Sincemetalconductslightning,don’ttouchmetalinsideoroutdoors;dropmetalbackpacks;releasegolfclubs,tennisrackets, ishing gearandtools,andgetoffbicyclesandmotorcycles. Lightningcanstrikewaterandtravelalongdistanceinit.Sostandinginwater,eveninrubberboots,isn’tsafeduringathunderstorm. It’salsounsafetogoswimming,wading,snorkelingandscubadivingiflightningispresent.Ifyou’reinasmallboatduringastorm, crouchinthemiddleandstayawayfrommetalitemsandsurfaces. Crouchdowninanopen,exposedareaandstayawayfromtallobjects,suchastrees.Remembertostayawayfromclotheslines,fenc‐ es,exposedshedsandotherelevateditemsthatcanconductlightning. Ifyou’reindoors,rememberlightningcanenterbuildingsasadirectstrike,throughpipesandwiresextendingoutside,orthroughthe ground.TelephoneuseisaleadingcauseofindoorlightninginjuriesinAmerica,becausethechargescantravelalongwayintele‐ phoneandelectricalwires,especiallyinruralareas. Windowsanddoorsprovideadirectpathforlightningtoenterabuilding;soavoidthem.Duringathunderstorm,stayawayfrom laundryappliancesastheyareconnectedtoplumbingandelectricalsystems.Dryerventsofferadirectelectricalpathwayoutdoors. Manyyearsofresearchhaveshownthistimeframeisthebestopportunityforsuccessfulestablishment.MotherNature hasahandinthisbecauseseedproducedinlatespringremainsdormantuntillatesummerandthenearlyfallrainfallpro‐ videsthemoisturenecessaryfortheseedtogerminate. Toincreaseyoursuccessrate,rememberthesefourpoints: First,addresssoilfertilityneeds.Takesoilsamplesnowtodeterminefertilityneedsandtogiveyouenoughtimetosupply theneedednutrients.Inadequatelevelsofphosphorous,potassiumorlimestonecanlimitthesuccessoflate‐summer seedings.Forpuregrassstands,applynitrogenattherateof40to60poundsperacre. Second,controlcompetition.Late‐summerseedingsmostoftenfailfromcompetitionandlackofwater.Whenyoucontrol existingvegetationwithherbicidesortillage,theemergingseedlingswillhaveaccesstowhateverwaterandnutrientsare presentwithouthavingtocompetewithweeds.
