Criteria to consider when
selecting the “right” cooler
There’s a wide and diverse range of coolers on offer for leisure and travel activities. To find out which product suits you, your vehicle
and your holiday plans you should ask yourself a few questions before you buy and also have some technical knowledge. This is
provided by our brochure, which will safely guide you to making a good decision. If you want to put your decision into action right
now, check the last pages for the complete range of Dometic and WAECO leisure coolers.
Here are the questions you should ask yourself:
1. Which “mobile” cooling technologies are available?
2. Where is my travel destination?
3. What level of cooling performance do I expect?
4. Which energy source do I want to use?
5. What about energy consumption?
6. Does it bother me if the cooler makes noise?
7. What size should the cooler be?

1. Three cooling systems
For mobile applications
Dometic WAECO employs three different types of cooling technology to keep things fresh when travelling. Each one has its benefits and
specific characteristics that make it ideal for certain uses. Here’s a brief overview of how they work.
Absorbertechnik
1. Absorption cooling
Condenser
Kondensator
A concentrated ammonia solution is heated in a boiler and expelled as vapour. The pressurised ammonia gas is then
liquefied in a condenser. Supplied with hydrogen, it evaporates and in the process extracts heat from the storage
container. The ammonia gas then enters the absorber where it is reabsorbed in a weak solution of ammonia. Finally,
the saturated solution flows back to the boiler where the whole cycle starts again.

The thermoelectric principle was discovered by J. C. A. Peltier, which is why the temperature generating parts of
thermoelectric systems are referred to as Peltier elements. Thermoelectrics are based on the fact that cold or heat
energy (depending on the polarity) is generated when a DC current is conducted between different types of metal.
The heating or cooling capacity is further enhanced by heat exchangers and air fans. Ideal for low and medium
cooling volumes.

3. Compressor technology

Compressor units operate using a refrigerant that changes from liquid to gaseous state in the evaporator. The
evaporation extracts heat from the interior of the cooling unit – the temperature drops. The compressor draws in
the refrigerant, compresses it and passes it on to the condenser. Here, the absorbed heat is released to the
atmosphere. The refrigerant liquefies again and flows to the evaporator, where the cycle begins again.

Any distinguishing features? Lots of them!
Each of the three cooling technologies described maintains a strong position in the leisure market. Still, none of them can do everything.
Whether you are best served with an absorption or compressor unit will depend on how and where you intend to use your cooling
appliance. You should therefore carefully compare the systems before you make your decision.
1. Absorption coolers
≥ Gas-powered cooling independent of electricity
≥ Three way cooling - Gas, 12 volts DC or 230 volts AC
≥ Silent operation
≥ Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature
2. Thermoelectric coolers
≥ 12 / 24 / 230 Volt
≥ Independent of inclination
≥ Lightweight and low-cost
≥ Cooling performance depending on the ambient temperature
3. Compressor coolers
≥E
xcellent cooling performance even at extreme
ambient temperatures
≥ Refrigeration and deep-freezing
≥ 12 / 24 / 100 – 240 volts
≥ Low power consumption – suitable for solar operation
≥ Battery protection

Our tip
Actually, we bought the WAECO
CoolFreeze CF 50 compressor cooler
for our holiday travels, because it stays
freezing cold even in soaring heat. Now
we have discovered just how useful it is
for barbecuing at home. Simply plug it
into the mains and you have an excellent on-site fridge for meat and drinks.

2. Where do you intend to travel?
Temperature conditions at your
holiday destination
If you love the Far North or like spending your holidays in Germany or one of its neighbouring countries, you will challenge your cooling
appliance less than if you prefer the sunny south. A fact to consider in this context is that the cooling performance of thermoelectric and
absorption coolers depends on the ambient temperature. Compressor boxes will always provide powerful cooling, regardless of the outside temperature, and they can even be used for deep-freezing. If you have daytime temperatures of 40°C and more, as is the case in
Spain, Greece or Croatia, thermoelectric appliances won’t give satisfactory cooling results. You may be better off with an absorption
cooler – depending on where you place it. A compressor unit would be better for use in hotter regions.

Pick a coolbox to match the ambient temperature. It is an important aspect to consider when you decide whether it has to be a highcapacity absorption cooler, a lightweight thermoelectric unit or a compressor box with cooling power independent of the ambient
temperature.
Two cooling systems in one box
Ingenious technology for even more versatile use: the WAECO CoolFun CK 40D
Hybrid incorporates a high-performance compressor as well as a thermoelectric
unit. In compressor mode (230 volts) it provides refrigeration and deep-freezing
up to –15°C, regardless of the temperature outside. The integrated thermoelectric
system fills in when the cooler is used in the vehicle. Connected to the 12-volt
battery it cools food and drinks up to 20°C below the ambient temperature
while driving. It is the ideal awning fridge – and just as great for your home or
garden party.

DO YOU NEED?
Cooler, refrigerator or deep freeze?
Are you the “day trip” type who wants a cooler for fruit and beverage bottles? Or do you travel for several weeks on your holiday
and would like to have frozen food on board? If the former is true, an inexpensive thermoelectric box will do. The latter calls for a
compressor cooler.

4. Which energy source
do you want to use?
From battery power to gas operation
Will it be enough for you to run your cooler “only” from the 12- or 24-volt vehicle battery? Do you want a mains option (230 volts) as well?
Or are you one of those camping enthusiasts who prefer cooking with gas? The Dometic WAECO range offers cooling appliances for all
of these energy sources – compressor units can even be run with solar power. When gas operation is a priority, there’s only one choice
for you: absorption cooling.

My tip
Compressor coolers from WAECO are energy-saving and offer the benefit of integrated battery
protection. This puts you on the safe side when the unit is powered via the vehicle battery. Solar
operation is another asset. Compressor coolers will also work with solar power – something you
should use if you frequently travel to the sunny south.

hat about energy consumption?
Dealing with limited energy resources
In mobile applications electrical devices are mostly supplied from “limited energy sources”. That means energy consumption is a crucial
factor to consider. The table below tells you how to calculate the consumption of specific cooling appliances. It becomes obvious that
longer periods of use (e.g. more than 2 days) call for the energy-efficient compressor technology. The owners of an absorption unit have
an alternative, though: gas operation.

Requirements for cooling appliances: Energy consumption labelling
A++
Coolers which are predominantly run on the mains are subject to the Eco Design directive for determining
the energy efficiency class. Absorption coolers are exempt as they can also be operated with gas.
Depending on the cooling technology, mobile cooling appliances can use two different measuring techniques.
Thermoelectric coolers cool down to a interior temperature of 17°C at an ambient temperature of 25°C. The
power consumption required for this is represented by the energy efficiency. The WAECO thermoelectric
coolers all consistently reach A++.
Compressor-powered coolers are classified with an ambient temperature of 25°C and an interior
temperature of 5°C. The models in the WAECO CFX series here with the A++ energy efficiency class
achieve top rates which have never been matched in the area of mobile compressor coolers.

6. H
ow much “noise” is acceptable?
Different noise emission levels
The noise emission of a cooling appliance is less of an issue while driving. Things are different though when you are sharing the room with
it at the campsite, or when you sleep next to it. If you want to place your cooler in the awning – as most camping enthusiasts would – you
are best served with an absorption appliance, because this cooling technology is absolutely silent. You can just as well opt for a
compressor unit if you don’t bother that the compressor will occasionally turn on.

7. What size should your cooler be?
We have models in all shapes and sizes
Naturally, we can supply any size of cooler you want. You should bear in mind, though, that the larger the
cooling compartment, the more energy will be consumed. Also, a jumbo-size cooler weighs more and is more
difficult to store than a 20-litre compact model.
But then, a family of five camping enthusiasts would not be served well with a compact solution – 40 litres
cooling capacity is the least they should have. To cut a long story short, the cooling appliance of your choice should fit like a glove. It should
be just the right size to match yourself, your plans, the number of travel mates, and, of course, the space available to store it.

My tip
“Take two“ – that’s what we do. For day outings and spontaneous picnics we bought the
thermoelectric WAECO TropiCool TC 21FL. We fill it with drinks and sandwiches in the morning –
and it’s empty in the evening. I also take it when I’m travelling for work. For holiday journeys we
invested in a WAECO CoolFreeze CFX 50. The unit fits neatly into the storage
compartment of our motorhome, and we also use it for occasional boat trips. The overriding
factor for buying it was its incredible performance that is typical of a compressor cooler.
The sun is burning hot and it still stays freezing cold.

Mains connection for thermoelectric and compressor coolers
Do you have a portable cooler with a 12-volt or 12/24-volt connection, or are you planning to buy one? Then you will always have the
option to run it from the mains too. With the matching WAECO CoolPower mains adapter you can use it on a mains socket at home, in the
hotel, or in your holiday home. That will give you a much wider range of possibilities.
