Points to Ponder from Patty
Yeah maybe we are finally going to have
some
warmer weather. Looking forward to being outside and working in
the yard/garden. I know in a few months we will be complaining
about the heat but for now I'm certainly going to take advantage
of the beautiful sunny days.
Thanks to Martha for the great make and take in April. It was a
fun project and I can't believe you put all of those kits
together. It was definitely appreciated by all.
We will be holding elections at the May meeting for a new
President, 2nd Vice President and Treasurer. Please try to
attend the meeting so that we have the numbers necessary to take
care of this required business. Plus you won't want to miss the
presentation by Hannah on preparing your top for quilting and
special guest Kim Williams from Clarkson doing demo/talk on the 9
Degree Ruler. Will be a fun evening.
June is the Potluck meeting and we will be having a special guest
- Suzi Parron from Stone Mountain, GA will be presenting a slide
show and lecture on barn quilts. She has traveled extensively
and photographed the blocks and interviewed some of the owners.
She has written a book on barn quilts. Looking forward to a fun
evening with Suzi.
Make sure to thoroughly read the newsletter. Our group has so
much going on and I don't want you to miss out on anything. Also
make sure to check out the table up front at the meeting with all
of the sign up sheets/info sheets and info from Tia.
Keep working on challenge quilts for the September show. If you
need additional PFD fabric I have some and can get it to you.
Just let me know.

Loucon Retreat - Oct. 17 - 19
The Loucon Retreat is coming up fast and we have received a few sign ups but we are hoping
that more of you will be able to attend. The Loucon Training & Retreat Center is a wonderful place to spend a weekend away from it all, the main room where all of your ideas will be
sewed has been refurbished with a solid wood floor, great lighting and electrical sockets
everywhere and the best part is the room is quite large so you can spread out, of course you
can always choose to be up close and personal with your sewing buddies.
As part of the fun filled weekend there will be a couple of mini technique classes (free of
charge) to expand your quilting knowledge and we are having a Pajama Party on Saturday night
at Sew Much More with Dixie where she will give us highlights on new tools and techniques.
Due to the contract we established with Loucon we need at least 15 people to register or we
will have to cancel the weekend. We have paid a large deposit to reserve our weekend and we
(the Board members) do not want to lose a single dollar so if we do not receive the minimum
number of Stitchers members at the May guild meeting we will open the weekend up to other
individuals and groups. Also the balance of your registration should be paid in full by the
June meeting.

USartQuest.com is another good website for those interested in art quilts and products. There are
some project videos to watch. The current vidcast on Bonnie McCaffery’s website is #82 and it has
Sue Pickering Rothamel from usartquest.com showing products and how to use them in art quilts .

Don’t forget to pick up your quilt
show entry forms for the quilts
you bring to show and tell so that
they can be shared with attendees to
our great quilt show.
Open Sewing Days at the Extension. On the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month you can
utilize the Project room for open sewing day. This is a great opportunity to use large
table space to lay out/layer quilts and to have fellowship with other members. Hope to see
you there!
FACEBOOK GROUP
There is now a group called Stitchers Quilt Guild on Facebook. Kelly Pruitt loads pictures of the meetings, workshops, retreats, quilt
shows, etc. Anyone else should be able to add pictures they would like everyone to see also. Please keep it to quilt related pictures.
If you finished a new quilt and would like to post it for everyone to see this would be a great spot.
You have to have a facebook account and request to be friends with Stitchers Quilt Guild.

POTHOLDER EXCHANGE—June Potluck Meeting
There will be a potholder exchange during the June meeting. All potholders must be homemade
to be eligible for exchange. No store bought potholders will be accepted. There are many cute
patterns out there right now for potholders and you can even make 6 to 8 inch blocks to create a
potholder. Use your imagination.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY WORKSHOP
The Christmas in July Sign Up sheet will be available at the May meeting.
Kelly Pruitt and Pat McMillian will be teaching two different quilts at Sew
Much More in Clarkson on July 26 & 27, the supply lists will also be available.
Class fee is only 5.00 and snacks will be provided Friday night but you
are on your own for lunch Saturday. There is a BBQ place across the street
and a couple of other options in town.
Projects will be shown at the May meeting. You will be able to do both
projects if you wish although you may not finish both you will be able to
complete the projects on your own at home.
2013 Show Quilt Challenge. If there is a technique you would like to use with your
challenge and you are not familiar or comfortable with it, please let me know (Patty). I
will be glad to assist you or put you in contact with a member that is familiar with that
particular technique. I can be available at the UFOs throughout the year to demo/assist
you. Please let me know in advance so that I can be prepared. My email is: [email protected] or call my cell at 270-307-2226.
There will also be some opportunities for those attending the Loucon Retreat this October
where we will do some mini technique workshops throughout the weekend. We are sorry that it
will be too late to use these techniques in your Challenge Quilt.

KENTUCKY STAR’S
Here is our opportunity quilt for this year. We really appreciate
those of you that helped make these wonder blocks.
The pattern was used with permission from Martingale Publishing and Carol Doak from her book ‘50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced
Stars’.
Tickets will be available starting at the May meeting. Hopefully
everyone will take a bundle to sell so that this quilt will be our
best fundraising quilt ever.

THE STITCHES AND RIPS BOX
The Stitches & Rips (suggestion box) will be at all future meetings. If you have a compliment (a stitch) or a suggestion/question (a rip) please write it out and put it in the box
at the meeting. All Stitches and Rips will then be reviewed by the members of the Board and
answered accordingly. If you will not be at a regular meeting please forward your Stitch or
Rip to Tia Kennedy by email or phone call and I will pass it on to the Board.

FAMILY LIVING DEPARTMENT

RULES:
1. Exhibits will be accepted Monday, July 8, 2013, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m.
NO EXHIBITS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT ANY OTHER TIME.
2. Exhibitor will be limited to one entry in each class, but may exhibit in all classes.
3. If there is more than one article in any exhibit they should be fastened together.
4. Perishable food should be covered with clear transparent material.
5. All canned foods must be in standard jars with rings. NO rusty lids or rings accepted.
6. When one article is entered in a class, it will be judged on its merit for first, second or third prize or none
at all.
7. Items having won first prize in 2012 are not eligible for exhibiting in 2013.
8. Items not winning first place will be limited to entry for two years only.
9. All entries MUST be made by the person entering except in collectible items.
10. All quilts must be quilted by the exhibitor, except in categories 15, 16, and 17.
11. All exhibitors must be a resident of Hardin County.
12. Absolutely no soiled items accepted.
13. All items should be kept intact for display until Sunday, July 14, 2013.
14. Exhibits must be picked up between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013.
15. In each Family Living section there will be a sponsored award and a “Best of Show” ribbon.
16. After 3:00 p.m. all exhibitors may have to pay the gate admission when making an entry. Exhibitors to
which this will apply should plan to have an evening at the fair.
17. Exhibitors may use and are encouraged to use address labels on exhibit entry tags.
18. Fair Board is not responsible for any damage to fair entries. Enter at your own risk.
19. Flower Department Entries will be taken from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Judging will be at 4:30 p.m.
20. All culinary items will be judged on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 4:30 p.m.
21. Judges decisions are final!

Sulky Workshop - August 10th
I'm so excited about this workshop, I believe you will learn so many new techniques you
will go back to your sewing machines and quilt til you drop.
The kit and lunch fee for this workshop is $50, we split the fee into two $25 payments
for your convenience. Sulky requires payment for the kits 30 days in advance so anyone
attending the class will need to pay the balance no later than the June guild meeting.
The kits that Eric brings from Sulky cost a lot more than we are asked to pay so be prepared to be blessed. We will not be purchasing extra kits. Please see me (Tia) at the
sign up table to start or complete your registration. I will have the supply list
available to those who sign up and pay for the workshop at the May meeting.
DRESDEN GARDEN - $15.00

Teacher – Kelly Pruitt
For this quilt all pieces are attached to the background
during the machine quilting process, except flower stems.
Flower stems and centers can be hand or machine appliquéd
onto the background. You will want to have your freeform
machine quilting foot for the class. Machine quilting is not
taught in this class, so basic knowledge and ability is needed.
A second option would be that you could hand or machine
appliqué all your pieces down and then have your top quilted
by someone else if you are not comfortable doing freeform
machine quilting.
Fabric
1 Yard for the background – I used blue for sky
Stems – 1 FQ – must be a FQ
Grass and Leaves – 4 FQ’s or ¼ yard of 4 greens
Flowers – I used 10 different fabrics, some were used in more than one flower
Bring FQ’s or ¼ yard pieces. If using a striped fabric you may need more.

Batting – 36 x 45
NOTE: I made 7 flowers, you can design your layout as you please or follow mine.

ELECTIONS AND JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Elections are coming up in May for the positions of President, 2nd Vice President and Treasurer.
Below is a list of duties as stated in the By-Laws. The nominating committee is Ilse Comenzind
and Eileen Heinen. If you are interested in a position please let one of them know.
President:
1. Preside over monthly meetings of the Guild.
2. Is ex-officio member of all committees except the Nominating Committee and may create other
committees or select chairpersons not otherwise provided for in the By-Laws.
3. Appoints Parliamentarian and standing committee chairpersons as needed.
4. Must attend or appoint someone to attend all County Homemaker Council meetings.
5. Shall chair the Budget Committee and submit a proposed budget to the executive board at the
June board meeting.
6. Is an authorized signature on checks.
Second Vice President:
1. Second in line to preside over monthly guild meetings in the absence of the President.
2. Secures instructors and facilities for classes and workshops.
3. Coordinates activities outside of the monthly meetings, ex: Shop Hops, etc. to include
collections of workshop and retreat fees.
Treasurer:
1. Shall be custodian of all funds and is an authorized signature on checks.
2. Shall collect all dues and fees, forwards all Homemaker dues receipts to the County Extension
Agent, and distributes membership cards and kits at the time dues are paid.
3. Coordinates with the Secretary to update membership lists.
4. Shall keep an itemized account of all receipts and disbursements.
5. Shall have financial reports available at board and membership meetings.
6. Shall submit an annual Treasure’s report to the County Extension Agent and make arrangement
for an audit by the Extension Office at the end of his/her term of office.
7. Shall provide the Newsletter Editor with a month income and expense report and informs the
Newsletter Editor of all new members.
STITCHER’S WORKSHOP RULES/GUIDELINES
1. Minimum number of members signed up and paid 14 days prior to workshop will be 10. Maximum number
of those attending will be at the discretion of the instructor.
2. Payment for workshops that are taught by guild members will be: $5.00 for a Friday evening and $10.00 for a
Saturday workshop. This cost will assist in paying for food provided as well as to help cover the cost of instructor. The board has the authority to adjust these costs if deemed necessary to meet budget requirements and any
cost of materials that may be associated with the workshop, ex: a kit or specific supplies.
3. Cancellation must be provided to the 2nd Vice President 7 days prior to workshop in order to receive a refund.
This notification may be provided by either email, letter, text or phone call. The 2nd VP is responsible for maintaining the roster of those attending and will coordinate with the Treasurer for any refunds that will be due.
4. In the case a workshop does not meet minimum attendance requirement of 10 the workshop will be cancelled
and the room will be open to all members of the Stitcher’s Quilt Guild for a UFO workshop. Members will be notified of this via email by 2VP.
