General Theme
Gingers are an exceptionally important
understory component in the tropical forests of
Southeast Asia. Thailand has one of the richest
ginger floras in the world. Of the approximately 50
genera of Zingiberaceae presently known to
science, 26 of them are found as native plants
within the borders of the Kingdom of Thailand.
Moreover, about 300 of the approximately 1,400
species of gingers described worldwide are native
to Thailand.
Gingers, an important part of the tropical flora,
are appreciated and used worldwide as ornamental
plants, spices and in medicinal preparations.
Besides being important in the kitchen garden,
gingers also have many medicinal properties which
are well known in ethnomedicine. Gingers have
been a part of Asian cultures for as long as these
cultures have been documented, which has helped
to highlight gingers as symbols of the immense
biodiversity of the rain forests. It is imperative that
active scientific studies be continued on the role of
gingers in rain forest ecology and that gingers are
identified for urgent conservation attention.
The International Symposium on Gingers is held
about every three years and is the only international
event worldwide to focus on this plant family. The
7th symposium will highlight recent developments
and research on the family Zingiberaceae and other
families in the order Zingiberales. It also will provide
a venue for researchers to meet and discuss their
work.
The Botanical Garden Organization is a comprehensive botanical research institution of plant
resources, focusing on conservation biology and
plant resource development. Over 200 ginger
species from Thailand and surrounding countries
have been collected and planted in the Ginger
Garden at Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, Chiang Mai,
Thailand. This symposium will emphasize multiple
approaches to exploring the Zingiberaceae family
and the great potential that Gingers have for improving the quality of life of all mankind in celebration of
Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday as well as on the
auspicious occasion of the 60th birthday anniversary
of HRM Princess Maha Chakri Sirinhorn.
