Born and brought up in a small Brazilian village, his life changed dramatically at the age of 10 when his father disappeared and his family was mysteriously evicted from their home in the middle of the night. This early experience marked the beginning of an unconventional life that took Henderson to Sao Paolo, London and finally on to all four corners of the globe. canal-side café Hand Embellished Canvas, Image Size 32” x 25”, Edition Size 195, FRAMED £650 view of st paul’s It was in London though that Henderson found his metier. He spent days pounding the city’s pavements and getting to know its architecture, people and weather. His work still owes much to these early days, with an emphasis on autumnal skies, brightly lit shop fronts and slick pavements. Influenced by artists from Turner to Rothko, Graham paints the sky because “it has such a profound effect on us as human beings. We have such a strong connection with the sun and the sky that it can influence our mood, and also trigger a sense of wonder.” Graham was born in London in 1965. He completed an Art and Design Masters degree at Central Saint Martin’s (London) in 1997, where he attained a distinction. He has gone on to be a highly successful independent artist; his paintings have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh. Graham has been a finalist in the prestigious BP Portrait Award two years in a row, and his work is in collections across the UK and Europe. But instead, the UK’s most collectable modern master is now producing some of the best artwork of his life. He is also working on a much-anticipated book to commemorate his long and celebrated career as an artist and national treasure. ‘Windswept Lion’ is a superb new wildlife portrait that showcases a characteristic deployment of bold colours and spontaneous brushstrokes. Rolf captures the power and latent energy of this majestic animal with his trademark combination of technical brilliance and warm affection. ‘Windswept Lion’ is available in the gallery now as a signed Limited Edition Fine Art Print both on canvas and paper. Taking the four seasons as his starting point he has chosen a signature colour for each exquisite forest scene and used it to capture the prevailing mood from the time of year. The lush green of spring conveys an optimistic sense of new beginnings, while the blazing summer sun creates a golden aura of heat and light. The glowing vision of autumn is suffused with the scarlet of an October sunset and the winter hues of charcoal and white introduce a more spacious aspect to the scene. While each individual composition has an enticing depth that pulls the viewer in, the collection comes into its own when viewed as a whole; drop by the gallery to experience this extraordinary kaleidoscope of colour. Asencio’s work always begins with a ‘gesture drawing’; he then mixes colour and applies the oils according to his temperament. As well as brushes and a palette knife he uses a range of unconventional tools, thereby transforming a traditional painting into one possessing his cutting edge signature style. Close up these paintings are all about modernity, with their bold juxtapositions of strident blocks of colour and aggressive painterly texture. But take a step back, and they fuse into figurative images of unexpected, sometimes overwhelming beauty. Highlighting each image with this wonderful new gloss means that they hold and reflect the light in a completely different way, and has made me look at my own work through new eyes.” Danielle’s work has always turned heads, but her new statement collection makes a whole new impression on the viewer. These exhilarating florals are overlaid with a stunning new high gloss resin which makes the scarlet and cyan blooms fairly dance off the canvas. While his compositions have always had great drama and immediacy, the almost metallic sheen and shimmering surface of each individual piece gives an unprecedented impact to these ultra-stylish, contemporary editions. Ranging from evocative coastal landscapes to exhilarating representations of sailing through the wind, these compelling images confirm Duncan’s position as the UK’s most exciting and innovative contemporary marine artist. His distinctive white sails, majestic skies and sparkling reflections combine to form spellbinding narratives of life on the coast and at sea. The eye-catching beach huts near Duncan’s home have always attracted him and in these vibrant portrayals his painterly style and bold tonal juxtapositions generate a great sense of movement and energy. Her work is characterised by a total fluidity of style that depends entirely on the casting being completed in a single stage. As the molten glass begins to solidify she intervenes in the cooling process, shaping it into beautiful and stylish sculptural forms by hand. Each piece of glass is therefore a subtle collaboration between artistry and chemistry. Unusually, Amanda produces all the raw materials used to colour each composition herself, and the way the pigment collects and travels through the glass ensures that each is a unique and original work of art. Born in 1964, Amanda graduated from London’s Central School of Art and Design with a 1st Class Honours degree and went on to take up two scholarships: first to the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and then to the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Amanda’s work is held in collections across Europe and the USA, and she has received a variety of prestigious awards including one from the Lord Mayor of London. frozen water Hand-made sand cast glass sculpture from Amanda Brisbane in the gallery now frozen water i Original Glass Sculpture, Size 18”, £750 frozen water ii Original Glass Sculpture, Size 18”, £750 24 25 Graceful Interlude Between REHERSALS P r i vat e c o l l e c t i o n The Private Collection stands at the vanguard of fine art publishing, creating an attractive new stratum of collectable artwork for the contemporary market. Sweet Refrain Each image is limited to a highly exclusive edition size of 49, and is graced with uniquely detailed hand-embellishment. It is then given the superb presentation traditionally accorded to an original painting with the finest crafted frame. To celebrate the launch of this new concept in fine art publishing, the inaugural Private Collection features four beautiful figurative images of music and dance from Sherree Valentine Daines. “Anyone who engages with my work can trace the influence of the Impressionist Movement but it is perhaps not obvious that to me this means more than just paintings. Whether we are talking about the music of Debussy or the ballet dancers of Degas, impressionism has made a huge cultural impact, and of course a great personal impact on me. I think of my own work as fitting into this context of artistic endeavour, and this set of paintings reflects my love of the arts as a whole.” Sherree’s masterly compositions have earned her a formidable reputation as the face of modern British impressionism, and the Private Collection provides the perfect forum for her award-winning artwork. Although they depict specific and often recognisable locations, their particular brilliance lies in the creation of atmosphere rather than the accuracy of detail. By merging colours and blurring the reflected light in the rain-slicked streets, Csilla conveys the fastmoving essence of her chosen subject in her own distinctive way. Csilla was born in 1961 in Budapest, Hungary. She graduated from the University of Budapest in 1984 with a Masters Degree in Art and followed this up with a year as a scholarship student in the former USSR. After spending much of her twenties travelling around Europe she finally settled in the UK. She has participated in many international exhibitions, and in 2004 she received the ‘Genius Talent Prize’ in Budapest at the exhibition celebrating the entry of Hungary into the European Union. His award-winning paintings have made him the artist of choice for many international art collectors and hang in both public and private collections including those of the House of Lords, Downing Street and St James’s Palace. The last year has been a landmark one for Darren, with his unique status confirmed by two highly prestigious invitations. He has been appointed an official artist to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and he has been commissioned to paint an official portrait of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, an accolade only accorded to a small number of painters in the monarch’s lifetime. The Art of Investment... siren i siren ii Canvas Edition, Image Size 11” x 15”, Edition Size 195, FRAMED £275 Financial commentators tell us that when the mainstream markets are in turmoil, we start to look around for alternative investments. It can be a lot more rewarding to own something tangible, be it art, wine or violins, than a share certificate, and art is currently occupying the number one spot. There are few more enjoyable asset classes, and with art there is the added advantage that its financial value does not diminish with use. Recent headlines have shown that the top end of the art market is thriving; a water lily painting by Monet recently sold for over £40 million, just a few weeks after Roman Abramovich paid £60 million for a Francis Bacon and a Lucian Freud. But for those of us operating on a more realistic financial level things are also looking good, and there is some immensely desirable artwork out there for anyone looking to start or build a contemporary art collection. Our portfolio this season has been created with today’s collector in mind. We have commissioned a wide range of original paintings to cross the whole spectrum of price points, and the published work includes some innovative new collectables such as glass editions and some amazing spray can art. We have also launched individual collections which offer something different, such as the highly exclusive ‘Private Collection’. So whatever direction you wish to follow with your own collection, call in to the gallery to view a whole range of exciting alternatives. And remember the golden rule; never buy just for an investment - buy because you love it. If it’s a good artist and good work, then the investment will take care of itself. 30 31 riviera dreams i The landscape and architecture of Italy has inspired artists for centuries, and while genres and styles have moved in and out of fashion, Italian art has always remained on the cultural agenda. But in recent years it has enjoyed a particular surge in popularity amongst art collectors, thanks to the work of a group of some of the most highly-regarded artists on the contemporary scene. These artists are based all over the world, yet each one has an affinity for the country they paint, and they all bring their own highly personal interpretation to the subject. The Modern Renaissance Bruno Tinucci is known for his inspirational contemporary depictions of the Tuscan landscape, so these two glorious florals represent a new departure for him. Yet although they are more focused studies of their subject, the dazzling sunflowers and elegant lilies clearly inhabit his signature rural setting, and stand out boldly against a stunning Tuscan sky. Peter’s sophisticated Italian oils are characterised by a highly expressive, painterly technique and display a structural clarity and atmospheric impact that few contemporary artists can hope to rival. As one of the most illustrious painters on the contemporary scene he exhibits regularly at prestigious art venues including the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the New England Art Club and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters of which he was recently elected president. His artistic achievements have been recognised with various accolades including the Frank Herring award at the Mall Galleries in London and the Cornellisen Prize for Outstanding Work. The dazzling illumination combines with the strong impression of movement to create an explosion of energy on the canvas. Light is the unifying factor in all of Julie Ann’s work, originating in the sight of the sun breaking through the misty darkness. This first blissful moment of light inspires the artist from both an aesthetic and a spiritual viewpoint. Log on for more information on new signing Julie Ann Scott. POOLS OF LIGHT II Julie Ann grew up in the UK, but as soon as she could she set off to see the world and spent an eventful and adventurous few years abroad. After working as a catwalk model in Israel, touring as an actress in California, and travelling around much of Eastern Europe she returned to England and settled in the Lake District, where she set up a studio. Since then she has not looked back and her work has been exhibited to great acclaim across the UK. His distinctive still lives invite us to take a second look at some of the familiar elements of modern life and explore them from a new perspective. Spurning the conventional glassware and traditional bowls of fruit he comes down firmly in favour of items found on the 21st century kitchen table, giving his work the sort of confident charm that allows it to sit anywhere, from a stylish dining room to a welcoming kitchen. Hand Embellished Canvas, Image Size 14” x 14”, Edition Size 195, FRAMED £240 FAR HORIZONS I FAR HORIZONS II contemporary miniatures Since his work was launched into the UK art market last year, seascape maestro Philip Raskin has become a familiar name in galleries across the UK. His romantic view of the world includes no evidence of human life, but invites the viewer to experience complete immersion in the image. Philip was born in 1947 and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He then entered the world of business and became well known as the proprietor of The Inn on the Green, a celebrated jazz restaurant in Glasgow over which he and his wife presided. He did not lose contact with the world of art however, as the venue doubled up as a quality gallery with a full programme of exhibitions and private views. After 20 years as a successful restaurateur, Philip returned to his easel and brushes on a full time basis. Over time, he has developed a painterly impasto style; using the texture of the paint and the shape of the brushwork, he gives each of his luminous landscapes its own reality, rather than allowing it to be a smooth window onto a world beyond. With a trademark soft palette and dramatic skies, the overall effect magically captures the textures, moods and changeable light of his native Scotland. Philip is rapidly acquiring a loyal following of collectors both in the UK and abroad. “I tend to paint very private places for people to own and enjoy; no population, no houses, no telegraph poles - just the driftwood of an ebb tide, mist tumbling on a distant hilltop and silence broken only by lapping water and gulls ascending.” Hand Embellished Canvas, Image Size 12” x 12”, Edition Size 195, FRAMED £195 Sweet Temptation I 36 37 saba at las brujas Hand Embellished Canvas, Image Size 22” x 18”, Edition Size 195, FRAMED £750 Fabián Pérez Up Close and Personal With this new pair of figurative images, Fabian Perez invites us to experience the intoxicating atmosphere of Buenos Aires through the characters that inhabit its exotic nightscape. While sensuality and intensity are key, there is also a sophistication and intelligence to his shadowy figures which implies something beyond the purely visual. His charismatic men and seductive women seem to be part of a wider narrative, one which embraces mystery, eroticism and drama. Fabian has recently released a short documentary film about his life and work, which introduces us some of the people and places that have helped to form his creative outlook. Although she was born and educated in England, Lesley has lived most of her adult life in Germany, Switzerland and the USA. Having originally trained as a scientist and worked in various fields of scientific research, she formed her love of horses while visiting a friend’s Stud in the United States. Despite her early love of painting and drawing, it took this encounter with an inspirational subject to reignite her passion for art, and it was here that she once again began to paint. Taking the spirited Arabian horses around her as her subject, she was soon producing work of great power and drama.
