I The Children At Risk organization was created to improve the quality of life for Greater Houston’s children
through strategic research, public policy analysis, education, collaboration, and advocacy. We were also recognized in both Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s top high schools. We like
knowing that the rest of the state and country recognizes what we know to be true, and that is that we have one
. remarkable school.
I want to take a moment to thank so many parents who have invested so much time and energy into helping our
students and teachers. It is that commitment that makes us a premier, remarkable, and beacon school. Those
words have been used to describe our school by people in our community. I certainly like those words and
thought you would too. Thanks to all of you for not only seeing the value in your child’s education, but investing
your time and energy in it as well.
Keep an eye out for all the remarkable things going on here at Cinco. We’ve got athletics, fine arts, student
clubs, and the daily academics all in full swing. We have never been more powered by
optimism and fueled by determination to impact young people’s lives than we are now.
Looking forward to watching our students achieve great things in all their endeavors.
Until next time… take care!

COLLEGE AND CAREER NIGHT
October 10, 2012
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm @ The Merrell Center
Approximately 200 Texas and National college and university representatives will be attending to answer questions
and supply valuable information about their campuses. Military representatives and career speakers will also be present. The format consists of an informal browsing area, formal classroom presentations for some colleges, and a
financial aid session. Take our advice and get there early. It will be CROWDED.
JUNIOR PARENT NIGHT
November 13, 2012
6:30 pm @ CRHS in the Commons
We will be discussing graduation plans, GPA, Class Rank, credits, correspondence courses, the PSAT, college admissions, college entrance tests, and a timetable of what needs to be done. During the Counselors’ visits each student will be given a copy of the Junior- Senior handbook that we would like you to bring to Junior Parent Night. We
look forward to seeing each junior parent there.
SAT and ACT
During the spring and/or early June, all college-bound juniors should take the SAT and/or ACT test at least once.
The dates for these tests are available on our campus website under the Counselor tab, and registration packets for
both tests are available in the counselors’ office. Students and their parents should pay close attention to the registration deadline dates.
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION which CRHS receives will be advertised by a Scholarship Bulletin posted in the
Counselors’ office and on the CRHS website. This bulletin will be updated throughout the school year. It is the student’s responsibility to read the bulletin and come by the Counselors’ office for applications. It is extremely important
that transcript and application procedures and deadlines to the Counselors’ office be met. Other avenues of accessing scholarship information are: libraries, your employer, local organizations, church, and the internet.

SENIOR PARENT NIGHT
A heartfelt thank you to all senior parents who attended Senior Parent Night on September 11th. It was wonderful to
see so much parental involvement and concern. We hope the handouts and information we shared with you will be
helpful. For those of you who were unable to attend, you may come by the Counselors’ office to pick up the handouts.
COMMON APPLICATION (State of Texas) – The majority of the Texas 2 and 4 year public universities will use this application. During the September guidance sessions, we discussed the finer points of filling out this application with your
senior. These applications can be completed online at: www.applytexas.org.
Junior-Senior HANDBOOKS – These have been or will be distributed to each junior and senior during our guidance
visits to the English classes in September & November. These booklets contain VALUABLE information on testing
dates, registration deadlines, college admission procedures, housing, and financial aid/scholarship information, internet
addresses for the College Board, and a partial list of Texas Colleges and their websites. Please review it with your child
and refer to it often throughout their junior and senior year.

If you have ever considered walking or biking to school, there has never been a better time. The traffic is
the worst it has been in ten years and the weather is getting cooler. Here are some other reasons to walk
or bike to school:
• Great for your health. 150 minutes a week of brisk walking can reduce the risk of illnesses such as
type-2 diabetes, heart disease and depression.
• Boosts brain function. Japanese scientists found that rats that exercise regularly have increased
short and long term memory.
• Reduce pollution. Leaving your car at home two days a week will reduce traffic congestion and
greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,600 lbs./year.
• More alert in class.
• Cooler than riding in a hot car. When biking, air moves across your body at the speed you are riding making you feel cooler. In ninety-degree weather, the temperature inside your car can reach
well over 120°F.
• Save money.
Be safe:
• Use sidewalks.
• Make yourself visible! Place a light on your bike.
• Wear a helmet when riding. Helmets reduce head injuries by 85% and
brain injury by 88%.
• Make eye contact with drivers at all intersections.
Congratulations!!!!
We did it! Thanks to the wonderful support of Mr. Cross, the wonderful CRHS staff, PTSA and especially our Environmental Chair, Sofia
Peruzzi. We won the Texas PTA Gold Environmental Award for
2011-2012! CRHS is truly a Green School a school that cares about
its environment. Thank you for your support.

We love doing nice things for our teachers, staff and students, but we need YOUR help to make
CRHS a better place to teach and to learn. Last year’s 1000 PTSA members contributed over
$17,000 to CRHS in instructional materials and school equipment!
PTSA awarded $3500 in scholarships to its senior student members. Students eligible for scholarships must be members for at least two years prior to applying along with one parent.
All PTSA members enjoy discounts with the following: T-Mobile, Sea World, La
Quinta, Nationwide, Enterprise, Dell, Shlitterbahn, Six Flags and Office Max.
Our Goal each year is to have 100% participation – that’s approximately 3000 members. Join
PTSA and make a real difference in our school community! Membership applications can be
found at www.crhsptsa.org. (Parent $10/Student $7)
FBLA National Leadership Conference
This summer, 8,000 members of Future Business Leaders of America from around the country attended the National Leadership Conference in San Antonio. Participants competed in
many events, ranging from public speaking to
business math. Students attending from Cinco
Ranch had previously qualified by competing at
the State Leadership Conference in March.
Upon arrival in San Antonio, the team visited
Fiesta, Texas, enjoying some relaxation time
before the conference began. Over the course
of the next five days, participants attended the
Institute for Leaders, competed in business
events, attended workshops, explored the city
of San Antonio, and even made some new
friends. Patel says, “It was exciting to meet new
people you never would have otherwise met.”
Another team member adds, “FBLA really
opened me to new experiences and I hope to attend another National Leadership Conference
next year.”
Cinco Ranch students pictured above include:
(back row) Ashley Ramsey, Selena Ilbeig, Jacqueline Huang, Saloni Tandon, Brinda Penmetsa, Vennela Pothugunta, (front row) James

During the summer, continuing with our tradition, CRHS Orchestra summer picnic was attended
by over 40 students at Mary Jo Peckham Park on Jun 20th. It was an opportunity for the students, faculty and parent volunteers to catch up over a number of fun activities.
Meanwhile, we welcomed Mr. Oscar Vera back to CRHS as our full time assistant orchestra
director. We thank Mr. Troy Eads for his service and dedication to the students of the orchestra
program and wish him well in his newly assigned role within Katy ISD. Furthermore, we are fortunate to have Ms. Constance Shing, a senior at Baylor University, as our Student Teacher this
fall.
Before the start of the formal school year, many of the CRHS Orchestra participants got started
with the Orchestra Camp, held at CRHS Aug 06-09. Led by Mr. Brett Nelsen, Mr. Oscar Vera
and assisted by Ms. Constance Shing and attended by over 110 students, this was a great
event especially for incoming freshmen to interact with the faculty and fellow students. This was
followed by a breakfast gathering on Aug 10, which was equally well attended.
In parallel, CRHS Orchestra students have been breaking new grounds. Already recognized as
one of the top high school orchestra programs in the state of Texas, we added another feather
in our cap as Spencer Taylor was recognized as an Outstanding Soloist based on his performance of the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto at the 2012 Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition. He is only one of six students during the history of the program to receive this honor and
the most recent one since 2004.
We thank all the parents who joined Open House on Sep 05 and Parent Information Meeting/
Ice Cream Social on Sep 13. It was nice meeting everyone and we expect to see you at upcoming fall and winter concerts. Special thanks to the CRHS Orchestra Friends (CRHSOF) volunteers for organizing and supporting summer picnic, orchestra camp, parent information session etc.
By this time, all current CRHS orchestra members should have verified their contact information
in CHARMS and paid the annual due for uniforms etc.. If you have not done so, please do
asap. Visit CRHS Orchestra website and click on ‘Announcement’s section for more information/forms etc..
