• IDNs registrations – since the IDN
standards are accepted (Maturity Level:
Draft Standard)

Because:
• NASK can not take the responsibility for end-user
software vendors and guarantee proper IDN functioning
(proper resolution)
• NASK has no ability to provide services in different
languages:
– Contact Center for Registrants (currently: Polish &
English; German - soon)
– Contact Center for Registrars (currently: Polish,
French, English)
– Invoicing (currently: Polish & English)
• We should support at least languages of all minorites
living in Poland (Germans, Lithuanians, Ukrainians,
Lemks, Bielarussians etc.)
Plans:
• Optimistic: No restrictions for different
languages, no variant tables
• Pessimistic: Polish only (at the beginning) but
no „variant tables”/”bundles”
• FCFS only
• ACE versions only (xn-- only)
• Others than „xn--” prohibited

Subject of the Agreement: domain name

Letters-Digits-Hyphen:
• 26 Latin letters without diacritical marks,
• 10 Arabic digits and
• hyphen "-"
(for IDNs it’s ACE version of domain name)
No influence on direct registrations
No influence on EPP
Trademarks protection
NASK registers domain names on FCFS
basis and we do not check “rights” (ONLY: the
EPP-XML request should be valid).
We can not anticipate how the Arbitration
Court will deal with IDNs. It is not a problem
for the Registry.
Influence on Contact Center
Problem:
potential customer calls and asks how to register
i.e. „Wiesenhüttenplatz.pl”.

libidn, IBM IDNA Demo, GNU IDN Library)

NASK’s accredited Registrar.
Role of the Registrars
We expect Registrars will play the major
role in IDNs.
Registrars may provide professional
services in different languages, dedicated
helps, special phone lines etc.
Hoffman draft?
• Very restrictive approach (very “conservative”)
NASK’s approach (just plans, no final decisions):
• No variant tables (it’s impossible to prepare
variant tables for all languages, it’s impossible to
verify if the variant table is OK or NOT)
• No automatic registrations of “equivalent” domain
names (it’s against our Terms and Conditions)
