April 2011 - Lions District 14A Pennsylvania
14-Announcer April 2011 Page 1 District Governor’s Message Hello fellow Lions. Lionesses and Leos Well, Spring has sprung, the robins are back and the tulips are trying to bloom but Mother Nature is not sure what she wants to do. As we look forward to warmer days and more sunshine and the prospect of mowing grass, planting flowers and enjoying the earth coming to life again, we as Lions should feel a renewal of spirit to charge on with our course of service. As IP Scruggs stated in the Lions magazine, we as Lions have been doing the same things for so many years we are on “Autopilot”! It’s time for us to take charge and maybe change course back to service. It is time to review our community needs, to recruit new members, to form a new club for a neighboring community and to reintroduce having fun. At the district convention we will be telling you about the Club Excellence Program and how it is a tool to give your club a checkup. This month the Global Campaign is on “Protecting the Environment”. According to IP Scruggs only 20% of the world’s population has access to clean drinking water. Of the 6,000 people who die daily from water-related illness, the vast majority are children. Another fact that may surprise you is 2.6 billion people who share our planet are without adequate sanitation facilities. How little we appreciate our ability to cook with it, shower with it, fill our swimming pools, water our lawns and gardens without ever giving a thought to it except for the cost. In conjunction with Earth Day (April 22) we Lions need to consider planning a recycling collection day, community park cleanup, or picking up litter on the highways. We also can protect our environment by: Planting trees and flowers Recycling batteries, cell phones, computers or TVs Carpooling or minimizing trips to the store Work with scout troops to preserve the environment Raise money to supply clean drinking water to Third World countries. Honor Earth Day by adopting these good-for-the-planet habits; Buy locally grown foods and walk more These help eliminate some of the carbon dioxide emissions thereby saving the ozone. Check out www.lionsclubs.org for ideas on service projects as a Green Team. Lastly, remember our District Convention occurs the end of April on the 29 th and 30th. Come out and enjoy the friendship and fellowship with Lions from your district. Also attend to have your voice heard during the voting. Wishing you a very Happy Easter and Passover. Ehrenzeller April 19th Awards Banquet Registration Form TO: Lions of Pennsylvania, Multiple District 14 PID Harold wishes to express his deepest gratitude to the Lions of Pennsylvania for the support you have afforded him and his campaign for President of Lions Clubs International. It is with sadness that we must tell you, PID Harold has officially withdrawn his name as a candidate for that office. This was a profoundly difficult decision, but one he felt he needed to make on the advice of his doctors. A short time ago, PID Harold went into the hospital for a routine CAT scan. To everyone’s surprise, the scan revealed that he had a tumor on the right side of the brain just behind my ear. A few days later, doctors operated to remove the tumor. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation therapy, which--while slow--is progressing positively. PID Harold and Lion Barb wish to thank all the Lions of Pennsylvania for their loyalty and friendship. The Lions in Pennsylvania are a great TEAM, working for a common goal, by practicing our motto “We Serve”. PID Harold, as 2nd Vice President, would have served all the Lions of the world and would have worked to make our world better for our fellow man. PID Harold enthusiastically looks forward to the day when he will be able to rejoin his fellow Lions in fellowship and community service. He will never be able to adequately thank you for the many and varied kinds of support from the Lions of Pennsylvania. Please keep PID Harold and his wife Lion Barb in your thoughts and prayers; this will help toward his speedy recovery. He will be unable to receive any phone calls for the immediate future but e-mails are welcome all the time even though he will not be able to respond immediately. Get well wishes may be sent to: PID Harold Ott 1410 Estate Dr. Boalsburg, PA 16827 Past International Director Ott has officially resigned as a candidate for the position of 2nd International Vice President and his campaign committee will be dissolved shortly. Donations will be returned to all who have contributed. The motion to place a resolution on the ballot at the State Convention for an assessment of $1 per member for four years to support the campaign has been recinded. It has also been approved to send the All State Band to the International Convention in Seattle this summer. April 2011 District 14-Announcer Page 11 My Dear Fellow Lions Lionesses and Leos of District 14-A, I am deeply humbled by the generous outpouring of support from Lions worldwide to my call last week to donate funds to the Foundation's Japan Relief Fund. Already, LCIF has received donations or commitments exceeding US$6 million, including US$3 million that the Lions of Japan are working to raise themselves during their own crisis. Again, it's so very humbling to see such compassion by the network of caring Lions and Leos worldwide. I thank all who have already donated from the bottom of my heart. With the expected death toll now exceeding 18,000 and rising, the devastation is clearly greater than anyone could have imagined. And more than 400,000 people are still in shelters, in the cold, often going without a hot meal for days on end. Now that the roads have re-opened, Lions from all over Japan are sending relief aid from every corner of the country -- 30 tons of rice is being sent from Sapporo, US$50,000 worth of baby formula from Hokkaido, and women's health products from the southern area of Shikoku - all through the Lions network in Japan. Within a day of the disaster, many courageous clubs distributed 20 tons of food, water and emergency supplies, despite great risks and challenges to themselves. Even our Lions blue-colored relief tents are being delivered to give shelter for Lions volunteers and other relief workers in the hardest-hit areas. To distribute the aid effectively, the Lions of Japan quickly set up four Lions relief aid warehouses in affected areas. Lions are coordinating relief aid distribution with local government officials and with the Japanese Red Cross. As a result, Lions are helping coordinate blood donation campaigns within Japan. As you know, we have 31 Lions clubs in Sendai - the largest city affected by the quake and nearly a club in every town up and down the coastline. Whether it's clothes and food today, or shelter next week, or a wheel chair the week after, Lions will be there to give dignity to those who have suffered such unimaginable pain and suffering. While many of you have already generously donated, for which I am very thankful, please encourage your fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends to also donate. Please know that every donation will be put to careful use, and 100 percent will go to the cause. ALSO, DONATIONS RECEIVED BETWEEN MARCH 11 AND JUNE 30, 2011 WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR MELVIN JONES FELLOWSHIPS. I am again humbled by your generosity to date. The Lions of Japan have always been there for the rest of us in times of need. So I am proud of you, and never prouder to be a Lion, when we come to their aid in the wake of this historic, awful tragedy. With my cordial regards, Eberhard J. Wirfs Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation April 2011 District 14-Announcer Page 12 WE STILL NEED YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS Club secretaries please send the e-mail addresses to PDG Jim Harrington at [email protected] to expand our list of addresses to send the monthly newsletter. This will keep your club members informed of district and state news. APRIL IS LEO CLUB AWARENESS MONTH Leo advisors and chairpersons: Please spread the word about the Leo Club Program. Work with your Leo Clubs to organize a joint Leo-Lion community service project. Remember, Leo Clubs prepare young people for a lifetime of leadership and service. Please send a monthly report regarding your Leo Club activities so that it can be placed in the Announcer and everyone can see the good work they are doing. PA LIONS BEACON LODGE NEEDS YOUR HELP Beacon Lodge, along with many other organizations in Pennsylvania, has lost its State Appropriation because of budget cuts. For the Camp it means a loss of $120,000 in income this year. Lions and Lioness Clubs across the state are being asked to donate $200 above the amount they usually donate for camperships to help cover the loss. Also, it is time for clubs to send in their payment to become a member of the “500 Club”. The cost is $5 per member for a year. In addition, if some of your members want to become Life Members, there is a onetime cost of $100 per member. This is also an excellent way for a club to recognize one or more of its outstanding members. All of these donations will help with the general maintenance of the Camp. Checks should be sent directly to PDG John Saudarg (Phila and Delaware County) or Lion Estella Kristiniak (Bucks County) to assure proper accounting. PA ALL STATE BAND GOING TO INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION The Band will be attending the International Convention in Seattle this July. Please pass the flyer on the next page to your local high school music director. Please have the director contact PDG Jim Harrington ([email protected]) for application forms.
