Dear Fellow Residents,
This special edition features some of the delightful moments
Noosa Waters residents and friends have shared over the last
few weeks, culminating in Queendsland Birthday celebrations
and planting a time capsule, to be retrieved in 10 years time
- Thursday, June 6th, 2019.
Queensland
150th Birthday
As usual, this quarter has been a busy time with meetings and
on-going discussions with Council and others about various
issues including lock maintenance, short term holiday rentals,
fountain upgrade, landscaping and storm water.
Currently the major threat to our neighbourhood is the
Application by Villa Noosa to extend trading hours to 5 am
every day. Feedback received indicates residents are very
much opposed to this Application. The Association has written
to Woolworths seeking withdrawal of the application and has
lodged an objection with Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.
I strongly encourage you to send a written objection addressing the criteria by July 2nd and sign petitions.
Coast Guard
Boats & BBQs
NW Sports & Social Group was launched for bone fide Noosa
Waters residents, in March, resulting in a wide range of well
supported, and much enjoyed, activities and events. Simply
join any groups of interest to you - www.noosawaters.org
Do make a point of supporting the monthly events organised
by the NW Sports & Social Group. There are a variety of
events, different times, days and venues; some may have
a community fund raising element, all are kept as affordable
as possible and many are BYO and held at no-cost. At most
events, invited friends and family members are welcome,
although RSVP is essential as numbers may be limited. Why
not design an activity or event yourself?

We are indebted to Gloria & Barry for organsing the 150th
Queensland Birthday flotilla, picnic and time capsule, and for
organising social BBQs with Coastguard. Congratulations to
new Commander, David Price and thanks to outgoing Commander, Robin Hood, and to Alan Hall for their support and for
interesting, entertaining information seminars. Also for much
appreciated Coastguard presence at boating events. We look
forward to continuing our successful liaison.
Appreciation to Andy Hallinon who generously gave up several
days of his time to record an historic DVD about Noosa Waters
and Queensland Day, which was placed in the time capsule.
Also to Anthea and the team for their outstanding hospitality.
Our main Social Event this year is the 1940s Big Swing
Band Ball on Saturday 15 August at the Majestic Theatre
in Pomona to help raise funds for Noosa Coast Guard. It
is open to all. No need to worry about driving as Coaches will
pick you up from Shorehaven Drive. It is recommended that
you book now as numbers are limited. Dress for 1940s.
I am pleased to introduce Heather Mills as our Welcome-toNoosa Waters Co-ordinator. She will greet new residents and
equip them with Welcome kits, information and newsletters.

planning scheme being developed and its impact on NW, and
about Council’s budget for 2009/2010. This is your chance
to have your say. Don’t miss out!
Unfortunately, there have been a number of local scams,
breakins, thefts, damage to property and incidents of antisocial behcviour. It is vital that any criminal or suspicious
behaviour is reported quickly, and that we are vigilant with
security - watching out for neighbours property too.
To ensure that your Association is able to continue to maintain and improve the Estate and can take action when our
amenity and lifestyle are threatened I urge you to renew
your membership (or join) this month. We can now offer
on-line booking and payment facilities for events and membership payments through the website or pay by cheque to
Treasurer with completed form.
I would like to thank all Committee members and
volunteers for the contribution they make to Association
activities. Special thanks to Howard Martin for our first
class, constantly evolving website and Cathie Martin for
raising advertising revenue for the continued production of
high quality Newsletters, and for her enthusiasm and drive
as co-ordinator for new members.

Landscaping
Fountain News
The modernising of the landscaping around the fountain has started.
The new design by Barry Armfield will be more “Noosa garden” inspired.
Barry was contracted by Council a couple of years ago to design and
construct the garden area on the east side of Riverbreeze and Gibson Road
(when the new sign was constructed). This area uses of variety of Noosa
plants with great use of colour and vision of planting. I am sure when the
garden surrounding our dating fountain is completed it will give the area a
much needed boost.
The resurfacing of the fountain is under discussion at present. John and
I gathered the quotes and, after many hours, finally found the right contracter for the job. We have now all met with Council on site. Hopes are
pinned on our local Councillor, Russell Green, to try to find funds from the
upcoming budget, in order to complete the fountain renovation. With both
surrounding gardens and the resurfacing completed, our water feature will
have a new lease of life for hopefully, another 15 years!
Mulching
It is that time again with the weather turning cooler and the gardens
dormant, to mulch gardens. Last year, residents remulched existing park
gardens with an amazing 250 meters of mulch. We remulch to retain
water in the garden when it rains and it also slows or maybe stops weeds
from growing. Four keen co-ordinators have already completed mulching their areas - that’s 21 meters already! Wheelbarrows and forks are at
the ready - so if any park co-ordinators or keen residents want to mulch
existing garden beds in our beautiful parks, please get in touch with me.

Queensland Birthday Flotilla
Boating convemors, Barry Maloney and Gloria Bruzzone initiated a special
mid-year flotilla, inviting Noosa Waters folk to celebrate Queensland’s
150th birthday afloat and alongside the canal, followed by a ‘Picnic in the
Park’. Boat owners generously extended invitations to other residents.

many letters and phone calls of support.

These entry statements will be rendered and painted in our current modern colours. Rendering will be funded by NWRA from next years’ budget.
Street Trees
Any resident that would love to have a street tree on their Council footpath, could you please get in touch with me also. I am finding Council to
be very approachable and easy to deal with still but a little slower with
delivery and getting appointments. Patience and understanding on our
part is needed due to the amalgamation.

Part of the occcasion was also to bury a time capsule which included items
submitted by residents to capture elements of the times including photos,
newspaper articles, promotional leaflets showing technology of this era
and prices of everything from houses, cars and computers to clothes and
everyday items. It provides a snapshot of how things were on the beach,
in Noosa Waters and Queensland on this day; football results and so much
more. (See webpage for complete list.) Pre-enactment Planting took place
on Saturday, with official planting ceremony on Monday, June 8th - Queen’s
birthday! A commemorative plaque will be provided by Council.

Waterwatch
Lock Weir & Salinity Pump Infrastructure
A Lock and Weir levy is rated on waterfront owners. Council is responsible for all works and has been made aware that Noosa Waters Residents
Association (NWRA) is to be advised of costs and discuss how savings may
be achieved without compromising reliability.
Award winning, Legacy Films director, Andy Hallinon, recorded interviews
with Gary and Barry, and filmed the flotilla event for a memorial DVD, to be
placed in the capsule. Copies of the DVD can be purchased for $10 to raise
funds for Noosa Croquet Club.
Key mechanical and electrical parts are to be kept as spares. There are
three lock and weir systems within the Sunshine Coast Regional Council
and a common spare parts inventory will be implemented where design
permits. Normal contractual undertakings for the lock and weir include
penalty clauses.
There have been reports of the card-swiping mechanism being faulty intermittently: New swipe position markings are working satisfactorily. Council
has had a white dot added to the reader indicating where to swipe for both
the river side and canal side jetties.
The Hercus gearboxes (shown in photo next page) will be retained until
they need replacing. When they do, they will be replaced by the same
type as those used on other Sunshine Coast lock systems, facilitating the
holding of spare parts.

Structures holding access readers and warning lights have been repaired
by replacing timber and painting on both sides of lock. Warning light mesh
guard is now secure, with rear support brace for structural security.

The cracked concrete slab forming the floating dock is to be sealed to prevent water ingress which exacerbates reinforcing deterioration.
Rusted screws holding the timber on the walkway are being replaced with
stainless steel screws. Sections of fencing around lock are badly rusted in
places and are to be replaced and painted. Timber fenders bolted to the
concrete at the lock entrance are to be replaced.

Rubber fenders on the floating jetty need replacing as the rubber is breaking down and has lost all flexibility. Following WW suggestion, that white
rubber is used for replacement, to avoid marking vessels, Council will
investigate the durability and environmental stability of this product.

Algae in Canal Adjacent to Fountain
Report on the aquatic plant/algal sample, brackish canal, 17th April 2009.
comprising 4 common species. The most common species is the aquatic
fern Azolla filiculoides Lamouroux (Azollaceae). Spirodela sp. (Aracae)
(duckweed - a flowering plant) is also common. Less common are two
filamentous green algal species, Oedogonium sp. and Spirogyra sp. (Zygnematales, Chlorophyta). A lot of particulate matter found in the sample.

“Sharks are natural inhabitants of Queensland waterways and it is
therefore possible that sharks exist in Noosa Waters. Residents may
wish to consider that in the 16 years since the canals were completed, no
person or animal has been reported as attacked and no shark has been
caught. Common sense should be used in deciding where to swim in all
Queensland waters. Any reported shark sightings in Noosa Waters will be
referred to Sunshine Coast Regional Council as the responsible authority”.
All 4 species are typically found in freshwater habitats. Azolla and
Spirodela typically float on the water surface in still water habitats. With
the heavy rain in the Noosa hinterland, it is probable that these species
have been washed downstream from the freshwater section of the Noosa
River. The plants and algae look healthy – Azolla is typically red in appearance. No known noxious species were found.
Servicing Of Vessels In Noosa Waters
Council Environmental & Health Dept has advised of the potential for environmental damage if vessels are serviced in Noosa Waters. Council has
contacted service providers about this matter.

Short Term Holiday Rentals
Know Your Neighbours - Value Neighbourhood Watch!
A recent personal experience has highlighted to me the importance of
knowing your neighbours. On a beautiful April day whilst putting out one
of my Open Home signs I stopped to say hello to a small boy standing near
his letterbox. We chatted awhile and he hung around so I asked what he
was doing for the rest of the holidays. His reply came ‘my mummy is sick
and can’t get off the couch’. Alarm bells rang so I asked him if he would
like me to check on her.

A survey covering all properties close to short term holiday rentals in
Noosa Waters is being conducted. All recipients are encouraged to return
the survey and highlight the full extent of problems they may be experiencing. This will provide important feedback to the sub–committee.
Sadly I found she was sitting on the couch and after a quick assessment
realized she had passed away. What a tragedy. This young lady had died
in the company of her frightened six year old son. He had tried to assist
her with her asthma puffer and sprayed it in front of her when she couldn’t
do it. I asked him what was on television when his mother got sick and to
my horror discovered she had passed away 22 hours before, leaving this
confused six year old alone all throughout the previous night.
Further discussions have been held with Richardson & Wrench
(the main STHR agent in Noosa Waters) concerning time restrictions on
the use of outdoor entertainment areas so as to reduce late night noise
problems. Similar to any holiday resort.
Their response has been very disappointing. It seems they are not
prepared to show leadership in these matters and place the wishes of
client owners and tenants well ahead of consideration for the residents of
NW. Residents should consider carefully their real estate relationships.
Support those that support us.
He had nothing to eat for dinner nor for breakfast. I found him at 1pm
the following day. This little boy knew the phone numbers for his dad but
couldn’t find the phone. I know there are lovely neighbours nextdoor and
across the road, but he did not know how to ask for help.
It is interesting to note that problems with short term holiday rentals is
affecting a growing number of coastal communities. The Gold Coast Council has become another council looking at introducing laws to control this
activity and preserve the quiet residential nature of their local communities. We will be seeking similar action from Sunshine Coast Council.
My reason for sharing this story is in the hope that we can take a lesson
from this. We must make sure our children or grandchildren know exactly
what to do in case of an emergency. So often in our busy lives today, we
forget about the neighbours. I personally support the ideals of Neighbourhood Watch and Social groups. No matter what our age, we may all need
the help of a friend. Do take the time to get to know each other.

Noosa Teams to Compete in 2009
World Masters Games, Sydney
Issue 54 - Winter Edition
Noosa Waters Classic Car Activity Group
The 2009 World Masters Games are to be held at 20 venues across Sydney
between 10th -18th October 2009. Some 25,000 competitors (including
Noosa Waters residents) will make it the largest sporting competition in
the world this year. The Opening and Closing ceremonies are expected to
rival the spectacle of the Olympics and will be televised nationally.
Wishing to be a part of this special event, two Noosa Teams, The Noosa
Nomads and The Noosa Outriggers are heading south to join in the fun.
The Nomads currently comprise a husband and wife team competing in the
Double Kayak events and two former surf lifesavers attempting to relive
past glories on surf skis paddling in the Single Kayak events.
Members are looking forward to the Noosa Beach Classic Car Show in
September, which this year teams with the Bi-Annual Bristol Car Club of
Australia National Rally. The Bristol car will be Honoured Marque for 2009.
As well as the attraction of the competition and camaraderie that is expected, there are also numerous social events to liven up Sydney and the
Noosa teams are planning to be in the thick of things in this regard.
This event has been the culmination of much hard work by a dedicated
few, attracting attendees from all over Australia, NZ and UK. 40 cars and
their enthusiastic owners – many of whom will drive their cars from Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne – will converge on Noosa for a week.

MW Car company was forced to hand over plans and drawings of BMW
cars of the 30’s to Bristol Aeroplane Company, for “War Reparations”.
- Bristol supplies racing engines to many manufacturers - Cooper, Lotus,
Tojiero, Frazer N, Arnolt and many more. Today, there are only two sole
privately owned car companies left in the world - Morgan and Bristol. The
latest model to come from Bristol is called “Fighter”. It has a twin Turbo
V10 Viper engine, gullwing doors and is so powerful, that performance figures are not available. Cost is around £650,000 and there is a 2 year

Croquet Club News
Major Tournament Held in April at Noosa Croquet Club
After many weeks of preparation, the Sunshine Coast Regional Croquet
Committee Tournament was held in ideal conditions where competition
between the 4 divisions was keen.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Cancer Research
Raised over $2100; 170 attended. Sadly cancer touches everyone’s lives
sooner or later. Organiser, NW resident Celia Maloney, was delighted with
the support shown by fellow residents and others. Her dedicated team
members including Greater Noosa Living’s Jonette Wilton and Frank Wilkie
as MC and the Noosa Yacht Club and staff who donated venue, catering
and their time. Ask Celia about next event: Christmas in July lunch.
NWRA Sports & Social Group BBQ and optional try croquet day
Our club was pleased to host the NW Social Club for a BBQ and optional
croquet day, in May. It was good to once again be the venue for this new
and flourishing Group. We look forward to the next occasion.

Queenslander Club
Heather Mills has started a club for genuine dinky di Queenslanders, of
which we do have a few in Noosa Waters, including Geoff Hore who sang
the Queensland State song at the planting ceremony. Fellow Queenslander Di Kirby organised a special Queenslanders Club lunch on June 6th
at River Edge Bistro, Gympie Terrace enjoyed by 40 guests.
Million Paws Walk for RSPCA - Noosa Waters dogs were well represented! Nicole Cleary thanks all who particpated. Noosa had 300 registrations
and raised $5,000. Qld raised $150,000 with 9,000 registrations.

Having lived in Hastings St and on the river at Tewantin, each with its own
charm and beauty, I love living here in Noosa Waters for all its particular
beauty and the friendliness of the people. So much activity, cycling, boating and all us walkers trying to do our bit to keep fit. And our wonderful
Residents Association that through its executive and members plays such a
pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the Noosa Waters character.

include some former locals that had left the area but now realise the

Safeguard your keys – do not make your keys an easy
target by leaving them lying around at work or at home.
Never leave keys in the ignition.
Lock up every time you leave the vehicle – even for fuel.
Visible belongings are at risk – remove from the vehicle or
at least secure them out of sight.
Install an engine immobiliser or use a steering wheel lock.
Do not leave important documents in your vehicle that
can identify you or your address.
Do not advertise your stereo system with external stickers
Never leave your navigator device in your vehicle – also
remove securing attachment.
Park wisely in a well lit area at night visible to all.
Secure your bike – use a high quality lock and secure
your motor bike, scooter or bicycle to something solid.

Editorial Epilogue
Welcome to the new feature which is only possible on the
website - the opportunity to put in those items which could
not be fitted into the hard copy version with space and deadlines ruling!
Queensland 150th Birthday, though poorly promoted in this
region by officialdom, ignited creative and social spirits in
Noosa Waters. Apart from the wonderful day that was had
by all, thanks to the generosity of friends and neighbours, the
occasion was further enhanced at the actual planting of the
capsule, by Geoff’s rendition of the Queensland song and by
Frank Bryant’s specially scribed poem, read by Margaret.
Those who want to relive the whole event, or capture it for
the first time, can do so by watching Andy’s DVD.

or other information or ideas for the newsletter- especially as we now have on-line capacity, please email to

Help is Available to Those Without Email or Internet
Please inform any friends and neighbours who have not yet

Queensland’s Birthday
Along the Canals, on a bright sunny day,
With flags and bunting all array,
Came the flotilla for all to see,
Sailing to lunch at Mermaid Quay,
The outing was arranged to celebrate
150 years of Queensland State;
Just near the fountain, into the ground,
Went a Time Capsule to be found
By someone interested, in twenty nineteen,
To tell of ’09, how things had been,
Everyday items and prices we pay,
Letters and Bills, the News of the Day;
This taken care of, we each one and all
Wholeheartedly agreed – we had a ball!

Clyde Collins was born in Sydney in 1914, he became very well
known as musical director of the Theatre Royal in Brisbane, and then
he was the first musical director for Channel 7 in Brisbane. He died in
2003. He also wrote “A little Boy Called Smiley” and “ Marching Band
on Parade” used in the closing of the Sydney Olympic 2000.
