Nourish Hope - Food Bank of Waterloo Region
Nourish Hope 2010 - 2011 ANNUAL REPORT How do I feed 26,500 neighbours? Message from the President of the Board R ecently I heard the story of Wanda, a single mother who found success because food assistance was available when she needed it. Wanda’s story touched me, revealing an overlap between my professional career at TD Bank and my responsibilities as President of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. Three years ago Wanda packed her car with her young son and their few belongings. She drove away from strife in hope of a safe and promising future. Arriving in Kitchener she faced new realities: part time employment, temporary housing and hunger. It was hunger that prompted her to call The Food Bank. “Just a few groceries to get me to the next pay cheque is all I need if someone would be so kind,” asked Wanda. Staff referred Wanda to a community food program for support. Over the course 2 • THE FOOD BANK OF WATERLOO REGION serving of the next year, Wanda made four more trips to this hamper program. Then in 2009, Wanda called The Food Bank again, this time to say, “Thank You.” She was proud to be working full time as a bank teller and was ready to give back to the community by sharing her story. Wanda’s story brought me to a daunting realization; in my new role as President of The Food Bank Board I was accepting the responsibility of feeding people like Wanda and her son. Apart from those two there were 11,000 other parents and their children and many more single people. I will admit to a fleeting moment of panic as I thought about the costs of feeding 26,500 people. My role at The Food Bank is to provide direction and vision to a very competent group of volunteers and staff and to lead Board of Directors 2010 - 2011 President: Michael Dye Vice-President: Robert S. Grant Treasurer: Carol Leaman Youth on Board: Michael McCauley an initiative that relies on community support ... so no one goes hungry. Thankfully the past year has introduced me to countless examples of partnerships, philanthropy and community support. Thank you all for nourishing hope and feeding neighbours. McLay Angela Moisse Executive Director: Wendi Campbell ANNUAL REPORT 2010 - 2011 • 3 Together we feed 26,500 neighbours Our Mission Through community partnerships, we obtain and distribute emergency food from our neighbours for our neighbours. Food Is Our Business The Food Bank is part of the Food Assistance Network made up of over 100 emergency food programs. Our role is to acquire food and distribute it to agency programs in Waterloo Region for the people who need help. Last year 2.9 million pounds of food was distributed to 26,500 people through 70 member agency food programs such as food hampers, community meals, and shelter programs. We work with our community, corporate partners, the Ontario Association of Food Banks and Food Banks Canada to manage food industry trends and acquire the needed food so our member agencies can continue their good work. “We all sit at the same table, sometimes in different chairs. We are very proud of our partnership with The Food Bank. The positive working relationship allows us to provide excellent service in our 12 food bank supported programs.” Hunger Count Age* 10% Children 0-4 of The ourtesy rd Photo c Region Reco o Waterlo Our Vision To channel our community’s energy so no one goes hungry. 4 • THE FOOD BANK OF WATERLOO REGION 27.5% Member Agencies Anna Kaljas Residence Anselma House - Womens’ Crisis Services Argus Residence Brain Injury Association Community Ministry Conestoga College - 2 Country Hills Missionary Church Family Counselling Centre of Cambridge and North Dumfries Glencairn Mennonite Brethren Church – Glencairn Bridges Centre House of Friendship - 12 International Gospel Centre Kinbridge Community Association Kitchener Church of God KW Counselling STEAM Program Lang’s Farm Village Association – Youth and Teen Centre Lutherwood - Betty Thompson Youth Centre – Safe Haven Marillac Place Mill Courtland Community Centre Morningstar Family Ministries Mosaic Outreach - 3 New Dawn School Nutrition for Learning Out of the Cold - 7 R.O.O.F - 2 Ray of Hope – 2 S.H.O.W.
