TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Christ the King School Peggy Warner, Principal • 404-233-0383 • www.christking.org As of August 12, 2011, more than $22M in education tax credits have already been approved by the State of Georgia Department of Revenue…so the $50M cap will certainly be met this year. Get your TP1 form in ASAP if you want to take advantage of this cost-free way to support Catholic education! Georgia Private School Tax Credit – GRACE Scholars, Inc. In 2008, the state of Georgia passed legislation that established the Georgia Private School Tax Credit. This law allows Georgia taxpayers to divert a portion of their state tax obligation to a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) of their choosing to be used as financial aid at a Georgia private school. Soon after this piece of legislation was passed, the Archdiocese of Atlanta partnered with the Archdiocese of Savannah to form GRACE Scholars, Inc., the Catholic SSO allowed under this law. Since Christ the King School started participating in the GRACE Scholars program, the school has received $264,000 in funds to be used for scholarships for worthy students with need. In total, the amount raised currently funds 10 students at CKS, with more added each year. If you owe Georgia State taxes and would like to divert a portion of those taxes to Christ the King School, or any other Catholic school in Georgia, please consider participating in the Georgia Private School Tax Credit program. How to Contribute: There is a two-step process in order to participate, so the sooner that one starts the process the better chance they will have to take advantage of this extraordinary tax opportunity. All donors need to first fill out an approval form that must be mailed to the State of Georgia to ensure that the state’s cap of $50 million for the program is not exceeded. Once approved, donors will receive written notice from the state that they can contribute directly to the SOO of their choice. Donors then need to fill out a GRACE Scholars Designation Form and mail that, along with their check, to GRACE Scholars, Inc. All checks must be received by GRACE Scholars before December 31, 2011 in order to count for this tax year. Both forms can be downloaded by going to www.gracescholars.org/share/twosteps. Before working at the BCM food pantry, she had never reached out to the community like this. Jane says her involvement was accidental: A friend from her exercise class invited her to come for a tour and promised her that “she’d like it.” Jane went on the tour and saw the people who needed assistance and the work going on in the food pantry, and it all just clicked. “I realized that the food coming in from the church’s food drive was going out to the people I met in the lobby.” She later went to a volunteer dinner that had as it keynote speakers, recipients of the food she had packed. When they talked about how their families would have gone hungry without the food she and other volunteers packed, she was hooked. Do you know of someone who might be a great fit for a particular ministry? Encourage them to attend our Festival of Ministries on September 24 and 25 or look online at cathedralofchristtheking.org/ volunteersignup. 8 WWW.CATHEDRALOFCHRISTTHEKING.ORG Stewardship Bernadette Flowers • 404-267-3690 • Your time & talent www.ctkfestivalofministries.wordpress.com @ctkfom Festival of Ministries Stay up to date on the ministry happenings. TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 4, 2011 Celebrating the Lord’s Day On Sunday, we gather as the Body of Christ to celebrate the Lord’s Day, the day of Christ’s Resurrection. As “the first day of the week” (Mk 16:2), it symbolizes the new creation ushered in by the Resurrection of Christ. Thus, it has become for Christians the first of all days and of all feasts (Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 452). This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad (Ps 118:24). Each Sunday is a “little Easter”—a celebration of the central mysteries of our faith. essential to the spiritual life, can never replace the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy and the reception of Holy Communion. Keeping Sunday-All Day Celebrating the Sunday Eucharist—though central and essential—does not complete our observance of Sunday. In addition to attending Mass each Sunday, we should also refrain “from those activities which impede the worship of God and disturb the joy proper to the day of the Lord or the The Sunday Eucharist necessary relaxation of mind and body” (Compendium of the The primary way in which we celebrate the Lord’s Day is with Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 453). Sunday has our participation in the Sunday Eucharist. What better way to traditionally been a day of rest. However, the concept of a day celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord than by celebration of of rest may seem odd in a world that runs 24/7, where we are the memorial of his Passion, death, and Resurrection? This tethered to our jobs by a variety of electronic gadgets, where celebration is not a solitary, private event. Instead, we come businesses run as normal no matter what the day of the week, together as the People of God, the Church, to worship with and where silence seems to be an endangered species. By one heart and one voice. taking a day each week to rest in the Lord, we provide a living example to the culture that all time belongs to God and that The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches that people are more important than things. As Pope John Paul II “participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday said in Dies Domini (The Day of the Lord), his apostolic letter Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to on Sunday: Through Sunday rest, daily concerns and tasks Christ and to his Church” (CCC, no. 2182). When members can find their proper perspective: the material things about of our church community are absent from this gathering, they which we worry give way to spiritual values; in a moment of are missed. No member of the faithful should be absent from encounter and less pressured exchange, we see the true face of the Sunday Eucharist without a serious reason. The Liturgy the people with whom we live. should be the first thing on Sunday’s schedule, not the last. We should arrive on time, prepared in mind and heart to fully Not everyone has the freedom to take Sundays away from participate in the Mass. Those who cannot attend because of work. Instead, Sunday is traditionally consecrated by necessary. After all, they can pray at home just as well. This Christian piety to good works and humble service of the sick, has clearly been an issue in the Church for more than a the infirm, and the elderly. Christians will also sanctify millennium.
