Captain Frank Mundus pioneered the sport of shark fishing in
1951 off Montauk, New York, and on June 5, 1964, he and his
crew caught this monster 4,500 lb. great white shark. It took
five hours to land and was mentioned in the Guinness Book of
Records. This shark was 17-1/2 foot long with a 13 foot girth.
News reports of its capture may have influenced Jaws author
Peter Benchley to create his classic work of fiction.
