The #20 HSE Royals traveled to Zionsville last night to open up their season against the #24 Zionsville
Eagles. The Royals were looking to prove that they were deserving of their top-20 preseason ranking
and start the season off with a big conference win. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen as the Royals
came up short, losing 1-4 to the Eagles. Despite the big loss, 3 out of the 4 matches we lost were
extremely close matches, but we just couldn’t quite get over the hump. We came out playing great
as we got up early in 4 out of 5 sets. However, we showed some first-match jitters as we struggled to
close out the all-important first sets tonight, and we were only able to win one first set. But I have to
give credit to the girls as they continued to battle and made things interesting, making Zionsville work
for everything. Our lone win came at #2 doubles where senior Nicole Delozier and junior Maria del
Mar Davila had a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory to get their first career varsity win. Congratulations, ladies!
Senior Kelsey Hay also had a very impressive effort as she lost 7-5, 7-5 in her first match at #1 singles.
Despite the loss, Kelsey made a statement tonight by proving she can compete with one of the best
players in the conference. While it wasn’t the ideal way to start the season, I’m still proud of the
effort we gave tonight, and this match will help show us what we need to work on so that we can
reverse this result by the time the conference tourney comes around. The Royals will look to bounce
back Saturday morning as they host the #4 Cathedral Irish at 10:00 AM.
The JV team had a very impressive 10-3 victory over the Eagles tonight. Special congratulations to
the following freshmen for picking up their first high school tennis career wins tonight: Tory Ochs,
Julia Kim, Katie Noble, Remi Musselman, Claire Haxton, Alicia Verde, Grace Dziennik, and Madeline
Lonis. Hopefully it will be the first of many more to come!! Great job tonight, JV!!!

The #20 HSE Lady Royals lost 2-3 to the 4th-ranked Cathedral Irish on a beautiful Saturday morning
for tennis. The Royals got early leads in 3 out of the 5 matches, but were unable to hang on as
Cathedral elevated their play. Wins came at #2 singles as junior Nicole Spafford played a terrific
match, winning 6-0, 6-1. At #2 doubles, Maria del Mar Davila and Nicole Delozier pulled out two
close sets to win and improve their record to 2-0 on the year, wining 6-4, 7-5. After being down 4-5
in the 2nd set, they stepped up and won three straight games to win the match. It was another tough
match, but a match that will make us better in the long run. We were very close to beating a top-5
team in the state! The Royals fall to 0-2 on the year and will host #2 North Central on Monday.
The JV team had another impressive victory, winning 11-3! Freshman Tory Ochs had a dominant
performance at the #1 singles spot, winning 8-0. Kushboo Chougule and Julia Kim picked up the other
singles victories. Congratulations to freshmen Kimberly Rutsito, Erika Myrvold, Hannah Wallen, and
Nia Simmons for picking up the first wins of their high school careers! Kimberly and Erika were the
last match to finish, and they won in a dramatic tiebreaker. It was a very exciting way to end the day!
They definitely earned the victory tunnel!!  The JV improves to 2-0 on the year. Keep up the good
work!!

The #20 HSE Lady Royals lost 0-5 to the 2nd-ranked North Central Panthers. The Royals put up a
valiant effort, but just couldn’t withstand North Central’s firepower. At #3 singles, Nicole Spafford
was the only position to win a set as she pulled out the 2nd set in a tiebreaker. Nicole fought very
hard and played a great match, but she just couldn’t get over the hump in the third, losing 6-1, 6-7
(4), 6-4. Great effort, Nicole! Andrea Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer lost two very close sets at #1
doubles (7-5, 6-4). Despite the loss, the Royals should gain some confidence in knowing that they can
compete with any team in the state. This is a match that will definitely help us get better! The Royals
drop to 0-3 on the year and will look to get on track tonight as they host Noblesville.
The JV team had a tough loss, losing 7-6, as they were the victim of some tough playback match-ups.
However, they played very well overall and had some very good wins. The JV team drops to 2-1 on
the year.

After three tough matches to start off the season, the Lady Royals were FIRED UP to get their first
win, and they came out playing like it from the get-go. We got a big conference win last night,
defeating Noblesville 4-1. All three singles players played great and won in straight sets. At #1
singles, Kelsey Hay won a tough first-set tiebreaker and then took the momentum with her into the
second set and never looked back, winning the match 7-6 (4), 6-1. At #2 singles, Megan Warren
played a terrific match and didn’t drop a game, winning 6-0, 6-0. Very impressive, Megan! Nicole
Spafford continues to play very well. She won the first five games in both sets, winning the match 62, 6-2. The #2 doubles team of Maria del Mar and Nicole Delozier won two close sets, including a
gritty second-set tiebreaker, winning 6-4, 7-6 (2). Those two have really showed how mentally tough
they are by continuing to pull out close sets. At #1 doubles, Andrea Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer lost
a heartbreaker in a third-set tiebreaker. After dropping the first set 6-2, they showed great resilience
by battling back and winning a 2nd-set tiebreaker. They continued to play great in the 3rd set, and
had multiple match points, but Noblesville just kept coming up with big shots when it mattered most.
The girls fought hard and played really well, but just came up a little short, losing 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7).
It was a great match to watch as both teams were playing some really good doubles! It was a tough
way to end the night, but overall it was a great match for the Royals as we got our first win of the
season. The first domino has fallen! Let’s keep it rollin’!! The Royals improve to 1-3 on the year and
will be back in action Thursday night as they travel to Brownsburg for another HCC showdown.
The JV team had a dominating performance as they won every single match. WOW!!! Great job,
ladies!! This shows how deep our team truly is. The JV improves to 3-1 on the year.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning for tennis, and the Royals hosted McCutcheon in the first of two
matches. Well, there’s not much to say about this one. Our girls came out and took care of business,
as they quickly won all 5 matches in straight sets and only gave up 2 games total. Very impressive!!
This was a nice confidence booster and a good warm-up match for the afternoon, which we knew
would be a much tougher match. Congratulations to Andrea Updike as she picked up her first varsity
win of her career as she and Kelsey Cahlamer got their first win at #1 doubles. The Royals improve to
3-3 on the year and 3-1 in the HCC. It was a great way to start out the day.
The JV once again had a perfect match as they won every single match and only dropped 1 game.
Wow! Very impressive!!! Unfortunately, McCutcheon only had 6 JV players, so only 12 of our JV
players were able to play.  However, we were able to play some HSE v. HSE exhibition matches
that added some excitement to the match. The JV improves to 4-2 on the year. Great playing!!

Wow!!! What a match!! The Royals pulled out an extremely close match, winning 3-2 after three
matches went to 3 sets! I don’t think I’ve ever seen 3 matches go to three sets before. That was
crazy. The #2 doubles team of Nicole Delozier and Maria del Mar got things started for the Royals as
they had another impressive victory, winning 6-4, 6-1. They improve to 5-1 on the year. Harrison
evened things up after we dropped at #3 singles. Then, Harrison took a lead after our #1 doubles
team lost in 3 sets. Despite the loss, they should be proud of how they played in the first set. It was
the best set they played all year! Let’s build on that! So with two matches left on the court, we had
to win both of them to win the match. Both matches were in the third set. Luckily, we had two
seniors who were up for the challenge. First was Megan Warren at #2 singles. After a great first set,
she struggled a little in the 2nd and dropped it. In the third set, she faced some outside distractions,
but she was able to maintain her composure and stay focused to win the third set 6-4 to keep the
Royals’ hope alive! Great match, Megan! So with the match score tied 2-2, all eyes were on Kelsey
Hay at #1 singles. Kelsey was once again in a tough battle at #1 singles against a very good player.
Kelsey lost the first set in a tiebreaker but was able to rebound to win the 2nd set to force a 3rd.
After losing the first 2 games of the third set, she really stepped up her game and won 6 of the next 7
games to win the third set 6-3 and clinch the match for the Royals! That’s what I call clutch! I was
really proud of the way both Megan and Kelsey were able to step up under pressure when the team
needed them. That’s not an easy situation to be in, and their senior experience and mental
toughness really shined through today. It was a great team win and a great way to end the day! The
Royals improve to 4-3 on the year and 4-1 in the HCC. The Royals have another busy week coming up
(weather permitting) and it starts off with a home match against Avon on Monday.
The JV team had a big win as they defeated Harrison 11-3. Tory Ochs got two wins without dropping
a game. And the doubles team of Summer Pratt and Rebeka Man remain undefeated. Great playing,
girls! The JV improves to 5-2 on the year.
The girls had
fun with Callie

The Lady Royals (ranked #21) got another big HCC victory Thursday night, defeating the Brownsburg Bulldogs
4-1. Nicole Spafford got the ball rolling for the Royals with another impressive performance at #3 singles,
winning 6-1, 6-1. Next was the #2 doubles as the combination of Nicole Delozier and Devin Krauter (filling in
for an injured Maria del Mar Davila) who cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. It was a very impressive match,
especially considering they rarely play together. Congratulations to Devin Krauter for picking up her first
varsity win of her career! Next off was the #1 doubles team of Andrea Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer, who had
another tough match. They played well, but just couldn't capitalize on big points and made a few too many
mistakes, losing 6-2, 6-2. I know they're frustrated with their results, but they are very close to being a very
good doubles team. The tools are there, we just have to keep working on the chemistry. Let’s keep working
hard! The next point came from Megan Warren at #2 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1. Megan played a great match
from start to finish. This sealed the match for the Royals! But Kelsey Hay was still had work to do at #1 singles.
For the second match in a row, she battled her way to a first-set tiebreaker victory and then elevated her game
in the second set, winning 7-6, 6-3. Great win, Kelsey! With their second-straight HCC win, the Royals improve
to 2-3 on the year. They will host McCutcheon and Harrison this Saturday. Great match, ladies!!!
The JV team had a tough loss, losing 7-6. All four singles players (Tory, Khushboo, Julia, and Grace)
got victories as well as the doubles teams of Rebeka Man and Summer Pratt and Remi Musselman
and Claire Haxton. Unfortunately, we only won 2 out of 9 doubles matches. The JV drops to 3-2 on
the year.

The Royals continued their hot streak tonight with a big 5-0 victory over Avon. All five matches were
won in straight sets!! It was another windy, rainy evening, but we were able to play great tennis
despite the conditions. Megan Warren got things started off with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles. Megan
did a great job of limiting her errors and constructing really nice points. Megan improves to 6-2 on
the year with the win. Next came Nicole Spafford at #3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-4. Nicole played a very
consistent match, making her opponent work for everything. Nicole improves to 6-3 on the year with
the win. After a brief rain delay, Kelsey Hay finished up her match at #1 singles, winning 6-2, 7-5.
After a terrific first set, her opponent started getting hot in the second, and I was proud of the way
Kelsey weathered the storm and battled back to win the set. Great match, Kelsey! Kelsey improves
to 6-3 at #1 singles for the season. At #1 doubles, the team of Kelsey Cahlamer and Andrea Updike
got a big win tonight. They won a really close first set in a tiebreaker and then took the momentum
and ran with it, winning 6-2 in the 2nd set. I’m telling you, this team is getting better and better
every match! They improve to 3-6 on the season. The final match to finish was #2 doubles. After
winning the first set 6-3, Maria del Mar Davila and Nicole Delozier found themselves down 1-4 in the
2nd. However, they were able to elevate their play and battle back to win 6 of the next 7 games to
take the match. They improve to 7-1 on the year and remain undefeated in the conference. This was
a big conference win for us tonight, and it will send a message to the other teams in the HCC that we
will be a force to be reckoned with when the conference tourney comes around! Let’s keep working
hard and keep our eye on the prize! Great match tonight, ladies!! The Royals improve to 7-2 on the
year and 5-1 in the HCC. We will be back in action tomorrow night as we host Westfield.
The JV team continues to play very well, winning a close one, with match score of 7-6. Devin Krauter,
Tory Ochs, and Khushboo Chougule got singles victories while the teams of Alicia Verde and Katie
Noble, Remi Musselman and Claire Haxton, Katie Rosner and Grace Dziennik, and Katie Meyers and
Kayal Ritzenthaler got doubles wins. The JV improves to 7-2 on the year and 5-1 in the HCC.

The 21st-ranked HSE Royals traveled to Mt. Vernon Tuesday and it was a crazy-windy night for tennis
with on-and-off drizzling throughout the match. Luckily, the Royals were able to withstand the
elements and get the 5-0 victory over the Marauders. Kelsey Hay got things started with a 6-0,6-0
win at #1 singles. Kelsey improves to 5-3 on the year. Next was Nicole Spafford who won 6-2, 6-0.
Nicole improves to 5-3 on the year. Senior captain Megan Warren was the 3rd point for the Royals,
which clinched the match. She won 6-3, 6-1 and improves to 5-2 on the year. The doubles teams
finished things off. At #1 doubles, Andrea Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer were able to pull out a close
first set 6-4, then carried that momentum into the 2nd set, winning 6-1. They improve to 2-6 on the
season. Finally, #2 doubles rounded out the evening with an exciting finish to the 2nd set. After a 6-3
first-set victory, they got off to a slow start in the 2nd and ended up getting down 5-2. With their
backs against the wall, they ended up winning 4 straight games and eventually got into a 2nd-set
tiebreaker. They were up math-point in the tiebreaker when the rain really started coming down. It
was a crazy point, but they were able to win the point and the match…and then we all quickly got on
the bus to get out of the crazy weather! It definitely wasn’t ideal tennis conditions, but I was proud
of the way our girls dealt with the weather and still played solid tennis. They didn’t make excuses,
they just took care of business. The Royals improve to 5-3 on the year and have two big conference
matches coming up against Avon and Westfield. They will host Avon tomorrow, which is a make-up
match from Monday.
The JV team defeated Mt. Vernon 11-1. We won all 4 singles matches and won 7 out of 8 doubles
matches, with one playback match ending in a tie before we had to call it quits because of the rain.
Julia Kim and the team of Grace Dziennik and Katie Rosner got the 8-0 victories. The JV improves to
6-2 on the year. Great match, girls!

The Royals placed 3rd out of 8 teams in the Delta Invitational on Saturday, going 2-1 on the day. We
started out with a 5-0 win over Delta’s second team. All positions won in straight sets. It was a good
start to the day. Next, we played Delta’s 13th-ranked varsity team. After Nicole Spafford won at #3
singles and Maria del Mar and Nicole Delozier won at #1 doubles, things were looking good.
However, Kelsey Hay and Megan Warren both fought hard and played great matches, but ended up
losing in 3rd-set super tiebreakers at #1 and #2 singles, respectively. After dropping at #2 doubles,
we ended up losing the match 2-3. It was a heartbreaking loss, but our girls were mentally tough
enough to bounce back with a big 3-2 win over #14 Ft. Wayne Carroll. Wins came from Megan
Warren at #2 singles, Nicole Spafford at #3 singles, and Andrea Updike and Devin Krauter at #2
doubles. This is a big win for us that shows we are a Top 20 team. While it would have been nice to
beat Delta, the 3rd place finish is a very good result for us. Congratulations to Nicole Spafford for
going 3-0 on Saturday. She really showed her toughness by winning 4 close sets. The Royals improve
to 9-4 after the tournament and will be back in action Monday night as they travel to Lafayette Jeff.

The Royals’ tennis team defeated Lawrence North with a score of 4-1. The #1 doubles team of Andrea
Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer got things rolling with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory at #1 doubles. Next
came the #2 doubles team of Nicole Delozier and Maria del Mar Davila, winning 6-4, 6-1. After a close
first set, they really stepped up and played a great 2nd set. The third and deciding point for the Royals
was senior captain Megan Warren at #1 singles. Megan played a great match and won 6-4, 6-2. Both #2
and #3 singles went to a third set. At #3 singles, Devin Krauter played a great firs set, but then her
opponent really stepped up. Devin fought hard, but lost the match 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. At #2 singles, Nicole
Spafford won a close first set, then had a letdown in the second, but once again stepped up in the third
set, winning the match 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The Royals improve to 11-4 on the year and will be back in action on
Thursday as they host Fishers in the Mudsock and “Smash Cancer” match. It should be a great match, so
come out and support your Royals’ tennis team! And don’t forget to wear your “SMASH CANCER” shirts!!
The JV team had another perfect match, winning all 13 matches. Niiiiiiice! Congrats to Tory Ochs,
Remi Musselman & Claire Haxton, Erika Myrvold & Kat Henkel, and Sophia Dovin & Kat Henkel (again)
for winning their matches without dropping a game! The JV team improves to 10-2 on the year.

The HSE Lady Royals brought home the Mudsock trophy last night, defeating Fishers 3-2. It was a great match
that came down to the wire! Nicole Spafford got the first point for the Royals by winning 6-3, 6-1 at #3
singles. She played an excellent match and beat a very solid opponent. Next was the team of Nicole Delozier
and Maria del Mar Davila at #2 doubles. After winning the first set 6-2, they dug themselves a hole in the
second set, getting down 1-4. But then they stepped up their intensity and rattled off 5 straight games to win
the match. Just as they've done all year, they came through when they needed to get the win. With the
Royals up 2-1, the remaining two matches went into third sets. At #1 doubles, Andrea Updike and Kelsey
Cahlamer got down early in the set, but battled back to tie it at 5-5. They fought off 7 match points, but
eventually ran out of steam and dropped the 3rd set 7-5. So with the match score 2-2, all eyes were on senior
Kelsey Hay at #1 singles for the deciding match. It was a back-and-forth third set and Kelsey found herself
down 3-4. However, she once again showed her toughness by stepping up in the clutch and winning 3 straight
games to win her match and the Mudsock trophy for the Royals! Whew! It was an intense match that couldn't
have been any closer. Both teams played great matches. With the win, the Royals improve to 8-1 in the HCC
and 12-4 overall. Special thanks to all those who came out to support the Royals and bought "Smash Cancer"
shirts. It was a great crowd and a great night for HSE tennis!
The JV team had another big win, defeating the Tigers 12-1. Singles victories came from Devin
Krauter, Tory Ochs, and Khushboo Chougule. Khushboo improves to a perfect 13-0 for the season!!
Congrats to Katie Rosner & Demi Vigren for winning 8-0! The JV team improves to 11-2 on the year.

The 20th-ranked HSE Lady Royals lost 3-2 last night to #9 Guerin Catholic on Senor Night. It was a hardfought match, but the Royals just couldn't come up with a 3rd point. Things were looking good early as
we were up in 3 matches in the first set. At #3 singles, Nicole Spafford picked up the first point by
winning in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-0. Nicole improves to 13-4 on the year. Next was senior Kelsey Hay
who got our 2nd point by coming up with a big win on Senior Night. Kelsey won convincingly, 6-1, 6-4 as
she improves to 10-5 on the year. After dropping #2 singles and #1 doubles, the deciding match was #2
doubles. After getting up 5-1 in the first set, Nicole Delozier and Maria del Mar hit a rut and couldn’t
close out the first set as Guerin elevated their play and took the first set 7-5. They took the momentum
and ran with it, winning the second set 6-2. It was a disappointing way to end the match, but it was still a
good result against a top-ten team. Special thanks to seniors Nicole Delozier, Kelsey Hay, Andrea Updike,
and Megan Warren. You are a great group of seniors! Also, a BIG thanks to Maria del Mar and her family
as they did a great job with the Senior Night festivities! The Royals drop to 12-5 on the year and will be
back in action Wednesday as they travel to Carmel to take on the #1-ranked Greyhounds.
The JV tennis team defeated Guerin with a score of 9-4. Tory Ochs and Devin Krauter both had nice
come-from-behind singles victories. The doubles teams also dominated as we won the first 7 doubles
matches! Nice work, girls! The JV team improves to 12-2 on the year.

The Lady Royals placed 4th at Saturday’s Hoosier Crossroads Conference Tournament,
finishing behind Zionsville, Fishers, and Harrison. Overall, it was a disappointing result as our
goal was to bring home the championship. We played well, but we lost some critical matches
that took us out of contention for the title. We had a pretty good start to the day as we won 4
out of 5 first round matches, but then only won 1 second round match which really hurt our
chances to win. Kelsey Hay placed 4th at #1 singles, Megan Warren placed 2nd at #2 singles,
and Nicole Spafford placed 4th at #3 singles. All three girls had good wins in the first round.
Megan had a great win in the 2nd round against a Zionsville player who beat her earlier in the
year. Kelsey and Megan both made the All-Conference team. The #1 doubles team of Andrea
Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer placed 3rd and made the All-Conference team, which was a great
result! The had a big “upset” win over Noblesville in the first round. The #2 doubles team of
Maria del Mar Davila and Nicole Delozier lost a tough first match, but then bounced back to win
their next two and get 5th place. The Royals will look to bounce back tonight as they host
Pendleton in their final regular season match. Sectional play will begin on Wednesday.

The 21st-ranked Royals defeated the 28th-ranked Arabians with a match score of 3-2. With our normal #1
singles and #3 singles out due to illness, it was nice to see the rest of the team step up against a good team to
get the 3 points for the win. Andrea Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer were first off the court at #1 doubles,
winning 6-1, 6-1. They have won 3 out of their last 4 matches and are really playing well. They improve to 99 together this year. Next came the #2 doubles team of Nicole Delozier and Maria del Mar Davila, winning 63, 6-1. They are officially back on track now that they’ve won their last 3 matches convincingly. They
improve to 16-4 together on the year. Devin filled in for Kelsey tonight at #1 singles and played a really good
first set and was up 4-3. Unfortunately, she just couldn’t finish off the set, and her opponent elevated her
play. Devin lost 6-4, 6-1, but gave a great effort. Devin finishes with a 4-4 record on varsity this year. It’s
been great to have a player of her caliber filling in for us on varsity when we need her. Tory Ochs subbed in
for Nicole at 3 singles and played a tough opponent who had a great forehand and knew how to finish at the
net. Tory made her work for everything and gave a good fight, but she lost 6-4, 6-2. Despite the loss, I’m
really glad that Tory got to play in a varsity match this year as she’s had a very impressive year on JV. The
final point came from senior captain Megan Warren, who came up with yet another clutch performance and
pulled out a 3rd set win to clinch the match for the Royals, winning 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. What a match! This was a
big win for Megan and a great way to follow up her stellar play at the conference tourney. Megan improves
her regular season record to 14-6. Great match, ladies!
Overall, it was a really good regular season for us. We end the regular season with a 13-5 record. After an 0-3
start, that means we won 13 of our last 15 matches! Now that the regular season is over, it’s time to start
focusing on the postseason. We begin sectional play on Wednesday as we travel to Noblesville to take on the
Millers in the first round. We beat Noblesville 4-1 the first time around, but they have a different line-up, and
there’s not bigger motivator than losing, so we have to come ready for the Millers! Let’s GO!!!!
The JV finished up their season with another big win over Pendleton, winning 10-2. Khushboo, Julia Kim,
and Katie Noble got the singles victories. Alicia and Grace got the big 8-0 win in doubles. The JV finishes
their season with a very impressive 13-2 record. This definitely shows how deep of a team we are! While
no one went undefeated for the season, we did have several players with only one win, and they were:
Khushboo Chougule (14-1), Tory Ochs (14-1), Julia Kim (15-1), Grace Dziennik (15-1), Rebeka Man (14-1),
Summer Pratt (14-1), Kayla Ritzenthaler (14-1), Katie Meyers (13-1), Katie Rosner (12-1), and Kat Henkel
(7-1). Congratulations on a GREAT season, JV players!!!! Keep working hard in the offseason! We have a
lot of potential on this JV team!

The Lady Royals got off to a good start to the postseason by defeating Noblesville 3-2. All three wins
came from the singles positions and were in straight sets. Megan Warren was first off with a very
impressive 6-1, 6-1 win. After the first few games, I thought she was going to have a long match ahead of
her, but then she just found her groove and started rattling off games. Next was Nicole Spafford at #3
singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. I was a little nervous about Nicole after missing Monday’s match, but she came
out and didn’t miss a beat and played a great match. The third and deciding point came from senior
Kelsey Hay at the #1 singles position. She still isn’t feeling 100%, but she is a tough player and she
showed that tonight by stepping up and taking care of business, winning 6-2, 6-3. Unfortunately, we
couldn’t get the 5-0 win as both doubles teams got beat. At #1 doubles, Kelsey and Andrea just never
really got going and played a little too passively when they had a chance to make a move in the first set.
They lost 6-4, 6-2. At #2 doubles, Maria del Mar and Nicole had a great first set, but then had a letdown
in the second. Despite having two match points when they were up 5-4, they were unable close out the
match, and eventually lost the second set. Since the match was already decided, we played a super
tiebreaker for the third set, and we ended up losing 10-5 in the breaker. It was a disappointing way to
end the match, but the bottom line is that we got the 3 points we need to move on! Postseason play is all
about surviving and advancing, and we did that tonight. And I have a feeling that the doubles teams will
get redemption tomorrow night! The Royals will move on to the sectional final where they will play
Fishers. The match will be at Noblesville and is scheduled for 5:00. Come out and support your Royals as
it should be a GREAT match!!!!

The Lady Royals made history Friday night by becoming the first HSE girls’ tennis team to win a sectional
championship as they defeated Fishers 3-2. As expected, it was an epic match that came down to the
wire! The Royals struck first as the #2 doubles team of Maria del Mar Davila and Nicole Delozier got the
first point for the Royals, winning 6-0, 6-3. I know these girls were motivated after losing the night before
to Noblesville, and they sure played like it! Fishers then struck back by getting wins at the #2 and #1
singles positions. It wasn’t looking for the Royals, needing to win both matches left on the court. At #1
doubles, Andrea Updike and Kelsey Cahlamer lost a close first set, 6-4. However, they elevated their
intensity level and aggressiveness and were able to win the second set 6-1. Meanwhile, at #3 singles,
Nicole Spafford won the first set 6-2, but then dropped the second set 6-2. So with both matches going to
third sets, the Royals had to win both of them to win the sectional title. At #1 doubles, Andrea and Kelsey
got off to a slow start, getting down 3-4. But they regained the match momentum by winning the next 2
games, getting up 5-4. In the next game, they had 2 match points, but were unable to capitalize, dropping
the game and going to 5-5 in the third. This is when they really stepped up in the clutch, winning the next
2 games and winning the match 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. I was so impressed how they came through when the
pressure was on to close out the match! What a huge win for them! And speaking of stepping up with
the pressure on, Nicole Spafford did just that to win the match for the Royals. In the third set, Nicole got
up 4-1, but her opponent kept fighting, battling back to 5-4. At this time, the #1 doubles match ended, so
all eyes were on Nicole at #3 singles and the sectional title depended on her. With both players being
extremely consistent given the situation, the girls played some very long points, and it seemed like the
entire crowd was holding its collective breath on every point. Fortunately, Nicole was able to outlast her
opponent and was able to win the 3rd set 6-4, which clinched the match for the Royals and the sectional
championship!!! Whew!!!! What a match!!!! I was so proud of how the girls stepped up when they
needed to tonight. It is so exciting to be a part of school history by winning the first sectional title in
school history. Hopefully this will be the first of many to come! I’m so proud of the girls. They definitely
rose to the occasion! And a big thanks to all those who came out and supported us tonight! With the
win, the girls will advance to the North Central regional, where they will play #2 North Central on Tuesday
at 4:30. GREAT match, ladies!!!

The Royals’ tennis season came to an end Tuesday night as we lost 0-5 to #2 North Central, losing all 5
matches in straight sets. We fought hard and had some very close doubles matches (6-4, 7-5 in both
matches), but just couldn’t get over the hump against a very strong North Central squad. I was proud of
the way our girls competed and how we made North Central work for everything. Unfortunately, the
upset just wasn’t meant to be tonight. We end our season with a 15-6 record and ranked #21 in the
state. Overall, it was a great season, and I am really proud of this group of girls and what we were able to
accomplish, especially winning the school’s first ever girls’ tennis sectional championship! Thanks to
everyone for their hard work all season! It is amazing what you can accomplish by working hard and
believing in yourselves. We will especially miss this group of senior girls (Nicole Delozier, Kelsey Hay,
Andrea Updike, and Megan Warren) as they were great senior leaders for us. Returning players, let’s
build on this success and have it motivate us to work even harder to get back to this place next year!
Great season, ladies! Go Royals!!! Or in the words of Rodrigo Davila: LET’S GO BLUE, WE LOVE YOU! ♥
