Fine Arts Society Notes The Birthday Card program at Lakehouse West is designed to raise money for charity. Residents make a monetary donation to sign a birthday card for residents celebrating birthdays. The money collected is then distributed to local charitable organizations. Below is a letter from a recent recipient of this program, the Loveland Center & Village in Venice Fl. Loveland Center offers job coaching, supported employment, living, respite, education and social services for adults with developmental disabilities January was a rewarding month for us with operas, ballets, orchestra, etc. February will be even more exciting with seven Fine Arts events plus the Sarasota Institute for Lifetime Learning Music Monday Series. With all of these events occurring during the season, it is wise to purchase tickets early. Tickets are sometimes available at Lakehouse West for selected programs. Refer to the Events Book located in Mimi Brodsky, Fine Arts Associate the Great Hall. Arrive & John Siepp, Fine Arts Director early at those venues 45 minutes to an hour for those that do not have assigned seating, for example the AMC theater. The bus will usually leave Lakehouse West one hour in advance. Transportation is available free of charge with minimum attendees required. Sign up in the Events Book. Dear Ms. Beck & Lakehouse West Residents, The Loveland Center is honored to be the recipient of your Birthday Card signing event. Because of your support and dedication, Loveland Village is one step closer to reality. Because of you, adults with developmental disabilities will have a living option that is safe, affordable, and most of all…a home to call their own. It is such an exciting time for us-Loveland Village will be a place to call home where our students and others with disabilities can live with their friends and family. Just A Reminder…...On Borrowing Books There seems to be some confusion about taking books from our Library so we’d like to go over the procedures. We do not use individual library cards, but we do have some simple ways to track our books and keep them circulating. When you choose a book, go to the Notebook on the desk and record the following: A. The date that you are borrowing the book B. The author’s name C. Your name D. Your apartment number E. The last column is where you will record the date when you return the book Your donation brings us one step closer to making Loveland Village a reality for many of our students. Thank you for your support of the Loveland Center and thank you for being part of the Loveland family. Aimee Holmes, Chief Development Officer On the last page of the book you are borrowing you will see a place to record the date you are borrowing the book (this should be the same as “A” above) and your apartment number (same as “D”). This will also help you to easily find the entry in the Notebook on the desk when returning the book. Please do not exchange a book with another reader until you have officially returned it and the new reader has officially borrowed it in his/her name. Books are for residents only. Home Health Aides should not be borrowing our books for themselves. If a resident asks his/her aide to take out a book for them, the resident will be responsible for the book and it is the resident’s information that is noted in the notebook on the desk in the Library. Ginny Cardozo & Lois Foote Library Co-Chairmen Coming Soon to Lakehouse West: The Loveland Follies Valentine Show! Students from the Loveland Center, adults with disabilities will perform their Valentines show on February 19th at 10:00 a.m. in the Great Hall. 4 Welcome To The Neighborhood Meet Dorothy Zrimsek Meet John “Jack” & Margaret “Peg” Smith After raising three children and teaching kindergarten in Freeport, Il., Dorothy and her husband retired to Siesta Key, but when he died, she found herself lonesome at the Pepper Tree community and began to explore other options. Enter Lakehouse West! Jack and Peg Smith are among our newest neighbors and another example of why we say that the nicest people choose Lakehouse West for their new home! Here Dorothy is making new friends and has started a Thursday Mahjongg group when she learned that others enjoy the game too. She’s also joined up with the bridge group. The couple met at Oberlin college; faith and music have been an important part of their marriage. Jack became a minister of the United Church of Christ serving churches in Vermont and Miami while Peg, a college music major played the piano and organ and directed choirs. The family grew to include two sons now living in Sarasota and a daughter who lives in the Catskills in NY state. A 20- year volunteer at the Gulf Gate Library’s “Friends of The Library” bookstore, Dorothy is delighted to be close enough to continue doing that. Her artistic greeting cards are sold by the “Friends” to benefit the Library. She also creates custom made cards for others, remembering one of her most unusual requests: a card for a man being released from prison! His family wanted everyone to know he was no longer incarcerated and ready to connect with good friends again. Dorothy says it was great fun and a challenge too. Moving to Sarasota in 1972, Jack served as Executive Director at Plymouth Harbor for 18 years; in retirement he became interim Executive Director at Bay Village. He has also served on the Board of The Salvation Army and the Jefferson Center. For 25 years Peg commuted to Boca Grande where she played the organ on Sunday mornings at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She also has been Music Director for Jewish congregations in Sarasota and Miami and is presently organist-in-residence at Church of the Redeemer. Interviews by Ginny Cardozo, substituting for Shirley Kritt She was a member and past president of the Sarasota Concert Association. Recently Dorothy became our Thursday library volunteer at Lakehouse West, where her experience is already helping to make a difference. While Peg and Jack enjoy their community outreach they savor the relaxed Lakehouse West lifestyle, particularly the pool and the library and report that their cat, Natasha, likes it here too! 5 Health & Wellness Director of Nursing & Health Center Dermatology Services Our Lakehouse West Director of Nursing is Kim Smrekar.
