LIGHT INDICATOR FUNCTION LIGHTS GUIDETO THETROPICISLEHEATERWITHINDICATOR HOMEOWNER'S The four indicator lights are provided to.help you understand lhe operation oJ the heater and if something should .go wrong, to help find the problem. HEATLIGHT& HI.LIMITLIGHT Wheneverthe pressurelighl is on and the thermosiat is sei to call for heating, the heat light will normally come on and heating ot the water will occur, (when the gas valveknob is in the "On" oosition). When the water has reached the desired lemperature the heat light will go out, water heating will stop. lf the hi-limit light comes on instead of the heat light, it indicales that the high limit thermoslats have been activated due io an over heating condition. Check for closed valves, a dirty filter, or a clogged pump basket that could preventwater flow. The threemaioritemsthat can causeproblemswith your gool heaterare pH,ChlorineResidualandTotalAlkalinity. Thesethingsif not kept in properbalancewill causeyour poolheaterto tormcalciumor limein the tubesot the heat exchangerwhich can shortenthe lile of the heaterand create damage. WHATCHLORINEDOES Two pool guests you do not want are algae and bacteria. To get rid ot them and make pool water sanitary tor swim' ming - as well as to improve the water's taste, odor and clarity - some sort of diainfectenl must be used. Chlorine, universallyapprovedby health authorities,is the accepteddisinfecting agent for bacteria. And, by maintain' ing a free chlorine residual or no less than 0.6 ppm (parts per million), algae can also be prevented. WHATIS CHLORINERESIDUAL? When you add chlorine to the pool water, a portion of the chlorine will be consumed in the process ol deslroying bacteria, algae and othet oxidizable materials. The chlorine remaining is called chloline residual. You can determine the chlorine residual ot your pool water with a reliable test kit, available lrom your Guardex dealer. You musl mainlain a lree chlorine residual level adequale enough to assute a continuous kill ot bacteria or virus introduced into pool water by swimmers, through the air, from dust, rain or other sources.Since chlorine residual is lowered by sunlight (ils ultraviolet rays decompose chlorine) it is impossible to mainlain a constant residual tevel with most torms of chlorine unless a mechanical device - a Hypochlorinator- is used to feed the chlorine compound coniinuouslY. pH CHART StronolvAlkaline Neutral Acid 1 1 1 21 3 1 4 o 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 0 MuriaticAcid hasa pH of about0. Purewateris 7 (neutral). WeakLye solutionshavea pH of 13-14. RULE:7.4to 7.6is a desirablepH range. It is essentialto maintaincorrectpH. lf pH becomestoo high(overalkaline)it has theseetfects. 1. Greatlylowersthe abilityof chlorineto destroybacteria and algae, 2. Waterbecomescloudy. 3. Thereis moredangerof scaleformalionon the plaster or in the coils ot the heater. 4. Filtermay becomeblocked. lf pH is too low (overacid)theremay be: 1. Excessive eye burnor skin irritation. 2. Etchingot the plaster. 3. Corrosionot metalfixturesin the tiltrationandrecirculation system, which may createbrown, blue, green,or almostblackslainson the plaster. som'etimes 4. Gate valves should nol be installed on the return line from the heater.
