Prestige Prestige Care - On the Move On the Move
VOLUME 1 ISSUE 2 ---- Spring 2012 Prestige Care - On the Move The Prestige Harold Editorial Board Beth Delamarter Hollie Fowler Nancy Leifheit Cody McCausland Eric Murk Holly Remington Jeanette Smith Jeremy Tolman Let us be grateful to people who make us happy--they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” ~ Marcel Proust Great things often start from small beginnings. Prestige Care and Prestige Senior Living are no exception. Founded in 1985, our origins begin with the legacy of Sarah Delamarter, a pioneer in Oregon's long-term care industry. Sarah first began utilizing her nursing skills to care for seniors in her home in 1946 as a means to support her family. As Sarah’s reputation for compassion and excellent care spread, the demands for her services grew very quickly. Soon she was able to purchase a large house in Wood Village, Oregon and converted it into her first senior care community. Prestige grew over the years to include 21 skilled nursing and rehabilitation communities in Alaska, Washington, and Oregon. Prestige Care of Reedwood was welcomed as the most recent addition on January 1, 2012. Reedwood is located in Southeast Portland and is very proud of the cultural diversity of residents and staff and history of excellent care provided. Prestige has always sought ways to improve care, setting the stage for innovation. Featured in each edition of the Prestige “Harold” will be facilities that have created special programs to help residents and their families enjoy an active and productive life. This edition features the Senior Wish Program in which Porthaven Care Center plays a very active role and the Rose Program at Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation in Newberg, Oregon. At Prestige, our promise is to personally touch lives every day. It is a philosophy of caring based on core values that are at the center of all we do. ______________________________________________________________________ RESPECT · INTEGRITY · COMMITMENT · TRUST PAGE 2 THE PRESTIGE HAROLD Meet Central Support If you hear a quiet voice or a person who fills in where needed, it is probably our amazing and talented Administrative Assistant and Managed Care Associate, Trish Campbell. To enhance the services provided provided by the hospice and to offer additional palliative care care to to those not selecting hospice, Chehalem embarked embarked on on the “Rose Program”. The program is based on the the belief that care during a resident’s last days must must encompass the holistic factors that makemake-up up that individual; the physical, social, mental, emotional, and and spiritual factors. As well, this care must address address the the resident’s family by ensuring they experience our our compassion and support as their loved one is dying. dying. Death can be overwhelming to the resident and their their entire family. One of the tangible means Chehalem uses to demonstrate their compassion and support support is is the “Rose Basket”. “The “The Rose Program was more comfort and support than you can ever imagine - it meant SO much to us” us” is what the wife of a dying resident recently shared with DeEtta Butler, DNS DNS at Chehalem Care Center. The basket is given to the family with recognition recognition of of their grief and impending loss. The items in the basket basket are explained to them so they realize the thought and and care that went into creating it for their use. Did you ever wonder what you might say to the family at times like this? Nothing you do can make the pain go away but talking from your heart can help. Words Words of comfort might include expressions of sorrow for their their loss letting them know you care and are there to help. help. Sharing favorite, warm memories of loved ones can can bring comfort beyond belief. You might want to start a conversation asking the spouse about how they met met or or ask the children about a special lesson they learned learned from their parent. Hearing is one of the last senses senses to to leave us. What a privilege it is to help residents hear special memories before they die and to allow family family the opportunity to share how much their loved one one means to them. PAGE 4 THE PRESTIGE HAROLD Prestige’s Expressions memory care program offered at Discovery, Chehalem, Hood River and Molalla emphasizes knowing and using the elements of a person’s life story to structure the resident’s days and bring quality to their life. We make it a priority to learn every resident’s life story as well as 100 unique things about each person we care for. This enables us to personalize and tailor the services we provide. Life story work is a very important element in communication when caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. How can Life Stories help communication? ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ To explain patterns of behavior To suggest why past experiences can affect the person in the present To remind caregivers that people who cannot communicate verbally still have something to say and contribute To have a hard copy, a scrap book of the person that can move with them as they pass through various services To involve the caregivers and families in the care of their loved one To remind health workers, caregivers and families of the life experiences of the person with dementia To encourage interaction with the client and the staff To see beyond the disease Prestige has been invited to present our unique approach to memory care at the International Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease in London, England this coming March. The conference is a very prestigious event, catering to attendees from over 70 countries; including researchers, doctors, care providers, scientists, and families living with dementia. Approximately 1,200 participants are expected to attend. Being asked to give a presentation on our Expression program at the conference is the highest level of recognition; acceptance to the conference is highly competitive. Please join in congratulating our entire Expressions team on this wonderful achievement. Core Value Winner Karen Lane, Timberview is an exceptional employee who personifies what Prestige Care is all about. For over 25 years, Karen Lane has worked as a dietary aid at Timberview Care Center. She is reliably on time, rarely sick, and regardless of the weather, Karen will be here. She’s never owned a car and lives where she does so she can walk to work. Her job is more than a job. Her place of employment gives her purpose and she recognizes she makes a difference. The staff and residents have become her extended family. She comforts and reassures others and is the first to volunteer her time for community events. The little things that make a difference are things that come natural for her. Always a smile, and a bound in her step, Karen walks down Elm Street every morning, her little dog Georgie, leading the way. She stops in to visit her friends at Timberview. In the afternoon she makes the trip again and clocks in for her job. Respect, Commitment, Integrity and Trust are values Karen lives, both on and off the job. She is not only pleasant and kind, but also well regarded as a pure and honest person. John Clay, the Director of Nursing Services at Timberview explains, “any one who knows Karen, knows she is the Prestige core values.” Our Prestige Family, please meet Karen Lane.
