Greetings Mirza Nobles and Ladies! We
have just returned from the CSSA Ceremonial
in Tulsa, where the Nobles & Ladies attending
had a fun-filled weekend. A tip of the fez goes
to Uniform Units President Dave Blessent, the
officers, and especially their Ladies for Mirza’s
great hospitality room. We trust everyone will
take the time to thank them for their preparations
and hard work. A little fun was provided by your
co-authors and Illustrious Sir Dave Smith, all of
whom accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,
and had the episodes posted on Facebook.
On August 1st your co-authors and our
Ladies trekked to Branson for meetings with
the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), the
Hilton Hotels and the Branson Convention
Center. We toured facilities and discussed
the presentation which Mirza and the host
city are required to make at the 2015 CSSA
Business Session in Golden, CO on March
20th. Branson had a fairly new promotional
presentation to which the CVB offered to add
touches customized for our event. We will have
a follow-up meeting with the CVB to add these
items and cover any details. The target date for
that meeting is November 25th.
over Thanksgiving, when she was just 13 years
old. The Ararat Shrine Temple sponsored Josey for
the surgery. Josey has performed at Shrine Circus
events in the Kansas City area.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is changing
lives every day through
innovative pediatric specialty
care, world-class research and
outstanding medical education.
Our 22 facilities, located in
the United States, Canada and
Mexico, provide advanced care
for children with orthopaedic
conditions, burns, spinal cord
injuries, and cleft lip and palate.

based in Kansas City, MO. She is an International
(See Pg. 6 Milner)
Thank you to the several Nobles & Ladies
who have approached us with offers to be a part
of Mirza’s CSSA 2018. This is greatly appreciated
and we do intend to put you to work. Your
co-authors had some time while we were in
Branson to compile a list of critical jobs and our
choices to fill them. We will be putting together
job descriptions and asking some of you to take on
these tasks. We have already asked a couple of you
and thank you for accepting.
The CSSA by-laws require the officers to meet
between the Ceremonial and Business Sessions.
For the last few years this meeting has been held
in October, after the financials are compiled from
the Ceremonial Session. This years’ meeting is
scheduled for October 10th & 11th in Lincoln, NE,
and will be reported on in the next column.
Mirza has several fun activities scheduled
for the fall, and we encourage you to participate
and enjoy all of them that you can. Illustrious Sir
Dave & First Lady Sheri are coming down the
home stretch of what has been a good year. They
have shown us the joy of “Having fun & helping
kids”. Get involved!!! You will enjoy Mirza and
Shrinedom so much more.
Fraternally,
Darrell & Les

Hospital Update
By Kerry Smith, St. Louis Business Journal
When Shriners Hospitals for Children–St. Louis
opens its Central West End facility in April 2015,
the fraternal organization’s ability to specialize
in orthopedic research and treatment will expand
even further.
The $50 million, 90,000-square-foot specialty
hospital on the campus of Washington University
School of Medicine (corner of Clayton and
Newstead) is located on 3.75 acres just two blocks
east of Shriners’ original facility, which opened in
1924.
Christner Inc. is the architect and S.M. Wilson
& Co. is the construction manager on the project,
which will replace the current 50-year-old Shriners
hospital in Frontenac. More than 100 local
tradesmen are being employed for an estimated
350,000 man hours in construction of the facility,
which began in April 2013.
Expanded space dedicated to the hospital’s
Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and Molecular
Research is a key feature of the four-story hospital.
John Gloss, hospital administrator, said the site
of the new hospital on the Washington U medical
campus will grant pediatric surgeons easier,
speedier access to young patients and promote
collaborative research. More than 90 physicians
are affiliated with Shriners in St. Louis, which had
2013 revenue of $9.2 million.
“This is a great opportunity to return to our roots

The Mirzan
2014 Potentate’s Message
The
summer
months have been
filled with many
activities and fun!
We have been
extra busy with picnics, golf tournaments, car shows,
provost
shoots,
parades and The
Kansas Shrine Bowl!
Starting
with
June we were busy with several club picnic’s
including Mirza’s family picnic! Kudos to
Ervins, Zortz’s and Hagerty’s for their work
and all who helped put the Mirza shrine family
picnic together. We had a great time. There were
several shrine children there and we got a great
picture of them. Enjoyed playing games and
talking with the Mirza hospital children.
The trip to Imperial was very informative and
the Twin Cities opened their arms to welcome
the Shriners. Meeting the Imperial ambassador children is always great! Hearing their stories and taking
photos with them makes our day special.
Shrine Bowl at our Temple City was wonderful!
I believe Stan Jahay, Steve Aemisegger, and Buck
Fischer with the help of the Potentates of 5 Temples
the Shrine bowl directors all did a fantastic job!!
We loved having the hospital kids come to Pittsburg.
That was fantastic seeing the shrine patients getting
to know them and see how they function with one
arm or leg is incredible. I am so glad we could make
a fun evening with them. We truly enjoyed the children at pizza night during Shrine Bowl and it was
not just the kids that had a great time with pizza, ice
cream and dancing!! Thank you Crawford County
Shrine Club and Daughters of the Nile for all the
work you did making it a success! Some of the parents told us our temple gave the best welcome dinner
to them they ever had! As usual Mirza does the best
Shrine Bowl again! Makes me truly proud of you all.
Central States was in Tulsa this year, I am proud
we had a great turn out for Mirza! Thank you to
all who came. Special thank you to the MG’s for
coming we can always count on you! To our Past
Potentate Darrell Orender, CSSA vice president
for keeping us informed. We want to thank all
nobles and ladies of Mirza for all the work you do
and for making Central States great every year! A
huge thank you to the uniformed unit’s president,
Dave Blessent & his lady Terri, 1st vice President
Tommy Tuggle and his lady Karen also to 2nd vice
president Steve Morrison and his lady Amanda! A
great feast at Central States!
Great job by our Parade Marshall Steve
Morrison at all the parades and excellent job at
Central States. We had an evening of out to eat
with the Potentate at Central States! Over 40+
people in attendance and we had a great time! We
took a private trolley over and back, that was fun!
What memories! Always good to have fun and
fellowship!
The Potentate Trip is set and we are packing and getting ready to go to the Dominican
Republic. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 5)

“SHRINERS - SUPERHEROES IN THE EYES OF CHILDREN”
Recorder’s Report
By Keith Carr, Recorder
Nobles, we need to increase our
membership. There are several ways to do
that.
1. Recruit New Candidates, for the Fall
Ceremonial on November 8th 2014.
2. Restore a former member, remind him
of the Philanthropic work we do and get him
Restored.
3. Retain our delinquent Nobles, there are
those who have not paid 2014 dues and 2015
dues notices are being prepared for mail out.
4. If you know of a Shriner who has moved
into our area, ask him to Affiliate with our
Temple and participate in our activities.
Check the center section of your calendar book for costs and fees.
We have received Chocolate Bars, so come by and pick up a case to
sell. Don’t forget the Stated Meeting on October 15th, get involved in your
Temple.
There are still more events and activities coming up, check your
calendar book, Mirza Shrine Web page or call any of the Divan members
if you have questions.
I have met so many great Nobles, and continue to meet more.
Thanks for your support, it is a lot of fun being your Recorder.
Call if you need help or have questions.
See you at the next Shrine event.

Over the past months we have met in Piqua, Iola, and Garnett. Our
meetings have been well attended and the various locations around the area
seems to work out very well for our group. Chief Rabban Ron Venus , club rep,
keeps us up to date on Mirza happenings and we appreciate his attendance. As
a note our meetings are always with Ladies invited.
Shrine Bowl in Pittsburg this year was awesome. It is great that our Temple
supports this event in so many ways. Southeast Kansas is football country for
sure. Additional parades at Garnett with hospitality provided by Dudley and
Carol Anne Feuerborn brought a full fire truck for the County Fair Parade. Our
group attended the Arma Parade and will have upcoming events at Elsmore
and Kincaid early in September.
We want to thank the nobles, communities, and supporters for the
hospitality provided at these events that we attend.
Be proud to be a Shriner and remember every day is membership day.

“SHRINERS - SUPERHEROES IN THE EYES OF CHILDREN”
Chefs
By Kenneth Webb
Greetings from the Mirza Chefs. Meetings are conducted on the second
Tuesday of each month at the Shrine Center in Pittsburg.
The Chefs have been extremely active so far in 2014. It hardly seems
possible that the year is nearly one-half over. Illustrious Potentate David
Smith is a member of the Chefs and the Chefs have been extra supportive of
the Potentate’s activities. The Potentate deserves all of the support the Chefs
can give, and so far everything has gone very well. Illustrious Sir David is
having a great year and the Chefs are excited about the activities of our Temple.
Cooking activities of the Chefs included cooking for the Annual Meeting
on January 16th for which brisket was prepared along with green beans, baked
potatoes and salad. For the Stated Meeting on April 16th, the Chefs served
tacos with salad. On June 8th, the Mirza Picnic was held in Pittsburg at Lincoln
Park and the Chefs had two cookers smoking with both hamburgers and hot
dogs for all of the shriners and kids that were in attendance. Weatherwise, the
day was nearly perfect for the picnic. The Chefs also cooked for the Players
Banquet on May 4th and for the Potentate’s Roast on May 10th. So far it has
been a great year.
The Crawford county Fair is always a major event for the Chefs. The
Chefs utilize their own concession trailer that was remodeled by members for
selling food at the fair. Hamburgers are grilled on the same grill that was used
in the 1106 Drive-In on South Broadway in Pittsburg. The Chefs home-made
Slovenian sausage is cooked over charcoal on Dave Blessent’s cooker, and
soda-pop and water are sold from a large water trough. Come to the fair and
stop by the Chef’s concession trailer.
The Chefs are becoming well known in Shrinedom for their sausage. Not
too spicy, but spicy enough. A better sausage cannot be found anywhere. The
Slovenian sausage is made in the garage/kitchen of one of the Chef’s original
founders, Tom Ales. Thanks to Emma Louise Ales for allowing us to continue
using the garage/kitchen. This year the Chefs will be taking orders for sausage
during October and early November for delivery shortly before Thanksgiving,
and then again in late November and early December for sausage to be
delivered before Christmas. Orders can be placed with any member of the
Unit.
Best Wishes from the Mirza Chefs

Jokers
By Marvin Long
The Joker Unit of Mirza meets on the fourth Sunday of the month all year
round. The Jokers are a clown group that consists of one active clown and
that is Jim Harkness, better known as Harkey. Harkey can be seen at parades,
especially the Neewollah parade, conventions, and park openings. However,
the entertainment he enjoys the most is working with the children in the Burn
Camp in Oklahoma. We are very proud of you Harkey. The rest of us have
just gotten too old to be able to parade, but we are thankful for the fun we had
entertaining children, supporting Mirza, and the Shrine hospitals.

Hospitals for Children — St. Louis.
Mark Miller, M.D., will see children with clubfeet, leg lengthening
needs and general orthopedic needs in the hospital’s
outpatient clinic on Tuesdays, and conduct surgeries on

including chief of staff, Perry L. Schoenecker, M.D.
and J. Eric Gordon, M.D. Dr. Miller earned his medical
degree at Harvard University and served his residency at the University of
Washington in Seattle at the department of orthopaedic surgery and sports
medicine.
Jeffrey Nepple, M.D., will focus on sports medicine
and patients with shoulder and hip conditions on
Thursdays at the hospital. Dr. Nepple earned his medical
degree at Washington University School of Medicine
and served his orthopaedic residency there as well. He
most recently served a fellowship in sports medicine
at the Steadman Clinic/Steadmon-Phillipon Research

surgeons and researchers, it represents an enormous
advantage as well as operational efficiencies for the
Shriners organization.”
The hospital’s curved metallic silver exterior is
adorned by with the Shriners’ signature “silent
messenger” logo in bright red. The symbolic image
communicates the organization’s message: “No
man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.”
Patient-friendly technology is an integral theme
throughout the design, according to John Reeve,
Christner’s president and CEO, and are dedicated to
the special population the hospital serves.
“This is a destination hospital for pediatric patients
with unusual conditions that often take many, many
years of medical care,” Reeve said. “The facility’s
design, its technologies and its emphasis toward
supporting the needs of young patients and their
families is evident in the work we’ve been honored
to perform for the Shriners organization.”

patients and the lobby has a giant interactive media
wall and lighted floors. Mike Usher, S.M. Wilson
project superintendent, said children will be able
to interact with a virtual beach ball, virtual helium
balloons and more in the lobby’s educational
activity area. A children’s library is also part of the
main reception space.
Because orthopedics is a visual practice, Shriners
records each patient’s progress with before, during
and after-care images such as gait videos, according
to Gloss. Patients range from infants to age 18.
Care at the new specialty hospital will include
but not be limited to patients enduring club foot;
scoliosis; hip dysplasia; hand, arm and shoulder
conditions; amputations; limb-length differences;
knee problems; metabolic bone diseases; juvenile
rheumatoid arthritis; spina bifida; and sports
injuries.
Physical therapy areas to teach patients how to
stretch their muscles and ligaments to accommodate
bone growth are key. Occupational therapy —
where patients learn how to be kids and play despite
their physical challenges — is central to the design
and construction.
Eight distinct family quarters will allow parents
and siblings to stay in-hospital while their young
family member receives care, Usher said.
A lounge exclusively for the hundreds of volunteer
van drivers bringing patients to and from the
hospital is part of the building design. The St. Louis
hospital’s service area spans nine states and is
supported by 21 Shrine Temples, Usher said.
Three surgical suites, four fitting rooms for
prosthetics and physical and occupational therapy,
child life, radiology, respiratory therapy, pain
management and social services are inherent in the
new hospital.
Positioning of the cornerstone will be celebrated
Oct. 5. Shriners Hospitals for Children began
accepting reimbursement for care from third-party
payers in mid-2010, but continues to provide care
for all children, regardless of families’ ability to pay.
