Course Notes: DsnS 102 is the required beginning design studio that is part of the multidisciplinary
Core Design Program at Iowa State. All students entering the College of Design are required to take
this studio. The project assignments and syllabi were developed by my colleagues prior to my involvment in the course. I am currently teaching my fifth and sixth studio sections. In addition, I assist in
administering the course and have given some of the large group (300+students) lectures that accompany the course.

Critical Postcard of Iowa: Create a critical postcard of Iowa, using collage and montage techniques
and basic design principles. Students study an assigned Iowa postcard and a Heartfield photomontage as precedents. Their final postcard must be crafted using hand cut-and-paste techniques. They
must incorporate one element from their assigned postcard, one from the Heartfield montage, and
one outside object of their choice, and they must add text.

The Pattern Project: Students are assigned a hand tool. They write an inventive essay exploring the
tool in language. They translate the hand tool into a two-dimensional pattern drawing and “test” the
pattern by making a paper tool from the pattern pieces. They then use the pattern pieces to create a
three-dimensional construction, a “space container.” They analyze this through a series of sectional
drawings.

The Doorway Project: In teams, students design and build a full-scale threshold construction using 1x2 pieces of wood. The project considers ideas of threshold, movement between spaces, the
body, and material investigation. Doorways must be collapsible and be able to install and uninstall in
the site in less than five minutes. As an individuals, students then create a hybrid drawing (“mo-drallage”) to express the way the body moves through the passage.
