McGuire Thanked for Over Twenty Years of Service
Jim McGuire
On June 1, 2011, James McGuire, one of the Education Foundation’s founding Trustees, resigned from
the Board to commit time and attention to local causes in the Lorain County community where he resides. Jim
had been a dedicated advocate for the Foundation since its inception in 1989, and has served as Trustee
since that time. McGuire served on the Foundation’s Audit and Investment Committees, ensuring that
investments were handled according to financial policies agreed to by the Grantor of the Foundation and the
Board of Trustees. Of the Education Foundation, McGuire stated, “The Foundation has grown in scope,
commitment to the community, talented and dedicated staff, committed and dedicated volunteers, donors and
in resources to accomplish its several missions...I feel privileged to have been allowed to be part of this
dynamic resource for the community.” McGuire currently works for the Department of Homeland Security.
Trustee John Waltman, as a friend and on behalf of other fellow Trustees, had the following to say about Mr.
McGuire’s efforts: “We are very appreciative of the time and individual input Mr. McGuire provided the
Foundation during Board of Trustee and Advisory Board meetings and retreats, as well as the investment
management process... I would personally like to extend my gratitude to Jim for his service.”
Roach Honored as
Friend of
Philanthropy
Garrett Roach has been a long-time
friend of the Holmes County Education
Foundation. He was recognized by
the Foundation Board of Trustees as
the recipient of the 2011 Friend of
Philanthropy Award. Board Chairman
John Waltman stated, “Since Garrett
Roach, a Holmes County native, returned
to practice law at Critchfield Law Firm,
he has been a strong supporter of the
Holmes County Education Foundation.
Garrett not only has given his personal
financial support, he has educated and
encouraged his clients on the benefits of
supporting the Foundation. The Holmes
County Education Foundation is grateful
and thankful to Mr. Roach.”
Roach began his career as an attorney
in 1992 with the Critchfield Law Firm.
His practice areas include: Real Estate,
Estate Planning and Administration,
and Corporate/Business.
Several
scholarship funds created with the
Holmes County Education Foundation
over the years have been the result of
Garrett matching his clients’ charitable intent
with the local nonprofit. The end result has
been many local youths receiving scholarships
to attend college and the donors achieving
satisfaction in their giving while obtaining
favorable tax benefits.
“We created this
new award as a way to honor an individual
to recognize their philanthropic support and
efforts that have changed the lives of young
people in our community. We are very happy to
present this award to Garrett. He is extremely
deserving of this designation,” stated Darla
Stitzlein Foundation Executive Director.
Trustee Mike Taylor, a friend and colleague,
commented, “On behalf of the Board of
Trustees we would like to thank Garrett Roach
for his efforts in support of the Education
Foundation. It is through people like Garrett
that the Foundation continues to grow and
provide needed scholarships to the youth of
Holmes County. Thanks, Garrett, for being a
friend of the Foundation.”
Roach has been an active member of his
community for many years. He has served on
many nonprofit boards and is currently a Trustee
of the Holmes County Community Foundation,
Elder with First Presbyterian Church, and Board
Member of the Holmes County Chamber of
Commerce. He resides in Millersburg with his
wife Nikki and their three children. He enjoys
attending his children’s school and sporting
events, fly fishing, and hunting.

The Foundation has had the privilege of having Wayne
Leininger volunteer for us on a weekly basis since 2010!
Now affectionately dubbed “Wayne Wednesday,” the
middle of the week is full of stories and “Wayne-isms,”
and of course, much
needed volunteer help!

Dear Friends,
We are proud to have served in the capacity of Trustees for the past year and are
pleased to present you with our 2011 Annual Report. We saw a slight improvement
in the 2011 economy. We maintained our 5% commitment in annual award
distributions. With regard to our investment policy, we maintained a conservative
and diversified investment style. While our investments in U.S. equities and fixed
assets performed well, we posted a -0.46% consolidated return for the year due to
the negative performance of our international equity exposure and the global
uncertainties. We anticipate a better return in 2012 with a revised investment
strategy.
The year 2011 marked the 20th year of awarding scholarships to local students. We
awarded more than $314,000 to new and renewing students. Our college access
program continued to make an impact in increasing the college-going mindset of
Holmes County and is an excellent resource for the community. Sixty-three percent
of the county graduating seniors planned to pursue a higher education degree. Our
college access advisor met with 77 students throughout the year and provided
assistance on college applications, college selection and financial aid.
We continued to provide educational classes through the Amish Vocational Training
Program. Two classes were held in Commercial Small Engines and Large Tractor
Engine Overhaul. The program has been well received and offers new skills and
opportunities. We’ve seen local businesses begin to hire our students for the skills
they have acquired in these classes.
Three new community members were welcomed to our Foundation Advisory Board
as two dedicated volunteers went off due to their terms expiring. We are so
appreciative to these individuals for providing valuable assistance and advice to the
Board of Trustees as we continue to strive for excellence within the Foundation.
We regretfully accepted the resignation of Trustee James McGuire. Jim had served
as a Trustee since 1989 and had served on the Foundation’s Audit and Investment
Committees. Jim left to commit time and attention to local causes in the Lorain
County community where he resides. His financial wisdom was a huge asset to the
Board and he will be missed.
To honor an individual whose philanthropic support and efforts have changed the
lives of young people in our community, we created the Friend of Philanthropy Award.
We are happy to have given this honor to local attorney Garrett Roach.
We are very fortunate to have a Foundation in Holmes County that makes an impact
on the lives of so many young people. Our sincere and grateful appreciation goes
out to all who have generously supported the Holmes County Education Foundation.
We hope you continue to support the mission of the Foundation by giving currently
and by remembering us in your estate planning documents. Your continued support
touches the lives of those in need of financial aid to further their education. Thank

Advisory Board News
New Advisory Board Members. The Education Foundation welcomed (first photo: L-R) Arline
Radden, Ray Miller and Julian Coblentz to its Advisory Board. Ms. Radden recently retired from
her position as Director from the Holmes County District Public Library, Miller works for Eagle
Machinery & Supply, and Coblentz for Walnut Creek Foods. The Foundation is pleased to have
these new members on board, and is appreciative to have their insight and expertise.
Resigning Board Members. The Foundation would also like to thank members (photos, far right,
top to bottom) Margret Schlichting and Bruce Stambaugh for both serving on the Advisory Board
for six years. Stambaugh is a retired educator and Schlichting a retired business woman, but
neither are by any means slowing down in their contributions to the community! While on the
Advisory Board, both offered unique suggestions, opinions, and perspectives.

The Holmes County Education Foundation is proud to have awarded $90,600** in scholarships to first-year recipients for the 2011-2012 academic year.
An additional $223,674 was awarded to renewing scholarship recipients. Recipients still had an unmet need of over $318,663 despite receiving this
assistance from the Foundation. Thanks to all Holmes County students who participated this year, the donors, community members, and educators who
make the scholarships possible, and to the HCEF Trustees and committee for participating in the scholarship selection process.

You are a true blessing. Your very generous
donation is making a huge impact on my life. I knew
I wanted to go into health care to help people. After
researching and praying, I found that pharmacy was
the perfect fit. I visited the different colleges, trying to
see which one would guide me to be the most helpful
and successful pharmacist possible. [One university]
stuck out immediately. With its history, great facultyto-student ratio and hands-on classes, I knew that
this was the university for me. Unfortunately, such a
great learning experience comes at a high cost. I
was really worried about how I could pay for this. The
school did give me a scholarship, but it still left a huge
chunk of tuition for me to cover. I started secondguessing myself. I wondered if this was really where
I was meant to go. I knew that this seemed like the
perfect fit for me, but perhaps I needed to look
elsewhere. I continued praying that God would help
me either figure out how I was to pay for everything,
or that He would show me where He really wanted
me...I [now] see that God has a plan to help me with
your tremendous gift.
You are making it possible for me to go to the
University of my dreams and to study the profession

How time flies! Just yesterday (twenty years ago), people were sporting Trapper Keepers at school,
collecting Beanie Babies, watching the infamous sideburn-clad guys of Beverly Hills 90210, and standing
in line to purchase the most wanted Christmas toy of the year, Tickle Me Elmo. The year 1991 was also a
benchmark year for the Holmes County Education Foundation. Just two years after its creation, the
Foundation began granting graduating high school seniors with scholarships. Since that time, the Foundation
has expanded its scope of giving by including non-traditional students, as well as providing renewable
scholarships to Holmes County students with financial need.
Two students who received that first year were Lori (Gilt) Pringle and Kurt Miller. Both Pringle and Miller
graduated from West Holmes High School in 1991. Lori attended Ashland University where she earned
her Bachelor’s in elementary education (1995) and Master of Education, and then completed a Licensure
program in Library Media from Kent State University in 2001. She currently serves as District Library
Media Coordinator with Hiland High/Middle School. “Although my title is not ‘teacher,’” Pringle states, “I
am very much [an] educator. Each work day, I find myself educating students, staff and myself. Education
has opened doors to opportunities for me...Without ongoing education, I would not be able to hold my
current position [at Hiland High School].”
Kurt graduated from Bowling Green State University (1996) with a Bachelor’s degree in International
Business. “[My educational experience] has enabled me to market myself as a qualified candidate when
applying for my current job,” Miller states. Kurt currently works for Hastings Mutual Insurance Company as
Senior Field Claim Representative. He meets with policy holders to assess, estimate and settle property
damage claims.
Both Pringle and Miller wished to return to the Holmes County area. “I wanted to stay close to family
and also to have my kids attend West Holmes schools,” Kurt stated.
“I love the small town atmosphere of Holmes County,” Pringle added. “My husband and I value family
and love living in the same county as our extended families.”
Both Pringle and Miller agree that the Education Foundation, though just beginning, was instrumental on
helping them with their personal educational journeys. “Receiving the scholarship allowed me to pursue my
educational goals by relieving some of the financial burden of going to college,” Kurt stated.
Pringle agreed, stating, “With the funds graciously given by the Foundation, I was able to attend the
college of my choice.”
The Foundation has aged gracefully in the past twenty years! We continue to provide key opportunities
such as scholarships, vocational classes for the Amish population, professional development to Holmes
County businessmen and women, and college access services. Time flies, and we’re having fun!

Amish Program Thrives in 2011. Two-thousand and eleven proved to be a busy year for the Foundation’s Amish
Vocational Training Program. The year began with a Commercial Small Engine class on February 22. Eight students
in this class learned how to properly disassemble, troubleshoot, check problem areas, restore and completely overhaul
commercial engines. The overhaul included the engine clutches, transmissions, pistons and rings, plus electrical systems.
A graduation for this class was held on May 17th, where students invited family members and showed off their engine
projects.
The Foundation was also represented at the 11th annual Doughty Valley Steam Days in Charm, July 21-23. This
show included live demonstrations of steam-powered engines, threshing, baling, plowing and sawing. Visitors were
able to see the results from one of the Foundation’s Amish Vocational class, a 1010 Industrial John Deere tractor, owned
by Jonas Mast and restored by the 2010 Engine Restoration class, taught by instructor John Roberts (pictured).
Fall ended well as eight Amish students participated in and graduated from the Large Tractor Engine Overhaul:
Beginning Diesel class. This was the twenty-fourth class provided by the Foundation’s Amish Vocational Training Program.
Students focused on advanced internal 4-stroke cycle engines, with an emphasis on crank shafts, cam shafts, bearings,
pistons, rings, ignition systems, disassembly measurements, and reassembly.
GED Vouchers Provided to Local Career Centers. The Buckeye Career Center and the Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center both thanked the
Foundation for providing money for vouchers for their students to take the GED. At Buckeye, 58 scholarships have been issued so far. “Without your generosity
and support,” stated ABLE teacher Debbie Immel, “these people might not be able to take their GED test. This has provided them greater opportunity to
become employed and/or enrolled in post-secondary education.” The Ashland County–West Holmes Career Center received $1,000 from the Foundation,
and was able to award 4 Holmes County students with GED scholarships. “The GED diploma is unquestionably the key to employment for many who have few
job options without it, and the GED is a prerequisite to post-secondary training and education,” stated Jim Bargar, former Ashland County–West Holmes Career
Center ABLE representative.
2011 Special Events
Patten Poker Run. The 7th Annual Patten Poker Run was held on Saturday, June 11th. Sign up began at the Millersburg
American Legion, and included five various stops throughout the day. The run covered 106 miles and ended at the
Patten Family farm with a chicken barbecue and a concert by the band Outlaw. Approximately 100 bikers attended
the event. The Poker Run earned over $1,600 for the William H. Patten III Memorial Scholarship fund, held at the
Education Foundation. Since the fund was created in 2005, the Patten Scholarship fund has grown to over $18,000,
and $3,000 has been awarded to six graduating high school seniors pursuing education or business.
Frenette-Rickly Golf Scramble. On June 26, the 12th Annual Aimee Frenette-Rickly Memorial Golf Scramble was held
at Fire Ridge Golf Course in Millersburg. One hundred and forty golfers arrived for a tee off at 9:00 a.m. The team
consisting of Jud Menuez, Ryan Schlabach, Sam Troyer and Mitch Levengood came in at first place with a score of 57.
The event brought in over $5,000.00 for the Aimee Frenette-Rickly Memorial Scholarship fund, held and managed by
the Holmes County Education Foundation. Several individuals and businesses contributed to the cause with hole sponsorships, door and raffle prizes. Organizers of the event thanked the Mansfield Coca-Cola Company, as well as P&G IGA
in Killbuck for their continued contributions toward this annual event. The fund has grown to $60,417 and has provided $10,000 in scholarships to twenty
West Holmes graduates since it was created in 2000. A special thanks goes out to the Frenette family for their efforts to make this event a success every
year!
Weber Girls Poker Run. The 4th Poker Run in memory of Doris Weber and Chris Weber was held on Saturday, July 30. Two
hundred and sixteen bikers (and a few car-drivers!) were involved in this annual event, which began at the Holmesville American
Legion at 11:00 a.m. From there, the surprise Poker Run went to Howard, the Danville, the Loudonville, and then back to
Holmesville. The evening topped off with dinner and a concert from the band Bad Stone. All proceeds, which totalled $6,000,
went into the Foundation’s Weber Girls Scholarship fund, which was created in 2010. When the pledge amount is met, the
Weber Girls Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of West Holmes High School or Waynedale High School who
is pursuing higher education and is a child or grandchild of a veteran.
Home for the Holidays. The Cary House was transformed into a winter wonderland by thirteen vendors from the community
for the “Home for the Holidays” fundraising event, sponsored by Every Woman’s House. Approximately 200 people walked
through the home of the Foundation, taking in sights such as a circulating Christmas tree, table settings with fresh roses, antiques
from Christmas past, and more snowmen to count! The event raised $5,555 for Every Woman’s House.
