CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY ARVADA ALUMNI NEWSLETTER VOLUME 10 ISSUE 1 Winter 2010 GENERAL MEETING DATE: Thursday, March 11, 2010 TIME: 7:00-8:30 pm LOCATION: City Council Chambers 8101 Ralston Road SPEAKERS: Dr. Susan Land and Dr. Nora Bensko TOPIC: An Overview of the Crime Analysis Unit Have you ever seen those crime maps in the Arvada Press, and wondered who tracks and analyzes those weekly pattern crimes? Have you ever wondered how the police analyze crime, crime trends, and crime data to help them identify and capture suspects? Have you ever wondered how the police determine how many officers to staff on each of the shifts? You are in luck! Crime analysis is an important function in today’s modern policing. Crime analysts utilize raw crime data to generate statistics, analysis, and pattern information that assists the Police Department in several ways to include deployment strategies, planning, and major cases, just to name a few. Susan Land and Nora Bensko, “the Doctors,” make up the Crime Analysis unit at the Arvada Police Department. Come listen and be amazed at the data analysis, technology, and “behind the scenes” capabilities this important unit uses to help police find the bad guys, and make the community safer. Editors: Sgt. A.J. DeAndrea Hello, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the CPAAA. I'm Sergeant A.J. DeAndrea, a 17 year veteran of the Arvada, Colorado Police Department. I am currently assigned to Internal Affairs in the Office of the Chief. I also serve as the Team Leader for the Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team, which I have been a member of for the last 14 years. I am a certified Explosive Breacher, Master Less Lethal Instructor and a Colorado POST certified instructor for the Jefferson County Law Enforcement Training Academy and the Red Rocks Community College Law Enforcement Academy. I teach Officer Survival, Building Searches, Rapid and Immediate Deployment (RAID), SWAT, Defensive Tactics and Firearms as well as many other disciplines. I attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and have a Bachelor of Arts Degree. I have received 5 Medals for Valor, 2 Medals for Distinguished Service, 2 Medals for Meritorious Service, 2 unit citations and numerous commendations. In 2006/2007, 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 I was honored as the “Police Officer of the Year” through the Primo Awards. In 2007 I also received an Honorable Mention for Police Officer of the Year through the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Parade Magazine. I have instructed all over the United States including at the IACP Annual Conference and the Police Improvement Facility in Bramshill, United Kingdom. I was an Entry Team Leader at Columbine High School and a Team Leader during the Bulldozer Incident in Granby, Colorado. I helped devise and execute the tactical plan for the Hostage Rescue at Platte Canyon High School in September, 2006. Again in 2006 I was the Team Leader during an Officer Rescue where over thirty rounds were fired. The officer was rescued without injury while the suspect was shot by SWAT. Most recently I was the Patrol Supervisor and Entry Team Leader during the Youth With a Mission (YWAM) shootings. This was an active shooting at a youth mission training center where four young adults were shot, two of which died. I have a very busy career, doing a job which I am very passionate about. I look forward to meeting all of you and working with CPAAA. Sgt. A. J. This year's event went more smoothly than in the past due to a modified procedure with individual assignments and a single line. We utilized 2 car movers, 2 "vacuumers", 4 at the wet station and 4 dry wipe down and interior windows. We would like to get two more volunteers next time and add a fourth station to clean the exterior windows. We did an outstanding job of detailing all 31 available vehicles. This allowed a short couple of minutes between each car to get to know each other a little better. Thanks to all that were able to help. We had one volunteer (John) from the current CPA class that joined us so we had a total of 14. A special recognition to Team # 2 who receives the "awesome job" traveling trophy by barely nudging out Team #3. Team #1 (me), as usual, needs to step it up a bit. I think this was the most complete job of detailing we've done in years! As special thanks, each participant received a personal note from Chief Wick. - submitted by Gary Busch CPAAA Car Detailing Volunteers Who are these women and what are they doing? Come to the General Meeting, Thursday, March 11th and find out! CPAAA NEWSLETTER WINTER 2010 Page 5 MORE CPAAA ACTIVITIES CPAAA Volunteers Help Make Shred-a-thon Successful th Fourteen volunteers from the CPAAA attended the Shred-a-thon held on October 24 at the Arvada Center. There were 4 shredding trucks and an extra truck for cardboard. The volunteers helped unload the boxes and carry them to the shredder trucks. Everybody was kept busy with a continual flow of traffic. The weather was great; it was a wonderful fall day. The event was a success due to the efforts of all the volunteers. The donations for Arvada Police Department’s Explorer Scholarship Program and Arvada Community Foodbank were in excess of $4,000.00. Thanks to all of the CPAAA volunteers who participated in this event. - submitted by Lloyd Ferguson CPAAA NEWSLETTER WINTER 2010 Page 6 AND MORE . . . CLASS . FALL, 2009, CPAAA GRADUATING Fall CPA Graduates Twenty-Two On November 4, 2009, the Arvada Police Department graduated twenty-two members from the fall Citizen Police Academy. Graduates will carry with them memories of an overall view of the inner workings of city law enforcement. During the ten-week course they had hands-on experiences with a fully equipped squad car and an officer who explained each piece of equipment in the vehicle and what it is used for. They were also introduced to the 911 area, the courts system, the bomb squad, animal control, etc. The final class included an exhibition by the K-9 unit, usually the Academy members’ favorite segment. Class photos were taken, and the Department furnished a full sheet cake with a detailed police badge replicated on it. Five Citizen Police Academy Arvada Alumni members, Gary and Cheryl Busch, Normalee Lee, and George and Leona Rude furnished snacks as well. The CPAAA members were present to invite the graduates to join their volunteer support group. Gary Busch gave a PowerPoint presentation to show what some of the members do to assist police personnel. The presentation, which included random shots of the students during their classes, was put together by Busch, CPAAA Board Member-at-large and Lloyd Ferguson, CPAAA Vice-Chairman. After class the cake was served, and students were encouraged to ask questions about membership. The two citizen academies, Spring and Fall of 2009, yielded twenty-one new members for CPAAA. - submitted by Leona Rude Fall 2009 CPA Graduating Class CPAAA NEWSLETTER WINTER 2010 Page 7 MURDER MYSTERY DINNER A SUCCESSSSSS . . . . What do a) a delicious buffet meal followed by to-die-for cake, b) a roomful of chatty super sleuths searching for clues, and c) a snake . . . have in common? The CPAAA's Ninth Annual Mystery Dinner, of course. Distinguished guests included: Chief Don Wick and his wife Chery; Deputy Chief Lynn Johnson and his wife, M.J. Menendez; Deputy Chief Gary Creager and his wife Karen. On October 22, Sgt. Jeff Monzingo and his partner in crime scenes, Judy Slivensky, outdid themselves by painstakingly creating this year's exhibit at the Indian Tree Golf Course Club House. Lots of scenarios were bantered about, but in the end, the fictitious female casualty was the victim of a venomous viper. Case closed. The evening was filled with mystery-solving conversations and laughter while waiting to hear if the number being called out would match your free ticket that you got when you first arrived. Then you got to pick something from the generous assortment of donated items. Everyone could go home a winner. Also, Sgt. Monzingo was presented with a special gift in recognition and appreciation for his outstanding work as the department liaison to both the Citizens Police Academy and CPAAA. He will be missed! Anyone who could not make it to this year's dinner should seriously consider attending next year - you won't regret it - hope to see you there! - submitted by Judy Kuester CPAAA NEWSLETTER WINTER 2010 Page 8 CPAAA Well Represented At PD Awards Ceremony By Normalee Lee CPAAA provided refreshments for officers and guests at the Officer Awards Ceremony on Dec. 9, 2009. We furnished small bottles of water, multi-colored yummy mints and delicious cream puffs. Our bright CPAAA banner looked great on the wall behind the refreshment table. We gave out gold and blue balloons to the children in attendance. A few of the balloons got away and floated out of reach. However, the nearby high school students practicing basketball were creative and worked together to get the “floaters”. You're never too old to enjoy a balloon. Leona and George Rude, Marilynn Maring and Deb Hamilton passed out programs. Joan Campbell and Marilynn helped set up the table. We had many positive comments about the great refreshments. Guests also thanked us for our support. L- Leona Rude and Marilynn Maring handed out programs. Joan Campbell and George Rude assisted with refreshments.
