As we wish Rev. Fred Marano, ’82, former Rector-Principal, all the best and thank him for his fourteen years of service to Cathedral
Prep, we welcome Rev. Joseph G. Fonti, S.T.L., ’84, as Rector-President, and Rev. James Rodriguez (Class of 2003, Cathedral
Seminary Residence) as a faculty member. Both Fr. Fonti and Fr. Rodriguez began their new positions July 1. In the role of Principal, Fr.
Fonti has appointed Mr. Richie Diaz, ’96. Mr. John O’Brien, ’01, has been appointed Assistant Principal of Academics for the Upper
House; Rev. James Kuroly, ’98, has been appointed Assistant Principal of Academics for the Lower House; and Mr. Joseph Russo,
’79, has been appointed Assistant Principal of Student Life.

MEET FR. FONTI, FR. RODRIGUEZ, MR. DIAZ
Born in Brooklyn, NY. Father Joseph Fonti, ’84, S.T.L., was ordained a priest on June 27, 1992. In 1998, he earned a theological
license (S.T.L.) in Spiritual Theology from the Teresianum in Rome. From 1992-2008 Father Fonti served primarily in Brooklyn as a
parochial-vicar, a high school chaplain, and as a pastor. He also served the Diocese from 2008-2012 as the Vicar for Pastoral Support,
the Director of the Office of Priestly Life and Ministry Spiritual Director of Cathedral Seminary Residence and the Director of The SS
Peter & Paul Spirituality Center. In 2012, he was appointed Associate Director of the Sacred Heart Institute – established as a center for
the on-going formation of the clergy, priests and deacons, serving in the Archdiocese of New York and the Dioceses of Brooklyn and
Rockville Centre. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio appointed Father Fonti in June 2013 the Rector-President of Cathedral Prep Seminary.
Assuming the responsibilities of the Rector-President he will continue to minister to the priests of Brooklyn as the Director of the Office
of Priestly Life and Ministry.
Rev. James Rodriguez, ordained in 2008, served his first assignment as a parochial vicar at Most Precious Blood (Long Island City)
before his assignment at Cathedral Prep. Prior to Cathedral Prep he also served as a chaplain for St. John’s Prep. While at Cathedral Prep
teaching Theology he will be assigned as Associate Vocations Director for the Diocese working with our current Vocation Director, Fr.
Kevin Abels, ’94.
Born in Queens, N.Y. Mr. Richie Diaz, ’96, MA, MS Ed, began his studies at Hofstra University, earning a BA in English Literature
and Secondary Education in 2000. Mr. Diaz went on to earn an MA degree in English Education from Queens College and an MS Ed
degree in School Building Leadership from St. John’s University. He began his education work at Herricks Middle and High schools. In
2001, he began his teaching career at Cathedral Prep as an English teacher; during the subsequent years he held the positions of English
Department Coordinator, Assistant Dean, and he has served as the Vice Principal for the last two years. He has also continued to teach
college courses through St. John’s University’s College Advantage Program. In addition, he has worked in youth ministry for many
years in various endeavors, including serving as a Youth Minister. In June 2013, Fr. Fonti appointed Mr. Diaz Principal of Cathedral Prep
Seminary; he looks forward to challenging our students to achieve their highest potentials.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR-PRESIDENT
July 2013
Dear Brother Alums:
I am happy to write to you at this time as the new Rector-President of Cathedral Prep.
As a proud alumnus (Brooklyn ’84), I know firsthand the invaluable gift Cathedral gives its students: a superior education in an
environment where each man is known, loved, respected and challenged to grow in wisdom, maturity and faith.
While remaining faithful to this mission and purpose, Cathedral will, in the coming year, undergo a structural-change. At the direction
of Bishop DiMarzio a Task Force reviewed the present governance structure of the school. As Boards of Governors and Trustees will be
established to oversee the overall care of Cathedral, the daily operation will be the responsibility of both the Rector-President and the
Principal.
The seminary component, which will be under the direction and care of the Rector, will continue to provide an environment where a
young man can discern a possible vocation to the diocesan priesthood. As the new structure will be open to all Catholic boys who are
serious about their faith and learning, it will not be a requirement of every boy to participate in the seminary program. Nonetheless every
student will be required to attend daily Mass and partake in spiritual exercises (ex: holy hours, spiritual counseling) offered at Cathedral.
In this time of transition it is important to remember and highlight that keeping the “Cathedral Spirit” alive and vibrant is not just the
responsibility of the present faculty/staff, this new Rector and our great students but of all of us who are privileged to call Cathedral our
Alma Mater.
My four years at Cathedral greatly shaped me both as a man and as a priest. With gratitude for those influential years I eagerly and
joyfully assume the duties of Rector hoping that in the next 5 years I can share with those who presently study at Cathedral the gift I
received: a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for faith.
May your own reflection of formation and friends at Cathedral motivate you to also give, prayerfully and financially, so that
together we can keep our Alma Mater, Cathedral, a place where men are formed for greatness.

15th Annual Alumni Reunion
Immaculata Dinner
On Friday, May 10, 2013, Cathedral Preparatory Seminary held its 15th Annual Immaculata Awards Ceremony and Alumni
Reunion at the Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston, New York. About 200 alumni and friends were gathered to congratulate the
Golden Anniversary of the Class of 1963, the Silver Anniversary of the Class of 1988 as well as this year’s Immaculata Award recipients:
Bishop Raymond Chappetto, ’65, Bishop Paul Sanchez, ’66, and John Casey, ’57.
The evening began with an elegant cocktail reception, and continued in the Chapel, where Vespers were celebrated, presided by Bishop
Raymond Chappetto and assisted by Fr. Fred Marano, ’82, Rector-Principal, Fr. Bill Sweeney, ’73, Alumni Association President,
and Fr. Jim Kuroly, ’98, Spiritual Director.
The evening continued with a delicious dinner and all gathered had a wonderful time getting reacquainted with old friends and meeting
new ones.
During the dinner the Class of 1963 was well represented, gathered by a tremendous effort led by classmate Dr. Tom Maloney,’63. The
Class of 1988 was also well represented led by Rev. Kevin Sweeney, ’88. In addition, the Class of 1973 was well represented celebrating
their 40th Anniversary.
Congratulations to Bishop Chappetto, Bishop Sanchez, John Casey, the Class of 1963, the Class of 1988, and all anniversary classes! We

Alumni Affairs
Dear Alumni and Friends of Cathedral,
While this past year has been one filled with many challenges and changes, Cathedral Prep is strong and preparing for her next 100 years.
Superstorm Sandy brought many of these challenges to our alumni, faculty, and the families of our current students. In true Cathedral
Prep Community spirit, our alumni and friends responded generously to those in need. Thank you.
We welcome back to Cathedral our new Rector-President, Fr. Joseph Fonti ’84, and welcome Assistant Spiritual Director and faculty
member, Fr. James Rodriguez. Also, congratulations to Richie Diaz, ’96, on his promotion to Principal, and to Fr. Jim Kuroly, ’98,
John O’Brien, ’01, and Joe Russo, ’79, on being named Assistant Principals. We offer our sincere thoughts and prayers as they begin
their roles guiding our students and leading Cathedral. Additionally we thank and wish our former Rector-Principal, Fr. Fred Marano,
’82, the best in his new assignment. Finally, we welcome our Freshman Class and transfer students to the Cathedral family.
As our school prepares to celebrate its 100th Anniversary and looks forward to the future, we need to continue to tell the story of
Cathedral Prep - a school that remains an excellent choice for young men to develop themselves “in wisdom, maturity and faith.”

Congratulations to Ms. Diana Raschella, Faculty, who was installed as a member of Epsilon Kappa, the Spanish Honor Society, of St.
John’s University (NY). Ms. Raschella is also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish
and Portuguese (www.aatsp.org) NYC Chapter.
Over the course of this academic school year, Mr. Wierzbicki’s (Brett Wierzbicki, ’03, Faculty) Sophomore Honors English class read
Cory Doctorow’s novel Little Brother. We are proud to announce, that the projects they composed during their study of the novel were
so exceptional that they have been published by the author himself on his website at http://craphound.com/?p=4821. Congratulations
and thank you to Mr. Wierzbicki and his Sophomore Honors students for all of their hard work and success this school year. Join us in
being proud of their efforts!
ADOPT-a-CLASSROOM
Classrooms are open to adoption through Adoptaclassorom.org, a non-for-profit that directs 100% of all donations earmarked
for classrooms to the classroom teacher in the form of online credit (and Adopt-A-Classroom takes $0 for administration
costs). The teacher takes the credit and shops online from a network of affiliated vendors to cover classroom needs. Adopta-Classroom will work with the teacher on a one-to-one basis if vendors are unable to meet classroom needs. In return,
our benefactor receives an “Impact Report” from Adopt-A-Classroom which details the classroom project’s progress. This
program allows for 100% transperancy and accountability as well as allowing communication to take place between the
students and teacher and the teacher to his or her benefactors. Truly, all are involved in our students’ education and formation.

• Mr. Wierzbicki’s (Brett Wierzbicki, ’03) classroom will be focusing on a multi-cultural, cross-currilcular project in which students will study English literature (by way of Iranian Marjorie Satrapi’s Persepolis, a graphic novel about growing up in revolutionary
Iran)
• Mr. Will Scharen’s math class will be computing their logarithms on newly purchased graphing calculators
• Mr. Diaz’s (Richie Diaz, ’96, Principal) English AP class will be involved in expanding our laptop learning initiative on new Lenovo
x131e “ThinkPads”.

CATHEDRAL’S AIR & SPACE ASSOCIATION

As Cathedral Prep is a hidden gem in our Diocese, the Cathedral Prep Air & Space Association is a hidden gem in our school. This
club was born after the end of the Space Science senior elective that some of you took with me. Even though the course was no longer
being offered, there still was an interest in the space program among some students. Thus was born our club, which has 10 members
and has concluded its second year. Originally it was called the Space Enthusiasts’ Club, but that was only a temporary name. I wanted
this club to be driven by ideas from the members. So the name change occured early in our first year of existence. A very exciting thing
happened this year. After noticing that every mission has its own designed cloth patch, our seniors suggested that our club design its
own patch. Ryan Quinn, ’13, and Jacob Lynch, ’13, two members of the Class of 2013, went to work on the idea, with Lynch using
his artisitic skills to put the ideas to paper. When it was completed, I contacted someone who makes the patches for NASA, and within
a few months, a box of our mission patches arrived in Elmhurst! When a member joins the club, he purchases a patch and is allowed to
wear it on his school sweater. Next time you visit Cathedral, I will proudly show you one.
So, what do we do? Each year, I take a group of students to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, where there are many aircraft
built by Grumman and an unused Lunar Module from the Apollo program. We meet to discuss issues going on in NASA, like the exploration
of Mars, the International Space Station and the Orion program. We also look at sites on the internet or DVDs that look at NASA’s past
successes. At our last meeting, we explored Skylab, our country’s first space station, as the program celebrates its 40th anniversary. Even
though New York is not known for supporting the space program, at Cathedral Prep, the space program is truly appreciated.

FORENSICS – COACH RUSSO’S 20th ANNIVERSARY &
END OF SEASON RECAP by Joe Russo, ’79, Coach
As I complete my 20th year as Forensics Coach, I can
honestly say that each year is full of surprises and blessings
and the 2012-2013 Season was no different! Despite
schedule changes and even when the coach drove to the
wrong school, we had an outstanding season. Our Student
Congress delagation won the Msgr. Sean Ogle Award
for the Best Team (named after Msgr. Sean Ogle, ’68,
a member of our Hall of Fame, former Faculty, Spiritual
Director, Forensics Coach, and one of the founders of
the Brooklyn-Queens Catholic Forensics League) in
the Brooklyn-Queens Catholic Forensics League by 50
points! We qualified six students for the New York State
Forensics League Championships and eight for the National
Catholic Forensics League Championships in Philadelphia.
Sophomore Brian McCormack became a member of the
National Forensics League (NFL), and the NFL awarded
senior Thomas Colon, ’13, a degree of Superior Distinction
& senior Jacob Lynch, ’13, a degree of Outstanding Distinction.
2012-2013 Forensics Team with Coach Joe Russo, ‘79
In April, the NYS Forensics League Championships were held at Chaminade High School on Long Island. Representing Cathedral
were Jacob Lynch, Ian Colon, Connor Mullan in Student Congress and, Alejandro Sanchez, Tyler Flannery and Nicholas Telesco
in Extemporaneous Speaking. Senator Lynch made it to the semi-final round! Over the Memorial Day weekend, Cathedral Prep was
represented by Joshua Tolentino (Drama), Brian McCormack (Declamation), Alejandro Sanchez, William Tarrant, Nicholas Telesco,
Tyler Flannery (all in Extemporaneous Speaking) and Connor Mullan and Ian Colon (Student Congress). Sophomore McCormack made
it to the octo-final round in declamation, one of the few students in our league to advance.
At Cathedral Prep’s Annual Interscholastic Awards Dinner, we celebrated the year by handing out the team awards. Junior Ian Colon was
the Varsity M.V.P., and senior Jacob Lynch was given the Team Spirit Award. Sophomore Tyler Flannery was the Junior Varsity M.V.P.
and freshman Nicholas Telesco took home the Most Improved Speaker award.
As always, our Alumni judges are an integral part of our team and we can’t thank them enough for their generosity. Special thanks go
to Ricardo Jean-Pierre, ’09, Andrew Gully, ’09, Conrad Nytko, ’10, and Brian Chambers, ’04, who judged for us at states and
nationals. Also congratulations to our seniors Tom Colon, Jacob Lynch, Kevin Sue-a-Quan, ’13, and Justin Ruiz, ’13 - you are always
part of our team (hopefully as judges!).
In Philadelphia, one member of our team remarked to me that there is a sadness to the end of the speech season and that is true. Coupled
with that, I would add, is the anticipation of the next season. We are already preparing!
CATHEDRAL PREP’s SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

The athletic program once again had a year of which we can all be very proud. All of our student-athletes and our coaching staff were
extremely dedicated and worked exceptionaly hard as they represented Cathedral Prep in interscholastic competition. As noted in a previous article, the soccer, cross country, and bowling teams had successul seasons this past fall.
SOCCER: The soccer season was highlighted by freshman Danny Goncalves leading the team in goals (6) and senior goalie John
Postel, ’13, who had over 150 saves in 10 games. After a very challenging season and wealth of freshmen talent to replace the seniors
of 2012, we said goodbye to class of 2013 seniors Mike Billera (C), ’13, Emilio Cura, ’13, David Pintor, ’13, Ryan Quinn, ’13,
and John Postel (C), ’13. We look forward to a more successful season as we approach a conference re-alignment. With St Agnes
and Blessed Sacrament now closed, the Catholic High School Athletic Association (NYC, Yonkers, and Westchester) (CHSAA) has
changed yet again. We will be in a more competitive conference and look to bring the Crusaders home their first league championship
in almost 20 years. Our home games will be between Juniper Valley Park and Flushing Meadow Park. Next year’s team will certainly be
exciting to watch. Come show your support.

TRACK: The cross country team earned over three dozen medals and was led by
junior captain Liam Gallagher, who looks to earn a place in the New York State competition next year. The cross country program has a bright future as there are a number
of underclassmen on the team, including freshman David Gaskey, who earned a first
place finish this year, along with many other medals.
BOWLING: The bowling season was highlighted by the JV team’s second place finish
in the “A” Division and 4th place finish in the City Championships. The all sophomore
team looks forward to competing on the varsity level as they begin their junior year in
the fall.
BASKETBALL: The basketball season was highlighted by the JV team’s appearance
in the championship game. Though the team lost, they had an excellent season, with a
6-2 record in the regular season and two playoff wins. The varsity team looks forward
to an improved season next year under the leadership of next year’s seniors Timothy
McQuail, Orian Del Fierro, and Liam Gallagher.
BASEBALL: The varsity baseball team had another strong season as they went 8-4 in
the regular season. The team was led by senior pitcher Anthony LaPorta, ’13, who had
a number of dominating starts, and sophomore Daniel DeBiase, who supplied timely
offensive production and was a defensive anchor on the left side of the infield. We were fortunate to bring back the JV baseball team
this year. Though the team struggled through the season, sophomore pitcher Richard Rodriguez recorded over seventy strike outs in six
starts, and in the semi-finals, Richard threw a one-hitter in a tough 1-0 loss.

Bannan Scholar-Athlete Award (named after Cathedral Prep Hall of Famer, honored alumnus, and former CYO director Msgr. Martin
Bannan, ’50), Sagar Yadav ’13 was the recipient of the Brian Payne Sportsman of the Year Award (named after winning basketball
coach, Cathedral Prep Hall of Famer, and former faculty member Brian Payne), and John Postel ’13 was the recipient of the Jim Dilg
Athlete of the Year Award (named after Jim Dilg, former Faculty and Athletic Director, Cathedral Prep Hall of Famer, and treasurer
of the CHSAA). These three seniors are truly deserving of these awards as they are all fine students, fine athletes, and most importantly,
they are fine young men whom each of us can be proud to count as brother alumni.
As our athletic season and academic year draws to a close, I would like to, on behalf of all of our student-athletes and the entire coaching
staff, thank our leader and our number one fan, Fr. Marano. During his time as our Rector-Principal, Fr. Marano was a consistent presence on the field, bench, and sidelines. His support, his example of humility and grace, and, of course, his supply of Gatorade, will be
sorely missed. As Fr. Marano moves on to another assignment, we thank him for his service to Cathedral Prep and wish him well. Please

On February 2, 2013, we recognized six men
who brought positive recognition to Cathedral
Prep and themselves while they were at Cathedral
and in the years after their graduations. They
were selected by the Hall of Committee. It is not
an easy task, but it is a happy one. We continue
to welcome your nominations for future years.

words of Henry Ford when he said, “Coming
together is a beginning; keeping together is
progress; working together is success.”
For a small school like Cathedral Prep to be
successful, it is necessary to get every ounce
of talent out of the athletes who arrive at
Elmhurst. A coach’s job is made easier when
he has individuals like tonight’s group who
lead by hustle, determination, and example. We
know: if you have tried to do something and
failed, you are vastly better off than if you tried
to do nothing and succeeded. Cathedral Prep has always prided itself on the spirit of its athletes and student body. These men truly
embody this sentiment. Congratulations to these sons of Cathedral Prep.
Msgr. Martin Geraghty, ’59, entered the Hall of Fame for his merits on the basketball court as a member of the Varsity Basketball Team
from 1957-1959. After many years of service for the Diocese, he currently serves the parish of St. Robert Bellarmine.
Charles Kutch, ’79, competed on the Varsity Track Team under the tutelage of Deacon Sal Marino (also a Hall of Fame inductee).
Today, he is a Corporate Vice-President at New York Life Insurance where he has been employed for over twenty-five years and he
volunteers his time as the Sports Coordinator and coach for St. Joseph’s School and as a Youth Counselor for the St. Regis Columbian
Squires.
Steven Tuifel, ’86, was known for his athletic prowess on the basketball court for Cathedral’s Varsity Team winning the MVP award in
1984, 1985, and 1986 and was selected for the CHSAA All-Division Team. Today he is a devoted father, works as a Field Technician
for Verizon, and is a proud member of the Knights of Columbus.
Rev. Kevin Sweeney, ’88, who just recently celebrated his 25th Anniversary with his class at this year’s Immaculata, was a valuable
member of the Cathedral Prep Varsity Baseball Team. Today he serves as pastor of St. Michael’s (Sunset Park).
Msgr. Kieran Harrington, VE, ’89, was an awarded member of the Varsity Forensics Team under Hall of Fame Coach Msgr. Sean
Ogle, ’68. Today he serves the Diocese as Vicar of Communications and is President and Chairman of the De Sales Media Group and
as an administrator for St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral.
Deacon Salvatore Marino (Coach/Faculty), coached Cathedral’s Track Team throughout his time at Cathedral from 1973 to 2000. His
highlight was coaching the 1979 Cross-Country Varsity Track Team to the BQ CHSAA Championships. Today he still teaches at Valley
Stream South High School as Chair of their Mathematics Department.

SAINT MATTHEW SOCIETY MASS AND NETWORKING NIGHT

The St. Matthew’s Society’s mission is to encourage people to come together and share their talents whether personal, business or financials with
our alumni, non-alumni, and especially the school. Our second objective
is to raise funds from corporations or individuals for tuition assistance for
current students at Cathedral Prep or those who desire to attend but cannot
afford to do so.
On April 11, 2013, we once again held our annual St. Matthew’s Society
Dinner. This year we had over eighty people mostly consisting of nonalumni representing different corporations. The companies present (names
are listed on the Alumni website) were there to share business opportunities with each other, offer services to the individuals present and make a
financial donation to the tuition fund.
Once again everyone expressed that they enjoyed a night of spirituality,
networking opportunities and a phenomenal culinary event. We started the evening with a mass concelebrated by Fr. Fred Marano, ’82,
former Rector-Principal, and Fr. Bill Sweeney, ’73, Alumni Association President. Mass was followed by a cocktail hour, and then,
once again, a home-made gourmet dinner prepared by several alumni and over 15 current Cathedral Prep students led by the master chef,
Billy Carauna, ’72, Ana Reagan from EFT Network, Inc., Tom Gotimer, ’73, and myself. Two alumni, Brendon Harfmann, ’12,
who currently resides at the Cathedral Seminary House of Formation (Douglaston), and John Vollmerhausen, ’12, both spoke about
their experiences at Cathedral Prep. Both Brendon and John touched our hearts with their passion about how their time at Cathedral
helped form them and how others’ generosity allowed them to graduate from Cathedral Prep and move on to the next step. Fr. Marano
also spoke about all the good things that are happening at Cathedral Prep.
I encouraged all in attendance to network with each other and take advantage of what each had to offer. I also explained the importance of our
other mission to help raise funds and asked those there to help in any way
they could. We were very fortunate that Card Processing was there with
a handheld credit card terminal to process donations. I thank them for all
their help and also want to thank EFT Network for their financial donation
and for all the food they bought and prepared.
Through St. Matthew’s spirit and intersession, I believe we are giving our
Alumni a place to turn in times of their needs. It has also given alumni,
non-alumni and corporations an opportunity to share their business with
our Cathedral family. But mostly, it has expanded our family to include all
those attending that were never part of Cathedral.
We raised over $15,000, but we need to do more. Therefore, I encourage
everyone reading this article to become part of our family by helping in any
way you can. One way of helping is by donating what ever you can to the tuition assistance program. We are also looking for volunteers
to be put on a list of whom we can call to donate funds when a student is having problems meeting their payments at some point of the
year. If you are interested in any of these suggestions, please contact the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, at alumni@

Each year, the family of the late Thomas Moran, ’75, gathers at Cathedral Preparatory Seminary to celebrate the life and legacy of Tom.
As a proud alumnus of Cathedral Prep, Tom often would regale his wife, Sue, and his children with stories of his days as a student. After
his death, Sue and her family have kept the annual tradition of awarding a young man entering his senior year with a partial scholarship so
that Tom’s love of his time at Cathedral Prep and the important life lessons learned at the Prep could continue with a new generation. The
rising senior honored by the Moran family has to be a man of service to the Cathedral community as well as the greater area. This year,
the Moran family granted the award to William Tarant. Many thanks to the Moran family for their endless support of Cathedral Prep.
Tom is remembered in prayer here at Cathedral and his love for Cathedral continues to live on in the lives of the young men like William.

On May 31, 2013, forty-two seniors graduated from Cathedral Preparatory Seminary at a ceremony presided by Bishop Raymond
Chappetto, ’65, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James (Brooklyn). The commencement speaker was Rev. Fred Marano, ’82, former
Rector-Principal, addressing the graduating seniors as he “graduates” with them. Fr. Marano, at his last Cathedral Prep graduation as
Rector-Principal, wished the Seniors well daring them to keep to the standards of the Church and Cathedral Prep, and reminding them
