WELCOME
Welcome to the Third Annual La Costa Film Festival! The vision of bringing the magic of
Hollywood back to La Costa began almost four years ago, but to our pleasant surprise
we’ve discovered that in many ways, it had never left. With over 4,500 people enjoying
last year’s Festival, the one question eagerly asked was, “What’s happening next year?”
One big event that is happening all year long is the 50th anniversary celebration of our host,
the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. The Resort’s major enhancements have raised the bar for the
already world-renowned destination, which has provided the ideal backdrop for the Festival.
‘The Reel Pitch’ is a drama-filled new competition which will play out before a live studio audience.
You’ll witness up to 10 promising storytellers/filmmakers as they pitch their ideas to a panel of
Hollywood studio executives, courtesy of our partner Mandalay Sports Media (MSM). The panel
will select one winner to help refine their pitch to an MSM studio partner and assist them in
fulfilling their dream.
There are over 45 films which include at least 3 World Premieres and 18 films are supported by
Q&A’s with the actors, directors and producers who will passionately share their vision with you.
Three unique viewing venues include: the 30x17 foot outdoor starlit screening on Center Court
at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa; the Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas with plush reclining leather
seating and gourmet dining table service; and the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the
Carlsbad Dove Library, which offers a spacious and relaxed hacienda style courtyard ideal
for mingling afterwards.
Opening Night’s ‘Sip & Savor’ Gala will combine the red carpet experience with the best
in local restaurant cuisine, craft brewers, boutique wines and live entertainment. Friday
night will include the presentation of the Ambassador of Sports Award to Sacramento
Mayor Kevin Johnson and our ‘We Remember’ program that will feature a special tribute
to our military families in memory of 9/11. The screening of The Great Alone will follow and
then the ‘We Remember’ After-party featuring comfort food, craft beer, boutique wine and
rousing live entertainment will end the evening on a high note.
The La Costa Film Festival Honors Gala on Saturday night will feature the Sports Competition
Film Awards, the high school $1,000 Scholarshare prize winner and the Legacy Award honoring
of actor John McGinley.
Sunday ends the Festival with, ‘It’s a Wrap’ the closing party at the Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas,
where you may rub shoulders with celebrities and filmmakers who wanted to linger a little
while longer.
So tell your neighbors, friends and especially anyone who loves films that “the most happening
place to be this year” is the La Costa Film Festival!
All the best,
Michael Callihan

THANK YOU
We have often used the analogy that putting on this Festival was
like planning four weddings in a row, when you’re not sure who’s
getting married or who will attend the ceremony. Add in the fact
that virtually all aspects of the Festival are performed by volunteers
with already very full lives. We can’t express our gratitude enough
for their selfless contributions. The Festival Team in particular has
each contributed countless hours ever since the ending of last
year’s events, that all total would be the equivalent of more than
a full time job.
We especially thank our sponsors, whose support has allowed
greater expansion of the arts to our community and beyond.
Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in particular has been our largest
partner from the very beginning, and has continued to help us
expand. Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas has also been a consistent
partner who proudly supports the arts. All of our partners
represent a great commitment to our community and deserve
your support. We ask that you recognize them with your
patronage again and again.
Thank you to the City of Carlsbad for the continued support from
Mayor Matt Hall, and the entire City Council, Sam Ross and the
Visit Carlsbad Board, and Vincent Kitch of Arts and Culture.
We also wish to thank all of our surrounding communities for
their many contributions, participation and help in promoting the
Festival. The San Diego Board of Supervisors has assisted us with
their guidance and financial support. We appreciate that our area
colleges and universities have responded enthusiastically to our
outreach for collaborating and creating internship opportunities.
We’re grateful that more North County High Schools have entered
the short film competition exclusive to them with the chance to
win the annual $1,000 ScholarShare prize. It’s exciting to see the
younger talented filmmakers who participated in the free two-day
clinic for Middle School students and collectively produced an
entertaining film screened at the Festival.
In reality, we have more people to thank than allowable space,
so for all those we have missed—Thank You!
