Hopefully you’ve all made your plans and will be there for the fun. We’ve had to make one change to the judging panel, and Jesper Ravn has been replaced as our Sweepstakes judge with Stefan Ernstsson from Sweden (Impeccable Puli). You’ll note a message from Jane Slade-Exum in this issue of Puli News in regard to Rescue. The PCA Rescue Trust has placed 15 Pulik to date in 2012, and we currently are awaiting information on a 9 month old in FL that will most likely be coming thru shortly. All of these are pure bred dogs; some imports, some puppy mill dogs, and some from previous PCA member/breeders. Rescue is hard, sometimes heartbreaking work, but nothing can replace the feeling of a successful rescue where a sad, unhappy dog finds a new home filled with love. Fran Levinson has resigned from the Rescue Trust and we need to acknowledge the work and effort that she has put into the job over the past few years. It is a high stress job that requires dedication and heart. Anyone interested in volunteering their time should get in touch with myself or Jane Slade Exum. The Board is still in the process of re-working the Breeder’s List and hopes to have a new plan in place shortly. We appreciate your patience as we try to improve our method of communicating with the public and at the same time, maintaining the high standard of the PCA. See you all in WI. They have asked each club to submit a 600-700 word article including a history of the breed, an explanation of the breed’s form and function, selecting a puppy, ownership requirements and special needs of the breed (exercise, grooming, etc), health, and AKC events in which the breed may participate. Barbe has asked the Judges Education committee to take on this task. Respectfully submitted, Dodie Atkins, Recording Secretary information on the color of Pulik, including Black and Tan, Apricot, and White [ including pedigrees of old Whites ]. This information comes from old articles and old letters. IN addition, there will be a notebook chronicling the Beltsville Pulik. Check at the Show and at the Hotel ! October PULI NEWS DEADLINE - September 30, 2012 Puli News - August 2012, Page 3 Corresponding Secretary Report from the Corresponding Secretary as of 7/31/12. The main events in my life since June have been mailing out the ballots for the first tier, and now the second tier to elect the judge for our Puli National Specialty in 2015. All voting members were sent a first set allowing them to choose from any of the AKC judges qualified to judge Pulis and the Herding group. Our semifinalists are as follows: Michelle Billings, David Bolus, Dana Cline, Terry DiPietro, Irma Fertl, Joseph Gregory, Pat Hastings, Carolyn Herbel, Art Sorkin, James Studebaker, and Marjorie Tuff. A reminder to all voting members that all ballots must be mailed (to me) and postmarked on or before Septem- ber 1, 2012. Also please be sure to mail the ballots according to the instructions: several members are sending ballots alone in the outside envelope, and/or enclosing 2 envelopes with ballots in the same outside envelope. Those ballots won’t count. This last set of ballots will be counted at the Specialty in Wisconsin. Another item of interest is the AKC Eukanuba Dog Show medallions. In the past we have only ordered one each for Conformation, Obedience and Agility. This year AKC has made it different: they will be offered to Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog & Bitch, and Best Bred by Exhibitor. Plus: one each for Agility and Obedience. We hope to have enough entries to be awarded these medallions. I have been receiving a lot of inquiries for Puli Puppies. More than I need to list here on this report. With the elimination of the Breeders Listings on our website and in Puli News, all inquiries now come to me by email. I then forward them on by email to those on the PCA breeders list. Some inquiries have also come from individuals interesting in an older puppy or younger adult such as from a breeder with perhaps an extra dog or two. We eventually will have a new list on our website of Mentors: those people who may help with inquiries about buying a new puppy, questions about the breed, and advice on how to get involved with obedience, agility and conformation. Respectfully submitted, Fran Levinson Corresponding Secretary. PCA. A reminder from our Trophy Chairperson, Bette Tannen: I would like to remind all exhibitors that if they plan to take a trophy home from the National, they need to bring their checkbooks. We have instituted a policy where to take a trophy home from the Specialty, the winner must leave a check in an amount to replace the trophy if it is not returned. This deposit will be refunded when the trophy is returned. I am hoping that the trophy arrives in the same condition that it was in when it left. Puli News - August 2012, Page 7 Gooseberry Hill Zeus Choobee “Choobee” June 16, 1996—July 28, 2012 Choobee was owned and loved by Arlene and Jon Miller Our dear Choobee left us yesterday after whimpering most of the night, even with pain meds. Jon and Lucy with Angie looking on, kept him company until he finally fell asleep at 4:30 am. It was his time to move on. Choobee’s sire was Susan Maass’s Gooseberry Hill champion “Murphy” and his mom was Gooseberry Hill Very Purdy, our 3 year old. Ever since Choobee was born in our kitchen, with Jon and me helping, he loved to be held over my shoulder like a baby. Even in his final days when I carried him up and down the stairs to go out, he was totally relaxed in my arms. Jon thought he was the most beautiful of the litter and we chose him and he chose us. Our young son, Jonah, named him Choobee after the Korean Karate word “Choombie” meaning “ready for action” because he always was athletic. He was so sweet, trusting, energetic and smart. When we were packing to go to Keystone for the weekend, and “Car Talk” was on the radio, he would run outside and stand by the car until we let him in the car and finished packing. He was always ready to go where ever we went, and “Car Talk” was his cue that we were going to Keystone. When Choobee was around 2 years old, he broke the lock on our front screen door trying to go with us. After that in the summer we had to be careful not to have the front door open with just the screen door because he would just push the latch, open the screen door, and go outside on his own. We don’t have a fenced yard. Once, when we had arrived at a condo in Keystone around dinner time, we left Purdy and Choobee in the condo and went to have dinner. The door of the condo has a handle that you push down to open. When we came back, Choobee was outside on the deck while Purdy was inside looking out the patio window at him. Choobee had opened the front door, made his way through another door, and gone outside to wait for us on the deck since we often went in and out the condo via the patio door. From then on, we brought his kennel with us when we went to Keystone. Jon’s father came to visit once, and walked a young Choobee the 1/4 mile to the mailbox. He fell in love with him and was shocked at how alert and responsive Choobee was. He was friendly to all people, especially children. He always let children pet him and tried to lick their faces. But he was very assertive with other dogs. We live in the mountains, so we took him for walks off leash until we saw another dog, then we called him back and put his leash on. He was assertive, but if off leash and a dog came at him, he would put his tail between his legs and run away. He never got in a dog fight or hurt another dog. In his later life, he enjoyed trips to the Apple Store and to McGuckins Hardware Store where people always wanted to pet him, especially children. He was always a gentle dog. The only time he was good with other dogs was at dog shows when he was showing. At the Specialty in Oregon in 1997, he was Reserve Winners Dog with Susan Maass handling him. I ws never very good at showing, but he really shined with an expert handler. I had to stop showing Choobee because he was allergic to grass and scratched or chewed off his cords. We had to be careful not to let him go into the horse pen where he loved to eat grassy poop His cords never grew longer than when he won Reserve Winners Dog. Every spring we had to give him Benadryl for the allergy, which helped but his cords still never grew past his belly. Choobee was a great jumper—he often jumped over the back of the couch, in either direction, when he wanted to go somewhere with us. He also liked going down the slide on the jungle gym in the backyard with Jonah. He would have been great at agility, but I didn’t have time to train while I was raising my son. When Choobee was born, Jonah was 7 years old. From the time Choobee was around 2, when Jonah needed to get up for school, I would say “Choobee, wake-up call” and Choobee would run into Jonah’s room and jump on top of Jonah and lick his face. That was Choobee’s job and he took it very seriously. In school Jonah learned to play jazz trombone—a very loud instrument. It hurt Choobee’s ears. Before Jonah started practicing, we would say “Trombone!” and Choobee would run into the bedroom and put his pawas over his ears. Choobee was always extremely clever. He would play tricks on us, making us get up to take him out when he wanted more food. He spent a lot of time on his couch which he was happy to share with us and cuddle. When Choobee was 13, his mom, Purdy, passed away and he was very lonely. We took him with us as much as we could, and I started looking for another Puli. We took him to a dog show to see how he reacted to a mature female Puli that we were considering. He was assertive toward her, so we decided we needed to get a puppy. He did like seeing all the other dogs there, if they weren’t going to move in. A few months later we introduced him to 10 week old Lucy (Bowmaker Lucy in the Sky) in our driveway. Choobee was totally happy to have Lucy around to keep him company, although he was too old to play, despite the fact that she was always trying to get him to play with her, which he ignored. Even in the last week, when Choobee was sleeping most of the time, Lucy put her rope toy on his back or by his nose. Choobee ws the watch dog of the house until he got considerably older. He didn’t bark much except when he notified us that someone had walked by the house on the street or drove up our driveway. We all miss Choobee, especially Jon. Choobee chose Jon as his person and was totally loyal to him. Choobee we love you. Puli News - August 2012, Page 8 Fran Levinson received this letter recently from a gal who owns Pulis and just needed to share her love for one of her Pulis she had just lost. Hi Fran, I'm just writing because yesterday we had to let Ancsa go. She had been suffering from a spleenic tumor and it was time. I wanted to write a little bit to you because Pulis (Pulik) are, to me, so unique and special dogs that it would help me to say a little bit about her to you -- someone who knows and loves the breed. I hope that you don't mind. I'm home from work today and my heart is heavy and I think that this would help. Ancsa came about because of Bela, our white Puli, born in 2000. He lived with me in Hoboken, NJ and he worked in my office and in the classroom when I was teaching at Stevens Inst Tech. He basically got a master's degree in oceanography. (He's a smart dog). Then he moved with me to Key West, and again worked in my laboratory as we studied rust (not so exciting). The we moved to St. Augustine and he manned the phones as I consulted from home (we needed to buy a velcro phone). In the meantime, I got married, went sailing (Bela LOVED sailing) and had a great time. Then I got a "real job" in an office in Jacksonville. Bela really protested because he couldn't go into the office with me. This was new for him. He filed a lot of grievances. So, Stephan and I decided that maybe, just maybe, he'd enjoy having another Puli to hang out with while we were out earning money to keep him in the lifestyle to which he was accustomed. (All Hungarians are royalty). And one day, Stephan and I went to the Ancient City Arts and Crafts Festival in a field behind our home in St. Augustine. Of course, Bela went with us. And of course, we barely got to see anything because the Puli surpassed any of the art there. After answering a million questions, one woman said, "Oh, there is a Puli for adoption at the edge of the field over there." I'm not sure what happened next because I tackled her as I went sprinting across the field. And 1/2 hour later we had Ancsa. She came with her name. I had to call my mother (who is from Hungary) to ask her how to pronounce it. Her name is Annie. Anyway, Ancsa was about 23 lbs, skin and bones and completely shaved. The paperwork that she came with said that she had, "No Play Instinct". They were right. I'd never seen anything like it. So, then I did the only thing that I knew which was that Pulis like to be hugged. She just sort of hung out in my lap for several weeks. This poor girl would poop at the drop of a hat when something startled her, she had never ridden in a car, she couldn't go up stairs, she had had puppies -- I think you get the picture. She was so so sad. So I just kept hugging her and talking to her. That was in April. In November she cracked a smile. We were travelling up to Montreal via Ontario and we were at a hotel in Sou St. Marie. Stephan's brother and his wife traveled down from Northern Ontario to meet up and spend time before we headed over to Montreal. We were laughing and having a great time catching up in our hotel room when Ancsa decided that it would be really cool to jump from one bed to the other. And she did. And we all applauded and then she just got the "crazies" and was snorting and hamming it up, all the time checking us out from the corner of her eye to see our reaction to her antics. And so from that evening on, she decided that it would be fun to make us laugh. We spend a winter in Montreal and then went back to Florida that spring. During that winter, Ancsa, Bela, Stephan and I took long hikes up Mont Royal and had a wonderful time. When we got back home to Florida, Ancsa had bloomed into a dog who realized that people weren't all that bad, and were sort of fun. AND, toys were A LOT of fun. Her transformation was amazing. Seeing her come into her true character was so gratifying and heartwarming. It is at this time, too, that I realized that Pulis must indeed be a special breed. Bela is a really cool dog because, well, I raised him :) -- he spent so much of his time among people, at work, in the classroom, at dinner, in the supermarket (Key West is very very liberal) -- he just loves everyone. There is a coffee shop in Jacksonville that welcomes dogs and I bring Bela. He'll just lie on the floor and watch everyone. He'll go over to people when invited. When small children approach him, he lies down to be at their level (size). So, he's just an all around cool guy. Ancsa, on the other hand, had a spirit that she kept way down within her. She always had it. It just needed to be coaxed out. The transformation in her was stunning. She loved life. She'd wake up and squeek her toys and throw herself on her back to kick her feet into the air and make all sorts of fun noises to let you know that, "wow! it's another great day!" She went from being so sad to being so full of life and to have such an amazing connection with humans. That was inherent within her. It wasn't learned. It was who she is. It was her spirit. Whatever these Pulis carry inside of them, it is very very special. That I witnessed this transformation -- I am so grateful. Anyway, Fran, I'm sorry for taking so much of your time, but writing this down to you has help make me feel better. I just loved Ancsa so much and I am so glad that I had six good years with her. —Kelly Kelly thinks that Ancsa was 11 or 12 when they had to let her go. Kelly and her husband are pursuing membership in PCA. Many are worried that there will be finger pointing if results are posted. Many are concerned that certain lines are “ tainted “. Let us try to look at this in a reasonable, non-emotional, objective way. During the wars in Europe, the Puli Breed was decimated. Thankfully there were those to step forward and reclaim the Breed from the few Pulik left. From those offspring we arrived at the Breed today. That means we are pretty much ALL RELATED. That also means this disease has the chance to show up in ALL OUR LINES. [ and I emphasize ALL ] We must be aware of the results in order to make sensible choices in our breeding plans. WE CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT ELIMINATE THOSE WHO ARE NOT CLEAR. We just need to use them sensibly. Putting our head in the sand is not an option. Right now we are running about 70% clear, 24% carriers and 7% at risk/affected. We CAN get a grip on this and get these numbers down. Fear is not a useful tool in breeding. As to results, all normal results are posted as evidenced by the statement on the order form for the DM Test. [ read below ] AtRisk, Affected or Carrier information is only released if you authorize it. Actually, there is no reason not to release the information, you are not gaining anonymity. If you are not listed as clear………………………………………. Remember , you are not at fault if your dog tests as being a carrier or as at risk/affected. This is the hand you were dealt. However you can shape the breed’s future. Finger pointing is churlish and juvenile. AND it will come back to bite you, especially when dealing with genetics. Be aware and truthful with your own breeding program and leave others to theirs. Please take note: the following is from the order form for the DM Test. “Release Authorization All Normal results will be released into the open database and will be published on the OFA website by default. By ordering this test, I hereby authorize the OFA to release Normal results. There is no exception to this policy. At-Risk, Affected, or Carrier results will only be released into the open database if the box below is checked. I authorize: By checking the At-Risk, Affected, or Carrier Open Database Release Authorization above, I hereby authorize the OFA to release any At-Risk, Affected, or Carrier results for this dog into the open database. Results released into the open database will be in the public domain and will be published on the OFA website.” OFA Contact Information and Guidelines In order to be assigned a CHIC number Your Puli must have some form of permanent identification [ Tattoo or Micro-chip ]. Corneal Dystrophy- epithelial/stromal A non-inflammatory corneal opacity (white to gray) present in one or more of the corneal layers. Corneal dystrophy implies a probable inherited basis and is usually bilateral. B. Persistent pupillary membranes (PPM) Persistent blood vessel remnants in the anterior chamber of the eye which fail to regress normally in the neonatal period. These strands may bridge from iris to iris, iris to cornea, iris to lens, or from sheets of tissue in the anterior chamber. The last three forms pose the greatest threat to vision and when severe, vision impairment or blindness may occur. C. Cataract A partial or complete opacity of the lens and/or its capsule. In cases where cataracts are complete and affect both eyes, blindness results. The prudent approach is to assume cataracts to be hereditary except in cases known to be associated with trauma, other causes of ocular inflammation, specific metabolic diseases, persistent pupillary membrane, persistent hyaloid or nutritional deficiencies. Cataracts may involve the lens completely (diffuse) or in a localized region. D. E. Persistent hyaloid artery (PHA) - congenital defect resulting from abnormalities in the development and regression of the hyaloid artery. The blood vessel remnant can be present in the vitreous as a small patent vascular strand (PHA) or as a non-vascular strand that appears gray-white (persistent hyaloid remnant). Retinal dysplasia-folds Linear, triangular, curved or curvilinear foci of retinal folding that may be single or multiple. When seen in puppies, this condition may partially or completely resolve with maturity. Its significance to vision is unknown. There are two other forms of retinal dysplasia (geographic, detached) which are known to be inherited In other breeds and, in their most severe form, cause blindness. The genetic relationship between folds and more forms of retinal dysplasia is undetermined severe. References There are no references providing detailed descriptions of hereditary ocular conditions of the Pull breed. The conditions listed above are generally recognized to existin the breed, as evidenced by identification on breed eye screening examinations and/ or clinical experience of veterinary ophthalmologists. 1. These are birth defects that result in the failure of the roof of the lip and/or mouth to properly form during development. Puppies born with these defects are often euthanized due to the amount of time and money required to care for them. In order to study these defects and develop a genetic test to prevent them, we are in need of DNA samples. We are asking for the cooperation of your breed club through the distribution of the attached flyer to your members. We would greatly appreciate the participation of your club by getting the word out about our research and encouraging breeders to submit samples. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your time and we look forward to working with your breed club. Joe Puli News - August 2012, Page 16 The Board is working on revising the Breeder's List format to be placed back into Puli News and on the PCA website. We have adjusted the previous Guideline language and added the DM test, as well as changed the criteria for listing litters of puppies in PN or on the website. We will open this for discussion at the annual board meeting so if anyone has any input or comment, please either send to my attention in advance or be present at the board meeting in WI to discuss. One word of caution. Be prepared to offer workable solutions if there are areas that you disagree with. Our goal is to make this work as smoothly and efficiently as we can, while preserving the integrity and future of the breed. Proposed Revision to Breeder’s List Guidelines: PULI CLUB OF AMERICA Thank you for your interest in joining the 2013 Puli Club of America Breeder Directory. The requirements for the directory have changed as of 2012. We require a current, signed copy of the Puli Club of America Guidelines for Owners/Breeders/Exhibitors, and a PCA Breeder Directory Agreement. The Breeder Directory will be published on the PCA website and your information will be included unless you request that it not be on line. You may add litters to your personal PCA Breeder’s web listing which will appear in Puli News, or remove them at any time during the year by emailing_________________________ CHIC numbers (or the passing results on the four CHIC tests), must be sent in for the dam and sire when you list puppies available on your web listing. Please ensure that a current CERF date (within 36 months is on the site or proof is available. The registered names of the dam and sire, CHIC numbers and DOB of the puppies are required, as always but will not be listed on the website. Listing puppies and/or dogs (adult Pulik available) is intended to save both buyer and breeder from the frustration of calls to those who do not have dogs to sell. We will remove the puppy/adult listing after four (4) months. The requirements of the PCA Breeder directory are: A signed Breeder Directory Agreement. A signed PCA Guidelines for Owners/Breeders/Exhibitors dated in the current year. You sign it each year when you renew your dues. Please submit a copy with payment for your listing, and initial each page and sign the last page where indicated. You must have been a member in good standing of PCA for 36 months. The following four health tests: CERF (within 12 months), OFA patellas; OFA hips with a passing grade; DM, for the sire and dam of the puppies you are placing. You pledge that these tests have been done on the parents of any puppy sold through PCA Breeder Directory. We know breeders do many tests and PCA breeders are more responsible and more aware of health issues than pet stores, internet breeders and backyard breeders. We want to make it as simple as possible while maintaining the high standards of the PCA. You must use a contract incorporating the statutory terms and conditions of the State of Sale for any puppy or adult sold through PCA Breeder Directory. It makes clear the obligations and rights of the buyer and the breeder and will hopefully save you misunderstandings in the future. A flexible return policy. We know many of you have complex guarantees, especially with show prospects. AKC Registration policy. We know this varies with individuals, so it is broad enough to not restrict your personal policy in this regard. As an AKC Parent Club, some policy and notice should be stated. An education paragraph. Most breeders spend uncounted hours patiently explaining, instructing, answering questions, and supporting puppy buyers. Educated buyers will provide better homes for our Pulik. The Puli Club of America needs the public to find a warm welcome and a positive approach. The PCA Breeder Directory is a service to you, the members, to the public, and to the breed we all love. We hope it will be a valuable one. TO JOIN: Send a signed, initialed, and dated PCA Guidelines for Owners/Breeders/Exhibitors with a signed, initialed and dated Breeder Directory Agreement with a check for $50 made payable to the Puli Club of America by mail to: Chairman, PCA Breeder Directory Address Phone number Email address You will receive confirmation of receipt of all the requirements. Please let us know if you have any questions. Puli News - August 2012, Page 17 THE EXPLODING LIFE OF RESCUE He’s 8 years old and been in a crate most of his life, has arthritis and a bladder infection and hasn’t been to the vet in a long time. She’s 11, has a horrible ear infection, a bladder infection and is desperate for attention. Their family is losing their house, they have no money for the dogs. He’s 12, totally confused, wondering where is the man that’s always taken care of him? He’s in a hospital probably not coming back home, his children can only stay two more days and don’t want the dog, they make a call. He’s only five, been a really good dog but one day two new puppies came in the door and they don’t want him anymore. These are but three of the stories we have heard this year. Puli Rescue is being inundated with dogs. In our history, we have never faced so many dogs being abandoned, mistreated and basically thrown away. Certainly, this economy is a contributing factor. We have had families who have lost their homes being forced to give up their dogs to us. How horrible that choice must be for them but at least they know that there is some place that can take their dogs and find them a new forever home. Puli Rescue has taken in far more dogs in far worse shape than we have ever had. Almost all the dogs we are taking in need extensive veterinary care. Due to the economy, most of the families giving up their dogs have not been able to afford even basic care. Some people are still supporting breeders - basically puppy mills - by purchasing dogs that are cheaper than those from breeders who care enough about the breed to do proper testing to ensure that the puppy you buy will not suffer from eye, hip or genetic issues. For the first time, our breed is facing the threat of degenerative myelopathy. This horrible disease attacks the spinal cord and over a period of 6 months to a year, the dog will become paraplegic, later incontinent and then will lose control of his front legs. There is a test that can identify the gene for this disease and we can eliminate it from our breed by carefully not breeding two affected dogs. BUT you have to test. The Puli Club of America mandates that this test and several others must be done before you are allowed on our breeders page. It is because of all these factors that we in Puli Rescue are in such trouble. We need funds. For all of you who have a dog and care about that animal, please put yourself in our shoes. Unless we get more money, we will have to start turning Pulis away. Those of us who work with these sad abused, abandoned Pulis cannot imagine having to tell someone who comes to us as a last resort that we cannot help. To raise money, we are starting a Memorial Wall. The Memorial Wall will appear among the pages on the Puli Rescue Website (www.pulirescue.org) Puli News will carry pictures of the entries received for the Wall . We've even made it so that you can use PayPal for your donation. All of us have dogs that have touched us, please help us help all the other dogs who now have no one else to speak for them. —Jane Exum Puli News - August 2012, Page 18 The PULI MEMORIAL WALL We are currently implementing the Memorial Wall. There is a main page for the Wall that will show each PULI that is being memorialized. On this page is a small picture of the Puli with the name (call name) and the birth and death dates for each Puli placed on the wall. For each of these dogs, you are able to click to see additional information about the Puli. We offer three levels of memorial. All levels get a small photo on the main page of the Wall, with name and dates for the dog, the level will determine how much additional information about the dog is displayed on its individual page. We will crop the photo submitted to create the small photo on the main page, a larger version (see the levels) will be displayed on the individual page for the dog. Puli News - August 2012, Page 19 RESCUE ACTIVITY January 2011—August 2012 Each Puli that comes into Rescue is thoroughly examined by a veterinarian and brought up to date on his shots, spayed/neutered if necessary, and treated for any problems the vet finds before the dog is placed. The dog is also temperament tested to ensure that it is place-able. Many of the Pulis must be housed somewhere while a placement is identified — since we have few volunteers to handle these dogs and they are not always located in the vicinity of the dog, many are placed in a kennel until we can place them. We would certainly rather have them in a foster home but without more volunteers the stress and expense of transporting them from their current owner/shelter to a foster home and then transporting them again to their “forever” homes is considered more injurious to the dog than leaving them either in their current home or placing them in a kennel situation until we can place them. Many of the Pulis we are seeing are coming from homes that can hardly afford to feed and house themselves — and certainly do not have the funds to keep their Pulik in good condition. All are purebred but did not come from a breeder who is willing to stand behind their dogs and take them back when the family can no longer care for them (unlike PCA breeders who are very willing to do this). They are imports, from puppy mills, or from a backyard breeder who is breeding to make money from the dogs and not interested in a “good” placement or any follow-up for the Puli. Some come from a situation where their owner is deceased or had to go into a nursing home and the family just wants the dog gone. All need transportation from their current situation to their “forever” home. Look at the following list and you’ll see the challenges of just transporting them. All require some veterinary care (and many come with problems that result in a large vet bill), all need to be temperament-tested, and there are the challenges of keeping them until they are placed. The following dogs came into Rescue and were re-homed (or euthanized) in: 2011 (11 Pulik) Name State originated Jackson Wisconsin Bobby Pennsylvania Whoopie Connecticut Callie New York Jack New York Marley New York Rasta New York Kujo Oregon Kiya Oregon Lola Connecticut Angus New York 2012 (15 so far — but it is only August!) Jackson enjoying his “forever” home with his new mistress: Izzy is currently in a foster home (of a PCA member); she’ll be transported to her “forever”home in Connecticut after the Specialty. Here is what her foster Mom has to say about her — and some cute pictures of her. I (Izzy) am a lovely 6 year old girl originally from Sweden where I was raised with another girl Puli. My owner moved back to the US where I lived in a single dog household. My owner traveled out of town for weeks at a time which made him realize that this was not the life intended for me. Having a quite disposition, I'll gently nudge you for that extra special attention. Walks are a favorite activity for me. I'll stay close to your side with a loose lead in your hand. I do enjoy my long afternoon naps! With proper introduction I will accept other dog friends. I do not get crazy or display overly playful sessions of play. Companionship is what I excel at! As a puli I will protect our home and make you aware of unfamiliar happenings and noises. I promise to be a loving and true friend especially in a more mature family. Jax with his new owner and new friend,a Sheltie — he also has two new cat friends — and some great words from his new owner: Overall in my experience with nurturing dogs, any dogs in general, but in particular those coming from Rescue Groups this has been a very rewarding experience. The challenge of helping these dogs who may have learned somewhat inappropriate responses that their owners did not know how to extinguish or channel into a more favorable response, this motivates me to try harder and to think outside the box when addressing these behaviors. I suggest getting professional assistance for difficult challenges. Don’t forget that you must be patient and give the dog time to demonstrate his or her wants and needs as well and to leave your baggage out of the situation too, if possible? But bring in your learned experience and faith in working with your new friend. Remember, sometimes it is going to take a minute for the dog to learn what it is that works with his new owner. Especially, if the dog has had some pretty traumatic experiences previously. I believe time does heal old wounds and allows love to begin anew so enjoy nurturing and loving your new friend, like I do JAX. It took awhile to get the AKC paperwork cleared up about 40 days. But it is done and it feels great to know that he is my new friend to the end. Puli News - August 2012, Page 21 HUNGARIAN NAMES FOR OUR PULIK As your Puli News Editor, I recently received an unsolicited note from a gentleman who is interested in the breed. He had come across some early ( 1100s ) writings about an early royal family in Hungary which mentioned the Puli and specified the names of two of the dogs and thought we might enjoy seeing the information. His name is Miles Lambert and he is the author of the book 'Tokaji Wine - Fame, Fate, Tradition' (2010), which is readily available from amazon.com (where you will also find information and comments about it). Tokaji (Tokay) is Hungary's most famous wine, though perhaps not as well known generally as the Puli dog. Miles has also provided us with a list of the names that appear in the writing that might be appropriate for our Pulis — including shortened versions that could be used as call names. FIRST — the article in Hungarian: Amikor a Tiszánál farkasszemet nézett Kálmán és Álmos serege, a tizedesek nyíltan megmondták: Az ország népe nem hajlandó butaságból hősi halált halni! Kálmánnak déli győzelmei ellenére nem voltak igaz barátai. A nép többre becsülte Lam "kutyás herceget", megfontolt országvezetését. Kálmán hitt az ősi korona erejében. A sima abroncskorona Urukból került Tuspába és az Álmosház tulajdonába. Később minden király a maga ízlése szerint díszítette. Mindig a legbiztonságosabb helyen: Vasváron őrizték. Lam herceg a saját vagyonával is okosan gazdálkodott. Minden utódának gerendavárat építtetett és még a szeretett pulijainak: Ildunak és Lambinak utódaiból juttatott nekik. And here—the English Translation: When the army of [King] Kálmán and Álmos were looking fixedly at the Tisza [River], the corporals forthrightly said: “The people of the land are not willing to die a heroic death out of stupidity.” The people more greatly esteemed the country’s prudent leadership by Lam, the ‘dog-fancier prince’ [“kutyás herceg”]. Kálmán believed in the power of the ancient crown. The smooth hoop-crown had passed into the possession of Tuspa and the House of Álmos from their lords. Afterward, each king decorated it according to his taste. It was always guarded in the most secure place: Vasvár [fortress]. Only at the end of his life did Kálmán pay heed to the concerned Prince Lam; and [Kálmán] died on February 3, 1116. Prince Lam had him buried in the royal burial ground of Fehévár, beside [King] Saint Stephan and [King] Saint Imre. Later, [Lam] took part in the bear-banquet [“medvetor”] of 1117 on Vasvár hill. His children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren were there. Twelve sons and six daughters had been born. His grandchildren numbered 24. Eight great-grandchildren were also brought to the celebration. When [Lam’s] younger brother Lambert had died [years earlier], Lam had thought that in place of his younger brother he would need to leave behind a fitting number of descendants. Thus, 18 children were born subsequently. The Arvisura-calendar gave the names of his children. Sons were: Bellény, Cucsom, Dernő, Gencs, Imola, Ladány, Rőce, Bolyk, Kelecsény, Csetnek, Uza and Kobéla. His daughters: Almány, Betlér, Gerlice, Gortva, Jόsva and Hisnyό. His grandchildren: Madaras, Derencsény, Dobra, Gόcs, Cikό, Leste, Oskό, Feled, Doma, Bugyik, Lubény, Pozsá-lό, Bebek, Csatό, Okolicsány, Cserencsény, Kökényes, Zsedény, Guszona, Hársika, Pόcsika, Ilon and Tama. His great-grandchildren: Veszverés, Zagrágy, Petne, Berzéte, Bablus, Csépány, Hacsa and Csoltό. Prince Lam managed his own wealth very wisely. He had a timber fort built for each of his descendants, and they even received the offspring of his beloved puli-s, Ildu and Lambi. [Note: the fortress of Vasvár was at the town of Ózd, 70 miles northeast of Budapest and 30 miles north-northwest of Eger, along today’s border with Slovakia.] ________________________________________________________________________ Pronunciation of the names is approximately as follows. I have tried to use familiar English words. In Hungarian, the stress is always on the first syllable. The puli-s: Ildu = ILL-dew / Lambi = LUM-bee Puli News - August 2012, Page 22 Lam’s sons: Bellény = BEL-lain / Csucsom = CHOO-chum / Dernő = DER-new / Gencs = GENCH / Imola = IM-ola / Ladány = LUH-don / Rőce = RUE-tze / Bolyk = BOYK / Kelecsény = KEL-eh-chain / Csetnek = CHET-neck / Uza = OOZE-uh / Kobéla = COE-bay-luh Lam’s daughters: Almány = UHL-mine / Betlér = BET-lair / Gerlice = GIRL-itze / Gortva = GORT-vuh / Jόsva = YOOSH-vuh / Hisnyό = HISH-nyo Grandchildren (sex unknown): Madaras = MUD-uh-russ / Derencsény = DAREN-chain / Dobra = DOE-bruh / Gόcs = rhymes with ‘coach’ / Cikό = TZEE-coe / Leste = LESH-teh / Oskό = OSH-coe / Feled = FEL-edd / Doma = DOE-muh / Bugyik = BOODGE-ik / Lubény = LOU-bain / Pozsá-lo = POE-zsa-low [zsa as in Zsa Zsa Gabor] / Bebek = BEB-ek/ Csatό = CHUH-toe / Okolicsány = OH-coal-ee-chon / Cserencsény = TSCHE-wren-chain / Kökényes = KEW-cain-yesh / Zsedény = SHEH-dain / Guszona = GOOSE-oh-nuh / Hársika = HARSH-i-kuh / Pόcsika = POE-cheek-uh / Ilon = ILL-own / Tama = TUM-uh Great-grandchildren (sex unknown): Veszverés = VES-ver-aish / Zagrágy = ZUH-grage (as in ‘garage’) / Petne = PET-neh / Berzéte = BEAR-zaid-teh / Bablus = BUB-loush / Csépány = CHAY-pahn / Hacsa = HUTCH-uh / Csoltό = CHOL-toe Obviously, some of these names are too long to be used as names for dogs. But of course they can be altered and still keep their Hungarian flavor. The same can be done even with some of the shorter names. For instance: Csucsom→Choochie Gencs→Genchie Bolyk→Boykie Kelecseny→Kellchie Okolicsany→Ocoalie Cserencseny→Cherenchie Veszveres→Vesverie or Vesie As you requested, I am attaching an English translation of the Hungarian original. I am also including a pronunciation guide to all of the names. Note that virtually all of the personal names are 'ancient' leftovers (in the 12th century) from the pre-Christian era. I imagine that a lot of puli owners would be glad to use them as names for their dogs: Hungarian dog, old Hungarian name. I have also suggested how some of the names can be shortened or 'anglicized' while still retaining their Hungarian flavor. Puli News - August 2012, Page 23 Club Presidents Challenge AKC Political Action Committee AKC Canine Legislative Support Fund Dear AKC Member Club President: Another election year is upon us, and the 2012 campaign season is in full swing. Today, we face unprecedented challenges to our rights to own, breed, and exhibit our beloved dogs. While the majority of candidates may not be making stump speeches about canine legislation, it is almost a certainty they will encounter the issue if elected. With more radical threats on the horizon, I believe no election cycle has been more important to us than this one. Former U. S. House Speaker Tip O’Neill said, “All politics is local” and for us, that’s never been truer than now. Participation by club members is a vital part of our legislative strategy in countering the vast financial resources of the animal rights movement. Club members, however, have the opportunity to fight back! In 2011, the AKC PAC received only $6,662 in contributions from members of AKC-affiliated clubs (that’s an average of only five cents per club member!) with the balance coming from AKC staff personally and the AKC Board of Directors. In order to provide resources, tools, and environment that clubs must have to be successful, we need your help! The Club Presidents Challenge is a direct request for YOU to challenge your club and its members to join the fight to protect our rights as responsible dog owners. There are two parts to the Challenge. 1) I challenge you to secure at least $200 from your club members for the AKC Political Action Committee (AKC PAC). Even a small donation to the AKC PAC offers club members the opportunity to financially support candidates who will protect our rights. The AKC PAC also delivers unsurpassed value to contributors by using 100% of their contributions to support dog-friendly candidates in critical races. Simply collect contributions from members of your AKC kennel club, complete the enclosed donor information form, and submit one check to the AKC PAC. You might also consider designating all or a portion of your club’s annual dues to the PAC. This would comply with the law while providing an easy way for members to support the PAC. Puli News - August 2012, Page 24 2) I further challenge your club to contribute at least $300 to the AKC Canine Legislation Support Fund (CLSF). All money contributed to this fund helps to defray the AKC’s costs in supporting legislation, securing formal representation in Congress and statehouses, and education legislators and the public about responsible and fair policies for dog breeding and ownership. Contributions to the CLSF can come from a club’s treasury. Our goal is to achieve 100% club participation. If we are successful, your club will be part of raising over $1,000,000 for the AKC PAC and the CLSF, making them real forces for protecting dogs in the United States. We will report results of the Club Presidents Challenge and keep you informed on how your club’s money is being used for dogs. This long-term initiative will help assure that the American Kennel Club and our 5000+ clubs meet today’s challenges with the same vigor as our radical opponents. Meet this challenge by July 31, and your leadership will help position the AKC to influence the political process better than it ever has before. I know you are up to this challenge. I look forward to reporting that your leadership helped secure a strong political future for responsible dog breeders and owners. Sincerely, Carl C. Ashby, III Chairman, AKC PAC Board This letter was received after the June issue of Puli News went to press; the Board did donate to both organizations on behalf of PCA. However, it is never too late for individuals to donate to the AKC PAC and the AKC Canine Legislation Support Fund. On the next page is a copy of a flyer from AKC that describes both organizations and how to read more about them on-line and provide support. Many groups that support responsible dog ownership and breeding are already in the midst of trying to stop activities that will define whether pure-bred dogs continue to exist and be available to the public for purchase (especially breeds with small numbers such as ours). I live in Texas where the animal rights organizations have already gotten bills passed in the State legislature to severely limit what I can do with my dogs — I know many of our PCA members live in states where similar things are happening. If you aren’t aware of what is going on in your state and/or aren’t involved in the fight against the animal rights groups whose long-term goal is to severely control and/or eliminate pet ownership, get involved. The future of our breed is truly at stake! —Linore Cleveland, Editor, Puli News Puli News - August 2012, Page 25 Puli News - August 2012, Page 26 This information appeared in the June Puli News Issue. The answer is 3. Do you have a story about your Puli? Would you be willing to share it with the readers of Puli News— those who already love the breed? Has your Puli earned a certification or therapy hours? Share his or her accomplishment with the readers of Puli news. Puli News would love to print more about your Pulis — we are already expanding our coverage of some of the activities you do with your Puli by recognizing their accomplishments as CGC certified dogs, as herding instinct tested dogs (IT and HCT), as tracking dogs (tracking certificate) and as Therapy Dogs (I’m sure there are a lot of you out there who do visit Nursing Homes, participate in Canine Literacy programs, work in Rehab Hospitals,… with your Pulis). See page 8 in this issue of Puli News. PCA’s Versatile Puli award recognizes Pulis that have done many of these activities (and others such as titles in Obedience, Agility, Herding, Tracking). However, it takes a lot of points to earn a Versatile Puli award — and Puli News would like to share your activities with your Puli even if you never earn all those points. So PLEASE send me the information on your Puli’s accomplishments (and we’d love a color picture of your Puli as well). Sire, Dam, and Breeder information is optional. You can find more about the Versatile Puli award on the Puli Club website: http://puliclub.org. Then click on the COMPETITION menu item at the top of the page and select Versatile Puli Awards. When the Versatile Puli information page comes up, scroll to near the bottom of the page and click on the link to the Versatile Puli awards form. The second page of the form lists the types of activities that will be recognized in Puli News. On pages 28-30 of this newsletter is information about updates to the Versatile Puli award. AND — if you’re willing to write something about your much loved Puli, please share that as well — along with a color picture if you have one. Every person who owns a Puli has an inherent responsibility to protect our breed. A. · · B. A PULI OWNER WILL PROVIDE ALL DOGS WITHIN THEIR KEEPING WITH: Appropriate food, water, health care and shelter. Emotional requirements of attention, affection and appropriate training. · · · · A PULI BREEDER WILL: · · · · · · Be well-informed about the Standard of our breed. Be aware that the purpose of breeding is to maintain or improve the quality of the breed in accordance with the standard. Use all available means such as knowledge of ancestors, and CHIC testing to determine that breeding stock is free of inheritable disease. PCA required CHIC testing includes: 1. OFA or Penn Hip for hips 2. OFA for patella 3. OFA Degenerative Myelopathy (DNA test) 4. CERF (Canine Eye Registry) to be updated every 3 years Additional tests that can be performed but are not required include: 1. OFA for elbows 2. OFA for cardiac 3. OFA for thyroid 4. BAER (hearing) test Obtain radiologically normal OFA/Penn Hip evaluation on all breeding stock before breeding. Use only stock which is itself sound in body and temperament. · · · · · · Breed only when in a position to properly care for the bitch and litter, recognizing that offspring might need housing for a considerable length of time. Not breed a bitch at her first season, before the age of 2, nor breed her more than 2 out of 3 consecutive heat periods, taking the health of the bitch into consideration at all times. Enter into all breeding arrangements with written contracts. Keep accurate and thorough breeding records in full accordance with AKC requirements. Prevent all breedings that are not carefully planned and provide adequate kenneling to prevent accidental or unplanned matings. Insist that a visiting bitch be in the stud owner’s care and/or supervision before, through and until completion of estrus, so that accidental mating to another stud not occur. Not substitute one stud for another without the knowledge and agreement of all parties. Pay careful attention to physical and emotional needs of puppies produced. Keep all puppies in the litter until they are a minimum of eight (8) weeks of age. Be aware at all times that producing puppies is a commitment and they remain responsible for puppies they produce throughout the lifetime of those dogs. Breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of rehoming, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home. They must also pay whatever the current fee is for the listing. Proof of the required CHIC health tests for hips, patellas, DM and CERF for sire and dam must be provided. CERF testing on sire and dam must have occurred within the last 3 years” Zeal to produce champions or perpetuate a bloodline must never compromise a breeder's sensitivity to the quality of life that every Puli bred will experience. Breeders must consider the welfare of the Puli above personal gain or profit. Breeders have the responsibility to insure the welfare of all puppies they produce and remain responsible for those Pulik throughout their entire lifetime. Should the situation arise, breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home. This wording has been added to insure that breeder's own the ultimate responsibility for the dogs they produce throughout their lifetime. The Puli Club of America Rescue Trust is not responsible for placing dogs bred by known people in the breed, and the Board felt that clear lines need to be established to advise everyone of their responsibility in the future. Should Rescue be advised of a Puli in need of rehoming their first obligation is to try to determine who the breeder is, and then contact that person in order that they can make the necessary arrangements for their dog.
