Our dear Roni has left & we need someone to help out at the New Comers table. All you need is a welcoming friendly smile & be willing to help someone new to our club. If interested please email Bronnie [email protected] MAH JONG Anyone !!! Every Tuesday morning from 10:00 to 12:00 you can hear the ladies calling out 4 Bamboo, East Wind, 9 character and Green Dragon. What does this mean? This is Mah Jong the game of Chinese Tiles. You will begin with the “twittering of the sparrows” and then build the Great Wall of China. Then a roll of the dice will tell where the wall is “broken” and the dealing of the tiles begins. It is a game of chance and a game of skill, as you select a game plan that will afford you the best chance of winning. Come along to Norfolk Mansion (17 Ly Tu Trong St. D1) on the second floor, poolside and have a cup of tea or coffee. The fee to play is only 35,000vnd. We play a Western version of Mah Jong with set hands that we find in our Mah Jong Player’s Companion guidebook. The ladies are a welcoming group and always eager to teach the newbies the game that we have come to love. We even wave to the bridge players at the next table and often the two groups join each other for lunch after the games. Roni ILV is currently trying to fill the volunteer roster for the reception desk at ILV coffee mornings Volunteering on the reception desk could not be easier. *Full training will be given, but all you really need at this table is a friendly face. All we are asking is for ladies to help at maybe one coffee morning a month - the more volunteers the less you will be needed! Would you like to help? Please contact Jennifer at [email protected] & she will work with you over available dates. Thank you in advance! Can you name the lady in the picture? Hint: She is Swedish. For many years now our very own Sherry Groen, with the help of others has been a angel walking in our midst's! She will very modestly tell you that she has done nothing special & is quick to give others credit they deserve for helping as well, but if you ask me she is an angel! Who once a week invites older girls from the Be Tho Orphanage to her home, where she shares sewing & quilting techniques with them. Helping them learn a skill & how to market it, so they may in turn make a living from it & teach others. Sherry came into ILV on June 6, bringing some of these beautiful hand made quilts with her, which she also helps to sell & takes orders for. She makes nothing from this but the knowledge that when she leaves Vietnam she will have done something to help another. So if you are interested in a Quilt give Sherry call or look for her at the Bazaar coming up on Nov 7. I can personally tell you that they are very reasonably priced & the quality is superb! Thanks to Sherry for coming in & bring the quilts! (please read next month’s newsletter for more on Sherry’s Quilts) Evening ILV welcomed Richard Di San Marzano who presented at our EILV on June 8 He is the curator of The “Dogma” Collection. Owning more then a thousand original pieces. Many of them being Vietnamese propaganda art, helping to preserve an important piece of Vietnamese history. Everyone who was there was excited to have him come and speak. We truly enjoyed his presentation. Thanks to Richard for coming! If you missed it you can visit his webpage at www.dogma collection.com Quiz night June 8 was held at the InterContinental Residence Lounge, The teams scores were close, but alas Sherry and Henry Groen’s team came out on top. Congratulations! Great food! Great drink! Great Fun! Suzanne *Thank you to everyone who organized this great event, and for those who were unable to make it, we look forward to having you join us next time! Page 5 ILV NEWSLETTER / www.ilv ietnam.com What happened this summer at ILV Japanese Calligraphy June 20 ILV was excited to have the Japanese Calligraphy group (being taught by Yoko) come and give a demonstration on what they had learned. Yoko and Kim were an excellent team explaining all about it. We were very impressed with the all Yoko’s students had learnt in such a short time. One lucky ILV lady even won her name, beautifully written in Japanese Calligraphy by the master herself Yoko. Thank you to all that came and put this together to make this a very memorable morning! Peru the land of Incas! On June 27, Janett Lozano did a wonderfully informative talk on her home country of Peru. She said it is frequently referred to as the “Land of the Incas” and contains some of the most spectacular archaeological ruins in Latin America. With it’s wealth of ancient sites and cultures, it is the historical gem of the southern continent. What makes Peru so special is that it has something to offer to every kind of traveller! As for the it’s land of contrast, it consists of three geographical regions: the Andes, the coast and the Jungle. She also brought in things from her home country for everyone to see. It was a wonderful talk and everyone loved it. Thank you Janet! NEW ACTIVITY Vietnamese Cooking Class ILV's own Kim Pham will start Vietnamese Cooking Classes in September! The September 9 class is full, but each month either Kim or another ILV member will teach us how to cook some of Vietnam's favorite dishes. Each class is 200,000VND/person and after we cook the meal, we will sit together and share it. Lemongrass chicken is on the menu for Sept. Signups are going on NOW for the October class. Sign up at the activity desk on Thursday mornings. The classes will be held the first Monday of each month at the Au Lac Hotel, 89 Ho Tung Mau Street, D1. The next class is slated for Oct. 7. Limited places are available each month June 2013 / Vol. 43 Page 6 July 11 Fiona Briers with Brighter Solutions came Fiona came to talk with us about the great work she does with Brighter Solutions. She is the creator of Brighter Solutions, a vocational training company aimed at helping disadvantaged women. By teaching them skills they need to become part of the skilled workforce, and helping them to find job prospects. Their aim is helping the ladies help themselves to become financially stable for the long term. The process helps them to have more self confidence. It was a great talk. Thanks Fiona! To find out more about Brighter Solutions and Fiona: www.inpartnership.org.au/assets/pdf/Stories/Fiona_Briers__Bright_Solutions.pdf A BUS TRIP TO CHO (MARKET) BINH TAY On Aug 7, Carolyn, guided a group through taking a city bus from the Saigon Central Bus Station. “I hope you all have your small change”, she said. “Even a VND 20,000 note is too big”. Pre-warning the group about the necessity of pulling out a VND5,000 note or equivalent before boarding the blue bus. They took the air conditioned bus #1 to their destination at Cholon Bus Station which straddles District 5 & 6. Everyone was impressed with Carolyn’s expertise & knowledge of the buses. Their destination was the end of the line, where they descended into a midst of outlying stalls which surround the central undercover area of Cho Binh Tay wholesale market,. Which sold everything from fruit to fabric The prices here are much cheaper than at the very touristy Ben Thanh Market. Carolyn was the only buyer in the group, her range of Vietnamese shopping language & ‘sock it to em’ attitude left us very envious of her skills. A very big thank you to Carolyn for making this adventure so easy & August 21 ILV took in a movie and lunch We met at The Bitexco tower in D1 around 9:15am. Suzanne and Lisa already had our tickets in hand so that when we got there we had enough time to get a drink & popcorn before going in. The theater was nice, clean and the seats were very roomy. We had the theater to ourselves which was a nice surprise. The ladies picked “The Heat” for us to see. It was very funny and everyone really enjoyed it. After the movie we were able to car pool to the restaurant “The Alpine Lodge” formally the “Swiss Chalet”. It was a soft opening for the restaurant, and had fabulous lunchtime specials for 98,000VD. Everyone had a great time and we can’t wait to see what kind of outings the ladies have planned for us next. Great job ladies!!
