Winning driving simulator races since he was 11, Faine Kahia is planning a career as a professional racecar driver.
Teen’s racecar ambition
ROBERT STEVEN
Racing Formula One isn’t Faine
Kahia’s dream – but it is his goal.
The Taupo teenager has been
winning and placing in races
since the age of 11.
Most recently, the 19-year-old
secured two second places at the
Formula BMW Asia Cup in
Malaysia.
Next he hopes to race in the
Formula 4 South East Asia Cham-
6921317AI
pionship, which starts in August.
Kahia said success in this
series could put his career on a
fast track.
‘‘If I do really well, I’ll get a test
in Formula Renault, which is a
higher series,’’ he said.
‘‘If I do well in the Formula
Renault, it’ll pretty much be [time
to] sign on the dotted line, and I’ll
sign my life away – which is a
good thing.’’
Kahia’s goal is to secure a con-
tract with a car manufacturer and
race for them as a professional
motorsport athlete.
‘‘Wake up, go race the car, and
go home at night, and get paid for
it,’’ he said.
‘‘I don’t like to say dreams
because dreams never happen.
Goals happen,’’ he said.
The teenager is planning to
copy the career pathway taken by
Earl Bamber and Brendon Hartley.
Now contracted to race for
Porsche, the Kiwi drivers both
started on the ‘Asian pathway’ –
racing in South East Asia.
Practising on a track is very
expensive, so like most professional drivers, Kahia spends a lot
of time racing in a driving simulator at home.
‘‘Prior to driving a V8 supercar
yesterday, I had already done 500
laps around Taupo racetrack in
that very same V8 supercar. Same
supercar, same racetrack, same
everything.’’
Since finishing school at
Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, Kahia
said all his time was devoted to
training, marketing himself and
looking for sponsorship.
Kahia said he would not forget
his roots.
‘‘I’m born and bred Taupo. A
big thing for me is bringing it
back home. I love my town and I
get homesick whenever I’m
away."

YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE
FROM
THE
EDITOR
he reason I enjoy living in
medium-sized towns like
Taupo is that you get the
best of both worlds.
On the one hand, you get
access to everything you need – a
selection of retailers, good
entertainment options and a
variety of people with a full
spectrum of interests.
Our town is not so big that
when someone is hurting or needs
help then we don’t take ownership
of that. There are plenty of people
who step up and help someone on
the other side of town – because
they’re our people.
Take today’s page 3 story about
Elyse for example. That family
has already been on the receiving
end of this sort of community
spirit since before we got
involved. No doubt, today’s story
will speak to plenty of other
people too.
Having said that, there are
plenty of people out there who
aren’t aware of the inherent
generosity of most people. I hope
those people have the courage to
tell someone what they are going
through too.

Two Taupo parents received the
worst news possible after a visit
to Starship Hospital, when they
were told their daughter Elyse
(2) has less than 12 months to
live.
Elyse was diagnosed with an
aggressive, golf ball sized,
tumour on her brain stem on
April 9 this year.
Surgeons then told the family
it was inoperable.
‘‘We went to the doctors
when she started vomiting,’’
Elyse’s grandmother Jacqui
Johnson said.
‘‘The doctors couldn’t see
what was wrong.
‘‘Then she stopped walking
and talking and we got in front
of a specialist. From there it was
MRI’s at Rotorua and trips to
Starship Hospital where the
news was given.’’
There was an option of radiation therapy for Elyse.
‘‘That would have required
an hospital visit and she would
be sick with it,’’ Johnson said.
‘‘In the end her parents
decided it could extend her life
by about six weeks and it was
too much to put her through.
‘‘It was decided to bring her
home.’’
Johnson says Elyse is as
happy as she can be and the
family has been humbled by the

Gondola plan proposed
MATT SHAND
Ever thought how cool it would
be to take a gondola up the top of
Mount Pihanga to a top-class
restaurant to take in the views?
Tuatea Smallman has and he
wants to turn that dream, and
others, into a reality.
If completed the project will
see a 6.5km gondola ride to the
summit of Mount Pihanga
where a revolving floor restaurant will give stunning
vistas of the surroundings.
Smallman said the project
will have many challenges but
he is not one to shy away from
that, especially if it means
putting Turangi on the world
stage.
‘‘Its just what this area
needs,’’ he said.
‘‘We are currently looking at
finance options for the project
and we have engineers ready to
fly in and check out Mount
Pihanga to assess if construc-
tion is safe near the crater.’’
Smallman is not stopping
there with plans to create a
canal connecting the Tongariro
River to Lake Taupo on Grace
Road, with luxury apartments
flanking it, and a 22km walking
track along the Kaimanawa
Range.
Smallman announced his
plans to the Turangi Tongiriro
Community Board on Tuesday
and is currently looking for
finance options.

Media companies clash
ROBERT STEVEN
It was a battle of two media companies, six soccer balls and nine
holes.
Thursday saw the Footgolf
clash of team captains MoreFM’s
Andrew Leiataua and Taupo
Times editor Dan Hutchinson on
the fairways of Taupo Golf
Course.
Each captain reached out to
Taupo for willing and talented
soccer players to play the game.
MoreFM’s Andrew Leiataua
scoured the ranks of Tauhara
College’s football elite.
He found two young men with
some skill of foot – Matt Watston

and Jacob Klein, who both
towered at least a foot above the
radio DJ.
Hutchinson realised Footgolf
was a numbers game and reached
out to the team at Altitude
Chartered Accountants.
Young accountants Kelly Taylor and Scott Groombridge
stepped forward, boots shiny.
The two teams met at noon on
Thursday to do battle on the
green.

Hutchinson scored par for the
first three holes, giving the radio
team a fright.
Leiatua overshot the second
hole several times, causing much
mirth.
However, the skills of both
Watson and Klein came through
in the end.
MoreFM won by one shot with
a score of 135.

Noel Bennett received a $2000 surprise for his
commitment to junior athletics this week after he
was nominated as a Lotto Sportmaker.
Bennett has been involved in running the Junior Athletic Club since he arrived in Taupo in
1971.
‘‘I’ve always been involved in athletics and it
made sense to join up with those clubs,’’ he said.
Although not having children himself, has
shown dedication and care for the young children
on the club beyond most parents.
One of his responsibilities is the accurate
marking out of Taupo’s track, one of the few
remaining grass athletic tracks in New Zealand,
which the club is very proud of.
‘‘It can be a painstaking process and can take
about four or five hours for the initial marking,’’
he said.
Seeing young people reach their potential
through running is something Bennett enjoys seeing as a volunteer.
‘‘We had Bevan Docherty run with us,’’ he said.
‘‘Patrick Bevan was another and then he was
told to try out cycling, which was the right thing
to do.
‘‘So you never know who is coming through.’’
Bennet was nominated for the award by Murray Reid and he had no idea when he was asked to
come to the clubrooms what he would be receiving.
‘‘I have been injured so wasn’t sure why they
needed me at the clubrooms,’’ he said.
‘‘They stitched me up well.
‘‘I was blown away. When you are involved in
clubs you put buy things here and there and you
don’t mid because you love doing it but here I am
getting something back.’’
The $2000 can be used by Bennett to purchase
sporting goods and clothing for himself or the
clubs he is part of.
Sport Waikato district coordinator said Bennett is a very deserving candidate for this award.
‘‘It’s such a big thing to win and great thanks
go to Noel, and the Murray for taking the time to
make the nomination,’’ she said.
‘‘Without the nominations there would be no
awards.’’ Bennett is planning to spend some time
celebrating his success on his upcoming trip to
Rarotonga before returning to continue helping
the club.

Consent declined for
church building
ROBERT STEVEN
Taupo Bible Church’s application to build a 730sqm church
building at the end of a
Nukuhau cul-de-sac has been
declined.
Commissioner Bill Wasley
released his decision on
Thursday.
In his report conclusion he
wrote that the effect of adverse
traffic ‘‘on the safety and
efficiency’’ of the street could
not be ‘‘adequately mitigated’’.
‘‘Notwithstanding the conditions offered by the applicant
and that Ms Wood concurs with
such conditions, I am of the
opinion that some of these conditions such as the use of traffic
wardens are not practicable and
that there will be a more than
minor effect on Herapeka Street
through on street parking and
increased
traffic
along
Herapeka Street.
‘‘Whilst at some stage it may
become a ‘through’ street, it is
currently a residential cul-desac and is currently totally residential in character,’’ the report
said.
The report said matters
related to property values and
private covenants on the titles
were not resource management
considerations, and beyond the
commissioner’s jurisdiction to
consider.
The report follows a hearing

Putting forward the case for Taupo Bible Church’s proposed church building
on Herapeka St last month were surveyor Sue Slegers from property

and written submission to commissioner Wasley.
Church pastor Jerry Craven
said he would speak with the
church congregation before
making comment.
Resident Jackie Robinson,
who works as an architectural
designer, submitted in opposition to the proposal.
She said the outcome came
down to a practical decision.
‘‘Commissioner
Wasley’s
decision to decline resource
consent for the church is not an
outcome in which to boast
victory, but to celebrate that
resident’s rights have been
acknowledged, considered and
protected by a planning process
which is in place for such conflict in belief. The residents are
relieved.
Anglers fish in the off the river bank at the Tongariro National Trout Centre. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.
Minister has new angle
Changes to the regulatory process for the Lake Taupo trout
fishery will make management
more responsive according to
Conservation Minister Maggie
Barry.
Daily bag and fish size limits
will soon be solely approved by
the Minister of Conservation
instead of going through the
Cabinet process.
‘‘The new process will make
it easier to respond to the natural year-by-year changes in fish
size and abundance,’’ Barry
Match
maker
said.
‘‘Currently, this takes too
long and is a cause of some frustration for anglers.
‘‘What it means is that in a
year where there are more trout
spawning we can raise the bag
limit to allow anglers to catch
more – and likewise, in a year
where fish are smaller on average we can reduce the size limit
to protect breeding stock and
safeguard the fishery.’’
Fishing regulation changes
for Taupo can also now be
published as Gazette angler
notices, as happens in all other
New Zealand trout fisheries.
‘‘The Taupo Fishery Advisory Committee, Tuwharetoa
Maori Trust Board and the
Taupo angling community have
all been supportive of this
change,’’ Barry says.
Gazetted today, the new
regulations will take effect from
May 19. The trout fishery is
worth $11 million a year to the
Taupo economy and supports
around 300 jobs.

I write in response to the article
regarding the Turangi Mall that
featured in your paper [P3, April
15].
The Turangi Central Business
District has for many years faced
changing dynamics with the
township growing out of its
Ministry of Works infancy into
the tourist centre of some 3000
permanent residents that is today
– plus a further 3000 in our wider
catchement.
I can confirm that of the 49
floor level commercial units
available in the Mall [excluding
council offices and Library], 32
are currently occupied, 16 are
empty whilst a further unit has a
party in the process of conducting
a shop fit-out.
This means that we have a 66
per cent occupancy rate in the
Mall itself so far more are full
rather than empty.
On the periphery of the CBD,
private development has meant
that some businesses have
relocated from the Mall to the
fringes seeking greater foot traffic
and a higher profile rather than as
reported, moving away from town
altogether.
Any business person has the
right to make strategic and
logistical decisions to guarantee
that their businesses are well
positioned for the future.
As a Councillor, in partnership
with Christine Dally and Wayne

keen to see a Feasibility study
undertaken of the Town Centre.
Only when this is complete will
we have a sound understanding of
what viable options are before us
and the challenges we might face
as a community.
We need to acknowledge that
personal shopping habits are

presence of the digital age. So to,

must we embrace our changing

only once we have all of this
information in our headspace,
will we truly know how to
respond so as to ensure the

There is far greater positivity
amongst the local business
community than was reported
and words such as ‘helplessness’

The first King Country girls U18 rugby team.
Captaining the first ever King
Country girls U18 sevens team
has seen a Taupo-Nui-a-Tia
student getting a call up to a
development camp.
Ora Williams has played
rugby for just over a year but
already has big plans to make it
to the professional level in
sevens.
Last week she led the team in
the NZ Rugby Northern Region
Provincial Union Tournament
at Cambridge and, despite
facing some tough competition
from Waikato and Taranaki,
came away with a respectable
quarter finals finish.
‘‘It was a good competition
and we did better than we
expected,’’ Williams said.
‘‘We had only trained
together a few times before the
competition.’’
Williams says she wants to
focus her attention on sevens
rugby.
‘‘I play 15s with Bay of Plenty
but I really enjoy sevens,’’ she
said.
‘‘You just get more space to
run.’’
The U18 team is coached by
King Country Rugby Manager
Josh Standen who was proud of
the girl’s effort.
‘‘They beat out some big
provincial teams that had been
training together for eight
weeks,’’ he said.
‘‘We had only been together
for two.’’
Standen said the training
camp will fit in nicely with Wil-
liams’ goal of becoming a professional sevens player.
‘‘Not only will she get identified by selectors but she will get
to develop her rugby skills to the
next level,’’ he said.
King Country rugby has
noticed an increase in the
number of women picking up
the sport and say they are looking at making more pathways
for women players to enter
rugby.
‘‘Sevens is a very attractive
sport for women entering
rugby,’’ Standen said.
‘‘It feeds off playing touch
and we are looking at making
more opportunities for women
playing rugby.’’
The Team was coached by
Josh Standen.
Sales reduce Taupo debt
MATT SHAND
More than $5.1 million worth of
property has been sold off by the
Taupo District Council since
2015 in a bid to reduce the
town’s debt.
Council
figures
reveal
$5,276,631 worth of property has
been sold, or has gone unconditional, which is more than the
$3.7 million target set by council.
Taupo
mayor
David
Trewavas said council was
capitalising on the buoyant
property market at this time as
people are seeing Taupo as a
great investment.
‘‘It’s really about taking
advantage of the times and the
low interest rates at the
moment,’’ he said.
‘‘People are seeing Taupo as a
long term investment.
‘‘We’ve had some big sales
out by Mitre 10 Mega which has
boosted the numbers.’’
While most of the sales are
from
council
owned
subdivisions, there are a number of big ticket sales on the
books including a $960,000 sale
at 29 Tuwharetoa Street and
$500,000 at 17 Broadlands Road.
Trewavas said all money
from property sales would go
into reducing debt.
With council purchasing
large chunks of land after the
construction of the Eastern
Arterial Route Trewavas said
there was still about $100
million worth of property available to sell.

Hi Lesley. It is certainly
normal to lose some hair daily –
however, there are a number of
reasons why your hair may be
thinning, here are a few:
Iron deficiency anaemia
Being low or deficient in iron
can lead to hair loss. Symptoms of
iron deficiency anaemia can
include fatigue, weakness and
pale skin. You may also notice
headaches, difficulty
concentrating, cold hands and feet
and hair loss. Iron deficiency
essentially sends your body into
survival mode, so your body
channels oxygen to support vital
functions as opposed to what it
deems non vital – like keeping
your hair intact. The best way to
check your iron status is to see
your GP for an iron studies test.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a condition
in which the body lacks sufficient
thyroid hormones; it can result in
a host of symptoms including
unexplained weight gain, fatigue,
constipation, depression and
difficulty concentrating. Hair,
nails and skin may become more
brittle and break more easily, and
hair loss is also common.
Omega 3 fatty acids
In order to have healthy hair
and avoid hair loss, we need to
make sure that we are getting
enough of the right nutrients in
our diets, including omega 3 fatty
acids. Adding more of these fatty
acids to your diet can help to
prevent hair loss and even
encourage hair to grow healthier.
Omega 3 fatty acids have antiinflammatory properties, which
can help to open the hair follicles,
promoting healthy hair growth.
Ask Dr Libby
Email your questions for Dr Libby to
[email protected].
Please note, only a selection of
questions can be answered.
There are a number of reasons why your hair may be thinning, including iron
and vitamin D deficiency.
When the body is not receiving
sufficient nutrients, the hairs that
are lost regularly each day are
less likely to be replaced, and hair
loss is more likely.
Vitamin D
Low Vitamin D levels interfere
with healthy hair follicles
regenerating. Again, this can be
assessed via a blood test.
There can also be physical
reasons such as excessive styling,
straightening and dying, which
can lead to hair loss. Heat and
some chemicals can weaken the
hair, causing it to break and fall
out. If your hair loss is consistent
it’s best to seek individualised
advice from a health professional.
I don’t have time to eat/prepare
good quality meals, what are
your quick fix ideas that are
nutritious for my family and I?
Thank you – Fiona
Hi Fiona. Firstly, I do believe
that in general, we need to
undergo a priority check. While I
appreciate that many of us are
juggling many different things
daily, there is nothing on earth
that replaces the power of a
nourishing diet.
Preparing real food does take
more time, but it is time we have
to allow for in our day. When we
say ‘‘I don’t have time’’ what we
are essentially saying is ‘‘it’s not a
priority for me.’’
How does that make you feel
when you say, preparing a
nourishing dinner is not a
priority for me? The reality is we
cannot compromise our nutrition
and expect to still have fantastic
health.
In saying all of that though,
there are a number of ways you
can add nourishment to your
meals that don’t take much time.
For example, chop up a mixture of
greens, spinach, kale and herbs
and stir them through a stir-fry,
salad, or soup – this is a great way
to add a little nourishment
booster.
Prepare big batches of meals
on the weekend and freeze them
or stick to one-pot/pan meals
packed full of vegetables.
I cannot encourage you enough
to explore how to make having a
nourishing meal a priority for
you. You are worth taking care of!

The strategic card game bridge,
which is usually played by four
players in two competing
partnerships, attracts young and

professionally.
Taupo Bridge Club committee
member Sharon Barton said the
Taupo club has around 200
members who meet four times a
week to test out their skills.
And in order to give people
something interesting to do on cold
weekend Winter afternoons, the
club is planning on holding Sunday
afternoon sessions once a month
for $4.
These will take place on May 22,
June 19, July 17, August 21, and
September 11.
‘‘It is going to be held from 1pm
at the Taupo Bridge Club in Tauhara
Rd which is beautiful because it
looks right over the golf course,’’
she said.
‘‘In Taupo you have lots of
people who don’t necessarily play
at the club but they play socially
and this is a good chance to bring
bridge players in on a Sunday
afternoon to meet other club
members and hear what’s
happening at the club.’’
Barton said the format will be
either teams or pairs depending on
numbers.
‘‘It’s an awesome game and
attracts a range of people, some
because they like strategy and
others for the social side of it,’’ she
said.

Don’t get caught
buying a dud car
KATE SLUKA
Before you hit the car yards, do
the hard yards and understand
your rights and what you should
be checking for. We have five
steps you should work through:
1. General inspection – use our
car inspection checklist available
on the consumer.org.nz website.
The car should be in a well-lit
area, clean and dry, so you don’t
miss defects.
2. Test drive – take it for a drive
for about half an hour and include
some driving at open road speeds,
and some hill work for checking
gears and brakes.
3. Mechanical inspection – if
you pay a specialist inspection
service or your own mechanic,
they’re required under the CGA
to do the job to a reasonable standard. A pre-purchase inspection
will cost up to $120.
Whatever work the dealer
agrees to do, get it in writing
before you sign up or pay anything, even a deposit.
4. Paperwork – there’s a lot of
documentation you shouldn’t
overlook; warrant of fitness, consumer information notice (CIN),
certificate of registration, outstanding debts, sale agreement,
change of ownership. Our
checklist has the details.
5. Finance – dealer finance can
be more expensive than a bank. If
you’re a home owner, you might
want to consider extending your
mortgage. With any loan offer,
check the time to repay, repayment amounts and the total cost of
credit over the term of the loan.
All lenders must provide this
information to you. If the deal is
interest-free, check for extra fees
and that the asking price hasn’t
been inflated.
And if the wheels fall off the
deal and you and the dealer can’t
come to an agreement on how to
fix things, you have the option of
taking a claim to the Motor
Vehicle Disputes Tribunal, or the
regular Disputes Tribunal if you
bought from a private seller.
So, happy motoring.
I’m off to take my mum for a
drive in my – okay, partially her –
new car.

rights and our car buying guide,

exciting business opportunity for
a new owner to take over a highlyregarded accommodation busi-
ness operation in an extremely
popular tourism destination,’’ he
said.
‘‘A new owner could move
straight in and take over an established business, which already
has a recognised leisure clientele
and a high level of repeat business.’’

Get insight into Brando
The Private tape recordings made
by Hollywood icon Marlon
Brando as he mused on
everything from anxiety to
obesity provide a fascinating
insight into the actor in Listen to
Me Marlon, the next Taupo
Cinema Club movie.
Brando, who was born in 1924
and died in 2004, was an
American actor, film director,
and activist and was ranked by
the American Film Institute as
the fourth greatest movie star
among male movie stars whose
screen debuts occurred in or
before 1950.
He is perhaps most
famous for his
Academy Award.
He is perhaps most famous for
his Academy Award winning
performance as Terry Malloy in
the 1954 movie On the Waterfront.
He was also an activist in the
likes of the African-American
Civil Rights Movement.
The Listen to Me Marlon
documentary by Stevan Riley,
which will screen on May 2, also
includes Brando’s opinions of
DARTS
With one round of the Taupo Darts
Association’s Remembrance Cup to play,
Kumaras and surprise package Holy
Smollies vie for honours and will meet in
the final match of the series.
Kumaras look to be the favourites going
into the decider but Holy Smollies will as
usual go into the match full of confidence
and enthusiasm.
Kumaras go into the final round on the
back of a good victory over Misfits
whereas Holy Smollies had a harder
workout against Young Bux.
Neybors sit just two points behind the
leaders but cannot win the competition
due to an early setback in the series,
drawing the first two matches. Their 13-7
win over Turangi Riggers in last week’s
round was full of merit and should see
them in good stead for the next series.
3Johnnys put on their best performance
for quite some time when forcing a draw
against Tradesmen. 3Johnnys had an
opportunity of causing a major upset
when leading 10-9 but succumbed to the
skill of their more experienced opposition.
Riggers remain mid-table after gaining a
good win over Boothill Arrows.
