In Napa Valley, mother nature is once again a super-hero, providing winemakers
lush, beautiful grapes for great wine. In 2009, the start to the vintage was much
less eventful than previous years for little threat of frost—or the lack of water to
combat it if it came. Late spring rains delayed irrigation needs and the warm
spell in June helped curtail excessive canopy development. Though rainfall was
little more than two-thirds of normal for the third year in a row, the timing of
the precipitation was on the vine's side. Couple that with the lack of frost and the
mild, relatively cool growing season, nature worked in unison to give vines and
grapes the best scenario possible.
vinification
At harvest, our winemaker works closely with the harvest crew, walking the
vineyard rows to hand select fruit at the peak of ripeness. In the cellar, quality and
purity are never compromised at the hands of convenience. Newton Unfiltered
Chardonnay is fermented with wild yeast, native to our Carneros vineyards, and
is bottled unfiltered to preserve the natural fruit essence and to foster the wine’s
unique aroma and flavor.
tasting notes
The 2009 vintage opens with honey suckle on the nose, with the richness of a
sauterne. Fruit aromas of fig and melon are followed by more complex notes of
honey and brown sugar. Baking spices with hints of vanilla and almond follow as
caramelized sugar notes add to the voluptuous depth of aromas. On the palate,
grilled pineapple flavors offer fresh acidity while creaminess is balanced. Cream
and brioche linger while the freshness of fruit remains forward. The wine is a
satisfying weight with present oak that is delicately integrated.
food & wine pairing
This complex wine would pair well with Dungeness Crab with sweet corn chowder,
mushroom risotto with fresh parmesan, and lobster in cream sauce over noodles.
service & aging
Newton’s Unfiltered Chardonnay is a distinctive wine best served at a temperature
between 55˚F and 60˚F. This optimal tempering enhances the full sensory
experience of smell, taste and texture. The wine will age well over several years
with notes of honey and almond becoming more pronounced.
