. Vehicles must be in their space or unloaded by 6:45 AM. If you arrive later
than 6:45, you may cart or carry items to your space. Vehicles parked inside the swap meet are not permitted
to exit until 3:30 PM or when management makes the end of day announcement. Your space is reserved until 8
AM. You must be in your space by 8 AM or another seller may take it.
• It’s helpful to have two or more people in the morning to help with set-up and early shoppers.
• Never leave your personal items or valuables unattended. A ‘fanny pack’ is recommended for your change.
$10.00 in quarters and $20.00 in $1’s is good to have to start.
• Grocery bags and newspapers (for fragile items) are appreciated by shoppers.
• A receipt book for any tax deduction requests (if someone just makes a donation).
• A sign or banner advertising your group’s fund-raiser encourages shoppers to spend at your booth. Include the
purpose of your event and photographs of your organization.
• Put your good stuff on clothes racks. Boxes with like-items (i.e. children’s clothing, men’s clothing, shoes)
can be placed on the ground.
• When dealing with garage sale items, it is usually best not to price items - this allows shoppers to bargain with
prices. Some “large ticket” items may require discussion as to what amount you will accept for the item.
• Parking attendants will direct you to the appropriate line if you enter through the main entrance off Sports
Arena Blvd. If your space is in rows K - T, enter through the Kurtz St. gate behind the Sports Arena.
• You must have your hand stamped if you leave the Swap Meet and plan to re-enter during the day. Kobey’s
provides five (5) free passes for your helpers who come later in the day.
• Rest rooms are available inside the Sports Arena from 7 AM - 2:45 PM. You must enter through the West or
North entrances of the Arena.
• If your organization has requested the use of equipment (tables, chairs), you must pick them up at either the
front equipment rental location or the rental trailer near the back gate. Items must be returned by 3:30 P.M. You
will be asked to identity yourself and leave a driver’s license or $20.00 deposit. You may rent additional items at
the posted rate.
• Announcements are available from 9 AM - 2 PM. An announcement form, with instructions, will be sent with
your tickets and passes. Complete the form and bring it to the announcement booth at the main entrance the
morning of your event. It will be read two times during the day - a fun way to announce your group’s event at
Kobey’s!
If you encounter a problem while at Kobey’s, please contact a manager for assistance.
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!
