This year’s Orientation theme is PICTURE YOUR MOMENT and we encourage you to live that theme to the fullest in the year to come and throughout your college career as you make your mark here at Simmons. Experience the best of Simmons by trying new classes, meeting new people, exploring Boston, and stepping outside of your comfort zone. At the same time, make Simmons your new home and let your own unique personality shine through. We are so excited that you are here, and we look forward to your participation in all aspects of Orientation. The Office of Student Leadership & Activities and the Orientation Leaders are ready to assist you, so please do not hesitate to ask questions if you need help. Orientation will be one of your first memories of Simmons, and we are committed to making it one of your fondest! Have a great year and Go Sharks! -The Office of Student Leadership & Activities AUGUST 29 SATURDAY RESIDENT CHECK-IN AND MOVE-IN alumnae hall, residence campus 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Welcome to your new home! Following your resident student checkin and receipt of Orientation materials in Alumnae Hall, you will be directed to your residence hall to begin the move-in process. Peabody Hall residents should move into their rooms before proceeding to Alumnae Hall for Orientation check-in. Residence Life The staff with Residence Life will provide you with everything you need to get into your new residence hall. Dining Services Staff from the dining services team will be on hand to discuss the various meal options on campus, help you select a meal plan that best fits your needs or discuss any dietary restrictions or concerns. Technology Assistance Members of Technology Services and Support will be around throughout the day to answer questions and help you connect to the Simmons Network. For assistance with your computer, please look for Technology Services and Support staff members, or call 617-521-2222, option ‘0’ for assistance. Health Center Take the time to meet with our Health Center staff to understand the services available to you on campus and get information on immunizations and insurance. Fenway Card Office If you did not submit a photo for your ID, please go to the Card Office located on Academic Campus in the Palace Road Building to get your photo taken after you have moved in and checked into Orientation. AUGUST 29 SATURDAY MORNING SNACKS Location One: Residence Campus Quad, Residence Campus Location Two: Peabody Hall, 5th Floor Lounge 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Snacks and treats to keep you energized during move-in will be available in front of Bartol Hall and the 5th floor of Peabody Hall. SIMMONS COLLEGE BOOKSTORE MOBILE LOCATION residence campus quad, residence campus 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The Simmons College Bookstore will be on the Residence Campus during move-in to provide you with essentials for your residence hall room or Simmons gear to show your Shark pride. The Bookstore on the Academic Campus will be open from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. today. Check in to get your schedule for the next few days leading up to the start of classes and then join all of your classmates for the rest of the day’s activities. COLLEGE WELCOME AND LUNCH academic campus quad 12:30 p.m. The Simmons Community will gather to welcome new students and their families for the start of their time at Simmons. President Helen Drinan, Director of Undergraduate Admissions Ellen Johnson, Student Government Association President Nguyet Ly and Vice President of Student Affairs & Associate Provost Sarah Neill will all share remarks to welcome you. Everyone is invited to enjoy lunch immediately following the welcome. ORIENTATION GROUP MEETINGS see your orientation packet for location 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Reconnect with your fellow group members from Summer Orientation or meet your new fellow orientees as you start your first day at Simmons. Your Orientation Leader will review the complete Orientation schedule and provide time for you to ask questions. Bring the Orientation folder you received at check-in with you. COMMUTER STUDENT MEETING AND DINNER faculty/staff dining room, ground floor, main college building 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. This session is mandatory for commuter students. This session will provide you with the opportunity to meet other commuter students and learn more about important resources available to you. Following this orientation, head over to the Residence Campus for Italian Night in Bartol Hall. All Commuter student meals are covered during Orientation. TRANSFER STUDENT MEETING AND DINNER Bartol Hall, Residence Campus 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. This meeting is for any students who are transferring into Simmons College from a previous institution and living in Dix, Arnold, North, Smith and Evans Halls. Come meet other transfers and learn from the Residence Life staff information about community living, fire safety regulations, and campus policies. Then join your fellow students for Italian Night in Bartol Hall. This session is mandatory for all transfer students. FIRST FLOOR MEETING & DINNER (RESIDENT STUDENTS) residence campus, individual floors (simmons, morse, mesick & peabody) 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. During this meeting your Residence Advisor (RA) will cover important information regarding community living and campus policies. You will also be able to start building a community with other students on your floor. Then join your floormates for Italian Night in Bartol Hall. This session is mandatory for all residence students. FIRST YEAR MEETING & DINNER (RESIDENT STUDENTS) residence campus, south hall first floor lounge (south hall residents) 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. During this meeting your Residence Advisor (RA) will cover important information regarding community living and campus policies. SAFETY IN THE CITY C101 & C103, First Floor, Main College Building Boston is your backyard and along with that comes the responsibility of making sure that you are keeping yourself and your belongings safe. In this session Simmons College Police Officer, Amanda Marshall, and Coordinator of Simmons Violence Prevention and Educational Outreach, Gina Capra, will share several strategies to promote personal safety and the safety of others. They will be covering topics ranging from bicycle safety, commuter safety, sexual violence prevention, bystander intervention and more. UNDERSTANDING THE SIMMONS HONOR CODE Linda K. Paresky, Third Floor, Main College Building All students are expected to fully understand the principles of the Honor Code, which has been in practice at Simmons since 1907. This session will outline the Honor Code, and the policies and procedures for both the Honor and Judicial Boards. LUNCH WITH YOUR ORIENTATION GROUP Bartol Dining Hall, Residence Campus 12:00 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Join your Orientation group to check in about how the past few days have been, get answers to questions you still have, and share what you are excited about. Meet your outing group on the residential quad to start your journey and explore the area with new friends. Take the time to learn all about Boston has to offer during your time out in the city. TECHNOLOGY @ SIMMONS Alumnae Hall, Residence Campus Learning new technology can always be challenging. This session will teach you everything from how to print your assignments to using Moodle for your classes. Simmons requires that all students are adequately prepared to utilize technology to enhance their learning experiences. We will also cover what it means to use social media safely and effectively while at Simmons and beyond. TITLE IX & YOU: A PRIMER FOR NEW STUDENTS AT SIMMONS C101 & C103, First Floor, Main College Building Many of us know about Title IX as “the law that made school sports more equitable for girls and women”. But there is much more to it. Colleges and universities who recieve federal funding have an obligation to protect students and respond promptly to any form of reported Gender-Based discrimination including sexual harassment, assult and intimate partner violence. Come and learn about your rights as a Simmons student under Title IX, reporting options, resources the College has to offer and the important role you can play in contributing to a safe and welcoming campus for all! MATHEMATICS COMPETENCY EXAM L012, Ground Floor, Lefavor Hall Every student must demonstrate competency in basic college mathematics by the end of their first year at Simmons. You can do this by successfully passing the Mathematics Competency Exam during Orientation. The results are also used to determine your math placement should you decide to take a math course and can impact your fall course schedule. LANGUAGE COMPETENCY EXAM L012, Ground Floor, Lefavor Hall Language Placements are administered to make sure you are registered for the appropriate course level based on your competency in a particular language. We strongly suggest that most students start their language requirement in their first semester. DEFINING YOUR SIMMONS EXPERIENCE C103, First Floor, Main College Building During this interactive session you will learn about the Simmons academic requirements from A to Z and the resources available to support you throughout your time at Simmons. You will also learn about academic deadlines, the add/drop period, the pass/fail grading option, grades, Dean’s List, and Credit for Prior Learning. This session is required for students who did not attend Summer Orientation. ESPECIALLY FOR NURSING STUDENTS M222, Second Floor, Management Building Nursing faculty and student leaders want to welcome their newest members to the Simmons Nursing community. Join us for a short information session followed by an opportunity to meet your Nursing faculty and student leaders. This information session will cover information about the coursework a student will experience ranging from the natural sciences, to social sciences, to humanities. This program is designed to provide students with strong preparation for admission to medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, and veterinary schools. She has spent her entire career helping people understand the difference between tolerance and creating safer campuses where differences are valued and respected and justice thrives. By challenging biased jokes, assumptions and other “low level” community offenses, Eva advises students to take responsibility for the work by actively creating the kind of world they want to live in by practicing on their school campus. Don’t just talk about it, be about it and then do something! This session is mandatory for all students. F.A.C.E.S. BREAKOUT SESSION See your Orientation packet for assigned location. 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This session is the second part of F.A.C.E.S. (First-Year Appreciation of Cultural Experiences at Simmons). Facilitated by F.A.C.E.S, Simmons Explore facilitators and other student leaders, this program demonstrates the importance of cultivating a greater understanding of and appreciation for diversity and inclusion in the Simmons community. F.A.C.E.S. will help prepare you to live, learn, and work in a pluralistic society and encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities presented during your time at Simmons. This session is mandatory for all students. Led by representatives from the Registrar’s Office, this program will go over the basics of how to navigate AARC and how course registration will work second semester when you are registering yourself online. They will also be able to answer any miscellaneous questions students might have about schedules or requirements, especially pertaining to the new curriculum.
