The prophet Amos lived in the eighth century before Christ and, unlike some other prophets, was not a member of the priestly or upper classes. Amos was a simple herdsman sent by God to prophesy against Israel. He was passionate in his love for Israel and was a true patriot. Amos is sent by God to preach against the prevailing attitudes of some of the upper class and wealthier Jews. It seems that these people were using their positions as merchants to cheat the poorer members of society out of what little they did have. The grain merchants would short the people by deliberately making the “ephah” smaller. The “ephah” was the unit of measure(volume) for grain—the merchants cheated the poor by selling them a smaller amount than they thought they were getting. If the grain was sold by weight the scales were “fixed” in the merchant’s favor. The merchants were outwardly “religious” but their religion was for show only. Amos quotes them as longing for the Sabbath to pass so they could get back to their cheating. The law of God called for fairness and justice in all transactions but these merchants were more interested in personal gain. God’s law protected the poor and downtrodden—God’s law mattered to the merchants, but only on the Sabbath. These words from 2,800 years ago challenge us today. We must consider how easily we place our religion, our faith, into a compartment. As followers of Christ, our faith must impact all aspects of our life. When it comes to business transactions are we willing to accept an honest profit or are we out to get everything we can? When we grow past self-serving and pure self-interest we come to a point where we can live in true peace and harmony with the people around us. In and around our parish... Gabriel Project Youth Ministry News On Monday, September 19th, join the Gabriel Project. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth).” LUKE 16:13 th Is money a “god” that you put before God? Giving money to support the Church and other charity is a pillar of our Faith, just like attending Mass every Sunday and participating in parish ministry. Giving money frees us from being a slave to money and increases our dependence on God and to trust that He will provide all that we need.
