also be a practice session to get us
accustomed to the new playing surface.

on the bulletin board. We hope many new
residents will sign up as well as the old
faithfuls.

Lakehouse West “Pitch n Putt”
Season Starts Soon
Calling all golfers-new, older, good, or not so
good. Even if you’ve never played on a
team-We want you! Our golf at Lakehouse
West is more like the miniature golf many of
us played with our children and grandchildren. It’s not the 18 holes of the good ole games that we used to
play competitively. We have fun! We have clubs and balls for
you to use if you don’t have your own. There are challenges from
two tees-one a little longer and the second one has
challenges of its own. There is putting on a large
green with four holes. Each hole is different and
scoring is done for the pitch-ons and the holes in
one. Come out and watch a game. We play on
Saturdays starting on October 10 at 9:00 a.m. We
don’t play in the weather like we used to. It’s a fun
match between people we enjoy and—you don’t
need to make the tee times. It’s a special way for
new people to enjoy our Lakehouse West Country
Club! Questions? Call me at ext. 249
Jean DeMeritt, Golf Director
Michael's career began at Yoder’s restaurant where he
worked for 3 1/2 years and learned the basic kitchen
protocols. After Yoder’s, he worked for Rustic Bar and
Grill where he was trained in fine dining methods.
Michael then became involved in a family nutrition
program teaching nutrition to elementary students all
over Sarasota county. This was a very rewarding
experience for him.
Michael was then hired at Lakehouse West as a Sous
Chef, and after a period of time, he became Executive
Chef. Michael is now in charge of the complete
management of the kitchen and Dining Room as Food
& Beverage Director. His duties are to oversee the
kitchen for independent and assisted living, which involves managing the staff. He also orders all the food
and oversees the preparation of many delicious dishes.
Michael’s plan for the future is to create new recipes
while maintaining and improving nutrition.
Check Out The New Fence!
Michael enjoys spending time with his family,
especially his grandparents. He is a gym enthusiast,
enjoys playing basketball, and loves to walk his dog.
If you haven't been outside
lately, take a walk around the
grounds and see the beautiful
fence that was just installed
around the backside of
Lakehouse West. This new
fence is going to perfectly show
off the gorgeous landscaping
that we all enjoy so much here
at Lakehouse West.
The residents at Lakehouse West would like to offer
our appreciation for his enthusiastic approach to his
new position.
Congratulations and good luck Michael!

Making A Difference
Lola Lakehouse
What makes Lakehouse West so special? It’s probably the
sense of community that residents have. Helping others and
being involved in the community has long been a tradition
here at Lakehouse West. Newsbits would like to share the
contributions of the following residents.
Have You Traveled Lately?
Having taken a few tours, before and “after retirement”,
I am wondering about the accuracy of my observations
on some of the general characteristics of my fellow
travelers (not the political kind).
Growing up in Michigan, Jean DeMeritt
developed an early appreciation for the
environment and the outdoor life. Jean has
Golf Director
continued to stay connected, returning to the
Jackie Garn
Mackinac area every summer to a home she
has owned that is happily near her family.
Jean has lived at Lakehouse West for 12
years, staying active and involved by regular
walks to nearby Red Bug Slough and
arranging Saturday morning Pitch & Putt golf
Jean DeMeritt games. Larry Katz and the late “Brud” Arthur
were the originators of this and were pleased to find Jean
willing to take over 4 years ago. As Jean says “It’s not all
about winning. It’s a chance to meet others, laugh and have
fun together” which pretty much sums up her philosophy. Sign
-up begins in September and the season opens in October
continuing thru April. Scores are recorded weekly by team
captains and posted. Play-offs determine winners who are recognized at a banquet in mid-May. Watch for sign-ups next
month and be ready for a good time. If you don’t have a golf
club, don’t worry, one will be available for you.
Does everyone wear white sneakers for every
occasion? Is the cell phone a mandatory accessory,
even in the rain forest? Now that it is able to take
pictures, has it really replaced the traditional camera?
Is there anyone who doesn’t shout out “Jeeze, I can’t
believe this” or “How are things back home?” when
standing before the altar of a church? Or feel obliged to
discuss a recent knee replacement while a docent is
showing us where Anne Boleyn met her end?
Who helps these people choose a vacation destination
where art, history and different foods are an important
part of the experience? Why is it necessary to share all
that they see and do, immediately, with the people back
home? Are they fearful of forgetting?
Does having six unique ring tones truly identify who’s
calling? I think not because every single caller seems to
be answered with “Hello, who is this?” leading me to
believe the responder hasn’t a clue who is trying to
reach him-or why. In today’s world cell phones are
everywhere-in the medinas of Marrakesh, beside
Egyptian pyramids, and in Tibetan tents. No longer
seen as a novelty, but as a necessity they have truly
changed the meaning of staying connected, not always
in the best way, I think.
Let’s mention another special resident, Carol
Pearson. When she lived in Dayton, OH,
Carol served as CFO for HUD. Working
with her daughter who was involved with
programs for low-income seniors they
prepared chicken dinners, barbeques and
other get-togethers to promote socialization
among seniors. Eventually the program
expanded to 5 states where groups visited
parks and historical sites for 3 to 5 days.
And, Carol remembers, they played bingo
Carol Pearson
using players’ names instead of numbers.
Carol had been coming to Sarasota since 1994 and when she
met Nelson at his 80th birthday party (arranged by her
daughter) the two eventually married. In April of 2013, family
members suggested a move to Lakehouse West to give the
couple added assistance. One of the social activities they came
to enjoy was Saturday night Bingo. When a new “caller” was
needed Carol stepped in, with some help from Nelson and
others to keep the fun going. Join them on Saturdays at 7:15
p.m. in the Card Room. It’s always a good time, the cost is
minimal and you’ll laugh a lot.
