Even though she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in August 2012, she knew it happened for a reason and she knew she wanted to use her wish from Make-A-Wish® Colorado as an opportunity to give back and help others facing similar circumstances. Jenna’s wish is even more special as it marks the 4,000th wish granted by the 30-year-old organization. Read about Jenna’s wish come true on page 4. Connect with Us Join Make-A-Wish Colorado (WishColorado) online: It All Started With a Wish... Staff Dear Friends, Joan Mazak, President & CEO I’m sure many of you know this, but Make-A-Wish® Colorado was founded in 1983, in honor of my 7-year-old daughter, Jennifer. Jennifer had a liver condition that prevented her from living the life of a healthy child. Similar to many of our wish kids, Jennifer was not able to participate in normal childhood activities and spent a great deal of time in the hospital. One day Jennifer received a very special gift from the KIMN Chicken, a local radio mascot. The KIMN Chicken spent the day with my daughter and left her feeling extra special. The experience was one that I will never forget and is one that I deeply cherish. Just two weeks after she received this special visit, Jennifer passed away. The memory of my daughter and the joy she found during this experience left me feeling stronger and I wanted other children who were dealing with life-threatening conditions to experience this same sense of hope that my daughter did. Thus, the beginning of Make-A-Wish Colorado. With your help, we will continue to improve the lives of Colorado children with life-threatening medical conditions by providing them with hope, strength and joy. Kaitlyn’s wish to go to Walt Disney World® Resort, 1997 Kaitlyn was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia when she was only 18 months old. This took a toll on her entire family, drastically changing their lives and daily routines. Instead of having play dates and visits to the park, Kaitlyn and her family spent their time at the hospital for treatments and check-ups. It was a lifestyle Kaitlyn dealt with and one that offered little respite. When Kaitlyn was referred to Make-A-Wish® Colorado, she was only 4 years old, but she knew exactly what she wanted for her wish. She wanted to go to Walt Disney World® Resort to meet her favorite characters, characters who had provided Kaitlyn with comfort throughout her treatments. During her wish experience, Kaitlyn, her sister and her parents got to meet the many famous Disney® characters and go on the world-renowned rides. “I vividly remember my mom and dad having to stuff socks in my shoes to make me tall enough for most of the rides,” said Kaitlyn. “We laughed and laughed – that is a very happy memory of mine.” Kaitlyn’s wish was an opportunity for her and her family to enjoy the little things in life that provide laughter and positivity, regardless of Kaitlyn’s medical condition. When she was 5 years old, Kaitlyn went into remission and remains cancer free to this day. She is now a sophomore at Colorado State University studying to be a veterinarian. She has a passion for horses and competes in various riding shows around the state. Looking back, Kaitlyn still remembers her laughter-filled wish as an experience that gave her the strength to fight leukemia and win. Josh’s wish to have a shopping spree, 2000 In 1999, Josh was a happy high school freshman and an all-star athlete in wrestling and football. But, after bumping heads with a fellow wrestler during a tournament and getting a concussion, Josh’s cat-scan revealed something that no teenager would ever anticipate. The scan showed that Josh had a cancerous tumor in his brain. This meant that he had to stop playing the sports he loved and instead, had to start visiting the hospital. In 2000, a few months after the diagnosis, Josh was referred to Make-A-Wish Colorado and his wish was to have a shopping spree. “My condition was a financial burden on my family so I decided to use some of the money I was given on the shopping spree to purchase gifts for my family,” said Josh. “The wish gave us a break from everyday realities and we were able to enjoy spending time together.” Today, Josh is 28 years old and is celebrating 11 years of remission. He owns a health and wellness company, Unification Point, and teaches individuals and corporations about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. Knowing personally the impact a wish come true can have on a child facing extreme odds, Josh has also become a Make-A-Wish Colorado supporter, paying it forward so other children can receive the same sense of hope, strength and joy that Josh did during his wish. We Will Miss We celebrate the lives of the wish kids who are no longer with us, and we extend our deepest sympathies to each child’s family and friends. Abraham S. Alex I. Anise F. Austin W. Wish Colorado | 2012 – 2013 ∙ 3 The 4,000th Wish Jenna is a 16-year-old girl from Centennial, but was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor in August 2012. The news came as a complete shock, but she and her family remained positive, knowing they would get through the dark times together. A passionate, life-long writer, Jenna would journal through her long days of chemotherapy and hospital visits. It gave Jenna an outlet for her thoughts and helped her cope with the realities she was facing. Upon being referred to Make-A-Wish® Colorado in October 2012, she knew she wanted to create something that could help other children battling similar conditions. Jenna decided that her wish would be to write and publish a book about her experiences with cancer. The wish provided Jenna with the perfect opportunity to give back and put her writing skills to the test. Throughout treatments, Jenna’s family would think of ways to distract her from the pain and hardships of cancer. These distractions took on a whole new meaning for Jenna, and soon the entire family was involved in Jenna’s distractions – distractions that became affectionately known as “adventures”. From the very beginning, Jenna knew being diagnosed with cancer was part of God’s plan for her. In fact, “God’s got this,” was Jenna’s response to learning of her diagnosis. Despite the countless treatments and some memory loss, Jenna Photos by Karen O’Hern 4 4∙ Wish ∙ Wish Colorado Colorado || 2012 2012 – 2013 – 2013 Jenna, 16 Brain tumor I wish to write and publish a book “Jenna’s wish was to give others hope. I pray this book will do just that.” – Johanna, Jenna’s mom Photos by Karen turned to the support of her family, friends and her faith to keep her strong. Thus, the title of her book: “God’s Got This: Adventures in Hope”. Using her journals as a starting point, Jenna met with her very own team of accomplished writers, publishers and designers to discuss ideas for her publication. Jenna’s vision for the book included bright colors and whimsical fonts for children and adults to enjoy and reflect upon. She also wanted the book’s cover to include butterfly graphics – something that had become an important symbol of hope and new beginnings for Jenna throughout her journey. The book is written as part memoir and part workbook, and gives others the opportunity to journal about their own experiences while reading about Jenna and the rollercoaster of emotions associated with cancer. During her wish experience Jenna was able to be part of every aspect of writing and publishing a book; from meeting with the publishing team to discuss the book’s cover, to seeing the pages being printed right before her eyes. After the books were printed, Make-A-Wish Colorado hosted a book-release party to celebrate Jenna and her wish. Close friends and family were invited to read her book and celebrate Jenna’s accomplishment. Jenna’s wish was extra special as it marked the 4,000th wish granted by Make-A-Wish Colorado. During the book-release party, Make-A-Wish Colorado President and CEO, Joan Mazak, spoke about Jenna and her unique wish that gives back to other children, as well as celebrating Jenna as the 4,000th wish recipient in the chapter’s 30-year history. Jenna spoke, reading an exerpt from her book and informing her guests of her future plans to give the book to children in hospitals to provide them with hope. With the book printed, published and in the hands of children, Jenna’s journey is nearly complete. She grows stronger every day, and can proudly say that she is cancer-free. Jenna will return to school in the fall to complete her final year of high school at Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora. She is hopeful of regaining her full memory as she slowly wanes off her medications. Grateful for her wish experience, Jenna and her family are fundraising for the second run of books to be printed. She wants to continue helping others by reaching out to other hospitals to distribute her book. Like a butterfly, Jenna overcame the obstacle of change and discomfort to become a beautiful specimen of hope for a bright future, not only for herself, but for others. Wish Colorado | 2012 – 2013 ∙ 5 “It came as a complete surprise. I had no idea and couldn’t help but get emotional.” – Logan Logan, 14 Ewing’s sarcoma I wish to spend the day with the Stanley Cup Photo by Anne Hanson, Arvada Hockey Logan’s Wish to Spend the Day with the Stanley Cup® Logan is a typical teenage boy – he loves his friends, family and playing sports, especially hockey. He started playing floor hockey as a young child and learned the skills to eventually make the transition to ice hockey. Since then, hockey has become Logan’s life. He joined the Arvada Hockey Association as a young child and, has played hockey with many of the same teammates ever since. They practice on a regular basis, training to become better players and in the process, building invaluable friendships. Logan and his teammates take the game very seriously and train with the goal of one day winning the ultimate prize, the holy grail of hockey, the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, Logan’s life changed in December 2012, when doctors found a tumor in Logan’s body, a tumor that just so happened to be the size of a hockey puck. The tumor was Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of cancer. Upon the diagnosis, Logan’s priorities shifted from beating opponents on the ice to beating cancer. However, being the optimist that he is, Logan’s dreams of becoming a professional hockey player and one day holding Lord Stanley’s Cup™ high above his head were never diminished. In fact, it made him want it all the more, and when referred to Make-A-Wish Colorado, Logan knew immediately what his wish was—to share the Stanley Cup with all those who were supporting him through his battle with cancer. Thanks to Discover and the National Hockey League® (NHL), Make-A-Wish® Colorado granted Logan’s wish, and did so as a surprise to Logan. On a sunny Wednesday morning in May, Logan and his mom got in the car to go to Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children for some blood work. As Logan sat waiting for lab work, little did he know that the Stanley Cup was nearing him and would soon be making a surprise appearance in his hospital room. After the initial shock, Logan and the Stanley Cup made their way 6 ∙ Wish Colorado | 2012 – 2013 to another room at the hospital so that other patients and hospital staff could have their photos taken with the Cup. From there, Logan, his mom, dad, brother, and of course the Stanley Cup, rode in a limousine all the way to the APEX Center in Arvada, where more than 200 members of the Arvada Hockey Association, Logan’s teammates, Arvada Mayor Marc Williams and surprise guest, Colorado Avalanche® goaltender, Jean-Sèbastien Giguere, were waiting. Beaming from ear to ear, Logan donned his hockey gear and skates and brought the Stanley Cup to center ice where he then delivered a speech that brought tears to everyone in the audience. He honored friend and fellow Arvada hockey player and wish recipient Ian, who lost his battle with cancer just weeks before, noting that Ian’s spirit gave Logan the strength to fight each and every day and was someone that Logan would tell his children and grandchildren about one day. Logan also thanked his family, the Arvada Hockey Association and the greater Arvada community for their support throughout his illness. The wish experience was extra special for Logan because he was able to thank his friends and family with the ultimate hockey lovers dream – spending the day with the Stanley Cup. Logan skated with his teammates, talked about the Stanley Cup® Playoffs and reminisced about old times and favorite memories from previous hockey seasons. He wasn’t the sick kid, he was just “Pizzy”. He laughed, he cried and he walked away a stronger person, ready to fight harder and return to the ice again, cancer-free. The one thing Logan refrained from doing was holding the Cup high above his head. That he said, admitting his superstitions, is reserved for when he wins the Stanley Cup as a professional hockey player. 30 Years of Volunteering With a staff of 17, Make-A-Wish® Colorado relies heavily on hundreds of volunteers to help make wishes come true for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Jake, 3 Liver transplant I wish to have a Boston Terrier puppy Jake’s Wish to Have a Puppy When Joel and Stephanie found out they were pregnant, all they cared about was having a healthy baby. Little did they know that their son would be born with liver complications and would need a liver transplant at the tender age of 3. Even though Jake was sick, he was still a baby full of personality. He liked to play with his brothers and he loved animals. From the moment he could talk, he told his parents that he wanted a puppy, but his parents said that they couldn’t get a puppy until after his transplant. In 2012, Jake received his liver transplant and soon after was referred to Make-A-Wish Colorado. Knowing their son, Jake’s parents knew exactly what he would wish for so they worked with Make-A-Wish Colorado to plan the wish in secret and surprise Jake with his very own puppy. On the day of his wish Jake and his family jumped in the car to run some “errands”, but in actuality, they were headed to PetSmart to pick up Jake’s puppy. Jake was very excited and couldn’t believe the puppy was his! After playing for a while, Jake did a little shopping at PetSmart to make sure the family’s new addition, who Jake named Lado, had plenty of food and toys. Today, Lado is growing up and fits right into the family. They take him on walks and he plays well with the kids, especially Jake. “Jake lost the first four years of his life to his illness. Now, he is healthy and the puppy is helping him enjoy his childhood and grow into a strong young boy.” -Stephanie, Jake’s mother Wish Colorado | 2012 – 2013 ∙ 9 Michael, 10 Leave A Legacy of Hope, Strength and Joy Chronic kidney disease I wish to go to Hawaii Wishes create memories that last a lifetime. I want to help make those kids’ dreams come true.” Because of Bob Alberts and the hard work of his executor, Deb Anthony, Make-A-Wish Colorado will be able to grant more than 70 wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. We especially appreciate the following companies, foundations, organizations and individuals who donated $250 or more, or provided in-kind services between June 1, 2012 and July 31, 2013. Individuals Malana, 6 Accute lymphoid leukemia I wish to go on a Disney® Cruise Malana’s Wish to Go On a Disney® Cruise Malana is a 6-year-old girl who loves all things Disney®. Malana also has acute lymphoid leukemia and was referred to Make-A-Wish Colorado because of her condition. Malana decided that her one true wish was to go on a Disney® Cruise with her family. The cruise was the perfect balance of relaxation and playtime, something that Malana’s family desperately needed. One of the highlights from the cruise was riding the water slides, specifically the “AquaDuck®”, the cruise ship’s premier water coaster. The wish experience was an opportunity for this family of five to enjoy life as a family again. Malana and her siblings were able to play while her parents relaxed and at the end of the day, all were able to make lasting memories on this extra-special family getaway. “Finding out that Malana had leukemia was one of the worst days of my life, but seeing her happiness on the wish made us remember to stay strong and focus on the good things in life.” -Vien, Malana’s father 14 ∙ Wish Colorado | 2012 – 2013 Anonymous (4) Gary and Christie Aboussie Elisa Adam Shane Adam Barbara Adams Lennie Adams Mona Adelgren Estate of Robert R.
