Christmas Concert
We had a great time at our Christmas concert. Before our concert, the Manning Fiddle Club
and the Tri-School Band kept the audience entertained. To start our show, we heard from the
Junior Band and Mini Fiddlers, followed by the grade one and two violinists. The
kindergarten then sang Christmas songs with the grade one class while Ms. Robinson played
guitar. When grade four came up to the stage they played “Let it Go” on the chimes and sang
too. They also recited a poem about their stockings. Expertly, the grade fives acted out a
play called “Santa and the Presents,” and at the end of their play they played a song on their
instruments. Also playing their instruments, grade six did “Sea Shanty Christmas” before
they sang “That’s Christmas To Me.” After grade six, the grade three class
acted out an amazing play. Finally, the whole school rose to their feet and
performed a line-dance to “Run Run Rudolph” by Luke Bryan.

Family Fun Night
Family Fun Night was a blast! Every family that attended got a gift bag.
There was a crafts table, a snack table, a photo booth, a hula-hooping centre,
and The Tree of Gratitude in the gym. If you didn’t want to hang around in the
gym you could play board games in the foyer or read a book in the library.
There was also a bingo card you could fill in and put in a draw. At the end, a
police officer drew some names and six people won a prize.

Christmas Hampers
Amazingly, MES has brought an abundance of items for
the Christmas hamper including DVDs, canned food,
Kraft Dinner, toys, books, and cake mix. These items will
be put into a bus and sorted out at the Ag Hall. Before
Christmas, the gifts will go to people who don’t have
enough money for toys or food. Because we are putting
all of the Christmas Hamper items in a bus, the program is
called “Stuff the Bus, and is sponsored by the Manning Comets, Paul
Rowe, and MES.
Competing to bring in the most food items, MES students from grades
1-6 brought 1046 items altogether. The winners were grades 3 and 5
with 272 items each. It was the first time in MES history that we
have had a tie.
The Christmas Hamper program has enough food for “Stuff the Bus.”
We are truly happy to give our food to people who cannot buy or
afford food or toys.

Book Fair
Mrs. Matheson organized a book fair at Manning Elementary School to raise money for the
library to get more books. By the end of the book fair, we raised $1129.08. There were a lot
of supplies that included pencils erasers, pens, and sharpeners. Some of the types of books
were Diary of a Wimpy Kid, books about wildlife, and books about hockey super stars.
Books are a great thing to sell. Some of our students won golden tickets in a draw, and they
got to choose $5 worth of books to take home! Mrs. Matheson wants us to read so that we
can get smarter.

White to Red
Our grade 5 class is organizing the “White to
Red” campaign. We are raising money for
Ronald MacDonald House. To do this, the
students are selling tags for our tree. The tags
are $2.00 each. We are trying to raise
$300.00. So far, they have sold 168 tags.
In the Ronald MacDonald house in Grande
Prairie, there are thirty-two bedrooms. The
average stay is two weeks. The longest time a
family has ever stayed in the Ronald MacDonald house is two years.

New
Playground
At MES, the grade 4-6 playground
was
opened
on
Wednesday,
November 26th. There is a zipline,
an X-rider, and swings. The grades
4, 5, and 6 classes think the
playground is awesome. Advantage
North and Warren Pharis from Pharis
Farms helped to set up the
playground. Last year’s grade 4, 5,
and 6 students voted on which
equipment to have. The money came
from the Foundation, and was raised
by parents who worked at the casino.
Thank you to everyone who helped!

January’s Tip for Parents:
Encourage Critical Thinking – Critical thinking is the
ability to think clearly and rationally and is important to a
child’s development.
How can you help? Assist with homework, but make sure
that you’re not doing it for them. Your role is to help your
child succeed in school by asking questions, giving
examples, and assisting him in learning concepts.

The responses collected in the survey are
provided to and reviewed by all school staff, the
board of trustees and the Alberta Government so
that we can learn what is working in schools and
what needs improvement. Your answers to the
questions on the survey will be considered in
school and divisional planning and therefore will
have a direct impact on your child’s educational
experience. This important annual survey
provides you with another way to be involved in
decision making at your child’s school.
The survey is mailed to parents in grades 4, 7 and
10 (unless the school has fewer than 120 students
in grades 4-12 in which case the survey will be
expanded to include all students and parents). To
ensure we receive as many responses back from
parents as possible, the survey comes with a
postage paid return envelope.
Thank you in advance for your time spent in
completing the survey. Through working and
learning together, your input and involvement
makes our schools great places to grow, learn and
be.
