Welcome to the Neighborhood Bocce season will begin in October. This year we will be playing on Wednesdays and Thursdays instead of Thursdays and Fridays. That way we will not be interfering with the residents’ meetings. Forty people have signed up, so we will have eight teams and eight substitutes. The captains will meet in September and choose the teams, which will be announced at the cocktail party on Thursday, September 29. On Thursday, September 22, we will have a practice session at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to this practice session but it is mainly for residents who have never played before. Let’s make this bocce season a pleasant and enjoyable experience for everyone! Jackie Garn, Bocce Director When you talk with Nona and Mike Kovalcin you quickly realize the important role that water has played in their lives. Boats of all kinds have given the couple many hours of pleasure in their almost 50 years of marriage. Pitch & Putt Golf is on the Horizon If you have signed up to play Pitch n’ Putt golf this season, a informational cocktail party will be held on Thursday, September 22 at 4:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room. Teams will be announced and schedules handed out. If you haven't signed up yet...there’s still time! Call Dr. Barry August at ext. 135. After many years in Yonkers, NY where Mike was a chemist at AK20 Chemical and Nona spent 40 yrs in Nursing Administration, the couple bought a vacation home in 1988 on Siesta Key before moving permanently to Hidden Harbor in 1991, where they docked their boat out the back door and sailed southern waters every chance they had. After long, successful careers they were living in paradise! Food for Thought Where would we be without good ole’ Mr. Wood. In September of 1819 (and no, none of you were even born yet) one Mr. J.J. Wood patented a plow with interchangeable parts. Without Mr. Woods we may never have the world’s largest bread basket in the heartland of our great country. Fast forward to today and we have massive agri-farms being run by massive corporations using seeds that have been genetically engineered by even larger corporations. Nona volunteered at Sarasota Memorial, planning staff orientation programs while Mike maintained his Power Squadron association. While familiar with northern waters, with more time they explored others. Mike led a group of 12 boats to Stuart, Fl. thru Okeechobee and with other boating friends chartered a boat to sail around the San Juan Islands in Washington State. They also enjoyed travel to Europe and Hawaii. Mike has been a member of the National Power Squadron for 55 years and helped to educate 18 squadrons about safety, maintenance and staying out of trouble whether in a powerboat or a sailboat. Co-incidentally Dr. Barry August, who also lives at Lakehouse West, was one of Mike’s “students”. Both men are part of the “Sunshine Boys”, members of the Sarasota Power Squadron who enjoy weekly luncheons here and remember the days when they owned their own boats and were out on the water whenever they had the opportunity. As the Director of Culinary Services here at Lakehouse West, I am constantly searching for the best local products to give you, our residents. I am currently working with our produce company on many exciting products to bring to your plate. Some of these locally grown items are custom blended, organic greens to use in our salads. These greens have some of the highest micro-nutrient levels of any foods on earth. We will also continue to have our fantastic heirloom tomatoes but instead of being trucked halfway across the country, they will be grown just out east of the interstate. Not only will we be having some of the best produce available, they are highly sustainable, growing in weeks not months and they will be grown right up the street. This is a win for us all. Eat Well, Live Well! Chef Gordon Realizing that boating was becoming more difficult as they grew older, and with the support of a niece and nephew who live in Sarasota, Nona and Mike sold their home and boat and decided to join other friends who had become “landlubbers” at Lakehouse West, enjoying a relaxed life and making new memories with new friends.
