A message from the administrative team…
Parking
At the expense of being repetitive, please be respectful of others
while dropping off and picking up your child(ren). We recognize that
Kanaka Way and the parking lot get very congested at the beginning
and end of the school day; but everyone needs to be patient and
behave in a courteous and considerate manner, not only to be good role
models for our children, but to ensure their safety as well.

DO NOT PARK IN THE DROP OFF ZONE AT THE SIDE OF
THE SCHOOL AND WALK YOUR CHILD TO THEIR
CLASSROOM. Even though it may be more convenient for you,
parking in this area impedes the flow of traffic and makes it
more difficult for others to drop off or pick up their children.
It is important that if you need to wait with your child that you
find a parking spot in the lot or on the road.
DO NOT DOUBLE PARK ALONG KANAKA WAY OR IN THE
SCHOOL PARKING LOT. This practice jeopardizes the safety
of the students as they often run in front of parked cars.
Pro D Day
Just a reminder that Friday, September 25 is a professional
day at Kanaka Creek. There will be no school for students on
that day.

Newsletters
Me to We
Seventeen of our Grade 6 & 7 students and
three of our teachers from Kanaka Creek
School will be joining schools throughout the
province in attending the Me to We
Conference that is being held at GM Place on
Tuesday, September 29th. This conference
is a fantastic opportunity for our students
to be involved in a national event that
celebrates the power of young people to
change the lives of others. The event will
feature a series of inspirational and
motivational speeches by top leadership and
social issues activists, speakers and
entertainers. Students will be encouraged
to bring their experiences back to the
school and establish a plan for the school to
take action through Free the Children
campaigns to raise awareness and funds for
local and international initiatives. To watch
live on line go to CTV.ca/Weday.
All subsequent school newsletters will be issued
on the last Friday of each month and will be sent
home with the youngest child in your family.

Friends In Need
Curran Karate Fundraiser
Once again Kanaka Creek School
will be pitching in to help those in
need. We will be collecting
non-perishable food products
during the week of October 5-9th. Boxes will
be placed in every classroom for students to
drop off food products. The Friends In Need
Food Bank will collect the boxes on Friday,
October 9 to distribute the food for the
Thanksgiving weekend. Thank you in advance
for your generous donations.
On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Ron
Curran from Curran Karate was in to do a
short workshop with the students from
Kindergarten to Grade 7 on how to deal with
conflict in an appropriate and confident
manner. The students seemed to really
enjoy the sessions. Ron is offering to all
Kanaka Creek students an opportunity to
participate in a 4 week course, including a
uniform, for the cost of $49.00. All the
proceeds are given to Kanaka Creek School
and will be distributed for use by classroom
teachers. If your child did not
bring home a participation
form regarding this
opportunity, additional forms
are available on the parent
newsstand in the front foyer.
Grade 7 Leaving Ceremony
There will be a meeting for all interested
parents of Grade 7 students to help fundraise
and plan the year end school leaving ceremony
for students moving on to Seconday School
next fall. The meeting will be held on
Wednesday, October 7 at 7 pm in
the school library.
Parent’s Math Night
Lunch Lady
Just a reminder that if you order Lunch
Lady for your child(ren) that they still
require a snack for the 10:15 recess
break.
Terri Maltais, School District #42 Numeracy Facilitator, is organizing a parent math evening to be
held in our school gym on Thursday, October 15 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Stations will be setup
demonstrating games that parents can use at home with their child to teach and
reinforce various math skills. Eight games appropriate for primary students and
eight games for intermediate students will be demonstrated. Please call the office
and let us know if you will be attending so we can prepare the appropriate amount
of materials. Come on out and join in the fun and learn some simple games that
you can play with your child to strength their basic math understanding.
School Closures
The Board of Education of School District No. 42 is considering closing Riverside and Mount
Crescent elementary schools. Interested parties are invited to attend public information meetings
at Riverside on October 6 and Mount Crescent on October 8, at 7 pm. These meetings are a follow
up to meetings held in April and May. For more information visit the district website:
www.sc42.ca/school-closure. Comments and suggestions can submitted on line at
www.sd42.ca/talk-back or by calling 604.466.6206.
