ganizeschoolclubsandsomeofourcommunityclubs.Wewillalsoseetheculmi‐
nationofmanyprojectsas4‐HersexhibitattheKentuckyStateFair.All4‐Hyouth
arerequiredtocompletenewenrollmentformsinordertoremainactivein
the2017programyear.Lookout,holdon,4‐Hin2016isgoingtobeEXCITING!
4‐Histargetedtowardsyouthwhohavereachedtheir9thbirthdaybyJanuary1,
2017,andhavenotpassedtheir18thbirthday.Thereareopportunitiesforyouth

mercialgrowing.Theyarelong‐livedasfruittrees,withfew
pestsordiseases.Theyalsohavealateblossomtime,sofrost
rarelycausesdamageonwell‐chosensites.Blackberriesalso
havealongfruit‐bearinglifeandwillproduceforadecadeor
longerinKentucky.
Blueberriesrequireanacidicsoil,whichmeansyou’llneedto
amendmostKentuckysoilstoproperlysuittheirneeds.They

bestresults.Pruningtechniquevaries,dependingonthetypeof
bramble.
Blueberriesinaclusterdonotripenatthesametime,andonly
fullyripeberriesshouldbepicked.Fruitneedatleastonetotwo
daysafterturningbluetodevelopfull lavorandcanbelefton
thebushforupto10dayswithoutalossinsize.Flavordoesnot
improveoncethefruitispicked;consequently,youshouldleave
blueberriesonthebushforaslongaspossibletodevelopsweet‐
nessand lavor.
Forbestresultsatharvest,pickcarefully,rollingblueberries
fromtheclusterwiththethumbintothepalmofthehand.Han‐
dleaslittleaspossibletoavoidrubbingoffthebloom(thelight
waxy inishontheskin)andreducebruising.Harvestonlywhen

peoplehowtoIDtreespecies,butitalsocanopentheireyestoallthebene its
treesandforestsprovidetohumansandtheenvironment.
Kentuckyishometomorethan100speciesofbroadleaftrees.Broadleaftrees
losetheirleavesinthefallandmakeup95percentofKentuckyforests.Conifers,
or
evergreentrees,compriselessthan5percent.
Collectingleavesbymid‐summerallows4‐H’erstohavematureleavesintheir
collectionwithminimalinsectholes,spotsorbumps.Leavescollectedduringthe
mid‐summermaybeeasiertopress,butthereisanincreasedriskofleafimper‐
fectionsasthesummermarcheson.
Whencollectingleaves,selectasmalltwigontheendofthebranchthatcontains
atleasttwoleaves.Mountthebestone.Makesuretheleafyouselectlooksvery
similartotheotherleavesonthetree,assomeleavescanbemoreabnormal
thanothers.
Straightentheleavesbypressingthembetweentwolayersofnewspaperswith
cardboardontheoutsideofeachpaper.Placeaheavyobject,suchasabrickor
book,ontopoftheleaves.Besuretochangethepaperdailyforatleasttwo
weeks,asitwillabsorbmoisturefromtheleavesthatcouldcausetheleaftoturn
darkorspoil.

Themostimportantthunderstormsafetyprecautionissimplytobeawareofanapproachingthunderstormandmovetoasafeshelter
beforethestormarrivesinyourarea.Ifyouseelightning,hearthunder,observedarkclouds,oryourhairstandsonend,immediately
goinsideasturdy,completelyenclosedbuilding,homeorahard‐topvehiclewithclosedwindows.Avoidpicnicshelters,sportsdug‐
outs,coveredpatios,carportsandopengarages.Smallwooden,vinylormetalshedsprovidelittletonoprotection.
Sincemetalconductslightning,don’ttouchmetalinsideoroutdoors;dropmetalbackpacks;releasegolfclubs,tennisrackets, ishing
gearandtools,andgetoffbicyclesandmotorcycles.
Lightningcanstrikewaterandtravelalongdistanceinit.Sostandinginwater,eveninrubberboots,isn’tsafeduringathunderstorm.
It’salsounsafetogoswimming,wading,snorkelingandscubadivingiflightningispresent.Ifyou’reinasmallboatduringastorm,
crouchinthemiddleandstayawayfrommetalitemsandsurfaces.
Crouchdowninanopen,exposedareaandstayawayfromtallobjects,suchastrees.Remembertostayawayfromclotheslines,fenc‐
es,exposedshedsandotherelevateditemsthatcanconductlightning.
Ifyou’reindoors,rememberlightningcanenterbuildingsasadirectstrike,throughpipesandwiresextendingoutside,orthroughthe
ground.TelephoneuseisaleadingcauseofindoorlightninginjuriesinAmerica,becausethechargescantravelalongwayintele‐
phoneandelectricalwires,especiallyinruralareas.
Windowsanddoorsprovideadirectpathforlightningtoenterabuilding;soavoidthem.Duringathunderstorm,stayawayfrom
laundryappliancesastheyareconnectedtoplumbingandelectricalsystems.Dryerventsofferadirectelectricalpathwayoutdoors.
Onthefarm,ungroundedwirefencescanputlivestockatriskwhenlightningstrikes.Surprisingly,lightningcantravelalmosttwo
milesalonganungroundedfence.AccordingtotheNationalAgSafetyDatabase,youcangroundwoodenorsteelpoststhataresetin
concretebydriving½‐inchor¾inchsteelrodsorpipesnexttofencepostsatleast5feetintotheground,atintervalsofnomorethan
150feetalongthefence.Youshouldsecurelyfastenthegroundingrodssothatallthefencewirescomeintocontactwiththem.You
canalsosubstitutegalvanizedsteelfencepostsforwoodenpostsatintervalsofnomorethan150feet.Youshouldnothowever,
groundelectricfencesinthismanner,becausetheyhaveadirectpathtothegroundintheircircuitry.Moretipsforlightningprotec‐

ESTABLISHING LATE-SUMMER FORAGES
TheperiodfromlatesummerintoearlyfallinKentuckyisthebesttimetoestablishthecommoncool‐seasongrassessuch
asorchardgrass,tallfescue,timothyandbluegrassforpastureorhay.Thesefourgrassesmakeup95percentofpasture
acreage.
Manyyearsofresearchhaveshownthistimeframeisthebestopportunityforsuccessfulestablishment.MotherNature
hasahandinthisbecauseseedproducedinlatespringremainsdormantuntillatesummerandthenearlyfallrainfallpro‐
videsthemoisturenecessaryfortheseedtogerminate.
Toincreaseyoursuccessrate,rememberthesefourpoints:
First,addresssoilfertilityneeds.Takesoilsamplesnowtodeterminefertilityneedsandtogiveyouenoughtimetosupply
theneedednutrients.Inadequatelevelsofphosphorous,potassiumorlimestonecanlimitthesuccessoflate‐summer
seedings.Forpuregrassstands,applynitrogenattherateof40to60poundsperacre.
Second,controlcompetition.Late‐summerseedingsmostoftenfailfromcompetitionandlackofwater.Whenyoucontrol
existingvegetationwithherbicidesortillage,theemergingseedlingswillhaveaccesstowhateverwaterandnutrientsare
presentwithouthavingtocompetewithweeds.
Tomaximizethesuccessofseedings,useaburn‐downherbicidetokillannualweeds.Translocatedherbicidescanbeused
wherelabeledtokillorsuppressperennialssuchasjohnsongrass.
Remembertowaittwotothreeweeksaftersprayingtranslocatedherbicidesbeforeyouplantinno‐tillsituations.Thiswill
allowtimeforkilledweedstodryoutandforresidualeffectsoftheherbicidetodecay.
Third,selecthighqualityseedofanadaptedvariety.Plantinghighqualityseedisanessentialsteptowardestablishment
andlongevityofapasture.Theseseedshavehighpercentagesofgermination,lowpercentagesofweedseedandfreedom
fromnoxiousweedseed.
Certi iedseedmeetsorexceedsminimumstandardsforpurity,germinationandquality.Thecerti iedseedshouldbefrom
an“improved”varietyadaptedtoyourfarm.“Improved”meansthevarietyhasbeenselectedforimprovedyield,quality,
persistence,diseaseresistanceorotherpositivetraits.
Varietiesgreatlydifferinyield,persistence,diseaseresistanceandcost.Expensivevarietiesaren’tnecessarilygood,and
thecheaperonesaren’tnecessarilybad.
