Modesto, CA- Beyer High School’s Robotics team, the Iron Patriots, won the Engineering
Inspiration Award and were awarded entry into the 2016 FIRST World Championship in St
Louis, Missouri on April 26-30. Team 4135 received a grant from NASA for their work to spread
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to students at area elementary and middle schools.
Having just finished their 5th year as a team, the Iron Patriots are the first team in Modesto City
Schools’ history to compete at a world championship. They joined more than 20,000 students from 900
teams representing 42 countries at the world’s largest robotics competition.
The Beyer High School Iron Patriots competed in international alliances, attended conferences on
how to improve their skills as programmers, leaders and fundraisers and had the opportunity to meet
with future employers and collegiate representatives. Keynote speakers at the event included the NASA
Administrator and musician and philanthropist Will.I.Am., who visited with members of the drive team.
The Engineering Inspiration Award was presented to the Iron Patriots for their work in assisting in the
creation of nine FIRST Lego League and two FIRST Technical Challenge teams for elementary and middle
school. These teams included the establishment of a team at Modesto’s Franklin Elementary School. For the
past two years, the Iron Patriots have hosted FIRST Lego League tournaments where teams from all around
California come to compete. The Iron Patriots also mentored a team in Los Angeles via Skype.
The Iron Patriots pride themselves on the fact that every former team member is attending college
despite their financial situation, far outpacing Stanislaus County’s extremely low four-year college rate.
Involvement in the program introduces students to hands on learning of engineering and mathematics,
in addition to giving them opportunities in problem solving business, leadership, public speaking,
advertisement, and writing. Volunteer mentors assist the team with programming, electrical and
mechanical skills during the six-week build season support the Iron Patriots. FIRST Robotics completion
challenges are released in early January and the team attends competitions in Madera and Davis each
March. Robotics may be the way to future, but we are much more than robots.

Beyer HS will be partnering with the Center for
Educational Partnerships at UC Merced to provide the
Parent Empowerment Program to our parents. This is
a 10-week program designed to provide parents with
information to assist their students in high school, but
also to provide information and knowledge to help their
student reach their goal of attending college—and that
starts in the 9th and 10th grade.
Part of the program is to provide parents with a trip to a
local college providing them with first-hand knowledge of
what is available to their student.
Seating is limited to the first forty parents who register.
Registration information will be provided early in the
school year.

Beyer’s Renaissance program recognizes student
achievement for academics and/or character. Renaissance
students receive recognition every quarter based on their
achievements in the previous quarter. Students earning
Renaissance in any quarter are eligible for prizes and recognition
which could include the following:
• Renaissance t-shirt
• Classroom incentives (each teacher Recognizes Renaissance
students differently)
• Participating in quarter rallies and activities recognizing
just Renaissance students.

What is PowerSchool?
With PowerSchool, parents will be able to access vital
information about their children quickly and accurately.
They can see the results of tests and assignments as soon as
they are recorded, enabling them to intervene quickly and
communicate with counselors and teachers, if necessary.
Day in and day out, PowerSchool will help parents help
their children achieve their potential.

Parent Reminders from the Attendance Office
•
Student Early Check-Out: Students are encouraged to make medical appointments
after school hours and/or on student non-attendance days. Students will be released
and receive excused absences for appointments only on the written approval of parents
or guardians.
The student’s parent/guardian should send the written note to school with the
student. The student should obtain a “readmit/check-out” slip from attendance before
school. This process will expedite the student’s approved departure at the scheduled
appointment time.
Absences are to be cleared within seven days after the student returns from the absence.
• Messages/Personal Items: The attendance office does not hold items for students to
pick up or to be delivered. Phone messages cannot be taken and delivered to students;
this is disruptive to the learning environment. Please make arrangements with your
student ahead of time.

Tutoring Learning Center (TLC)
The Tutoring Learning Center (TLC) had over 4,200 student visits last year. TLC is open
before and after school every day in I-25 to assist students in all subject areas. There are also
computers available for students to complete online research, type writing assignments and
check their grades on PowerSchool. Encourage your student to attend TLC for extra help.
Every Course Counts for GRADUATION
It is important that parents and students understand that every course counts towards
graduation, whether it is a math class or an art class. Every class earns credits that meet a
graduation requirement type. If a student does not pass a class with a passing grade of A, B,
C or D, he/she will need to remediate those credits lost in a class Period 0 or 8, during ESS
(Extended Summer School) or during Summer School in June. Stay informed weekly of your
student’s academic progress in PowerSchool and ensure they are passing ALL of their classes.

Permissible School Fees, Fundraising And Donations
The following are specific exceptions to the prohibition on fees, charges and
deposits at the kindergarten through 12th grade level. These fees, charges and
deposits are legally permissible because they are specifically permitted by law.
1. Charges for optional attendance as a spectator at a school or District
sponsored activity.
2. Charges for food served to students, subject to free and reduced price
meal program eligibility and other restrictions specified in law.
3. Paying the replacement cost for District books or supplies loaned to a
student that the student fails to return, or that is willfully cut, defaced or
otherwise injured, up to an amount not to exceed $10,000.
4. Fees for field trips and excursions in connection with courses of
instruction or school related social, educational, cultural, athletic, or
school band activities, as long as no student is prevented from making the
field trip or excursion because of lack of sufficient funds.
5. Medical or hospital insurance for field trips that is made available by the
school district.
6. Charges for required medical and accident insurance for athletic team
members, so long as there is a waiver for financial hardship.
7. Charges for standardized physical education attire of a particular color
and design, but the school may not mandate that the attire be purchased
from the school and no physical education grade of a student may be
impacted based on the failure to wear standardized apparel “arising from
circumstances beyond the control” of the student.
8. Charging for the parking of vehicles on school grounds.
9. Fees for school camp programs, so long as no student is denied the
opportunity to participate because of nonpayment of the fee.
10. Reimbursement for the direct cost of materials provided to a student for
property the student has fabricated from such materials for his/her own

possession and use, such as wood shop, art, or sewing projects kept by
the student.
Reimbursement for the actual cost of duplicating public records, student
records, or a prospectus of the school curriculum.
Fees for transportation to and from school, and transportation between
school and regional occupational centers, programs or classes, as long
as the fee does not exceed the statewide average nonsubsidized cost per
student and provided there is a waiver provision based on financial need.
Fees for transportation of pupils to places of summer employment.
Tuition fees charged to pupils whose parents are actual and legal residents
of an adjacent foreign country or an adjacent state.
Tuition fees collected from foreign students attending a District school
pursuant to an F-1 visa, equal to the full unsubsidized per capita cost of
providing education during the period of attendance.
Fees for an optional fingerprinting program for kindergarten or other
newly enrolled students, if the fee does not exceed the actual costs
associated with the program.
Fees for community classes in civic, vocational, literacy, health,
homemaking, and technical and general education, not to exceed the cost
of maintaining the community classes.
Deposits for band instruments, music, uniforms and other regalia which
school band members take on excursions to foreign countries.
Charges for eye safety devices, at a price not to exceed the district’s actual
costs, in specified courses or activities in which students are engaged in,
or are observing, an activity or the use of hazardous substances likely to
cause injury to the eyes.
A family may be charged for a program of supervision of children before
and after school.

Playing through the pain can worsen an injury; encourage athletes to
speak up if they think they’re hurt.

California Scholarship Federation (CSF)
The California Scholarship Federation, CSF, emphasizes very high standards of
scholarship and community service for California high school students. Founded in
1921, CSF is the oldest scholastic scholarship institution in the state of California.
CSF Life Membership is achieved by qualifying in four or more semesters
during the last three years of high school and one semester must be in the senior year.
To qualify for CSF, a student must earn sufficient grade points from pre-approved
courses, the majority of which must come from University of California accepted
coursework.
Students earning Life Membership, earn the right to have the CSF Gold Seal
emblazoned on their high school diploma and wear a white robe with a gold stole
and cord at graduation symbolizing this honorable distinction.
Students must apply for CSF membership each semester they wish to qualify.
CSF applications for 2015-16 Semester 2 (Current Students Grades 10-12) will be
available on the Beyer website in August. Be sure to apply by the posted deadline
each semester. Students are encouraged to apply for this prestigious academic
recognition honoring outstanding academic achievement. See Mrs. James (Library)
