Saturday, January 16, 2016 Page 3A - Malvern Daily Record MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 2016 MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MLK museum preserves King’s legacy and dream By Tresa Erickson Mention the name Martin Luther King, Jr., and his famous "I Have a Dream" speech may come to mind. Few people are not familiar with King and his work in the fight for civil rights. Much has been written by and about King, but for a real glimpse into his life and work, a visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site is in order. Established on October 10, 1980, the site houses several buildings affiliated with King. There is the home on Auburn Avenue, where King was born in an upstairs bedroom on January 15, 1929. There is Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King served as pastor alongside his father. There is the visitor center, where events of the Civil Rights Movement and King's involvement in it are chronicled. There is Fire Station No. 6, where exhibits are held. There is the King Center, where King and his wife, Coretta, are buried, and much, much more. Of all the buildings on the site, the boyhood home, church and center are perhaps the most popular. Built in 1895, the Queen Anne-style two-story boyhood home of King features a parlor, study, dining room, kitchen, five bedrooms and two bathrooms filled with period pieces and some pieces belonging to the King family. King's maternal grandparents bought the house in 1909 and his parents moved into it in 1926. They left the home in 1941, at which point it was turned into two separate homes, one of which King's brother resided in during the 1950s and 1960s. Tours of the home are limited to 15 people and provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Ebenezer Baptist Church continues to serve the community today. Many of King's family served there. His maternal grandfather served as pastor there, starting in 1894, and helped build the congregation substantially. In 1960, he served as a co-pastor with his father and remained in that capacity until his death in 1968. The church is currently being restored. The King Center belongs to the King family and was started by King's wife shortly after his assassination in 1968. For many years, the center was housed in the basement of the Kings' family home. In 1981, the center was finally moved to the building on Auburn Avenue. The center houses all types of exhibits and media regarding King's life and work. Between it and the church lies the Kings' final resting place, complete with a reflecting pool. There are many other features within the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site, including a memorial tribute to Mohandas K. Gandhi and the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame paying tribute to various individuals involved in the fight for equality for all. Millions visit the site every year, and you can join them.
