Now, our region’s community foundation manages more than $1 billion in assets—almost all of which are advised by people who are working in their own unique ways to make Kansas City a better place to live. In fact, since 1978 the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation and its donors have given more than $1 billion in grants. The following pages are a testimony to each donor’s commitment to making a difference in our community in a way that is important to him or her. If you would like to be a part of our family of giving, visit us at www.gkccf.org. Letter from the president & ceo Thank you for being part of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation! 2006 was a year of several new additions in our work to fulfill community dreams through the power of giving. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in our region. This is the community’s foundation—your foundation—and the board and staff are committed to promoting equity and inclusion throughout the Kansas City region. As part of that commitment, in 2006 the Hispanic Development Fund joined the ranks of the Community Foundation’s affiliates, which include the Community Foundation of Johnson County, the Community Foundation of Wyandotte County, the Northland Community Foundation and the Eastland Community Foundation. In 2006, 129 new donors established funds at the Community Foundation and its affiliates. Thanks to a new minimum fee, allowing a donor to open a fund for a fee of as little as $21 per month, it is easier than ever to make a difference in the charitable causes that are important to you. We are committed to increasing charitable giving in our community, offering innovative giving vehicles and reaching out to a diverse audience of potential donors of all ages and races and across our entire region. In 2006 we introduced the “Check Mark” to enhance donors’ usage of the DonorEdge® resource, where 650 community organizations are profiled to encourage smart investments in Kansas City’s nonprofit sector. Last year nearly 3,500 different organizations in Kansas City and across the country received grants from the 1,901 funds under the Community Foundation’s umbrella! DonorEdge® is one of the many ways we connect donors to the community needs they care about, providing high quality information—unavailable anywhere else—about effective programs and organizational capacity. This is the community’s foundation. This is your foundation. Laura and Eva, a 2006 addition to the family Finally, as you will note from the stories in this report, in 2006 we added an emphasis on better assisting our donors who establish scholarship funds. We work with a wide range of donors interested in education to develop effective application and award procedures, giving our community’s young people the opportunity to be the best they can be. That is the spirit of our leadership initiative set forth in the “Time to Get It Right” report, which continues to serve as a roadmap for our region’s future. The Community Foundation offers unparalleled expertise and structures to carry out charitable intentions now and beyond a donor’s lifetime. Thank you for joining us as we make Kansas City a better place to live, now and for generations to come. This is your foundation, and this is your Kansas City. Laura McKnight President and CEO ANNUAL REPORT 2006 Letter from the board chair On behalf of the board of directors of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, I extend my sincere appreciation to each of you for joining the Community Foundation in improving our region’s quality of life. 2006 marked an important milestone in the Community Foundation’s history when the cumulative total of grants from funds reached the billion dollar mark. What a difference you and other donors have made through the Community Foundation and its affiliates! The Community Foundation’s privilege of serving you to fulfill your charitable endeavors comes with the equally important responsibility of stewardship. That is why the Community Foundation has been committed to best-in-class governance since the time when seven community leaders established the foundation by “passing a hat” in 1978. The board of directors and staff are committed to maintaining the highest standards of board oversight and responsible management without compromising the entrepreneurial spirit required for the Community Foundation to meet its important mission to improve Kansas City’s quality of life. It is essential for the nonprofit sector to preserve America’s trust in exempt entities, which are becoming more and more critical to the nation’s infrastructure and quality of life. The Community Foundation strives to be a role model for other community foundations across the country and for the nonprofit organizations in our community. In 2006 the Community Foundation fully incorporated the provisions of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (“HR 4”) into its policies and procedures. In fact, the majority of the new policies simply formalized best practices already in place at the Foundation. The Community Foundation’s board of directors and management team continue to conduct thorough governance reviews, process upgrades and internal audit reviews to ensure that the Foundation complies with the highest standards of corporate governance. For example, the board of directors conducts executive sessions at every meeting, a staff internal audit committee meets monthly and reports to the board audit committee, and the corporate counsel department at the Community Foundation grew to three attorneys deep. Finally, the Community Foundation’s 2006 report of independent auditors once again reflects an unqualified opinion. The Community Foundation’s DonorEdge® resource encourages all nonprofit organizations to adopt best governance practices in staffing, finance, succession planning, audit and, as importantly, in program outcomes. The “Check Mark” is a great way to quickly determine whether a particular DonorEdge® nonprofit has in place the critical components of good governance. The role of the board of directors is to provide unwavering strategic leadership to the Community Foundation and its affiliates—community assets that are critical to our region’s long-term success. It has been my pleasure to serve you in my role as chair of the board. It is essential for the nonprofit sector to preserve America’s trust. Sandra A.J. Sometimes donors ask the Community Foundation for advice about smart charitable investments—investments that can leverage the greatest good for the future of our region. The Community Foundation engages in community leadership work for precisely that reason. The Community Foundation’s leadership work is based on the priorities articulated in the 2001 “Citistates Report” and the “Time to Get It Right” reports issued in 2005 and 2007. One of those priorities is strengthening the region’s urban education pipeline to prepare all of our children for success. If this is something that also is important to you, we certainly invite you to join us in this effort. You can establish a scholarship fund to give more students access to quality education, establish an endowed chair to enable an educational institution to recruit top talent to Kansas City, or make a variety of other investments, large and small, that will help brighten the future for our region. The Community Foundation houses 152 scholarship funds. Each scholarship fund—like each of our nearly 2,000 funds— has an amazing story behind it. Many thanks to the donors who have allowed us to feature them in this report. In the coming pages, you will be inspired by glimpses of the wonderful ways Kansas Citians are giving back to our community. 22 Greater Kansas City Community Foundation 23 Hispanic scholarship fund Greater Kansas City’s Hispanic Scholarship Fund, since its inception in 1984, has awarded more than 1,930 scholarships totaling almost $1.5 million through money raised from the public and private sector, as well as matching scholarships from area colleges and universities. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships each year to college students of Hispanic descent who are both entering or continuing their college education. The fund is overseen by the Hispanic Development Fund, one of the Community Foundation’s affiliated foundations. The fund continues to be one of the few local programs in the country that consistently awards more than 80 scholarships each year. 24 “The Hispanic Scholarship Fund continues to be one of the few local scholarship programs in the country that consistently awards more than 80 scholarships each year,” said Ramon Murguia, chair of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Advisory Board. “We are very proud that our scholarship fund has contributed to the success of many area professional Latinos and we plan to continue investing in our community’s future by providing support for education.” For complete scholarship criteria please visit www.gkccf.org. ANNUAL REPORT 2006 25 Kansas City Securities Association Education Endowment Fund The Kansas City Securities Association, an organization of more than 40 investment professionals in the Kansas City area, established the KCSA Education Endowment Fund to provide financial support for tuition, special projects, needs or emergency situations to benefit students at or below the college level in Greater Kansas City. Over the past 26 years, KCSA has awarded more than 188 college scholarships totaling an estimated $1.2 million to members of Kansas City’s Marching Cobras, student athletes selected by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, student athletes at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. In addition to the scholarships, KCSA recently established the KCSA Education Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. For complete scholarship criteria please visit www.gkccf.org. In the past 26 years, KCSA has awarded more than 188 college scholarships totaling an estimated $1.2 million. 26 27 trent green scholarship fund If you are a football fan, you know who Trent Green is. But this All-Pro NFL quarterback is making his mark on Kansas City in more ways than one. Trent and his wife, Julie, established the Trent Green Scholarship Fund to help Kansas City, Kansas, high school graduates pursue a teaching degree at an in-state college or university. We believe that all students should have equal access to higher education. 28 “Julie and I met while we were attending Indiana University, and earning a college degree was important to both of us,” Green said. “In fact, it’s such a passion for Julie that her degree is in education. We set up this scholarship fund because we believe that all students should have equal access to higher education, and we feel like this is how we can help in a meaningful way.” For complete scholarship criteria please visit www.gkccf.org. ANNUAL REPORT 2006 29 Forever Friends Diana Lain Hughes Scholarship Fund Junior high school is a tough time in the lives of young people. Students seeking their identity turn to others for encouragement and approval. Sometimes a special teacher emerges as a source of inspiration. Diana Lain Hughes was one of those individuals. Diana taught her students respect and celebrated their wacky personalities. She also encouraged them to be the exceptional individuals she knew they could be. At the age of 43, Diana’s life changed dramatically. The energetic, creative communications teacher and reading specialist suffered a brainstem stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to speak for the remaining 15 years of her life. The Forever Friends scholarship was set up by Diana’s family and friends as a way of demonstrating Diana’s encouragement and support for students pursuing a degree in teaching, allied health care or nursing. Diana Lain Hughes encouraged her students to be the exceptional individuals she knew they could be. For complete scholarship criteria please visit www.gkccf.org. 30 Greater Kansas City Community Foundation 31 Wyandotte High School Winchell Children College Scholarship Fund Bulldog spirit fills Wyandotte High School’s historic building, which is widely known for its twin towers that are said to represent knowledge and character. Wyandotte High School’s students and faculty embody the spirit of life-long learners and never stop challenging themselves to achieve their very best. To encourage this enthusiasm, Wyandotte High School established the Wyandotte High School/Winchell Children College Scholarship Fund. The school’s scholarship fund provides financial assistance to four students and one teacher who are furthering their college education. “The strong support we receive from our faculty and parents is what makes Wyandotte High School an extraordinary place for our students,” said Walt Thompson, principal of Wyandotte High School. “We believe all students will reach higher levels of success and the achievement gap between student groups will disappear. And that is just part of what the Bulldog spirit is all about.” For complete scholarship criteria please visit www.gkccf.org. The strong support we receive from our faculty and parents is what makes Wyandotte High School an extraordinary place for our students. 32 33 General Hospital #2 Perpetual Trust Fund Like many cities, Kansas City’s history includes dismal struggles with racial equity. So much so that in 1911, AfricanAmerican patients, doctors and nurses were restricted to providing and receiving medical treatment in General Hospital #2—a separate facility from General Hospital #1, which served only Caucasians. In 1957, General Hospital #2 merged with General Hospital #1 to become Truman Medical Center. Until that merger, General Hospital #2’s School of Nursing operated for 46 years and graduated 715 students. The General Hospital #2 Perpetual Trust Fund was started by a group of nurses who attended the School of Nursing and share the same passion for providing scholarships to AfricanAmerican students in Greater Kansas City who are attending accredited nursing programs. For complete scholarship criteria please visit www.gkccf.org. 34 Greater Kansas City Community Foundation The fund was started by a group of nurses who share the same passion for providing scholarships to African-American students. 35 Central City Schools Hearst Scholarship Fund Kansas City’s urban core faces many challenges and the need to stabilize neighborhoods is a community imperative. The greatest tool in providing stabilization in the ever-changing face of the urban core is the neighborhood school. The Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph established the Central City School Fund, which is dedicated to promoting valuesbased, quality education to children in the urban core. The fund accomplishes this by providing financial support to the Central City Schools, and a partnering fund, the Central City Schools Hearst Scholarship Fund, provides needs-based tuition assistance. The joyful aspect of reviewing scholarship applications comes from the bright world of opportunity and hope. 36 “This being my first year as executive director, reviewing the scholarship applications was a new and shocking experience with both painful and joyful lessons,” said Dan Ryan, executive director of the Central City School Fund. “The painful part came from seeing children’s names attached to statistical poverty. The joyful aspect comes from the bright world of opportunity and hope that the Central City School Fund helps make possible for them.” For complete scholarship criteria please visit www.gkccf.org. ANNUAL REPORT 2006 37 fund listing An absolutely critical principle in our work at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is to always ask, “What is important to you?” We ask that question of every donor, every nonprofit organization and every board member—anyone with whom we interact. We want to know, “What is important to you? What do you know about the community? What are the things you would like to see improve in Kansas City to make it an even better place?” When a charitable fund is established at the Community Foundation, it is the donor who determines the purpose of the fund. As the donor’s partner in charitable giving, we ensure that the fund follows the donor’s intent. We are grateful to our donors for their passion and commitment to improving our region’s quality of life. This fund listing includes only funds that have given us permission to publish their names and were in existence in 2006. Funds are listed alphabetically. If a fund is established with one of our affiliates, the fund name will be followed with that affiliate’s initials.
