In my reflections I considered how many individuals it requires to keep our church going. I felt perhaps this is also a time to express our gratitude to everyone who work together to make our church -- William Arthur Ward wrote, “Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” I want to express my gratitude to all of you -- the Church Board for all their wisdom and decision making; Joanne McCord and the Pastoral Care Committee for their devotion and caring for all our members; those providing the ministry of healing touch to all who ask; the Worship committee for providing consistently meaningful worship opportunities as well as all those who support this work – Sound and Projection, Greeting, Communion Servers... Karen Trembath and the Choir for all of the beautiful music which gives our worship a special quality; Cheryl Bradshaw and the Bell Choir for the ringing of joy in our sanctuary; the Finance Committee and Treasurer for ensuring that our finances are in correct order the Property Committee for ensuring we have a safe and secure building. As well as all those who help this committee by cutting the grass, shovelling snow, changing light bulbs..... The Ministry and Personnel Committee for offering me and the staff support as well as facilitating communication between the staff and the congregation; The bathroom Committee who have updated the downstairs bathrooms and are now starting with the main floor with renovations; The Trustees for ensuring our property and finances are well taken care of; The United Church Women for for their efforts to care for members and to reach out to the community with the many projects they support; Gloria Werboweski for planning many lunches, evening programs which offer meaningful fellowship to our congregation as well with her leadership in Catering; Catering helpers who are always there to provide delicious lunches and meals to grieving families, those celebrating special milestones and wider church groups; Meat Pie Committee, Harvest Supper Committee and other fund raising groups who help support the church financially as well as providing wonderful fellowship opportunities; Our Presbytery Representatives, Camp Kasota East Representatives, Scout Representative who ably communicate with the congregation about these groups; Janelle Carey for providing our children with innovative and meaningful programs; Candice Thomas for all of the work, innovation and support that she provides me and the congregation; And every congregation member for the support they offer me and each other. We are blessed!!! We truly are “Christians: Committed , Caring, Community” Blessings, Margaret 6 TRUSTEES Members: Margaret Lange Stuart Little Darwin Baker Kathryn Moffat Ken Fulton Dave Munro Gene Thomas A complete list of information about the Trustees can be found in the Congregational Trustees Handbook. I will mention some of the duties and information that you might find useful. -members of the Board should be members of the United Church of Canada -the minister is included -the number of members are to be from 3 to 15 Duties and Powers I will just list a few of these. -for the most part all gifts, legacies, and such are to be made to the trustees. If the gift is not designated then the trustees either turn the money over to the treasurer if it is to be spent immediately or else the trustees decide how it is to be invested. Estate legal concerns are decided by the province. The Handbook goes on at length but in everyday practice the trustees safeguard the property. Mostly it is incumbent upon the trustees to ensure the proper amount of insurance is carried. We meet several times a year to review the insurance and in one important instance we met this year to supply input when by the courts over a disputed will. If you have any questions please feel free to talk to me. Respectfully submitted, Stuart Little BENEVOLENT FUND The Benevolent Fund was established so the minister could offer assistance to those in need in our community. We purchase gift certificates so the office is able to help those who come in when the minister is away. This year we helped folks on 23 different occasions. Our help has been for the purchase of food and/or accommodation. Thank you for supporting this ministry of our church. Respectfully submitted, 7 Margaret Lange BOARD CHAIR It is time to look back at 2014 and see how the year has played out. Thanks to the generosity of our congregants and those who use the church we were able to pay the $70,000.00 “Steam Heat” installation bill in record time. We celebrated after church with cake and coffee. The Board decided to continue meeting every other month except for July and August. We had a Full Board meeting in April and welcomed new Committee members. Our other Full Board meeting was held the beginning of September starting with a Thank You dinner. March 1st we had another workshop with Brenda Watt. She gave us many “new” ways of dealing with Stewardship. We used this information to do an activity in October. In April we held our second annual Women’s Retreat. We had a Cafe Chocolat - lots of good sharing, meditation and chocolate. It was well attended. We were very excited to be part of the Tree Planting/Meditative Garden Project with the 2nd Innisfail Girl Guide Unit. We now have a beautiful spot to stop and rest or just enjoy the outdoors. Again the completion of this was celebrated with many of the girls and their leaders attending church and staying for lunch with the congregation. Thanks to the congregation who helped with this project as well as the weeding and watering. For the month of October we worked on Gratitude. As a congregation we participated in answering 4 questions-one for each Sunday. 1. What is it about Innisfail United Church and your faith that matters to you? 2. Who are the people that make a difference for you at Innisfail United Church? 3. If you could dream anything for Innisfail United Church what would it be? 4. In what ways will you support the ministry, vision and dreams of Innisfail United Church in the coming year? A summary of the ideas will be compiled and we will choose some to work on. From our gratitude statements we developed a “motto”or “statement” for our church: CHRISTIANS: COMMITTED, CARING, COMMUNITY. Watch and see how often you can spot this being used. The bathroom grant came through and it was necessary to form a committee to get this underway. What a challenge! Our people give with all their hearts but not too many want to organize or head up committees. As I write we have started work on the downstairs bathrooms and hope by the time we have our Annual Meeting they are completed. A big Thanks to Bob Zinken for taking on the Project Manager for this. Also a thanks to Bruce Wagner for doing all the painting. We enjoyed 4 Sunday Sundaes this past year. The Smith family shared their Nicaragua experience; Chris Hume shared her travel to Ethiopia and the Gramma Link experience; Sharon Holoboff shared her experiences in Mozambique and South Africa and the Marr’s shared their travels in Tanzania. There was much to think about and learn. We look forward to having the downstairs bathrooms finished and the main floor bathroom project underway. Keep tuned for many interesting changes to take place. Thanks to the paid staff: Margaret, Candice, Joanne, Janelle, Gloria, Crystal, David and Karen for giving the time that you do to keep our church running smoothly. A big “Thank you” to Bob 8 (Treasurer), Charles (Vice-Chair) ,Ernest (M&P), Clayton (Finance), Gwen (Pastoral Care), Catherine (Worship), Louie (Property), and Dorothy (UCW) our Executive Board. Special recognition goes to our pianists: Janet, Catherine, Marg, and Cheryl (also bells) and to our after church coffee organizer: Marie. Together we make “CHRISTIANS: COMMITTED, CARING, COMMUNITY”. Thank you to the many who have chosen to go on PAR. This really helps with budget planning and is an efficient way to make sure your church is looked after even if you are not in attendance. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.” ~Author Unknown Respectfully submitted, Nyna Marr WORSHIP COMMITTEE “Let us play and dance and sing! Teach us to serve in everything!” #605 Voices United Another busy year at Innisfail United Church has flown by! There is always much to celebrate when looking back on the church year - as well as new plans and goals to think about! The Worship Committee has continued to work well together through 2014 and I would really like to thank the members of this group for their hard work and dedication. I have been away frequently during the past year and the committee has always filled in where necessary and carried on admirably in my absence! The Worship Committee meets every other month to review and plan for the worship needs in our church. We endeavour to support Rev. Margaret in her work and to assist her in planning for worship. Included in the committee's usual tasks are things such as communion preparation, sanctuary decorating and supplies, pulpit supply provision and support for the music ministry. Members of this committee were available to start or lead services during the year . Our congregation once again enjoyed the opportunity to worship with the folks out at Wimborne and we so appreciate their friendship and hospitality! Easter and Christmas events and services were well attended and enjoyed by our congregation and visitors. The home communion program , which provides communion for folks who cannot get to church, continues to be the responsibility of the Worship Committee and is a valuable service provided by willing volunteers. Thanks to this team of dedicated people! The work of the church is never ending - faithfilled workers such as those on this committee 9 help our church to continue it's work! Thanks to each one of you! Respectfully submitted, Catherine Wagner MUSIC DIRECTOR “Sing to the Lord a new song - for the Lord has done wonderful things!” Psalm 98 Have you ever wondered what it would be like to attend a weekly worship service without music to enhance and complete your experience? Music does play an important role in our church life ! How fortunate we are to have church musicians, leaders, singers & bellringers in our midst! Thanks to all the individuals and groups who are a part of the music ministry in Innisfail United Church! The choir continues to be a small but dedicated group of singers who meet on Thursday nights to sing and enjoy each other's company! New members are always welcome and we urge anyone who is interested to join us and share our love of church music! As well as contributing to some Sunday services this past year, the choir prepared special music for Easter and sang at the Ministerial Association Advent service. And of course the annual "Candles, Carols and Cookies" event was enjoyed in December too! As time moves on and things everywhere go through changes, the church experiences change too! It isn't possible for the choir to sing every Sunday or soloists to contribute and so other ways of including music in the worship service are being explored. New technology makes it possible for us to experience music in different ways! Thanks be to God for change! As you are likely aware I have resigned from the position of Music Director at Innisfail United Church. I would like to thank the church for giving me the chance to serve the congregation in this capacity for the past number of years. Our new Music Director is Karen Trembath who brings her new talents and gifts to this position. We are so blessed to have a young woman of her ability to take a leadership role in the music life and work of our church! Respectfully submitted, Catherine Wagner CHURCH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR Another year has gone by at Church school at Innisfail United Church. On average we have had 4 kids participating each Sunday. Our children in attendance are between the ages of three and 11, with two fabulous teenage helpers, for a total of 10 “regulars”. We do have a few babies and toddlers that will help our numbers grow in the coming years. The year started off with Sheila Mielke teaching church school as I was off on my maternity leave until February. After that, the two of us took turns teaching through the winter and 10 spring. We wrapped up for the summer on Mother’s Day and began again in the middle of September. The lessons being taught are still targeted at the preschool level and then modified depending on who is at Church School! This year was different in that we didn’t host a Vacation Bible School. It was planned for and purchased for, but there were no registrations for the Saturday session we had planned. We are however still brainstorming new ways to deliver this important and fun part of our Christian Education. I did put on our White Gift Service in December which was well received. The congregation and children enjoyed it and we were able to make a very large donation to the Christmas Bureau. They suggested to us that it is 10-12 year old boys and teenagers that really need the most items. I hope to focus on this need next year. So as our year ends, I would like to thank Sheila Mielke, Blaire Bradshaw, and Kristopher Bradshaw for being great helpers at Church School. We couldn’t do it without you. Thanks also to the families that continue to support our program on a weekly basis! Respectfully submitted, Janelle Carey PASTORAL CARE COMMITTEE Another year has passed and the pastoral care committee has been just as busy as usual. We meet every month to discuss concerns, flowers, and church services at the senior institutions in town. Gwen park is now our committee head and is doing a great job. All the flowers that are placed at the front of the church are donated to someone in the congregation for whatever reason after the service. During the summer Rita Kemp supplies us well with bouquets and then we get donations from Panda at times. Rita also delivers small arrangements to congregants during the month to the homes as well as the manors in town. That keeps her very busy. We have unfortunately had to quit doing the teas at the manors due to health regulations. We really miss the fellowship and of course the residents really miss the goodies. But it is a sign of the times. We still hold regular church services at all three manors, (Sunset Manor, Autumn Glen and Rosefield Center) and we go to Sunshine Lane occasionally for a special service for them. We do as much visiting at these times as possible. Ladies night out is being attended very well. We go to different restaurants every last Friday of 11 the month and any women who would like to attend are welcome. If you are not on our phoning list and would like to be added, just give me or the church a call. Our prayer shawls are routinely given out and are always appreciated. This year we have given out 20 shawls personally, and then in March we gave 129 shawls and 28 lap blankets to the Reconciliation Council. Our shawl cupboards never go empty even with these numbers as we have very dedicated crocheters and knitters at our disposal. If you are interested in helping out with our cause, feel free to go ahead and construct shawls you can give to the church and we will distribute them as needed. As well as the shawls, Betty Quantz has started knitting little teddy bears that we donate to anyone who needs a little security bear. Let us know if you know of someone who would benefit from one of these cute little bears. They are good for young or old. The prayer chain remains active and weekly we add people to our list who need special prayers to help them out. Personally, to date, I have made 40 hospital visits, 7 new visits and 258 pastoral care visits (personal and phone calls) totally 305 contacts so this keeps me busy. I still try to read stories to those willing to listen, and I have a never ending supply of stories to share. I visit in private homes (in town and on farms), the hospital, Autumn Glen, Country Lodge, Sunset Manor, and Rosefield Center. As this year ends, I wish you all a wonderful 2015 and send prayer to you all. You are in our prayers, Joanne McCord Pastoral Care Coordinator FELLOWSHIP COORDINATOR 2014 rang in with a New Year's Breakfast with 35 attending. Great food and fellowship enjoyed by all. We were entertained and educated with 4 Sundae Sundays: Joyce Hurl and Dennis Smith—Dental assisting overseas Chris Hume—Grandma's Link Sharon Holoboff—Mozambique Experience Ernest & Nyna Marr—Africa Souper Sundays seem to be one of the most attended events, 35-40 attended every month. Free will offerings brought us $200.00 and up each month, of which was donated to the Bathroom renovation fund. The Annual Valentine's Dinner was enjoyed by all, and the Fashion Show was a huge hit. Thanks to all the great volunteers for a job well done! Our June barbecue was attended by 52 people and what a great lunch that was! We raised $286.00 and that again is going to the bathroom fund. Thank you to each and everyone of you that helped in any way at all throughout the year. Without you these events would not be possible. 12 I look forward to another active and fun filled 2015. Respectfully submitted, Gloria Werboweski WOMEN'S RETREAT This was the second year we hosted a one day retreat. On April 12, thirty women gathered to think about God's grace in their own lives and those of others. We did this through a theme of chocolate which proved to be tasty and fun as well as nourishing for our souls. A HUGE thank you to all who helped make this a significant event in the life of our church. We will be having another retreat on April 18, 2015 with the theme being “Garden Getaway”. We will focus on the seasons of our lives as we “Walk with God” Psalm 143:8b. Respectfully submitted, Margaret Lange MINISTRY AND PERSONNEL The Ministry and Personnel Committee spent most of its sessions dealing with ongoing personnel concerns. A salary grid covering a 6 year time period was developed to cover financial planning for paid Congregational Accountable Ministries. The Job Description for the Church Office Administrator’s position was completed. A 2015 Budget Proposal for the Minister and Church Office Administrator was updated and presented to the Finance Committee. Our Music Director, Catherine Wagner, officially resigned her position in September. This position was filled in November by Karen Trembath who had been working with the choir for several months. A job description was put in place. 13 An official job description for the Church Fellowship Coordinator is now being developed. Thanks to my M & P Committee : Norma Lutz, Carol Nixon and Charles Silk for their insight and time. Respectfully submitted, Ernest Marr FINANCE COMMITTEE As I looked over the minutes of our past year's meetings, it occurred to me that we spent as much time on the physical as well as financial aspects of roofing and washroom upgrade proposals. Along the way we celebrated another stewardship presentation by Kathryn Hofley, the completion of the furnace repair payment, the receipt of the Washroom renovation grant, and several successful fundraising efforts. As always, your past and ongoing support for these is again most appreciated. Gratefully, it appears our givings are up, however, at the time of this writing we still project a year-end deficit and must therefore budget another for next year. The well is almost dry. We must soon decide what we want for/from what we can pay for. Looking forward, our committee will again continue to look into and hopefully develop new strategies in funding and/or alternatively reducing our ongoing expenses over the coming year. Once again your support in all this is most appreciated. Respectfully submitted, Clayton Ross PROPERTY COMMITTEE The Property Committee decided to have a meeting every 2 months with minutes being kept. This process did not continue throughout the year. A method of keeping track of routine maintenance was put in place. Building repairs and touch up painting was done in the Christian Education building. The coal room entry was blocked off and the outside covering removed. A screened window in each of the downstairs rooms was made to open. The roof repairs are a constant. We had a meeting to talk about the posssibility of replacing the roof but decided to keep patching for the time being. Eavestroughs have been repaired. The water heater was replaced in the kitchenette. Arrangements were made for grass cutting in the summer months and snow removal in the winter months. Markers were put in place for snow removal. The Property Committee thanks 14 all the grass cutters, trimmers, waterers and snow removal workers. Property is in need of more members to help with the continuous maintenance of the church buildings and grounds. I wish to thank my committee members, Marvin Latimer, David Werboweski, Dave Munro, Gene Thomas and Lionel Walker (who has moved to Edmonton) for their support to me and to the church. Respectfully submitted, Louie Armstrong MEAT AND FRUIT PIES Our spring fruit/meat pie bee was very successful. We sold about 1600 pies. We were pleased with the added help of the 4H Clubs. The young people were so eager and quick. Thank you to all who gave their time for this project. It was decided to postpone the fall pie making until further notice. We did an order to CocoBrooks pizza and raised close to $500.00. Respectfully submitted, Nyna Marr CATERING COMMITTEE Since taking the position of Catering Co-ordinator in April of this year, we have been a very busy crew! We have a great list of volunteers that are willing to help out at any time. We appreciate everyone who helps by bringing food, serving, setting up and cleaning up. Nyna and June head up the 2 groups. Things have been running smoothly, everyone works very well together. We all enjoy what we do. We catered to 5 Funerals and 5 events. Very positive feedback from all. If you are interested and can help out with catering please give me a call! Respectfully submitted, Gloria Werboweski INNISFAIL UNITED CHURCH WOMEN Executive: President: Dorothy Munro Vice-President: Fay McPherson Treasurer: Caroline Runge Secretary: Velma Isaak Nine meetings were held over the year with an average of 11 members attending. A committee to oversee the washroom upgrades was formed in April. The basement washrooms are almost complete and totally Barrier Free. It was decided to do some reorganization on the main floor. The Office Administrator’s office will be moved beside the Minister’s office and the washrooms will be relocated. Thank you to Bob Zinken for taking on Project Manager and getting things underway and to Doug Edgar for getting the project started and Keri Graham for doing blueprints. Another big “thank you” to all who have contributed financially to the project.
