Delivering the Latest News from Cinco Ranch High School
A NOTE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL
“CROSSWORDS”:
I would like to start by saying thanks
to students, staff, and parents for another phenomenal year at Cinco
Ranch. Our school continues to demonstrate excellence in all its endeavors. Students here work hard to develop and utilize their talents. They
give back to our community and
achieve goals daily. Our teachers
are committed to providing quality
learning experiences for our students. They also demonstrate a passion for their subject matter, but most
importantly, they demonstrate a love
for kids. Our parents are wonderful
partners in this educational process.
Parents show their love and commitment to their own children by investing in their educational experiences.
For that, we are extremely grateful.
We could not do it without you.
While there are always challenges
that go along with educating 3,000
students each year, we work through
those challenges with the understanding that our students, your children, will be prepared for the next
steps in their lives, whether those
steps are moving on to the next
grade level or moving on to higher
education or the workforce. We
want to ensure your children have
had a meaningful, enriching experience at Cinco Ranch High School.
As we prepare to close out this 20112012 school year, I reflect back on
what has been an amazing year.
There have been so many outstanding accomplishments from numerous individuals and student
groups. I could take up an entire
website listing them all. If you don’t
believe that, take a look back at all
the “Good News eNews” emails that
came out throughout this year, and
you will see exactly what I am talking
about. I am excited to close out this
year with another impressive graduating class. It is a rewarding experience to watch them walk across that
stage as they end one phase of their
lives and begin another. I am also
excited about preparing for next
year. Each year is such a unique and
fun experience. I have said it before,
and it bears repeating. I love our
school and feel honored to lead it.
Once again, I thank all the students,
teachers/staff, and parents for taking
such great pride in being a Cougar.
I know that being a Cinco Ranch
Cougar means something special to
us all. I could not think of a better
family to be a part of!
Until next fall…take care!

TAKS 2012 Test
Students in grades 10 &11 took the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test this spring.
Students in 10th grade took English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science. Eleventh graders
took the official Exit Level TAKS test for the first time. TAKS test results will be mailed home in early June.
Please keep in mind that a student cannot receive a Texas High School diploma until he/she passes all four
sections of the Exit Level TAKS test. Once an individual section is passed, it does not have to be taken
again. There will be numerous opportunities for students to take this test between the spring of their junior
year and the spring of their senior year.
TAKS – Exit Level Retake (11th & 12th grade only)
If your child was absent or did not pass one of the sections of the Exit Level TAKS test, they may take any of
the sections on the following dates:
July 9 – English Language Arts
July 10 – Math
July 11 – Science
July 12 – Social Studies
LOCATION: Raines High School
If you are interested in taking the Exit level TAKS test in July, you must fill out a registration form. These
forms are available in the counselors’ office. TAKS test preparation classes are available free of charge to
Katy ISD students. Please see summer school brochure for specific information on times, dates, and registration.

Seniors
We are so excited to see what our students have accomplished as seniors, ready for graduation! Hopefully
you can look back fondly on your memories of CRHS and look expectantly into a future that is wide open with
possibility.
It has been our honor and privilege to serve you these past 4 years. Everyone has been so supportive of
CRHS and its faculty and staff. We know you have prepared for the next phase of your life and would like to
wish you the best in whatever endeavors you choose.
We are so very proud of each of you and wish you a happy graduation and safe and enjoyable summer.
Juniors
As of August 2012 you are going to have a SENIOR in the house! Next year will be unique, exciting, and
even a little chaotic at times. As counselors, we look forward to a year filled with applications, scholarships,
honors, awards, recommendations, college visits and much more.
TESTING: SAT/ACT
All students in the Class of 2013 have been strongly urged to take both the SAT and the ACT during the
spring of their junior year or in June. If you have missed the registration deadlines for June, it is sometimes
possible to “go standby.” See the registration packets in the counselors’ offices for details and the extra fees.
Study guides are also available for both the SAT and ACT.
Sophomores
Wow! How wonderful it has been to become more acquainted with this terrific sophomore class. We are
happy to see these young people making progress. With half of their high school experience finished, we are
reminded of the “ups and downs” of our high school years. The times stand out clearly in our minds as a significant part of our lives. We encourage you to think about the changes you have seen in your child over the
past two years and perhaps ask what we can all do to help guide your teenager toward becoming a mature
and responsible adult.
Freshmen
We are very proud of the way our freshmen have made the transition to high school. It’s hard to believe the
year is nearing its end. Summer school is an excellent option if your student needs more credits or would
simply like to have more room in their schedule for electives.
Finally, we would like to thank the Cougar Colleagues for helping our new students this year. In addition, we
thank all of our parents and students for helping to make the ’11 – ’12 school year a very successful one!
Final Report Cards
Final report cards will be mailed home. Look for them during the second week in June. Students who do not
pass a course(s) will receive separately mailed failure notices. Please refer to summer school registration
information in this newsletter or you may also access information on the KISD website.
We hope the summer is safe and restful for you and your family. We will see you in August.

Class of 2012 Senior Information
Final Transcripts
Seniors received final transcript instructions during advisory in April. When completed, the Request For Final Transcript needs to be turned in to the Registrar’s Office, no later than the last day of school. An envelope addressed with postage is required if your college is not listed on the back of the form. Final transcripts
will be mailed by June 15, 2012. There is no charge for the final transcript; however, if more than one is requested to be sent, the additional transcripts will be $1 each. Once again you will need to bring the envelope
addressed with postage if the university is not listed on the back of the card.
Diplomas
During the graduation ceremony on June 1st, at 7:00 pm, the students will receive their diploma cover only.
Beginning Monday, June 18, 2012, the diplomas will be available for pick-up in the Main Office. Diplomas will
need to be picked up, as we DO NOT mail them. If a student has any outstanding fees, fines, or missing
textbooks, they must be cleared before a diploma or final transcript will be released. Along with the diploma,
your child will receive an unofficial copy of their final transcript with immunization records to be filed with their
vital records at home.

Spirit of Innovation Competition
Cinco Ranch has officially taken the national title of the Conrad Foundation's Spirit of Innovation
Competition in the Aerospace Exploration division. Please heartily congratulate the winning team,
Moonwalking Manakins, Pedro de Souza, Philippa Hack and Camilo Ruiz. These three OUTSTANDING students became finalists in the national competition weeks ago and were invited to the
NASA Ames Research Center in California. Here they presented their innovative design for a new
external pace maker designed to eliminate muscle atrophy in astronauts and avoid dangerous, invasive surgery. Throughout the competition they worked hard, performed well, and behaved with
the utmost sportsmanship. In addition, they had the opportunity to meet dozens of engineers,
CEOs, and patent layers dedicated to bringing their idea to market. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, the team was selected as winner of the very competitive aerospace division. Future
plans include using the $5000 to continue development, get a patent, and create a working prototype. CRHS teacher Shawn Richard serves as the students' mentor.

Congratulations to our CRHS students who participated in the State TAEA VASE competition held

District Regional Champions! Congratulations to the girls golf team for capturing 1st place at the
Regional Golf Tournament and earning the opportunity to compete in the State Tournament!! This
is the first time in school history that the girls have ever captured 1st place at this tournament. A
tournament is normally two days long (18 holes each day), but due to the weather, we were only
able to get one day in so there was lots of pressure on the girls!! They did an amazing job and won
by about 15 strokes!!
The team members include:

Megan Webster
Morgan Galloway
Kirsten Hensley
Kennedy Ishee
Sarah Yi (she was our alternate)

back strong on day two to take 2nd place at the Regional Tournament. They also competed in the
state tournament with the girls!! The boys were actually the defending District Regional champions
from last year. They also did an amazing job of coming back after day one.

Tennis
On to state!! Maximo Agoglia qualified the hard way. He lost the semi-final and then won the
match for third place. Fortunately for Maximo, the result in the final that he needed happened. He
had a playback for 2nd place and won. He qualified for the state tournament as the Regional Runner-Up. It was Maximo’s record-breaking third consecutive trip to the state tournament in his four
years at Cinco Ranch. His record for the spring is 34-1!!! An awesome accomplishment!! Maximo
defeated Ciro Lampasses from Memorial 7-6, 6-4 in a tense thriller to secure the District Championship. He went into the Regional Tournament seeded #1 and undefeated for the spring season. He
is the first Cougar to win 4 Varsity District Championships!!!! He has definitely had a record breaking
year for Cinco Ranch. Paloma Alatorre played a great match at district competition, earning 3rd
place by defeating Memorial in Varsity Girls Singles. Freddy Daum/Mick Oyardo lost a tough match
to a very, very strong Memorial team to earn 4th in Varsity Boys Doubles. On the sub-varsity side,
Emily Gilcrease lost a tough final to earn 2nd place in JV Girls Singles. Caitlin Alverson and Kohl
Matcek won their third place match in JV Mixed Doubles. Finishing 4th with a great tournament
were Collin Williams and Ryan Stomp in Freshman Boys Doubles. In the last two tournaments before the District, the Varsity Tennis team competed in our own Katy ISD tournament. We had several great results:
1st place: Maximo Agoglia (Boy's A Singles--only losing 7 games in 4 total matches!!)
Semi-Finals: Freddy Daum Mick Oyardo (Boy's A Doubles) Consolation Winners: Matthew Burch
Ogheneyoma (Yoma) Ogbevire Consolation Finalists: Bianca Tijerina Ambi Chi. The team also
competed in the prestigious Kemah Invitational Tennis tournament, which hosts teams from all over
the state--not just ones in our region. The competition was very tough--but it was great experience
for our players. We are proud to say we had our first placement by a boy athlete in Cinco Ranch's
history. Maximo Agoglia won the tournament beating a very tough player from Memorial High
School in the final. Maximo completed the spring season undefeated. Colin Harvey and Richard
May are the coaches for tennis.
Track
Congratulations to the Cinco Ranch 4x800 team of Sam Wallace, David Anamosa, and Mitchell
Pence for winning the Texas Relays championships in Austin. They ran 7.51 which is the fastest
time in the state and the 2nd fastest in the nation this year! The Cinco Ranch Boys and Girls track
field teams completed district and had several runners compete at regionals. At Regionals, James
Rhoden qualified for State in the 300 meter hurdles. At District, the boys finished the meet in 2nd
and the girls 4th. We had many district champions in their individual events. Blake Burlingame won
the long jump. Sam Wallace won the 800. David Anamosa and Chanell O'Connor won the 400
meter dash. James Rhoden won the 300 meter hurdles. The 4x400 meter relay team of Blake Burlingame, Sam Wallace, James Rhoden and David Anamosa also claimed a district title. Other regional qualifiers included Daphne Cervantes, Samantha Kubiak, Keith Neshyba, Jake Rider, Taylor

Robotics
The Cinco Ranch High School Robotics Team (CRyptonite) qualified for and competed in the
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) World Championship Competition in St. Louis with their robot, Panzer, on April 26-28 after winning the Bayou Regional
competition in New Orleans. After 9 qualification matches, the team was ranked 9th out of the
100 teams competing on their field, and they made it all the way to semi-finals--the best the team
has ever done! The robotics team also did an amazing job at the Houston Regional. They went
14-0 until they got to the Finals and had to play against 2 other powerhouse teams. Unfortunately, their teammate (coincidentally, the same team they teamed with and won the New Orleans Regional with) had some problems with their robot and was not functioning, leaving them
to fight for points by themselves against the other two teams. They lost the next two matches as
a result and finished 14-2, coming in 2nd place. Their awards included the Industrial Design
award for our amazing robot. Team President, Elizabeth Waters, was honored with the Deans
List Nomination (only 2 students at each regional get nominated). Those of you that know her
will understand that she is an amazing student and a super asset to this robotics team. They
also received the honor of performing with the robot at a Houston Rockets half-time show. They
will keep you posted on when that will be. Congratulations for an outstanding, record-setting season. For more information about FIRST or the CRHS Robotics team, check out

Ice Cougars Win 3rd Place at State Championship
Members of the Texas State Cup team included: Captains and seniors, Julien Demers, Wayne Hubley (ISHL All-Time
Assist Leader); Assistant Captains, senior, Taylor Engel and junior, Robert Fernandes; seniors, Cody Heiser and John
Schroeder; junior, Luke Hamilton; sophomores, Nick Bourdoumis, Mason Corliss, Tyler Fenske, Michael Hertlein, Ryan
James, Nick Manning, Erik Moses and Brian Spengler; freshmen, James DiStefano, Michael Fernandes, and Collin Williams. Ice Cougar team members unable to attend the tournament included juniors, Dylan Carpenter, Nolan Hurd, and
Connor Sharrah, sophomore, Connor Hiller and freshman, Cam Vahlkamp.
The Cinco Ranch Ice Cougars hockey team skated home with a 3rd Place trophy in the Texas Cup State
Championship - Silver Division, held in Dallas the weekend of March 23rd -25th, 2012. The win topped off
another stellar season for this high school hockey team.
The Ice Cougars ended their regular season in first place in the ISHL (Interscholastic Hockey League) with
some impressive statistics; 19 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. Finishing at the top put a large target on their back as
they entered the tournament leading up to the championship game for the Justice Cup City title. A disappointing loss to Seven Lakes in the third game meant a 3rd Place finish instead of the Justice Cup title for the
2011-2012 season, but it secured the Ice Cougars a spot in the State Championship tournament. The Ice
Cougars, who entered as 7th seed, traveled to Dallas to take on the top hockey teams from Houston, Dallas,
and Austin. Two wins and one loss equaled the 3rd Place trophy for the Texas Cup State Championship Silver Division.
The team would like to extend their gratitude to their Head Coach Artie Jean and Assistant Coaches
James Miller and Kavon Kootahi, as well as Team Manager Rose Fernandes, and Team Representative Susan Manning for all of their hard work, time and dedication. Special thanks to Laury Good,
CRHS Teacher Advisor for her on-going support and assistance of the team.
Cinco Ranch Cougar fans are invited to come out next year and watch the "coolest" game in high school athletics!
