MUST Summer Lunch Program
A Garden of Emotions

On one of my stops carrying lunches to the
children in our community, there is a tall, old tree.
It grows in a space that I think of as a garden. A
garden filled with rusty, broken cans, decaying
dwellings. A garden that makes me thankful for the
beauty of small blossoms of flowers blooming in
clay pots placed on broken steps. A garden that
also holds the blossoms of emotions and feelings. A place for children to express joy
as they receive from MUST the gifts of food prepared by a compassionate community
of volunteers. The tree is a place for their parents to sit in the shade of the branches as
they reflect over their past and hope for the future of their children. It is a garden that
demands no certain language as words mingle easily.
Under its old limbs polished by the summer winds, the children share their lives.
A little boy looks quickly into his lunch sack and exclaims: “Wow, a juice box; I will
drink half now and save the rest to share with my father when he comes home from
work.” A mother, who must walk three blocks to use a pay phone to hear from her
dying mother, responds with tears in her eyes: “These lunches let us know that
somebody cares about our children.” A teenage girl who keeps four small children
while their parents are at work whispers to me,
“Thank you for listening and for asking every day
how I am,” as one by one by one the children slip
dandelions into my hands. A six-year old little girl
says: “I shared my lunch with my best friend who
broke her foot; we halved everything in the sack
and that lunch tasted better than any lunch I’ve
had all summer.” In humility under the tree, I sat
with two battered women to inquire about their
needs. As I got up to leave, one of the women reached for my hand and said, “when
you come, you always bring respect and the books; oh please, keep bringing the
books.” Long after the sandwiches are gone the books continue to feed the children. I
watched as young boys after receiving their lunches ran to help an elderly man throw
his heavy bag of trash into a dumpster just outside his bedroom window. Every day I
see seeds of compassion. A young boy on his bike came
one day to ask me if I could help him carry four milk jugs
of water to a family whose water had been turned off.
I have wondered if the tree was planted intentionally by
loving hands or if it came to birth long ago by the careless
dropping of a bird hurrying to its nest to feed its young.
Now, under this old tree, young children are fed. In the
early morning, a healing silence is broken by the
squeals of children running to receive a sack filled with
love. And near its roots, a child sits reading a book
allowing seeds of hope to take root as the old tree lifts
its tall branches heavenward in search of the sun.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta has launched a
new Safe Environment Volunteer
Training program. It is the hope of
Archbishop Gregory to continue to give clergy, staff and volunteers the tools
needed to build a loving and safe place for all God’s Children to grow in faith. All
NEW volunteers working with children and vulnerable individuals are required
to complete an in-person course “Protecting God’s Children” prior to
volunteering. Our Cathedral offerings will take place in Kenny Hall on
Wednesday, July 27th 9am-12pm, and Thursday, July 28th 6pm-9pm. Visit
the Safe Environment website at www.archatl.com to register for the class. Any
volunteers needing rescreening (last background check completed 5 or more
years ago) are also required to complete this training. Only adults 18 and older
are to attend and must arrive ON TIME to receive credit for the training.

PSR Registration
PSR classes resume on Sunday, September 11, 2016. If you have not yet registered for the upcoming school year, search “PSR registration” on the Cathedral
website and enroll now. Classes meet at 9:00 and 10:20 am on Sunday mornings,
serving students between 3 years old and the 8th grade.

Catechists are needed: Our Parish School of Religion (PSR) program
is in need of Adults to serve as teachers for the upcoming school year.
Classes meet on average for one hour each of 26 Sunday mornings
between September 11, 2016 and May 21, 2017. Our enrollment
“harvest” is strong, and we need more laborers. If you have a love of
your Catholic faith and children, and are willing to share that with our

The Cathedral Flower Guild is

Stewardship Reflection on Today’s Readings
There is no question that prayer is at the heart of this week’s readings. We
understand that prayer is foundational to our faith and the practice of it. Jesus,
though the Son of God and One with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is
referenced as praying consistently. How many times do passages in Holy
Scripture open with a statement like that in today’s Gospel from St. Luke: “Jesus
was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples
said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples’.”
Prayer is what we consider to be one of the Four Pillars of Stewardship (along
with hospitality, formation, and service). We may find it puzzling that Jesus
prayed so often. First and foremost, He was setting an example for His followers
and for us. Jesus’ human nature (He calls Himself often the Son of Man to
remind all that He was human as well as God.) certainly sought solace and
comfort from His Father God.
In our First Reading from the Book of Genesis it is pointed out that Abraham
came nearer to the Lord. One of the best ways for us to be with and to be near
God is through prayer. Abraham understood that. As is the case in this reading
about Sodom and Gomorrah, prayer is a two way street. We pray to God, but we must learn to listen to Him in return.
Abraham’s prayer is answered in effect when the Lord replies that if He were to find even a small number of holy prayerful
people in the cities He would not destroy them. Prayer indicates that we know Who God is. Prayer, however, is not passive,
but it encourages us to be active. The famous quote from St. Augustine indicates the active nature of prayer. He said, “Pray as
though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.”
St. Paul was aware that the Colossians were hearing many opinions as to what it meant to be a Christian and a follower of
Christ. His letter to the Colossians, from where our Second Reading is drawn, addresses those issues. Paul emphasizes our
oneness with the Lord and how we must strive for that. That is achieved in large part through prayer. It is through prayer
that we come to the full realization of what the Lord has done for us. As Paul writes, “You were buried with him in baptism,
in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God.”
Think of how often Jesus’ apostles and followers witnessed Him praying. There was most likely something about watching
Him pray that made them want to learn to pray in the same way, a magnetism that was unique. Thus the appeal, “Lord, teach
us to pray.” We need Jesus to teach us to pray as well. It is a fascinating aspect of prayer that even a young child can pray, but
also the holiest people we may know or experience are still working at mastering prayer.
At no point in Scripture did the Lord say specifically “This is how you preach,” although He provided many examples of that.
In Today’s Gospel, however, He says, in effect, “This is how you pray.” The key to that statement is that talking to others is
important, but talking to God is the ultimate. Today’s Gospel includes what we call the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, a
prayer that we may say more often as individuals and as a community than any other.
The beauty of the Our Father is its simplicity and its succinctness. Prayer does not have to be complex or lengthy, but it does
need to be direct and heartfelt. The Our Father is a powerful prayer put in simple terms. It is through prayer that we truly
experience God. It is through prayer that we develop our close relationship with God. St. Charles Borromeo said, “We must
pray before, during, and after everything we do. The prophet says, ‘I will pray, and then I will understand.’ This is the way
we can easily overcome the countless difficulties we face day after day, which, after all, are part of our work. In prayer we
find strength to bring Christ to birth in ourselves and in others.

Jardín de emociones- Carol Hunt
En una de mis paradas llevando almuerzos
a los niños de nuestra comunidad, había un
árbol muy alto, y viejo. El árbol creció en
un espacio que a mi me parece ser un jardín. Un jardín lleno de latas oxidadas y rotas. Un jardín que me hizo sentir agradecida por las pequeñas flores que florecían en las masetas de barros en las escaleras rotas. Un jardín que también florece emociones y sentimientos. Un lugar en
donde los niños expresan su alegría al recibir de MUST los almuerzos preparados
por voluntarios compasivos de nuestra comunidad. El árbol es un lugar donde
sus padres se sientan a la sombra de sus ramas a reflexionar sobre el pasado y la
esperanza del el futuro de sus niños. Es un jardín que no exige ciertos idiomas
como palabras para comunicarse. Bajo sus ramas viejas pulidas por los vientos de
verano, donde los niños comparten sus vidas. Un niño miro rápidamente en su
bolsa de almuerzo y exclamo; Wow, una cajita de jugo; voy a beber la mitad ahora y la otra mitad la voy a guardar para mi papá cuando regrese del trabajo.” Una
madre, quien debe caminar tres cuadras para usar un teléfono pre pagado para
poder escuchar a su madre quien esta muriendo, respondió con lagrimas en sus
ojos: “ Estos almuerzos demuestran que hay alguien a los que les importan nuestros niños.” Una joven quien cuida 4 niños pequeños mientras los padres trabajan, me dijo en vos baja, “Gracias por escucharme y preguntarme todos los días
como estoy”, uno por uno de los niños pusieron una flor en mis manos. Una niña de seis años me dijo: “yo compartí mi almuerzo con mi mejor amiga que se
quebró el pie; Nosotras dividimos el almuerzos a la mitad y ese almuerzo ha sido
el mejor almuerzo que pude haber comido este verano. “ Con humildad me senté
con dos mujeres muy maltratadas a hablar sobre sus necesidades debajo del árbol.
Cuando me estaba levantando para salir, una mujer tomo mi mano y me dijo, “
cuando vienes, siempre llegas con respeto y con libros; oh por favor, siga trayendo libros.” Después de haber consumido los sándwiches estos libros continúan
alimentando a los niños. Yo vi como los niño después de recibir almuerzo, corren
a ayudar a un anciano a desechar una bolsa pesada de basura. A diario veo las
semillas de compasión. Un muchacho en su bicicleta me pregunto que si podría
ayudarle a cargar cuatro galones de leche llenos de agua para una familia que les
habían desconectado el servicio. Me he preguntado si el árbol fue plantado intencionalmente por manos amorosas o si nació hace mucho tiempo atrás por algún
pájaro descuidado que dejo caer semillas mientras apresuradamente alimentaba a
su cría. Ahora bajo este árbol viejo muchos niños son alimentados. Temprano en
la mañana, el silencio curador queda roto con los gritos de los niños corriendo a
recibir las bolsas llenas de amor, Y cerca de sus raíces, un niño leyendo un libro
permiten que las semillas de la esperanza tome las raíces de este árbol viejo para
que sus ramas se eleven hacia el cielo en busca del sol.

La Misión de Cristo Rey está buscando
padrinos para las flores del altar. El
nombre de los padrinos y la persona
honorada con las flores del altar saldrán
en el boletín el fin de semana que las
adornen el altar. El costo para apadrinar
el altar completo es de $150; $100 por
los nichos de los lados adonde están
ubicados La Virgen Maria y San Jose; y
$60 por el Ambon. El Ministerio de las
Flores escogerán los arreglos de acuerdo
a los colores litúrgicos o la temporada

Dear Friends in Christ,
Welcome! On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy,
the staff, and the whole Cathedral community, I welcome you to
the Cathedral of Christ the King. I pray that as you step into the
Cathedral, you not only experience the beauty of the
surroundings but also the vibrant spirit of the community
gathered.
We are an active parish of close to 6,000 families and over one
hundred ministries. Our mission statement to “Know, Love and
Serve as Jesus Did” is fulfilled by the sharing our gifts of time,
talent and treasure. If you are new, it is my hope that you will
join us and become part of this wonderful community. If you are
just visiting, it is a blessing to have you here and thank you for
worshiping with us. We hope you will come again.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Parish families who wish to have a child baptized should be
registered in the parish for 3 months and take the
pre-baptismal class BEFORE the birth of their child. Classes
are offered monthly. Please contact Elaine McCollum at
404-267-3692 to register for the class. All scheduling
information is given at the class. (Note: Baptisms are scheduled
after the class is completed.)

THE SACRAMENT OF FIRST EUCHARIST
Preparation is a two-year process. Enrollment in Catholic
school or Parish School of Religion is required the year prior
to receiving the Sacrament.
THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
A minimum of six months preparation is required. Call the
Parish office, 404-233-2145 x673 for information and to register
for the preparation process.
THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
Monday and Wednesday, 7:15-7:45 am and 6-6:30 pm.
Saturday, 8:30-9 am and 3-4 pm, in the Cathedral.
SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Please inform Pastoral Care Ministries of anyone homebound, shutin or hospitalized so that they may receive the Sacraments.
