May 31, 2015 The most holy trinity Trinity Sunday Trinity Sunday falls one week after Pentecost Sunday, and it is the day that the Catholic Church has set aside to honor the most fundamental of Christian beliefs, the Holy Trinity. Every Eucharistic Celebration begins, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (one biblical source of this invocation is found in today’s second reading) and concludes with the blessing given in the name of the Trinity. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org WHAT’S INSIDE: Around the Parish Page 2 New Parishioners Page 3 Teen Confirmation News Page 4 Front Desk Help Needed Page 5 CRHP Fall Retreats Page 7 Around the Archdiocese Page 9 Hispanic Pages Pages 10-11 The Mass itself, a memorial of the Cross and Easter, draws us into the Trinity and reveals the self-giving Love of the three Divine Persons who are One. We can never fully understand the mystery of the Trinity, but we do know that God is three persons in one Nature (Father, Son and Holy Spirit); the three persons are all equally God; and They cannot be divided. 20th Anniversary Eucharistic Congress Each year the Eucharistic Congress brings together Catholics from across the Archdiocese and the country to celebrate the visible, living presence of Jesus. Archbishop Gregory, along with Bishop Talley and Bishop Zarama, ask that you join them for this year’s 20TH Anniversary Eucharistic Congress at the Georgia International Convention Center, June 5th and 6th. The theme of the 2015 Eucharistic Congress comes from the Gospel of Matthew 28:20 “I will be with you always”. Take this opportunity to reconnect with friends, spend quiet time in prayer and listen to powerful testimonials from Fr. Robert Barron, Alan Ames, Teresa Tomeo, and Lino Rulli. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available in several languages at the 2015 Eucharistic Congress on Friday, June 5, from 7:30-9:30 pm and Saturday, June 6, from 12-4 pm. However, the lines and wait-time may be long. Please take advantage of your parish reconciliation times to avoid the long lines and use the extra time to enjoy the Eucharistic Congress. CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING Prayers To submit a non-published prayer request for our parish Prayer Chain, email [email protected] or call the Church office, 404-233-2145. † We ask that you pause a moment to offer a prayer for the sick of our community, especially: Mary Braniff, Jeannie Stier Butler, Efren Carmona, Evangeline Catot, Christine Dailey, Lynne Hamrick, Cheri Letts, Leah Jones, Iscela Macias, Bill Mann, Eula Marshall, Marie Pearce, Elizabeth Pennington, Isaac Saleumsy, Ronald and Helen Speights, Patty Steadman, Tom Rochefort. † Congratulations and prayers for those who were married April 18: Carolyn Elizabeth McDonald & Aaron Jeffery Glover. † Congratulations, welcome and prayers for our new members through baptism: Alexander Cameron Elbe, Henry Craig Schlottmann, Willa Marie Godbee, Savannah Leigh Styles, Charlotte Marie Franklin, Nicholas Joseph Notarianni, Victoria Ryan Baile, Annabelle Jude Baile. Short Sermons to Live By The greatest barrier to evangelization today is bad example. Our strategy of evangelization must be based upon sanctity, upon our enthusiastic response to Christ’s universal call to holiness. Cardinal John P. Foley 2 WWW.CATHEDRALOFCHRISTTHEKING.ORG Around the Parish Ushers Needed We are currently recruiting men and women to fill the vital role of ushers at all of our weekend Masses. Among other things our ushers greet people, help with seating, receive offertory and assist in the communion procession. Ushers are the “first faces” that greet the Faithful, and are important in creating a warm, welcoming and worshipful atmosphere. Qualifications? We are looking for friendly, motivated people, high school age on up, to serve in this role. Want more info? Talk to an usher after Mass or email our Head Usher, Sid Turner, at [email protected]. Father Morrow Celebrates 60 Years of Priesthood Please join in the celebration as Father Morrow celebrates sixty years of priestly ordination on Sunday, May 31 at the noon Mass here at the Cathedral. The Mass will be followed by a reception in Kenny Hall. All are invited! Sponsors Needed for RCIA/Rite of Reception Parishioners are needed to sponsor adults inquiring into the faith and preparing to come into full communion with the Church. A sponsor is not required to have a degree in theology but rather a listening, active and open heart. Time and again past sponsors have experienced the privilege of being part of someone’s spiritual journey into the Church. When: Sundays, June 7 – August 16, 10-11:45 am, Hyland Center Assembly Room. Sacraments will be celebrated on Sunday, August 23 at the 7:15 pm Mass. For additional information, contact [email protected]. Your envelope will be placed on the altar during Mass for the nine days of the novena. There is also a special envelope in your offertory envelope packet for June. Mr. Kyle Melton Stewardship of Treasure How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116 In the reading from Deuteronomy, Moses proclaims the greatness of God and there is no other. The Trinity theme—three persons in one God—links today’s Second Reading and the Gospel. According to St. Paul, it is by the Spirit that we enjoy new life and become adopted children and heirs through Christ. In St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus commissions the Apostles to go out ad make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We, as faithful stewards, acknowledge our baptismal call to discipleship in the Lord. Inspired by the Holy Trinity, we act out this discipleship through our sharing of time, talent, and treasure to build up our parish communion—to build up the kingdom of God. Due to Memorial Day holiday publishing dates, offertory information was not available at the time of printing. For your convenience, electronic giving is available at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org. It’s not that bad.” Maybe people have said it to you. Or perhaps you keep saying it to yourself. But it hasn’t helped. You’re still hurting. Things are coming apart. Here’s the good news: You don’t have to go through your struggle alone. Help is available. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who will walk with you, listen to you, and provide confidential, one-to-one care as you sift through the pieces and find what is truly in your heart. Christ Renews His Parish RETREAT Women’s Weekend Men’s Weekend August 22-23, 2015 August 29-30, 2015 At the Cathedral of Christ the King REGISTER ONLINE TODAY! www.cathedralofchristtheking.org/CRHP YOUR CATHEDRAL PARISH FAMILY, YOUR LEGACY In our earliest years, visionary parishioners utilized planned giving as a way to fulfill their hopes and dreams for the Cathedral. For example, one of our founding parishioners established a charitable trust in her will, naming the Cathedral as beneficiary. The gift was small at first but has grown significantly over the decades continuing to bless the Cathedral day after day. We invite you to consider a planned gift to our Cathedral Fund as your long term legacy. Your gift will help support special projects and ministry needs beyond our annual operating expenses. A simple provision in your will or a designation from a retirement plan can create your future gift. You can designate a particular project or ministry, or your funds can be used for the general needs of the Cathedral. We are ready to work with you and your advisors to develop a gift plan that best suits your goals and objectives. For a private discussion of planned giving opportunities, please contact The Cathedral Fund Advisory Board member Ham Smith, 404-2616189, [email protected] or Sharon Connelly, 404-267-3680, [email protected]. Is God calling you to take a break to have this renewal experience with Him? Do you desire to grow closer to God? Are you searching for a deeper sense of purpose? “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you…” James 4:8 For more info, contact Mike Desing, [email protected] or Amanda Carroll, [email protected] 7 CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING What is an Active Parishioner? Our parishioners are often asking us to verify that they are an “active practicing Catholic.” The question of parishioner status is important because this question comes up in many circumstances such as Certification as godparents/ sponsors for Baptisms and Confirmation Active parishioner tuition rates in Catholic schools Marriage/Baptism preparation Scheduling of the facilities for services such as Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals Enrolling children in our programs In practice, Parishioner verification is done by looking equally at three criteria: Registration, Regular Mass Attendance, and Financial and Time Support. If you have any questions regarding the parishioner verification process, contact [email protected]. Msgr. Frank McNamee encourages you to be an active member of our parish. Your parish – and your own faith life – is enriched and strengthened by the participation of our members! 8 WWW.CATHEDRALOFCHRISTTHEKING.ORG Stewardship Bernadette Flowers • 404-267-3690 • Your time & talent @cathedralctk THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 31, 2015 Around the Archdiocese Dating Workshop Atlanta Summer Organ Festival Continues Holy Spirit’s Marriage and Family Ministry is offering How to Avoid Falling For a Jerk (or Jerkette) at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4465 Northside Drive, on Sunday, June 7 and Sunday, June 14 from 1 to 5 pm.
