Varsity: The Royals defeated Fishers 3-2 to retain the Mudsock trophy for the 8th consecutive year. As
expected, it was a very close match that came down to the wire. Fishers struck first with a win at #2 singles,
but the Royals responded with a big 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 doubles by sophomores Andrew Myers and Mark
Slaninka. Next was Mark Skelton at #3 singles, who won in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) against a very good
freshman. Mark played very well, and it was great to see him rebound with a big win tonight after Zionsville.
Fittingly, the match clincher came from to the #1 doubles team of senior captains Nick Krauter and Josh
DeFonce. It was a gritty performance as Josh battled through a painful tennis elbow. The seniors were down
early in both sets, but found a way to battle back and win in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. Nick served a great game to
close out the match and secure the Mudsock for the Royals. It was a memorable and fitting way to end their
final Mudsock match. At #1 singles, Alec Gretencord played very well and had chances, but just couldn’t get
over the hump against a tough player. He lost in two close sets, 5-7, 4-6. Overall, I was really proud of the way
our guys stepped up tonight and got the job done. We knew it was going to be a close one. It was a big crowd
and a great atmosphere, and I’m glad that our guys rose to the occasion and found a way to get 3 points. This
should definitely give us some confidence going in to the Shirley this weekend. The Royals improve to 3-2 on
the year and 2-1 in the HCC. Great match, guys! Thanks for everyone who came out to support the Royals!
There was a lot of blue in the stands! Shoutout to the girls’ tennis team for coming out to support the guys!
They’ll pay you back in the spring. ☺
JV: Today we faced our cross town rivals and showed them what a team and talented team we have. Varsity
got the win and JV put the topping on that mudsock victory by dominating Fishers. I really like how the team
bounced back after a loss and is starting to gel. Let’s keep the momentum going.
