A note to father frank - Cathedral of Christ the King
October 28, 2012
thirtieth Sunday in ordinary time
Feast of All Souls
The Feast of All Souls is in November, a month traditionally dedicated to
remembering our ancestors and loved ones that have died. The Cathedral of
Christ the King, celebrating its 75th anniversary as a parish, will offer its
moving remembrance of all those who have preceded us in a very special All
Souls liturgy.
On Friday, November 2 at 7:30 pm, an All Souls Day Eucharist will be
celebrated featuring music from Maurice Durufle’s Requiem. The Solemn Mass
will be celebrated by Cathedral Rector Frank McNamee, with special musical
support by The Cathedral Choir of Christ the King. The Choir will be joined
by cellist Charae Kruger and the work’s dazzling organ accompaniment will be
played by Cathedral Organist Timothy Wissler.

Thank you for your generosity in supplying the items needed
for the Evening for Hope Mass celebrated by Archbishop
Gregory. The Gala was wonderful and the most successful
event to date. The evening was filled with the love and
excitement of those committed to realizing our great potential
and celebrating Hope in Action. The Cathedral’s support is greatly appreciated
and added to the beauty and inspiration of the Mass.
We are also delighted to report the Gala sponsorships surpasses the original
goal and reached $215,000. These funds directly impact the development and
growth of the programs St. Vincent de Paul delivers to those in need.

Stewardship of Treasure
How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
In today’s Gospel, St. Mark retells the story of Jesus’ healing of the blind man
Bartimaeus. After his healing, he chooses to be Christ’s disciple by following Him
on the way to Jerusalem—to the Lord’s passion and death. The prophet Isaiah also
describes the journey to deliverance through the Lord. The Letter to the Hebrews
describes God’s call among men to the priesthood. In our quest for discipleship, do
we have the faith and courage to answer God’s call to our own life’s vocation?
Stewardship of Treasure
This weekend is Stewardship of Treasure Weekend. It is a time to make a
commitment to support the operational needs of Christ the King parish for the year
2013. Pledge envelopes are available at the entrances to the Cathedral or at the
front desk. Please return your completed pledge envelope as soon as possible. It
will take the financial efforts of each of us to continue the mission of Christ the
King parish – “To Know, Love and Serve as Jesus Did”.
If you have any questions, please contact the Cathedral at 404-233-2145.

CKS Rex Classic - November 13
This year, the CKS Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday,
November 13, at the fabulous River Club in Suwanee. Home to
this year's Sectional for the U.S. Open, The River Club offers
world-class golf in a serene, forested setting. This year's format is
a "Shamble" in which the team plays from the best drive; each
player plays his own ball from there. The two low net scores per hole are added
for a team total. Single player registration is $220 and includes golf, lunch, drink
tickets, and post-play cocktail reception. Sponsorship opportunities are filling fast
but are still available. See the CKS website at christking.org for details and to
register. Registration ends November 8.
CHRIST THE KING
SCHOOL
2012 OPEN HOUSE
As the Cathedral of Christ the King celebrates its 75th anniversary, Christ the King
School stands today much as it ever was – a community uniting school, family and
faith. If you would like to learn more about Christ the King School, please join us
for our annual Open House on Sunday, November 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Kenny
Hall. This event will provide interested families with the opportunity to visit
classrooms and meet with teachers, students and parents. The Principal’s
presentation will begin at 2 pm. Student and parent led tours will begin after the
presentation. Mrs. Cecilia Edwards, Admissions Director, will be available after
the presentation to answer questions.
Owen Stokes Benefit
Join us for Rock for Owen, a tribute to Owen Stokes featuring local
bands Second Verse and My Favorite Baldwin. All are welcome…
kids, too! Saturday, November 3 from 6 - 10 pm at East Andrews
Café & Bar.
Owen passed away five years ago, just two months before he was to begin
Kindergarten at Christ the King School. In order to help keep Owen’s angelic
memory alive, the Stokes family established a scholarship in his name at CKS. Like
Owen, the recipient must be a Kindergarten boy who demonstrates a passion for
reading, sports and arts-and-crafts. The recipient must also be kind, wellmannered, good at sharing and always ready to do the right thing. All proceeds
from this event will fund the Owen Stokes Scholarship Fund and the Make-AWish Foundation. A $10 donation is requested at the door. Silent Auction
includes a one-of-a-kind First Communion dress valued at $450. Dinner will be
served as well. Contact Laura Stokes at [email protected].

FOCUS ON THE CATECHISM: The Desire for God
On October 11, 2012, the opening day of the Year of Faith, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of
the Catechism of the Catholic Church. What a gift and blessing to have the Catechism to turn to for
edification and encouragement in our faith journey. In Part One: The Profession of Faith and
Chapter One: Man’s Capacity for God, we read the following paragraphs:
27 The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God;
and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he
never stops searching for:
The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he is called to communion with God. This
invitation to converse with God is addressed to man as soon as he comes into being. For if man
exists it is because God has created him through love, and through love continues to hold him in existence. He cannot live
fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and entrusts himself to his creator. (Gaudium et spes)
30 "Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice." Although man can forget God or reject him, He never ceases to
call every man to seek him, so as to find life and happiness. But this search for God demands of man every effort of
intellect, a sound will, "an upright heart", as well as the witness of others who teach him to seek God.
You are great, O Lord, and greatly to be praised: great is your power and your wisdom is without measure. And man, so
small a part of your creation, wants to praise you: this man, though clothed with mortality and bearing the evidence of sin
and the proof that you withstand the proud. Despite everything, man, though but a small a part of your creation, wants to
praise you. You yourself encourage him to delight in your praise, for you have made us for yourself, and our heart is
restless until it rests in you. (St. Augustine, Confessions)

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Feast of all souls
continued
This annual mass is celebrated with all the mystery and reverence befitting the
occasion and is particularly devoted to all those who have passed away in the
last year. Father McNamee notes that “for me, one of the most moving symbols
used in the Mass, is the Cathedral’s Death Registry, which contains the names
of all who have been buried from Christ the King since the Cathedral’s
dedication. And this year, as the Cathedral parish celebrates its’ 75th
anniversary, it is fitting that this book, with its significant history and
memories, takes a central place in the liturgy.”
The prayers and music for this special liturgy are filled with images of eternal
rest and perpetual light, and ask more of us than mere reflection on past
losses. They encourage us to bring to the present those we have loved and
known; to acknowledge their continuing presence in our lives; to pray for
them not in the past tense, but in the present and future tenses. The entire
diocesan family is encouraged to attend this profound and deeply moving
liturgy.
