June 5, 2016 Tenth Sunday of ordinary time Ordinary Time Isn’t So Ordinary Sunday, February 7 was the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time and it was the last time we saw our priests wearing green vestments. After celebrating the seasons of Lent, Triduum and Easter as well as the Solemnities of Pentecost, Holy Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi, we are back to Ordinary Time. But Ordinary Time is far from “ordinary.” It gets its title from the word ‘ordinal’. Ordinal means ‘numbered’, and ‘ordinary time’ simply means that it is ‘numbered time’. Hence the Sundays are numbered Fifth, Sixth, Twentieth, etc. Ordinary Time is more than a change of vestment color. It is a relatively quiet time when we celebrate the life and live out the teachings of Christ. If you follow the Sunday and daily Mass readings through the 34 weeks of Ordinary Time, you encounter the ups and downs, the challenges and joys of being a disciple of Christ. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org This Ordinary Time, consider reading the daily Mass readings, follow Christ more closely and make this year’s Ordinary Time “extraordinary.” WHAT’S INSIDE: Summer Offerings Page 2 PSR Registration Info Page 3 Youth 365 Page 4 Summer Retreat Opportunities Page 6 Financial Peace University Page 7 Fr. Pope Francis hopes that the international community does not look on “silent and inactive” in the face of the “unacceptable crime” of the persecution of Christians around the world. In March, the US House unanimously passed a bipartisan bill (HR75) in a vote of 393-0 calling the ongoing atrocities in the Middle East as genocide against Christians. Since this bill passed little has been done by our government to help Christian refugees or supply them aid. Help show your support for our brothers and sisters by advocating on their behalf to Congress. We are planning a short letter-writing workshop to teach individuals effective letter format and content for writing their congressmen about political issues and then allowing time to draft their own letter to support persecuted Christians. For questions please contact Jonathan Brouse at 740.502.5879 or [email protected]. 8 Written & Presented by Keri Allen Thursdays, June 2 – June 30 9:30-11:30 Holy Spirit Church, St. Mary’s Chapel, 4465 Northside Drive. Jose Kochuparampil Ads are ubiquitous and no one can escape from them. Wherever we go whatever we do they are always there. All these ads are out there to entice us to use their products thus becoming their customers. These ads, as you would know well, are alluring and persuasive. There are over two billion Christians in the world and of which some 1.2 billion are Catholics. Humanly thinking there isn’t anything attractive or alluring in the ads that Jesus puts out. In the Gospel according to Mark (the oldest of the four gospels) we read Jesus’ words: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the Gospel will save it” (8:34-35). Elsewhere in the New Testament also we have several instances where the followers of Jesus are clearly reminded of the earthly consequences of being a Christian. On April 2, 2014 there appeared a story on the Catholic News Agency website titled: “Priest who survived labor camp recalls suffering as gift,” narrating Monsignor Matthew Koo’s three decade long imprisonment in China all because he is a devotee of the Blessed Mother. According to the story Msgr. Koo was arrested and detained in a Chinese labor camp for thirty years due to his Marian devotion. Hailing from Shanghai, China in 1953 Koo entered seminary. And two years later he was arrested for being an active member of the Legion of Mary movement. And Koo was sentenced to serve five years in a labor camp. “Often referred to as “re-education camps,” the labor camps are a system of administrative detentions in the People’s Republic of China which are generally used to detain for minor crimes, with punishments being administered through the police rather than the judicial system,” states the story. Anyone deemed as anti-socialist or counter-revolutionary is sentenced to such punishment in that country. It was in 1955 on the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin that Koo was arrested. “My crime was the Legion of Mary. I joined the Legion of Mary when I was in high school. So this was my first crime and they arrested me, “said Msgr. Koo. His first sentencing (without a judge and without a lawyer) was for five years. The Cathedral Flower Guild is seeking sponsors for the weekly altar flowers. Both the sponsor’s name and the name of the person being honored will be printed in the Sunday bulletin on the weekend the flowers appear on the altar. The cost of sponsorship is $150 for the main altar; $100 for each side altar; and $60 for the Parish Hall. The Flower Guild will select the arrangements; and the colors will be compatible with the Cathedral colors and feast days. The Cathedral arrangements will remain on the altars for the following week. If you are interested in learning more about the program please contact Cathy Thurmond, [email protected] or 404-352-3513. When the new president came into power thinking that he would be getting justice Koo went to court. This time, instead of receiving justice, to his surprise, he was accused of being a counter revolutionary and that he denied the Legion of Mary a counter revolutionary organization. And he was awarded another three years in the labor camp. Heavy manual labor and other strenuous physical tasks were the daily routine. At the end of the day this faithful son of Mary would pray the rosary with another seminarian who was also there in the camp. Upon finding a scribbling on a piece of paper left by the other seminarian asking Koo to pray for the Pope and never to compromise the faith, an additional seven more years were given to him in the labor camp. 9 CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING CATEDRAL DE CRISTO REY 2699 Peachtree Road NE Atlanta, GA 30305 MISIÓN CATÓLICA DE CRISTO REY 3349 Buford Highway, Suite 17A1 Brookhaven, GA 30329 (a la mano derecha de Briarwood Rd) MINISTERIO HISPANO Padre Feiser MuñozTeléfono 404-267-3696 Horario Lunes a Viernes : 9:00 AM 5:00 PM CELEBRACIÓN EUCARÍSTICA Capilla Martes Kenny Hall Sábado Catedral Domingo Misión Domingo EN ESPAÑOL 7:00 PM 5:00 PM 1:30 PM 9:30 AM CONFESIONES Lunes y Miércoles 7:15 - 7:45 AM 6:00 - 6:30 PM Sábados 8:30 - 9 AM / 3 - 4:00 PM Misión Domingos 9:00 - 9:30 AM Otros días, previa cita únicamente.
